Hello, Good Evening! Brazilian music festivals, the famous Festivais da Cancao from the 60′s, were used to reveal new artists and also improve the career of known artists with their participation; Brazilian festivals were sponsored and produced by TV channels. Brazilian TV also produced “show de calouros”, a TV contest to reveal new artists. A Grande Chance was probably one of the most successful in this format and we are presenting here the live recording of the second edition. Let’s see!

This is As Revelacoes da Grande Chance 2 (1968), for Codil Ritmos, the second edition of new artists contest, presented by Flavio Cavalcanti and produced by TV Tupi. I will be straightforward on my writing, Refer will pop-up in a matter of hours with all details, but this second edition had Leci Brandao as the winner, performing the song Riqueza, Pobreza. The cast brings artists that could make further recordings and others that are really obscure, such as Inema Trio, Os Solfas, Gessy Willians, among others. This should make the happiness of those who kept memories of A Grande Chance, broadcasted on TV to a great audience in Brazil. Tracks include:

PerformersMarilia Barbosa
Paulo Roberto

Cesar Costa Filho

Jayme da Conceicao
Lecy Brandao

Hello, Good Evening! I received a hint from our very good Loronix friend David Simonetta, his idea was to show Loronixers music from the legendary MBP festivals from the 60′s and videos with the performances, when available. I’m sure this idea will generate a really good series of daily posts. Let’s take Davids suggestion starting with the first out of the three volume series taken from a 1967 Festival, let’s check.

This is III Festival da MPB Rede Record, SP, Volume 1 (1967), for Philips. There is a lot to talk about the “A Era dos Festivais” (Festivals Era) of Brazilian popular music, but it is better start with this first album and get feedback from Loronixers. Hello, Good Evening! Let’s start today with an additional post from Caetano birthday celebration from yesterday. I’ve been wondering how my preferences changed since I started Loronix. I did not care about compilation or various artists records and now I’m a big fan of them, sometimes they keep hidden treasures inside and shows artists we never heard before.

This is Festival do Rio – As 10 Mais Lindas Cancoes de Amor (1960), for Copacabana. Once again, Copacabana pleases us with a fantastic cover artwork showing a Pao de Acucar angle that is not common to be seen on postcards, etc. The photo was taken in front of Praia Vermelha, Urca. That monument stills there and that white house behind the palm trees is also there. If you come to Rio, don’t miss this place, it is walking distance from the cable car that takes people to Sugar Loaf and it is neglected by travel operators. A couple of years ago, a workout track was built behind the mountain and it is very nice. You can walk along the side of Sugar Loaf with the water on your right and the rock on your left. I need to come back to that place.

Sorry, almost forgot to speak about the music. I think this is a album with the best tunes of a supposed festival. Liner notes does not give any hint about it. You will find ten songs performed by Miltinho, Luciene Franco, Ernani Filho, Carlos Jose, Agnaldo Rayol, Roberto Silva, Lenita Bruno, Ted Moreno, Zeze Gonzaga and Jorge Goulart. Maestro Pachequinho and Gustavo Carvalho “Guarana” are the arrangers and Joab Teixeira Coral and Orquestra Copacabana go together with the cast. Tracks include:

01 – Poema do Adeus (Luis Antônio) - MILTINHO
02 – Ternura Antiga (Ribamar (1) / Dolores Duran) - LUCIENNE FRANCO
03 – Será Tarde (Renan França / Vera Falcão) - ERNANI FILHO
04 – Procura Sonhar Comigo Esta Noite (Abílio Lessa) - CARLOS JOSE
05 – Eu Não Tenho Para Onde Ir (Édson Borges) - AGNALDO RAYOL
06 – Ressurreição dos Velhos Carnavais (Lamartine Babo) - ROBERTO SILVA 07 – Seu Amor Você (Newton Mendonça) - LENITA BRUNO
08 – Canção Em Tom Maior (Ary Barroso) - TED MORENO
09 – Afinal Chegaste (Paulo Soledade) - ZEZE GONZAGA
10 – O Céu Virá Depois (Sergio Malta) - JORGE GOULART

I’m not exactly a fan of the several LPs released with live recording of the Brazilian Festivals from the 60′s, but this one is really different. This is 4o Festival da Balança – Various Artists (1966) for RCA, considered by its organizations as the greatest University show of all times.

4o Festival da Balanca was recorded live in October 1965 in Sao Paulo at Esporte Clube Pinheiros, organized by Faculdade de Direito Mackenzie. The festival has organized by a group of students lead by Manoel Poladian, also student that became a renowned producer at the 80′s. The selection made by RCA brings nine tracks with Jongo Trio, Maricenne Costa, Pedrinho Mattar Trio, Maria Bethania, Marisa Gata Mansa, Trio 3D, Coral da Universidade Mackenzie, Os Farroupilhas and Gilberto Gil. An estimate of 4,000 people was on the gig. Who were there? I wish I could… Tracks include:

01 - Jongo Trio - Pot-pourri: Dorival Caymmi with João Valentão (Dorival Caymmi) — O Mar (Dorival Caymmi) — Canção da Partida (Dorival Caymmi) — História de Pescadores (Dorival Caymmi) — Pescaria (Canoeiro) (Dorival Caymmi) — Noite de Temporal (Dorival Caymmi) — A Jangada Voltou Só (Dorival Caymmi) — É Doce Morrer no Mar (Dorival Caymmi)

02 – Amanhã (Walter Santos / Tereza Souza) with Maricene Costa
03 – Berimbau (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes) with Pedrinho Mattar Trio
04 – Maria Bethania performing Missa Agrária (Carlos Lyra / Gianfrancesco Guarnieri) and Carcará (João do Vale / José Cândido)
