Last year, I started a series of releases summarizing several Singles, EPs on a single posts. I would never make such think today, Singles and EPs were an essential part of an artist discography until the mid 80′s and we need to approach them such like we do with regular LPs. Once in a while I will make some posts on this size, making really relevant peaks.

Such like this one. I had this EP. I cannot remember how it was gone. However I could get if back on good conditions and it is so good that I want to show it for Loronix friends.

This is Elis Regina – “Madalena” (1970), for Philips as 441.473. This EP includes two tracks that were only released on LP a year later at Ela, Madalena and Falei e disse. Unfortunately, I don’t have Ela, so I cannot guarantee if both tunes were released such like presented here or recorded for Ela. This is “Elis Regina as a Glance”, all tracks are wonderful. Arrangements by Maestro Erlon Chaves e Chico de Moraes. Tracks include:

01 – Madalena (Ivan Lins / Ronaldo Monteiro de Souza)
02 – Fechado Pra Balanço (Gilberto Gil)
03 – Falei E Disse (Baden Powell / Paulo César Pinheiro)
04 – Vou Deitar E Rolar (Paulo César Pinheiro / Baden Powell)

Hello, Good night! May 12th is approaching fast. Nothing special on this day. I have friends that are maniac with special dates, such as birthday, 1 year of dating, one year of wedding, among several other examples. I really don’t mind. May, 12th celebrates a day that I never imagine we could reach, it is the celebration of one year since the first Loronix post. It is a Saturday and Caetano’s mind is on 1,000 KHz of ideas. Tomorrow, we will let you know about a great Caetano’s idea that we will need your feedback to make it happen. Meanwhile, let’s check this record, another fine release sponsored by Caetano Rodrigues.

This is Phil Woods – Astor & Elis (1996), for Chesky, featuring the sax and clarinet of Phil Woods on a personal and passionate tribute for Astor Piazzolla and Elis Regina. Actually, the first plan was to make a whole album to Elis Regina, which is Woods’ favorite singer, he said he always take a couple of Elis Regina albums when touring, along with some Charlie Parker, some Billie Holiday, etc.

Five out of the eleven titles in the album are by Astor Piazzolla, and another, Piece for Piazzolla is Phil’s tribute to him. The rest of the tunes are Brazilian, excepting Con Alma by Dizzie Gillespie. Caetano strongly recommends this record and Phil Woods’s albums with Brazilian music and Brazilian artists always take me by surprise. It is really wonderful that Phil Woods dedicated an entire recording to these really important artists from Brazil and Argentina. Tracks include:

01 – Dois pra La, Dois pra Ca
02 – Piece for Piazzolla
03 – Adios Nonino
04 – Oblivion
05 – Milonga del Angel
06 – Leija’s Game
07 – Invierno Porteno
08 – Elis
09 – Introduction to Cais / Atras da Porta
10 – Nada Sera Como Antes
11 – Con Alma

Hello, good night! I received an email from a Loronix friend saying that the LPs I’m releasing at Loronix and purchased by R$ 1,00 is some kind of parrot or zecalouro lie. He said that I don’t have anything to write and I start creating impossible stories such as these one real LP purchases. This friend wrote in English and probably never has been in Brazil. Actually, Brazil is the country of the LPs and the offer is big. With persistence, you can find some really good opportunities. I will not say that this one was taken for R$ 1.00, this was a little bit more – R$ 5.00 – and even by 10 or 15 worth the acquisition price. This is Elis Regina – Transversal do Tempo (1978), for Philips, considered one of the best Elis Regina live performances albums. This LP was never played before and I think this price is due an error on cover printing, the wrong alignment makes the track list bleed outside of the paper. Anyway, it is a nice set that I never heard before, featuring Cesar Camargo Mariano on keyboards, playing on the 70′s style, full of effects, etc. This was also one of the most political oriented presentations by Elis Regina; several tracks have a political accent. But when Elis Regina is in charge of the show, nothing can go wrong and here it seems that she was at her best. I heard it today with a lot of pleasure. I hope you have the same good feelings. Tracks include:

01 – Fascinação (Fascination) (F. D. Marchetti / Armando Louzada)
02 – Sinal Fechado (Paulinho da Viola)
03 – Deus Lhe Pague (Chico Buarque)
04 – O Rancho da Goiabada (João Bosco / Aldir Blanc) — Construção (Chico Buarque)
05 – Saudosa Maloca (Adoniran Barbosa)
06 – Boto (Tom Jobim / Jararaca)
07 – Cão Sem Dono (Sueli Costa / Paulo César Pinheiro)
08 – Meio Termo (Lourenço Baeta / Cacaso) — Corpos (Ivan Lins / Vitor Martins)
09 – Querelas do Brasil (Maurício Tapajós / Aldir Blanc)
10 – Cartomante (Ivan Lins / Vitor Martins)

This is Elis Regina – Transversal do Tempo (1978), at Loronix.  Hope uEnjoy!

