Hello, Good Evening! Starting today with a quick and pretty easy challenge. You just need to watch the video and identify who is playing sax with the great Luiz Bonfa.
Hope uEnjoy!
.
Não me parece o Stan Getz …

I’m paralyzed by this record and if you want to be surprised as I was, please don’t read for this point and come back later after hearing. In spite of being widely recognized a Samba composer and interpreter, Paulinho da Viola has a strong connection with instrumental music since he was born. Paulinho da Viola is the son of Cesar Faria, acclaimed guitar player, member of Epoca de Ouro — Jacob do Bandolim group – for decades.
Memorias Chorando is an instrumental only album, an excellent Choro LP, perhaps Paulinho da Viola tribute to his father Cesar Faria (playing violao in all tracks) and to his musician background, mostly based on choro.
This is Paulinho da Viola – Memorias Chorando (1976), for Odeon, featuring Paulinho da Viola top-notch cavaquinho playing on renditions to classic choros and compositions by his own. Paulinho da Viola is very well accompanied in the set that features Cesar Faria, Copinha, Cristovao Bastos, Elton Medeiros and many others, see personnel listing for details. I’m sending with the music the always-fantastic work of Elifas Andreato, which is the same available at the panorama bellow in high resolution. Tracks include:

This is art. Antonio Carlos Jobim, Borzeguim and the Brazilian cartoonist Still. This combination results in a magical video to close an Antonio Carlos Jobim documentary by a Brazilian TV channel, 1987. We have 2 minutes and 40 seconds of video with Antonio Carlos Jobim and the work of Still. Do not forget to make use of the increase lens.
Hope uEnjoy

Consegui o vídeo graças ao bOssas nOvas. Agora ele está corrigido.
Luiz Harding sent us another awesome Zimbo Trio music video, Thanks Luiz! Once again, Zimbo Trio delivers top-notch music. Take a look how they have fun playing together. Amilton Godoy is a really gifted musician; anyway, let’s watch another fantastic Zimbo Trio performance, now at the legendary Jazz Brasil TV show.
Hope uEnjoy!

Graças ao bOssas nOvas conseguimos o vídeo acima. Outro vídeo interessante segue abaixo: Zimbo Trio toca Loro, de Egberto Gismonti.
Luiz Harding sent to us what I consider the first Os Cariocas solo video at Loronix. It is delicious to hear their performances, but it is really better to watch them singing. I don’t have idea when this clip was recorded, but it is really beautiful. It was nice to see when they move the microphone away to change volumes of the vocalizations, really amazing. This is Os Cariocas – Ela e Carioca.
I said before we had no Victor Assis Brasil videos at Loronix. I’m glad to share the first one, sent by Pedro Mendes Djembe, a great video collector that has an awesome page at YouTube with more than 150 videos of Brazilian Music and Jazz. Pedro’s page is here, you will spend hours there. I recommend.
The video is just bellow, but this post is all about Victor Assis Brasil second LP and the galaxy of Brazilian musicians at the set.
This is Victor Assis Brasil – Trajeto (1968), for Equipe. This is the album I was saving for this occasion. I read today that Victor Assis Brasil won the 1969 Montreux Festival edition, accompanied by Dom Salvador, Helio Delmiro, Edson Lobo and Edison Machado, being also the best sax player of this edition. I’m wondering if there are tapes or videos available with Victor performance at Montreux. It will be a real treat to hear or watch this material. Tracks include:

Just a nice video powered by Luiz Harding showing Joao Donato performing A Paz (Joao Donato / Gilberto Gil). I’ll be back in 30 minutes or so while helping our trained crew of engineers on making everything ready for today and tomorrow, the start of Music from All Countries celebration.

