Varios Artistas – Mancini Também e Samba (1966)

Caetano Rodrigues has a special care on dates, I can say he is my personal special dates consultant. He made a phone call today to remind me of a special date, really special by the way, today, 14th June, landmarks the passing of the great Maestro Henry Mancini 14 years ago. We take a lot of time thinking on a homage to Henry Mancini, while the solution was in front of us and already available at Loronix, one of our favorite records, a constellation of Brazilian music on studio making jazzy renditions of Henry Mancini repertoire. This is what I consider an essential.

This is Mancini Tambem e Samba (1962) for Mocambo. I don’t know what is the story behind this recording session, seems to me that these guys made a fan tribute to Henry Mancini, taking the studio by assault to record these twelve breathtaking Henry Mancini songs on top of Jazz and Samba rhythms. Everybody considers Waltel Branco as the main performer of Mancini Tambem e Samba and I will make different here, dedicating this post to Henry Mancini and to the artists on this set, listed just bellow. This is the second contribution of a great friend that, from now on, we will call as the already legendary Mr. E. What a great contribution, a release that puts an end on several doubts and assumptions taken from spare sources.

Meet, Conjuntos de Jose Marinho, Netinho, Waltel Branco e Joao Donato – Dance Conosco (1960), for Copacabana. Yes! That’s great Mr. E. this is a sought-after LP, featuring four top-notch musicians and their respective accompaniment bands or Seus Conjuntos.

Joao Donato plays trombone on his tracks with the help of Altamiro Carrilho on flute. Jose Marinho plays piano, Netinho, clarinet and Waltel Branco plays guitar. Another curiosity, everybody says that the cover is awful, quite disconnected from the great instrumental music we have inside. I don’t think so, it is a appealing cover and according with Copacabana – the back cover and the linear notes are included with the music -, this is a LP for dancing and the cover is perfect on this idea. Thanks once again, Mr. E. Attention for both Donato instrumental tracks, composed with Joao Gilberto. Tracks include:

01 – La Leyenda Del Beso (Paso Dias / R. Soutullo / J. Vert / E. Reoyo) – José Marinho e Seu Conjunto
02 – Ginga do Caramujo (Orlando Costa ”Maestro Cipó”) – Netinho e Seu Conjunto
03 – Devaneio (Djalma Ferreira / Luis Antônio) – Waltel Branco e Seu Conjunto
04 – Caravan (Mills / Duke Ellington / Tizol) – José Marinho e Seu Conjunto
05 – Mambinho (João Donato) – João Donato e Seu Conjunto with Altamiro Carrilho (flute)
06 – Minha Saudade (João Donato / João Gilberto) – João Donato e Seu Conjunto with Altamiro Carrilho (flute)
07 – Mambo Tropical (José Marinho) – José Marinho e Seu Conjunto
08 – Sob o Luar (Waltel Branco / Ivo Branco) – Waltel Branco e Seu Conjunto
09 – I Could Have Danced All Night (A. J. Lerner / F. Loeve) – Netinho e Seu Conjunto

Hello, Good night! Everybody is excited with the new Laurindo Almeida blog announced yesterday. I’m also happy, the video with The Modern Jazz Quartet is truly amazing and those impossible to find Laurindo Almeida LPs are unique.

Let’s take advantage of this “guitar” mood with a LP that brings together two legends of Brazilian guitar playing, Rosinha de Valenca e Waltel Branco – Violao em Dois Estilos (1980), for Som Livre, never released on CD and very hard to find.

I’m always reluctant to say if an album is good or not, but I’m breaking this rule now: nice record. Rosinha and Waltel do not play together, Rosinha performs tracks 01 to 05 and Waltel Branco guitar can be heard on tracks 06 to 11. Bass, drums and piano accompanies some tracks, while others are just acoustic guitar solo, unfortunately, personnel in the set is not listed. Tracks include:

01 – Porto das Flores (Rosinha de Valença)
02 – Asa Branca (Luis Gonzaga / Humberto Teixeira)
03 – Valsa de Euridice (Vinicius de Moraes)
04 – Bala Com Bala (João Bosco / Aldir Blanc)
05 – Morena do Mar (Dorival Caymmi)
06 – Bachiana Nº 5 (Villa-Lobos)
07 – Ponteio (Waltel Branco)
08 – Siciliana (Maria Thereza Paradis) version: Waltel Blanco
09 – Diferenças Sobre Guarda-me Las Vacas (Luis de Novaes) version: Waltel Blanco
10 – Minueto (Johann Sebastian Bach) version: Waltel Blanco
11 – Prelúdio Nº 13 (Johann Sebastian Bach) version: Waltel Blanco

Waltel Branco – Guitarra Bossa Nova (1963)

zecalouro must be wrong, but Waltel Branco is not well known in Brazil, even overseas. Friend of Joao Gilberto, Waltel took part on early Bossa Nova years being later on – after a short stay in Cuba – member of Dizzy Gillespie and Henry Mancini (collaborating with Pink Panter soundtrack).

This is his 1963 Guitarra Bossa Nova – also known as Guitarras em Fogo. Believe me, Baden Powell is credit here on Guitarras em Fogo track. Another fantastic example of how cool, surprising and never ending music we can gather from the 60′s.
