An exceptional date needs and exceptional album. This singer is perhaps the most celebrated at Loronix and for every Bossa Nova enthusiast. Wise of Caetano for taking this tremendous album to our tribute. Big coincidence also, since I could have made this post earlier and the chance of making it on such special date would be lost. I’m happy about this.

This is Sylvia Telles – Sylvia Telles Sings the Wonderful Songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim (1965), for Kapp Records (USA), also released in Brazil by Elenco, MEV-65 as The Music of Mr. Jobim by Sylvia Telles. Sylvia sings in Portuguese and English a repertoire of Antonio Carlos Jobim compositions, produced by Aloysio de Oliveira with Arrangements of Maestro Lindolfo Gaya. I’m just a little bit disappointed of not have a movie of Sylvia Telles available, so I’m posting a nice picture of her that you will find with the music. The cover artwork is one of those things that only Caetano Rodrigues can show us. I want to say thanks to Caetano for the amazing support given to our 48 Hours with Jobim series.

Tracks include:

01 – Useless Lasdcape (Inútil Paisagem) (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira / Vrs. R. Gilbert)
02 – Dreamer (Vivo Sonhando) (Tom Jobim / Vrs. Lees)
03 – Samba Torto (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
04 – Once I Loved (Amor Em Paz) (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes / Vrs. R. Gilbert)
05 – And Roses And Roses ( das Rosas) (Dorival Caymmi / Vrs. R. Gilbert)
06 – Eu Preciso de Você (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
07 – All That’s Left Is To Say Goodbye (Eu Preciso Dizer Adeus) (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes / Vrs. R. Gilbert)
08 – Samba de Uma Nota Só (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
09 – Quiet Nights (Corcovado) (Tom Jobim / Vrs. R. Gilbert)
10 – Bonita (Tom Jobim / Vrs. R. Gilbert)
11 – Dindi (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira / Vrs. Ray Gilbert)
12 – How Insensitive (Insensatez) (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes / Vrs. Gimbell)

You have honored Jobim in a way that does both him and you great honor. I just hope they name a river or a mountain after him because his contribution to your country’s cultural life are on that grand a scale. I know I speak for thousands when I thank you once again for sharing your love of Brazilian music with the world. Before you, names like Telles and Cardoso meant nothing. Now they rank (in my mind) with names like McRae and Christy. I owe that enrichment of my life and enlargement of my love to you.

There´s not a better way to celebrate the Tom Jobim´s 80º Aniversary than this gift you´re sending to us, Loro. My favorite songwriter sung by my favorite singer, Sylvia Telles.

Thank you very much. Long live to Loronix, the best music blog I know.

These words are really kind. Thanks a lot. Reading the writing of David Federman, I’m now convinced that all the work involved to accomplish Jobim’s tribute were really worth.

Thanks for the feedaback we could not miss 80 years of this great Musician.

Take Care,

Have been enjoying this for a while- thanks.

You’ve had a few requests for Sylvia Telles’ rare The Face I Love; I notice it is available (256kbps) at blog with backlink to Loronix, Scarpia’s Singin’ and Swingin’:
Sylvia Telles- The Face I Love (1966)

If you decide to add The Face I Love to Loronix feel free to delete this post. Otherwise, this comment can serve as a pointer to those searching for this hard to find album.

“The Face I Love” was released in Brazil in 1966 by Elenco with the title “It Might As Well Be Spring”. The two albums had different covers and the tracks were not in the same order. Dubas Música released a remixed and remastered CD version of the Elenco LP in 2004 (amazing sound), with a third different cover and carrying lots of information that were not available in the LPs. It’s still commercially available.

Brazil is very greatfull!