The story behind this singer is sometimes hard to believe. Leny Eversong was a renowned singer in the 50′s, she made a solid career in the US and Europe as the main attraction during several seasons in Las Vegas Cassinos and recorded albums outside of Brazil, including a LP in France with Pierre Dorsey Orchestra. Her career collapsed in the early 70 and is getting a new breath with the Internet with albums sold by more than a hundred dollars on auction sites. This one seems to be one of the hardest to find. If you get pleased with it, thanks to zecalouro’s mother, it was very wise of her to find it on a weekend trip to Minas Gerais.
This is Leny Eversong – Leny em Foco! (1957), for Copacabana. This was probably recorded before her US period; the back cover brings some photos with nightclubs with her name as the main attraction. Leny Eversong has passed in 1984 after a long fight against health and personal problems since her husband left home to buy cigarettes and never came back in the early 70′s. Tracks include:
01 – My Yiddishe Momme (J. Yellen / L. Pollak)
02 – Porque Vivemos Assim (Capiba)
03 – Smile (Charles Chaplin / J. Turner / G. Parsons)
04 – Nunca (Lupicínio Rodrigues)
05 – Granada (Agustin Lara)
06 – Águas de Saquarema (Juca Chaves)
07 – Regeneração (César Siqueira)
08 – Meu Quarto Vazio (Meira Guimarães / Vicente Paiva)
09 – Amei Bastante (Vera Brasil / Sivan Castelo Neto)
10 – E Nada Mais (César Siqueira / Maria Rita)
11 – Insulto (Mário Lago / Chocolate)
.
What else can we say more about Baden Powell, the great master of Brazilian guitar? Everything was said, shown and heard here at Loronix. Baden Powell legacy is fantastic, he recorded several albums, really above the average. Baden Powell appearances on film is also widely available at the Internet, VHS tapes of fans and even documentary made in Brazil, Germany, France, among other countries.
Additionally, Baden Powell is has the best musician website I have ever seen so far, Brazil-on-Guitar.de, which is an honor to have it listed at Loronix a friend website. Don’t miss Brazil-on-Guitar, which I ask for help on reviewing another fantastic Baden Powell album.
This is Baden Powell – Baden / O Som de Baden Powell (1968), for Elenco as ME-48. Brazil-on-Guitar says: Baden is an outtake album from the Tristeza on Guitar sessions in July 1966. They are alternative takes with slight variations e.g. in Das Rosas or Round Midnight and unused songs like Canto de Ossanha or Lamento, one title was named differently. They have a very different sound. The SABA recording sound have a stronger bass sound, probably according to the musical taste of producer Joachim E. Berendt. The sound of the Brazilian Elenco pressing sounds more intimate and personal, without the strong bass sound on all instruments.
Thus it is not a simple re-pressing of the famous SABA record, but shows a certain independence, reaching uniqueness. This is emphasised by using rare pictures, Baden Powell ether with Herbie Mann, who did not take part in the recording session, and a less typical PR picture showing Baden doing a chord spanning six frets.
Baden is a well-done outtake album, unfortunately the only in his discography. BOG recommends listening to both recordings, if possible the Japanese CD version of Tristeza on Guitar and the Baden-reissue from 2003 (whose tracklist is wrong, Sarava instead if Samba de Bencao, furthermore there is a graphical mistake in the front cover).
Mr. E. is always amazing us, thanks for this one Mr. E., one of the coolest challenges ever at Loronix and the first in a new category, the audio challenge. There are two Antonio Carlos Jobim songs on each video bellow, Eu Nao Existo sem Voce and Eu Sei que Eu Vou te Amar performed by two mysterious singers as they were a caipira or sertanejo duo.
The challenge is to identify the duo, who is singing Antonio Carlos Jobim on this funny way? I blend the music with Macaw videos just to entertain you while identifying the mysterious duo. Thanks once again Mr. E. this should be really amazing.
For Loronix friends outside of Brazil, they are singing Musica Caipira or Musica Sertaneja, which is a term from Brazilian country music.
Hope uEnjoy!

Seguem abaixo:
Let’s start a new series of Luiz Harding video contributions showing an artist never seen at Loronix on video, Johnny Alf, performing live one of his greatest tunes, Eu e A Brisa.
Hope uEnjoy!

Caetano never stops to amaze Loronixers, now he goes on a sought after collectors item, Taiguara debut LP for Philips, 1965. Everybody knows that zecalouro is a newbie to Taiguara music and Caetano is providing us a great start with this album. Reviewers say this record is one of the best Taiguara albums. Thanks Caetano for providing this unique opportunity.
This is Taiguara – Taiguara (1965), for Philips, celebrated with comments of Luiz Eca, Edu Lobo and Alaide Costa throughout the artwork. Luiz Chavez, Zimbo Trio bassist, is in charge of arrangements and conduction. I did not have the chance to check how Taiguara music evolved in the forthcoming years until his passing in 1996 and I’m sure if he kept the pace, youth and swing he delivers at this debut, later releases would be all great. I’m making available a video sent by a Loronix friend with Taiguara performing Cavaleiro da Esperanca at Projeto Seis e Meia at Teatro Joao Caetano. Tracks include:
01 – Samba de Copo na Mão (Taiguara)
02 – Preciso Aprender a Ser Só (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
03 – Mulata É Pra Sambar (Taiguara)
04 – Graúna (Glaciliano Correia da Silva / Taiguara)

