I know several fans of Dick Farney and this post is dedicated to all of them, but there is a special one, a Loronixer, that I want to mention, which is cvllos. If Dick Farney fans decide to name a leader, cvllos would be the one. I know very well the modus operandi of a fan and I’m wondering cvllos surprise in the morning when opening Loronix with this wonderful and very hard to find Dick Farney album, which is my choice for the last post today.

This is Dick Farney e Seu Trio – Dick Farney no Waldorf (1960), for Odeon. I’m only a little bit disappointed with this cover artwork, on my dreams, this cover had a beautiful photo of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in the night with lights and the name of Dick Farney on yellow. In the other hand, the music is much better than the soundtrack of my dreams with Dick Farney performing a repertoire based on the songs he played during one-year season at Waldorf Astoria, 1957. Dick Farney Trio members were not credited. Tracks include:

01 – These Foolish Things (J. Strachey)
02 – Jeepers Creepers (H. Warren / J. Mercer)
03 – Over The Rainbow (Harold Arlen / E. Y. Harburg)
04 – All Of Me (S. Simons / G. Marks)
05 – You Took Advantage Of Me (R. Rodgers / L. Hart)
06 – You Stepped Out Of a Dream (G. Kahn / N. H. Brown)
07 – Moonlight Becames You (V. Heusen / J. Burke)
08 – Lullaby Of Birdland (G. Shearing / B. Y. Forster)
09 – Waldorf Blues (Dick Farney)
10 – Não Tem Solução (Dorival Caymmi / Carlos Guinle)

.

It is disappointing when you do not give value to something based on personal criterion and mannerisms or taking the others opinion and the truth. That’s exactly what happened with the first collaboration between Dick Farney and Claudette Soares, Tudo Isto e Amor, Volume One. I thought Volume Two – made available a couple of weeks ago at Loronix – was the best album and I’m shamed to realize this week that Volume One is several times better than the previous one. Volume one is really nice and I decided to show it today to Loronixers, perhaps I feel better on making it.

This is Dick Farney & Claudette Soares – Tudo Isto e Amor (1976), for Odeon. Better repertoire, beautiful arrangements and breathtaking performances in duo or solo by Dick Farney and Claudette Soares. I have been reading today several reviews and this album is highly recommended, no exception. Dick Farney makes a fascinating rendition of Tenderly (Lawrence / Gross), made available bellow as a teaser showing Farney interpretations on top of images of Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of the last century. Tracks include:

01 – O Que É Amar (Johnny Alf)
02 – Minha Namorada (Carlos Lyra / Vinicius de Moraes)
03 – Este Seu Olhar (Tom Jobim)
04 – De Você Eu Gosto (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
05 – É Preciso Dizer Adeus (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
06 – Castigo (Dolores Duran)
07 – Tudo Isto É Amor (Laura Maria)
08 – Fotografia (Tom Jobim)
09 – Tenderly (Lawrence / Gross)
10 – O Nosso Olhar (Sergio Ricardo)
11 – Somos Dois (Armando Cavalcanti / Klécius Caldas / Luis Antônio)

I just spoke with Caetano by phone and he said the next package – a special and very different one – would be mailed tomorrow, first time in the morning. Tomorrow will be another day of tension on a day that seems to last 48 hours. Several other things are scheduled for tomorrow and I think it is better stop talking about it now before I spoil Caetano’s surprise with my big tongue.

These phone calls are also useful to get recommendations from Caetano and this album was celebrated when mentioned, by the way, what can go wrong when you have Dick Farney and Claudette Soares together? I really don’t know.

