I made some research about this LP almost a year ago and for an unknown reason I forgot its existence to consider as a post. Came back to memory last year, actually, last Friday, and it is so cool that I decided to show to Loronixer with no other additional research.

Maybe I’m wrong but, Som Ambiente – Som Ambiente (1972), for CID, is in fact some sort of Azymuth embryo/early stage. I’m not sure about the whole personnel listing, but I have the assumption that Jose Roberto Bertrami organ can be heard in all tracks. The back cover says that Durval Ferreira is in charge of Artistic Direction. Another curiosity about this LP is a supposed photo of the legendary Marcos Valle at the front cover, that guy on a restaurant with a girl. If any Loronix friend has additional info about this release, please let us know. Tracks include:

01 – O Bofe (Erasmo Carlos / Roberto Carlos)
02 – Here’s That Rainy Day (J. Burke / J. V. Heusen)
03 – Bossa Nova In Broadway (Dave Brubeck)
04 – They Long To Be (Close To You) (H. Davis / Burt Bacharach) — People (Funny Girl) (B. Merrill / J. Styne) — Mr Lucky (Henry Mancini)
05 – Love Theme From “The Godfather” (Speak Softly Love) (Nino Rota / L. Kusik)
06 – Where Is The Love (J. Dorn / A. Mardin)
07 – Águas de Março (Tom Jobim) — Bala Com Bala (Aldir Blanc / João Bosco)
08 – Theme From “Summer Of 42” (Michel Legrand / A. Bergman / M. Bergman)
09 – By The Time I Get To Phoenix (J. Webb) — The Shadow Of Your Smile (J. Madel / Paul Francis Webster)
10 – Days Of Wine And Roses (Henry Mancini / Mercer) — Satin Doll (Duke Ellington) — April In Paris (H. Duke) — Lill’darling (N. Hefty)
11 – Live For Life (F. Lai / Norman Gimbel) — Someday My Prince Will Come (Churchill / Morey)

Thanks for this. Beautiful organ and Rhodes. Love the cover with Mr. Valle working the ladies. What I’d really like to know is who is handling drums? The playing is tight as hell.

Mikail,

This lady with Valle is supposed to be his first wife. Pretty solid record, perhaps the drummer is the same of early Azimuth formation.

Cheers, zecalouro

Ah yes. I bought this LP in the L.O. Matta sebo in Copacabana in about 1993 and when I started Whatmusic it was one of the records I really wanted to reissue. Maybe not to everyone’s taste, but the classic cover reminds me some strange nightclub places in Copa that still existed even then in the early 90s, and the version of By The Time I Get to Phoenix/Shadow of Your Smile is just majestic,

Gary,

L.O. Matta sebo is a sanctuary. The best in Rio! It is amazing that you found this one there.

Really nice!

Yes, Zeca. I used to enter there and my hear would start pounding. This was in the days before there were other gringos buying these records and the miserable woman who worked there was always so rude! The blonde woman. The assistant was more friendly and always found me a stool to use for searching those lost dusty corners at the bottom.

the best thing about LO Matta was the system they used for organising records. When I first arrived there and saw they put Electric Light Orchestra under the ‘Orchestras’ section with Tchaikovsky, I knew it was worth looking in every corner of every section.

Sure enough I found pearls like Fuzi 9 in the Bandas Militares section. Not so wrong in a way maybe.

I remember so clearly one day making my usual trip there after taking a guarana com mirantan next door there were no new records on the floor. I was about to leave when I stood up and saw an LP I couldn’t believe just lying on top of the ‘Cantores’ section, in full sight of everyone. It was Vox Populi. Someone crazy had pulled out this LP, looked at it and thought ‘No, this is not for me’ and left it behind. That’s how come it later came to be reissued by Whatmusic!

Gary

PS Zeca you may also remember me as “Jose Ignacio Jr” and my Avolta podcasts?

Well your site has come on so far in the last couple of years, many things I heard of but never saw before….

Congratulations!