Nothing can stop Mr. E. this week. After making Copacabna Palace, the tireless Mr. E. makes his debut on Video Challenges and urges Loronixers to watch the video and answer a few questions, as follows:
1) Who is this actress?
2) She is not singing, which singer is giving voice to this actress?
3) This clip was taken from a movie, what is the name of this movie?
Hope uEnjoy!
.
Hello, Good Evening! Sometimes we need to be straightforward, this is the time. Mr. E., the mighty Mr. E. that sent to us Mary Goncalvez, Zeze Gonzaga among several other truly amazing contributions, sent this pearl. I would like to title this post as “All About Copacabana Palace Film”, Mr. E. made a real strike, sending Copacabana Palace OST and 2 excerpts of that movie with Brazilian artists performing Bossa Nova songs. Thanks a million Mr. E. I’m sure this post will please everybody.
This is Copacabana Palace – Band Originale du Film (1962), for Festival, featuring Joao Gilberto, Os Cariocas, Norma Bengell, Miguel and Orquestra Gianni Ferrio. Self-explanatory album, the OST of Copacabana Palace movie. Mr. E. also made available some additional jewels, three songs extracted by the original film soundtrack and four other relevant songs that Mr. E. has gently picked up from other albums.
The tireless Mr. E. also makes available two excerpts of that movie, Joao Gilberto, Luiz Bonfa and Antonio Carlos Jobim performing Cancao do Mar together at the beach. We know this video is available at Loronix already, however, Mr. E. version has a much better quality and it is complete. I did not know that the previous one had some parts missing.
To end this magnificent contribution, Mr. E. pleases us with a music video featuring Os Cariocas and Joao Gilberto performing So Danco Samba. Wow! Thanks Mr. E. everybody will always remember your effort. Tracks include:
Original Sound Track
01 – So Danco Samba (Antonio Carlos Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes) with JOAO GILBERTO AND OS CARIOCAS

Well. What can I add to what is shown on this cover picture? Not much. This is simply Zimbo Trio debut LP for RGE, one of the most fascinating instrumental trios from Brazil. Actually, I have something to say, Caetano strongly recommends Garota de Ipanema as the instrumental rendition that he likes most. I would like to please Loronixers with Garota de Ipanema by Zimbo Trio on a video (with official images of Rio de Janeiro from Prefeitura-RJ), produced by zecalouro. I’m sure that you will jump on it before watching the video with Zimbo Trio on background.
This is Zimbo Trio – Zimbo Trio (1964), for RGE, featuring Hamilton Godoy (piano), Luis Chaves (bass) and Rubens Barsotti (drums). Tracks include:
01 – Zimbo Samba (Adilson Godoy)
02 – Menina Flor (Luis Bonfá / Maria Helena Toledo)
03 – Garota de Ipanema (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
04 – Inútil Paisagem (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
05 – Barquinho Diferente (Sergio Augusto)

07 – Consolação (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
08 – Diz Que Fui Por Aí (Zé Keti / Hortêncio Rocha)
09 – Sou Sem Paz (Adilson Godoy)
10 – Vivo Sonhando (Tom Jobim)
11 – Só Por Amor (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
12 – O Norte (Luis Chaves)

Caetano sent this LP to us and now I cannot skip a day without listening to it with zecalouro. They are nice guys. I felt very sad when I read the collapsed early, in 1964. Anyway, some of their albums are available and this one is a great Caetano’s pick with the boys making a deep dive into the Bossa Nova hype.
This is The Hi-Lo’s – The Hi-Lo’s Happen to Bossa Nova (1963), for Reprise. Funny and really competent musicians making unique vocalizations on top of Bossa Nova. By the way, Laurindo Almeida is in charge of linear notes and says that all arrangements are from Clare Fischer. I don’t know who made the English lyrics to Brazilian tunes, but the one in charge did a great job. I’m asking for AMG help on The Hi-Lo’s bio. Caetano, this is a fantastic album, thanks for this nice pick. Tracks include:
AMG Bio:
The Hi-Lo’s were one of the more creative and influential male vocal quartets of the 1950s, matching intricate harmonies with standards that were given big band-pop arrangements. Forming in Los Angeles in the early 1950s, they began recording in 1953, just in time for the LP era — an important consideration since The Hi-Lo’s did not have huge success in the singles market. They were all over television in the 1950s, appearing on 39 episodes of The Rosemary Clooney Show alone, as well as the shows of Steve Allen, Nat “King” Cole, Pat Boone and others. In the studio, they worked with talented arrangers like Frank Comstock and Marty Paich, and hit their commercial peak with three Top 20 albums on Columbia in 1957 (one recorded with Clooney). Their inventive shadings and the wide range (particularly in the upper register) were, as is well-known, influences on Brian Wilson, and also, as is much less well-known, John Phillips. Wilson and Phillips would apply some of that harmonic influence to recordings with their groups, The Beach Boys and The Mamas And The Papas. Recent jazz-pop groups such as The Manhattan Transfer also have a significant debt to The Hi-Lo’s.