This is Dick Farney e Claudette Soares – Dick & Claudette | Tudo Isto e Amor Vol. 2 (1976), for Odeon, the second out of two albums released by Dick Farney in collaboration with Claudette Soares. This is not about Dick Farney piano accompanying Claudette Soares, they are singing together and the duets are beautiful, their voices and interpretation styles matches nicely. Personnel is not credited, but Dick Farney plays piano for sure and the legendary Saba from Jongo Trio is the executive producer. Tracks include:

01 – Chuva (Durval Ferreira / Pedro Camargo)
02 – Nós (Johnny Alf)
03 – Demais (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
04 – Casualmente (Berimbau)
05 – Fim de Caso (Dolores Duran)
06 – Apelo (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
07 – Nick Bar (José Vasconcelos)
08 – Preciso Aprender a Ser Só (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
09 – Ela Foi Embora (Oscar Bellandi / Djalma Ferreira)
10 – Tomara (Novelli / Paulo César Pinheiro / Maurício Tapajós)
11 – O Amor Em Paz (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)

Hello, Good Evening! Thanks for the response to Loronix survey reminder sent yesterday and to the automatic emails sent today for the friends who engage the survey, but did not reach the end. I want to make public an answer to a very common question made by email, Survey results will be made available at Loronix after survey ending keeping everybody’s privacy. The results will be shown in terms of grand total percentages, such as: ratio between gender, styles, etc. I established a personal norm, to do not look at the results while survey is being carried out. I’m very curious about the outcome.

Let’s start the day with an album requested by many Loronixers from an artist that gather many new fans since we start showing his music here.

This is Dick Farney – Dick Farney (1976), for Odeon. Several Dick Farney albums do not have a tile and people use to adopt nicknames to describe them, this one is also know as “the one with Dick Farney standing besides a pole”, as you can check at cover artwork. Personnel is not available this time, but I’m quite sure Dick Farney Trio, which is Dick Farney (piano), Toninho (drums) and Saba (bass). A very discrete orchestra accompaniment is available on some tracks. This album has the original recording of Aeromoca (Billy Blanco), the song that made several Loronixers amazed on a Brazilian airline video. Tracks include:

01 – Aeromoça (Billy Blanco)
02 – Um Cantinho e Você (José Maria de Abreu / Jair Amorim)
03 – Foi Você (Luis Bonfá)
04 – Inútil Paisagem (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
05 – Você Não Sabe Amar (Dorival Caymmi / Carlos Guinle / Hugo Lima)

Everybody knows that one of the best Brazilian music blogs, Unbreakable Microgrooves, has gone on a big hiatus. I spoke with Simon Boutman, which is the owner and maintainer of Microgrooves and we agree to make posts at Loronix of some albums that are not available there. I think this is an excellent idea and we will start with a recommendation from Simon Boutman, by the way, a really nice recommendation.

This is Dick Farney – Dick Farney Show (1961), for RGE. You will always find links to the original Microgrooves post, here. Dick Farney Show is his first LP from RGE, released just before Dick Farney made his move to Sao Paulo in the early 60′s. The legendary Maestro Enrico Simonetti arranges Dick Farney Show. Self-explanatory, what else can go wrong when you have Dick Farney and Maestro Simonetti together? Thanks Simon for open this new channel between our websites and communities. Tracks include:

I was really happy when I found this album that I had only a copy sent by a friend on MP3s files. Now I can say that I’m a happy owner of the original LP issue on a very good quality, almost not played before. It is also a pleasure to share another Dick Farney album, by the way, one of the greatest albums he made.

Dick Farney has been surprising many Jazz fans around the world that are tuned at Loronix. I have received more than a few emails from friends outside of Brazil sending greetings for discovering Dick Farney. I said it before and I want to say it again, Dick Farney and Lucio Alves where favorites of many renowned artists that emerged from the Bossa Nova age, such as Antonio Carlos Jobim and others. I’m making available a picture found at Rui Castro’s Bossa Nova book of a wallet from a member of the legendary Sinatra-Farney Fan Club, just to give you an idea of how important was Dick Farney.