Elis Regina e Conjunto de Cesar Camargo Mariano – Live in Tokyo (1979)

I spoke with Caetano a few hours ago and I’m happy to made that call. Caetano remembered me an important date, Elis Regina passing twenty-five years ago. It seems it was yesterday. I remember this day, I was playing guitar at my grandfather’s house with a group of friend when the new came from someone who told us. I was very young to understand what would be Elis Regina’s passing along the forthcoming decades, but I got really sad, as I use to be everytime we heard about an artist passing.

Caetano said that would be a shame if Loronix does not make anything to remember Elis Regina and that’s what we decided to do. This is Elis Regina e Conjunto de Cesar Camargo Mariano – Ao Vivo em Tokyo (1979), for Loronix Records (I could not resist, sorry!). Actually, this is not an Elis Regina career record, but the recording of her performance with Cesar Camargo Mariano on a live presentation made in Tokyo, 1979. I received this recording from a friend and the quality is pretty good.

Conjunto de Cesar Camargo Mariano accompanies Elis Regina and includes Cesar Camargo Mariano (piano), Helio Delmiro (guitar), Luizao (bass), Paulinho Braga (drums) and Chico Batera (percussion). The cover artwork is by zecalouro. If someone can prepare a better one, we will be pleased; if possible, we can replace this one. No tracks this time, but you will have 41 minutes of Elis Regina on a recording that probably nobody could hear before.

Elis Regina deserves more, so I’m showing the first songs performed by Elis at Montreux Jazz Festival.

Repost | Elis Regina & Hermeto Pascoal – Montreux Jazz Festival – Live (1979)

I have been receiving many requests from new Loronixers to repost this great LP recorded by Elis Regina and Hermeto Pascoal in Montreux Jazz Festival, 1979. Here is the new chance. I will keep the original post info by zecalouro. Do not miss the wonderful album review written by Stefan Sittig.Original post text:Let’s close the Brazilian Divas pool acclaiming the winner, Elis Regina. This LP was recorded in 1979, Montreux Jazz Festival with Hermeto Pascoal. The album was kept unreleased until 1982 and it is a unique Elis Performance that zecalouro is making available to Loronixers.zecalouro can’t make it better than the review wrote by Stefan Sittig at Amazon, as follows:This LP captures Elis’s brilliant performance at the 1979 Montreux Jazz Festival. The reason the album had not previously been released is because ticket sales had been so huge for Elis’s show in Montreux, that the producers decided to add a matinee the same day of the evening show. Elis performed at the matinee, knocked them dead, but then lost steam for the evening show. She was tired, feeling wiped out from giving her all in the afternoon. Although Elis did get through the entire concert and at the end of that evening’s performance, she was invited back on stage by Hermeto Pascoal to do some jamming sessions. Feeling perhaps revitalized, or more relaxed since the concert itself was over, Elis gave it her all and gave brilliant/improvisational renditions of classics of Bossa Nova, like “Corcovado”, “Girl From Ipanema” and others. And Elis left the festival feeling at least vindicated for having sung well at the improv session with Pascoal.

But she was unhappy with the evening show, it wasn’t good enough for Elis and she had her record producer promise never to release that concert live.

But 2 years later, after Elis had died, the record producer realized that they had also taped the afternoon show which had been wonderful! He then felt he must somewhat betray Elis’s trust and find the master tapes for that stunning afternoon performance.

Well, he did and that, together with the improv/jam session with Pascoal, are what have been included in this latest CD release. And let me tell you, what a JOYOUS sound Elis produces, all the tracks are excellent, really, there are no stand-outs, all are uniformly brilliant.

Perhaps her jam session with Pascoal will be the most interesting section for her faithful, longtime fans, because she interprets classics in a totally new way. I can’t think of another singer, except for perhaps Ella Fitzgerald, who could improv/scat/jam as well as Elis does in the session with Pascoal.

Pure brilliance, and a must-have for fans.

When Elis sings Tom Jobim repertoire with Jobim nothing can go wrong. Elis gives her best interpretation ever on this album, exceeding the expectations. The way she sings Aguas de Marco is the ultimate gift for our soul. It’s difficult to choose the best music because all of them are “the best”. But “Retrato em Branco e Preto” is unbelievable. The “Maestro” plays the piano and both – Elis and Jobim – deliver the most beautiful music ever. If one wants to have one disc of Brazilian music, this is the one. Attention to “Brigas, nunca mais” – Elis is pure rhythm.

I’m sure that you will enjoy another anthological Bossa Nova show, Elis Regina – Elis no Teatro Da Praia Com Miele & Bôscoli (1970), recorded live at Teatro da Praia, Rio de Janeiro for Philips. The repertoire has several well-known Brazilian songs with some orientation to the upcoming 70′s decade instead of Bossa Nova classics from the 60′s, including Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque, Gilberto Gil, Jorge Ben, among others.

