When I heard this LP in the middle of 2006 I could not understand how great it was. Now Caetano comes with this album at this last package and I could finally take it the attention deserved. This is the kind of album that sounds different from everything you heard before. I don’t know what Luiz Henrique and Walter Wanderley had in terms of control, but I think this is the kind of album that can only be accomplished with freedom of doing whatever you want. Thanks Caetano for sending Popcorn to Loronixers.

This is Luiz Henrique & Walter Wanderley – Popcorn (1967), for Verve. PopCorn opens with Happy Birthday and for my surprise it is nice. The remaining tracks you will need to hear over and over again until you get the idea. Luiz Henrique is a great singer and there will be a surprise with Luiz Henrique at Loronix 1st year celebration, at least I hope. Tracks include:

Walter Wanderley
(organ, electric piano, harpsichord)
Jose Marino
James Kappes, Gary Chester and Donald Mac Donald
Melvin Tax and Romeo Penque
Luiz Henrique and Affonso de Paula

Track List

01 – Happy Birthday (Tradicional)
02 – Cabaret (J. Kander / F. Ebb)
03 – Florianópolis (Luis Henrique)
04 – Kee-ka-roo (Walter Wanderley)
05 – Diane In The Morning (Luis Henrique)
06 – Popcorn (Luis Henrique / Walter Wanderley)
07 – A Different Beat (Oscar Brown Jr. / Luis Henrique)
08 – Home On The Range (Tradicional)
09 – Blue Island (Luis Henrique / Jacqueline Sharpe)
10 – Dusty Road (Luis Henrique / Jacqueline Sharpe)

Hi Zeca,

Luiz Henrique is one of my all time
favourite Bossa artists. This album is really great. When you see titles like “Happy Birthday” and “Cabaret” you think of commercal stuff, but the arrangements of Henrique and Wanderley are so special and different. I will wait for your Henrique surprise on Loronix first year celebration (probably his first 4 track EP?)

Hi, Zeca!
Really nice music, especially Cabaret and swingigng Florianapolis!!!
I want more and more Henrique’s albums, but almost all of them are on you blog.Exept “Finding a new friend – Oscar Brown Jr. e Luiz Henrique” (Fontana/1968) and “Joy” (Reprise/1968). Do you have the first one? I can send it to you.

I’m amazed that you agree with my thoughts about this album. Thanks you.

No, it is not his first EP and it is not Luiz Henrique alone. Everybody will come to say Happy Birthday!

Cheers, zeca

Hello Zeca and Caetano,
what should I more say about Luiz Henrique – he was simple great-I remember to the great Philips live album also Caetano gave us with Luiz Henrique- I remember that on one song of this album on which Luiz sings he made the moderator to Salvadorwhen starts his piano solo “Salvador on piano”very nice and groovy scene.
Thanks Caeatno and Zeca to for the memory to this great musician.

When you first play Happy Birthday you think its going to be dire until the Happy birthday chorus ends halfway through then the track has the most killer keyboard break you could ever imagine !!!!!
Turn it up GET IT and thank Loronix