This is Dick Farney – Penumbra Romance (1971), for London. We can say that Penumbra Romance is between the singer and the pianist, since Dick Farney Trio accompanies Dick Farney, which are Dick Farney (piano), Toninho (drums) and Saba (bass). The song Teresa da Praia has the participation of Lucio Alves as a special guest and worth entire record. Tracks include:

I was not planning to show friends another Dick Farney today. I was pretty tired and decided to take a nap one hour ago listening this album. It is beautiful. I never heard this Dick Farney, recommended by cvllos a couple of days ago. So I decided to make it, since I want to write about it with the same feelings and good vibrations I had in the last 35 minutes while listening.

This is Dick Farney – Um Piano ao Cair da Tarde (1974), for Odeon, featuring Dick Farney and piano, only, performing a repertoire of American standards. What can I say? Once again, self-explanatory. Everything works fine with this instrumental Dick Farney album, followed by Um Piano ao Cair da Tarde Vol. 2, that I’m looking for months. Additionally, a music video is included with Dick Farney at one of his most successful interpretations, Alguem Como Tu (Jose Maria de Abreu / Jair Amorim). Dick Farney is really essential. Tracks include:

01 – Tenderly (J. Lawrence / W. Gross)
02 – As Time Goes By (H. Hupfeld)
03 – The Man I Love (Ira Gershwin / George Gershwin)
04 – All Te Things You Are (Kern / O. Hammerstein II)
05 – The More I See You (H. Warren / M. Gordon)
06 – I’m Gettin’ Sentimental Over You (Bassman / Washington)
07 – Moonglow (W. Hudson / De Lange / I. Mills)
08 – Laura (J. Mercer / D. Raksin)
09 – Over The Rainbow (Harold Arlen / E. J. Harburg)
10 – What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life (Michel Legrand / A. Bergman / M. Bergman)
11 – Misty (Errol Garner / J. Burke)
12 – The Shadow Of Your Smile (J. Mandel / Paul Francis Webster)
13 – Here’s That Rainy Day (J. Burke / J. Van Heusen)

.

Não tinha esse disco. Porém, graças aos amigos Andreas e Martoni, ele agora está disponível na Rádio Forma e Elenco.

Quanto ao vídeo, encontrei duas versões de “Alguém como tu” com o Dick Farney no Youtube. Seguem as duas. De acordo com o bOssas nOvas, a postada originalmente pelo Zeca foi a segunda.

I cannot remember how many albums by Dick Farney showing his “singing side” are already available at Loronix. Perhaps without noticing, I’ve been picking Dick Farney instrumental side more frequently. This nice LP comes to fulfill this gap, showing Dick Farney singing on a very reduced accompaniment by his own piano and a small combo. Let’s see how it works.

This is Dick Farney – Dick Farney (1973) for Odeon. Little is know about this album recording session that shows Farney singing as a performing on a nightclub. I’m a big fan of Dick Farney and perhaps not the right guy to describe this album, beautiful and with a adequate touch of sadness on his singing and piano playing. What you see at this nice cover is exactly what you get, a great opportunity for those who wants to get along with his art of singing. Tracks include:

01 – Nick Bar (José Vasconcelos)
02 – Sempre Teu (José Maria de Abreu / Jair Amorim)
03 – Ser Ou Não Ser (José Maria de Abreu / Alberto Ribeiro)
04 – Embraceable You (George Gershwin / Ira Gershwin)
05 – Esquece (Gilberto Milfont)
06 – Fotografia (Tom Jobim)
07 – Somos Dois (Armando Cavalcanti / Klécius Caldas / Luis Antônio)
08 – Meu Rio de Janeiro (Nelson Trigueiro / Oscar Bellandi)
09 – The Lady Is a Tramp (L. Hart / R. Rodgers)
10 – Ranchinho de Palha (Luis Bonfá)
11 – Sem Esse Céu (Luis Bonfá)
12 – Ela Foi Embora (Oscar Bellandi / Djalma Ferreira)

Here we go again with this amazing record that deserves the status of the “closing post” of the day. However, it always happen, I look at this cover late at night and I fell disturbed and afraid, so let’s make it earlier, a wonderful LP showing the jazz pianist side of this great artist.