Last Minute Video: The Hi-Lo’s with The Benny Goodman Orchestra.

Hello! Good Evening! I was decided to describe how was the great day I had but I decided to be a little bit straightforward. However, I need to tell the day was great. Period. Great enough to decide on addressing this long time request by Loronixers, the debut LP of Emilio Santiago, considered one of the best Brazilian voices on the current scene. I will take also advantage to present a video and also answer an old challenge. Let’s see.
This is Emilio Santiago – Emilio Santiago (1975), for CID. I was astonished when I check the release date of Emilio Santiago first LP. Emilio took 10 years to release his fist album before he made the appearance on that early challenge at the gas station. I’m making that video available again in case you miss it. This is a very hard review, since it is a very different album from what we are used to expect from Emilio Santiago, a romantic singer with a commercial repertoire. This debut has wonderful Samba Soul renditions performed with soul. I will let the comments section for the specialist, Trix, Mr. G., Mr. B, Now, Donatinho and many others 70′s authorities. I’m making also a video by Luiz Harding showing Emilio Santiago and Cesar Camargo Mariano performing together. Tracks include:
01 – Bananeira (Gilberto Gil / João Donato)
02 – Quero Alegria (Nelson Cavaquinho / Guilherme de Brito)
03 – Porque Somos Iguais (Durval Ferreira / Pedro Camargo)
04 – Batendo a Porta (João Nogueira / Paulo César Pinheiro)
05 – Depois (Ivan Lins / Otávio Daher)
06 – Brother (Jorge Ben “Jorge Benjor”)
07 – La Mulata (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
08 – Nega Dina (Zé Keti)
09 – Doa a Quem Doer (Ivan Lins)
10 – Sessão das Dez (Tita / Édison Lobo / Renato Rocha)
.
Here is a nice little record sent by Caetano Rodrigues. I said little by the duration, 10 songs and less than 30 minutes, but the music is great, performed by an instrumental group never released before at Loronix. If you are in the mood to hear Hammond B3 organ, blended with a brass section of sax, trombone, piston and clarinet, this is the record for you.
This is Os Biriba Boys – Biribalanco (1965), for Musidisc. Actually, there are some tracks with vocals performed by a crooner, but Biribalanco is essentially an instrumental album. The cover alone worth the admission price and I could not resist to show at post closing a panorama photo of Rio de Janeiro, sent by my friend c.a.t. from O Globo. Please tell me if you think this panorama image damage your experience at Loronix. Rio de Janeiro is wonderful and I feel proud on showing this city at Loronix. Tracks include:
PersonnelWilson Benedetti
(sax tenor, clarinet)
J. B. Alves
(pistom)
Sidney Jacobino
(guitar)
Domingos Machado
(organ)
Tiao Santos
(bass)
Fernando Costa

04 – Quitessência (J. T. Meirelles)
05 – Sambach (Domingos Machado)
06 – The Blues Walk (C. Brow)

Hello, Good Evening! What a exciting day. When arriving home I use to check Loronix usage statistics and I got surprised when I saw we are above the daily average at 6pm. We will probably have the busiest day ever; thanks to Caetano Rodrigues releases and thanks to the great Brazilian Blog do Noblat, once again calling the attention of thousands of new friends to Loronix. I’m proud of it. You can see by yourself, here. Welcome new Loronixers!
Let’s start with a video today, a special one showing a great artist and some important places in Rio, such as: Toca do Vinicius, Antonio Carlos Jobim place, anyway, thanks Luiz Harding for sending Toquinho performing Insensatez on a very beautiful video full of vintage scenes.
Hope uEnjoy!