Elis Regina shares the spotlight with Miele and Ronaldo Boscoli, backed by Roberto Menescal, Jurandir, Ze Roberto Bertrami, Wilson das Neves and Hermes. Luiz Carlos Miele, for those who do not know, is an important artist for Bossa Nova, maybe one day we make his debut at Loronix. Tracks include:

01 – Pout-Pourri: Casa Forte (Edu Lobo) — Reza (Edu Lobo / Ruy Guerra) — Noite dos Mascarados (Chico Buarque) — Samba da Bênção (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes) — Makin’ Whoopee (W. Donaldson / G. Kahn)

02 – Zazueira (Jorge Ben “Jorge Benjor”)
03 – Minha (Francis Hime / Ruy Guerra)
04 – Irene (Caetano Veloso)

05 – Musical de Gala: Eu e a Brisa (Johnny Alf) — Preciso Aprender a Ser Só (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle) — Carolina (Chico Buarque) — Nunca Mais (Dorival Caymmi) — Franqueza (Denis Brean / Osvaldo Guilherme) — Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Você (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)

06 – Aquele Abraço (Gilberto Gil)
07 – Can’t Take My Eyes Of You (B. Crewe / B. Gaudio)
08 – Se Você Pensa (Roberto Carlos / Erasmo Carlos)

Elis Regina – Viva a Brotolandia (1961) is Elis Regina debut LP, recorded with an early Elis with only 16 years old. We need to check, but I heard before that Elis did not consider this LP as “valid”, since she was very young and immature as a singer.

Several Loronixers were requesting this post. Viva a Brotolandia has the late 50′s flavor with Severino Filho Orquestra. Let’s see how Elis gets along with a recording session at the age of sixteen. Tracks include:

01 – Dá Sorte (Eleu Salvador)
02 – Sonhando (Dream) (B. Vorzon / Ellis / Vrs. Juvenal Fernandes)
03 – Murmúrio (Luis Antônio / Djalma Ferreira)
04 – Tu Serás (Ângela Martignoni / Othon Russo)
05 – Samba Feito Para Mim (Paulo Tito)
06 – Fala-me de Amor (Take Me In Your Arms) (Markus / Rotter / Vrs. Max Gold)
07 – Baby Face (Davis / Akst / Vrs. Fred Jorge)
08 – Dor de Cotovelo (João Roberto Kelly)
09 – Garoto Último Tipo (Puppy Love) (Paul Anka / Vrs. Fred Jorge)
10 – As Coisas Que Eu Gosto (My Favorite) (Rodgers / O. Hammerstein II / Vrs. Fernando César)
11 – Mesmo de Mentira (Carlos Imperial)
12 – Amor Amor (Love Love) (B. Caesar / Vrs. Carlos Imperial)

zecalouro invites you to see how Elis Regina manages a real challenge: sing together with Pele, the best soccer player everm on this 1969 EP, Tabelinha Elis Regina e Pele.

This is a rare curiosity, really cool. The first Pele Album. Both tracks – Perdao Nao Tem and Vexamao are Pele compositions. Pele always want to be an artist. He plays guitar and zecalouro remembers to watch Pele playing and singing as a guest on TV shows in Brazil.

This 1969 Elis Regina is the one zecalouro likes most. Elis at her best. A wonderful JazzBossa piece closing the breezy 60′s style greatly.

Roberto Menescal is the arranger and adds a lot of beauty to the final outcome. Elis vocals are wonderful as always, full of scats on a track list that goes from Milton Nascimento, Gismonti, Edu Lobo and even a French song - that the lazy zecalouro cannot remember.

It is a great closing of a wonderful decade. Elis at her best and a non-stop blend of incredible Bossa Nova tracks in a row.

A few posts ago, we were introduced to Roberto Menescal – O Conjunto de Roberto Menescal, assembled by Elis Regina for her 1969 European tour. Elis Regina was outstanding even beyond her vocals, she also knew very well how to choose her musicians and arrangers.

This album – Aquarela do Brasil, Toots Thielemans & Elis Regina (1969) was recorded in Sweden during this tour. This record is as good as the last Elis & Tom, maybe better.

This is an 1963 Elis Regina – Selftitled – third career album. Elis stills pretty young here but displays an advanced stage of artistry, confident and swinging throughout the album, and in supreme control of her voice. She scats over “Formiguinha Triste,” toying with a saxophone very reminiscent of Stan Getz.

Astor makes the arrangements, assembling a small bossa nova group with muted brass and reeds, lending a superb accompaniment to Brazil’s brightest young singer.

This is a special post to a Loronix’s friend, the second Elis Regina album Samba eu Canto Assim from 1964.

I will ask for AMG to help us on describe a little bit about this record.

Leading a brassy main-room orchestra, Elis Regina exerts a considerable amount of power on 1965′s Samba, Eu Canto Assim!. She swings her way through Edu Lobo’s “Rez” while the stringssaw sweetly in the background and salutes great Brazilian composers ranging from Dorival Caymmi (“João Valentão”), Marcos Valle (“Preciso Aprender a Ser So”), and Vinicius and Baden Powell (a potpourri comprising “Consolação,” “Berimbau,” and “Tem Dó”). ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