This is Dick Farney Trio – 5 Anos de Jazz (1977), for London, recorded live. I don’t know where this LP was record, maybe on a small place taking in consideration the number of hands clapping. I spoke with Caetano in Sao Paulo about this LP and he strongly recommends, Caetano does not use to be wrong. Dick Farney Trio is Dick Farney (piano), Saba (bass) and Toninho (drums). I’m showing a video originally posted on YouTube by the great Loronixer Paulo Bitencourt. You can visit his website at http://www.bitencourt.net. As Paulo said, this is a late Dick Farney and his voice is not on his best, he sings Copacabana and I strongly recommend that you watch it.

Tracks include:

01. Brandenburg Gate (Dave Brubeck)
02. Autumn Leaves (Les Feuilles Mortes) (Kosma / J. Prevert / Mercer)
03. We’ll Be Together Again (Fischer / Laine)
04. Besame Mucho (Consuelo Velasquez)
05. Three To Get Ready (Dave Brubeck)
06. Our Love Is Here To Stay (Ira Gershwin / George Gershwin)

Here is another Dick Farney LP at Loronix. It is amazing how Dick Farney is getting popular here, not by his singing, but for his piano playing. Several friends write me really pleased when they realize that Dick Farney is not only a singer, also a top-notch jazz pianist. This whole LP is from the piano side of Dick Farney. I will show you.

This is Dick Farney – Dick Farney Jazz (1962), for RGE, kindly provided by Caetano to Loronixers. This LP had an reissue in CD, 1994, going out of print later on. Caetano shares with us the CD edition, so you will have a high quality sound with no scratches from the old LPs.

Dick Farney has the accompaniment of great musicians on an early stage of their carrers. Claudio Slon plays drums; the third from left to right, just arrived from Argentina, his birth land. If Slon looks familiar, you are probably remembering an Astrud Gilberto cover artwork, A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness. Unfortunately Claudio has passed a few years ago, in 2002. The sax player is the legendary Hector Costita, also from Argentina. Costita is a well-known artist to many Loronixers who had alread the chance to reach Costita’s earlier releases. The bass player is Mario Algusto Monteiro da Silva. Tracks include:

01 – Swanee RiverR (S. Foster)
02 – These Foolish Things (Marvel Strachey)
03 – Rge Blues (Dick Farney)
04 – Improviso Nº 1 (Dick Farney)
05 – Georgia On My Mind (S. Gorrel / H. Carmichael)
06 – Tangerine (Mercer / Schertzinger)
07 – Improviso Nº 2 (Dick Farney)

Perhaps today is the day zecalouro is posting to Loronixers his mega-rare releases. Jam Session das Folhas – Dick Farney e Booker Pittman (1961) is very rare vinyl collectors item.

This LP was recorded live in the end of 1960 at the auditorium of a Brazilian newspaper, Folha de Sao Paulo. As zecalouro told before, Dick Farney was an outstanding singer and an awesome pianist who contributed decisively to the renovation of Brazilian popular music, incorporating jazz harmonies and style.

Dick was at the piano on all tracks, accompanied by Heraldo do Monte (guitar), Luiz Chaves (bass), Paulinho (drums) among others. Booker plays sax and sings on some tracks.

Saturday night, zecaloura at home – in fact, making noise to get me out of Loronix -, dinner and glass of wine… A Great plan, that never goes wrong if you have an old and good Dick Farney playing…

Dick Farney was an outstanding singer, instrumentalist and composer who contributed decisively to the renovation of Brazilian popular music with the incorporation of jazz harmonies and style. Farney had hits in Brazil that announced the soon-to-be bossa nova genre, such as “Copacabana” and “Teresa da Praia”.

In 1954, Farney started his association with Tom Jobim, announcing the forthcoming Bossa Nova times; in that year, “Teresa da Praia” (Tom Jobim/Billy Blanco) became a huge hit, interpreted by Farney and Lúcio Alves.