Conseguimos o vídeo graças ao amigo bOssas nOvas.
Segue outro vídeo lindíssimo com a Alaíde Costa cantando a mesma música. Pena que ele acaba antes de terminar …
I never heard about a second collaboration between Elizeth Cardoso and Zimbo Trio besides Elizeth Cardoso e Zimbo Trio – Elizeth e Zimbo Trio Balancam na Sucata (1969), already available at Loronix. I was “introduced” to this album on an old vinyl shop in Copacabana. If you appreciate the first, don’t miss this one, recorded at the same Sucata nightclub.
This is Elizeth Cardoso e Zimbo Trio – E de Manha (1970), for Copacabana, recorded live at Sucata Nightclub as part of a show directed by Herminio Bello de Carvalho. It is amazing how this record quality is so good taking in consideration the resources available in 1970. Elizeth and Zimbo Trio can be heard together in all tunes, except tracks 05 – Zazueira and 08 – Casa Forte, instrumental tracks featuring only Zimbo Trio.
Luiz Harding sent a video with excerpts of the Brazilian movie Noite Vazia (1964), directed by Walter Hugo Khuori with Zimbo Trio in charge of the soundtrack. I think this video fits very nice with this post, you can hear Zimbo Trio in the background while watching performances by the legendary Odette Lara and Norma Bengell. Tracks include:
01 – De Manhã (Caetano Veloso) Exaltação à Bahia (Vicente Paiva / Chianca de Garcia)
02 – Ilusão à Toa (Johnny Alf)
03 – Travessia (Milton Nascimento / Fernando Brant)
04 – Eu Disse Adeus (Roberto Carlos / Erasmo Carlos)
05 – Zazueira (Jorge Ben “Jorge Benjor”)
06 – O Conde (Evaldo Gouveia / Jair Amorim)
07 – De Onde Vens (Dori Caymmi / Nelson Motta)
08 – Casa Forte (Edu Lobo)
09 – Faixa de Cetim (Ary Barroso) Morro (Dunga / Mário Rossi) Sei Lá Mangueira (Paulinho da Viola / Hermínio Bello de Carvalho)

Hello, Good Evening! I will not talk about the weather again, but it seems summer will overlap the following seasons, ending at the beginning of next summer, at least in Brazil. Everything is all right with the folks from Bahia, the Brazilian state with sun 365 days a year. That’s the connection I’m trying to make: sub, Bahia and the legendary Dorival Caymmi, his first time on video at Loronix. Just to start this, how can I say, hot Sunday.
Hope uEnjoy!

Here we go on the new and successful video challenge, kindly sent by Luiz Harding. Today is different, just watch the video to be delighted with the images of – how can I say… – Rio de Janeiro. The challenge is to identify the artist singing in the background audio and also the name of the song.
Question: Who is the artist singing in the background audio?
Hope uEnjoy!

Let’s make it straight, this is another video powered by Luiz Harding. This time, even the master is amazed by his own creation, which is a Zumba Cinco video. Zumba Cinco is a Brazilian Bossa Jazz quintet that released a single album and than disappeared. This album is now a sought after collectors item. It is available at Loronix, you can find it using Find It!, sorry.
Thanks Luiz Harding, a Zumba Cinco video is something that I would never expect to see one day and you are now giving us the chance to watch it on a very good quality. Do not miss the video using the increase lens; it is bigger than our column space.
Hope uEnjoy!

Here comes Luiz Harding torturing us again with a video, torturing is the right word, once you see one you can stop waiting for the next. This one was supposed to be released on May, 12th, on Loronix anniversary, but is so cool that I could not wait. Caetano told me about this video and I had no hope to watch it. Now with Luiz, we can make it.
This is Os Bossa Tres performing on Arpoador Beach, Rio de Janeiro City. I hope Loronixers make the hard work this time, providing additional info. It is strongly recommended that you use the increase lens to see the original size.
Hope uEnjoy!

I will address several facts with this post, first, this is a mandatory instrumental music record from the 80′s, second, Amilson Godoy can now show his piano playing by a video available bellow and the last and most important one, the legendary Brazilian percussionist Theo da Cuica is a member of Grupo Medusa. I will tell later on who is Theo da Cuica.
This is Grupo Medusa – Ferrovias (1983), for Som da Gente, the second and last LP from this legendary instrumental group. The first LP is already available at Loronix and this one was kindly sent by Theo da Cuica, the percussionist at this album. Among the several musicians we have at Loronix, Theo is with us since the beginning, he is an active musician and performed with every Brazilian artist, listed on more than 1,000 (one thousand) records as musician.
Theo has launched a new CD, and wants to make it available to Loronixers in the forthcoming weeks. I’m very proud to be of help of a great musician like Theo. Thanks brother, I will catch you up this week to talk about this. By the way, the guy pictured is Theo da Cuica.
Luiz Harding, the tireless Loronix friend provides another video, Cesar Camargo Mariano with Zimbo Trio. Luiz Harding says this video brings an encounter that celebrates the end of some issues between Cesar Camargo Mariano Trio, Som Tres and Zimbo Trio.
Thanks a lot Luiz, your effort on transforming your collection to Loronixers is of real value to us and to the Music from Brazil as a whole, your work makes such wonderful moments eternal, otherwise they would fall only on memories of a few privileged friends.
Hope uEnjoy!
PS.: Luiz, let’s give a chance to Godoy next time!
