In that spirit of gradually taking back the control, I think it is perfect to show Loronixers the legendary Trio Surdina debut LP, recorded in 1953, but decades ahead of its time if you take in comparison the music from Brazil in the Bossa Nova years. Take this album as history, such like a document if you want to understand Brazilian music from a broader perspective.

This is Trio Surdina – Trio Surdina (1953), for Musidisc, featuring the “original” Fafa Lemos, Garoto and Chiquinho do Acordeon. I wish I were on a better shape to describe this essential album, but this time you will need to realize it by yourself. A good way to start is taking a close hearing to Duas Contas (Garoto) and O Relogio da Vovo (Fafa Lemos / Garoto / Chiquinho do Acordeon), so you will understand how this album is ahead of everything made in the early 50’s. Tracks include:

Personnel

Fafa Lemos
(violin, voice)
Garoto
(violao)
Chiquinho do Acordeon
(accordion)

Track List

01 – Ternamente (J. Lawrence / W. Gross)
02 – O Relógio da Vovó (Fafá Lemos / Chiquinho do Acordeom / Garoto)
03 – Duas Contas (Garoto)
04 – Felicidade (Garoto / Haroldo Barbosa)
05 – Ninguém Me Ama (Antônio Maria / Fernando Lobo)
06 – Na Madrugada (Nilo Sergio)
07 – Nós Três (Fafá Lemos / Chiquinho do Acordeom / Garoto)
08 – Malagueña (Tradicional)

For those who do not read Portuguese, the previous post announces a Bossa Nova Festival in Rio de Janeiro, a real treat. I will be attending two days, Kiko Continentino with Mauricio Einhorn and Paulinho Trompete tribute to Durval Ferreira. If you live outside Brazil, buy your tickets or use those miles from your airline affinity program, it worth.

Let’s close today with a very early album by an important Brazilian female singer, accompanied by Terra Trio on a live presentation on Barroco nightclub, kindly made available to Loronixers by Justin from the great J Thyme…kind.

This is Maria Bethania – Recital na Boate Barroco (1968), for Odeon, featuring Terra Trio. It is amazing how Maria Bethania was already mature in her early years on this live set recorded in 1968. Bethania has the accompaniment of Terra Trio and the repertoire features songs from her brother Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Noel Rosa, Antonio Carlos Jobim and others. This is the first out of a series of Maria Bethania live albums, which are her best records; she is really amazing performing live. Tracks include:

01 – Marginália II (Gilberto Gil / Torquato Neto)
02 – Carinhoso (Pixinguinha / João de Barro) Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Você (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
03 – Último Desejo (Noel Rosa)

Gaucho e Seu Conjunto – Rio… Madrugada e Amor (1958)

Publicado em: Wednesday, July 18, 2007 by zecalouro

Hello, Good Evening! I never saw such excitement we are having yesterday with the last Luiz Eca with Bill Evans post. An anonymous friend said this tape should be released on CD and made worldwide. Perhaps today we don’t need new music since the listening pleasure of everybody is guaranteed for a long time. So far, the music was downloaded 245 times, really above the average and this counter increases every minute.

Anyway, the show must go on, so let’s start today making something that I like very much, the first post of an artist never released before at Loronix.

This is Gaucho e Seu Conjunto – Rio… Madrugada e Amor (1958), for RGE. I could not track who is Gaucho among several artists with the same name. As far as I know, Gaucho was an active accordion player that recorded more than ten albums from the 50’s to the early 60’s. This is his second LP and the first recorded for RGE. Rio… Madrugada e Amor has Gaucho his conjunto, with no identified members playing bass, piano, drums and percussion. Nice and delicious to hear album by this Brazilian accordion player. Tracks include:

01 – Maladie D’amour (H. Salvador / Lanjean)
02 – Final (Paul Misraki / B. Molar)
03 – Mienteme (A. Dominguez)
04 – You do Something To Me (Cole Porter)
05 – Que Reste T’il de nos Amours (Charles Trenet)
06 – Tudo É Ilusão (Waldir Finotti / Nelson T. Paiva)
07 – Você Passou (Nazareno de Brito / Alcyr Pires Vermelho)
08 – Maria dos Meus Pecados (Jair Amorim / Dunga)
09 – Mulatinho (Nestor Campos)
10 – Rosa do Mato (Sergio Ricardo / Geraldo Serafim)
11 – Vem Meu Amor (Rubem Gerardi / Oldemar Magalhães)
12 – Cansei de Ilusões (Tito Madi)

Luiz Eca & Bill Evans – Ao Vivo no Chiko’s Bar (1980) K7 Tape

Finally arrived. It is everything I was wondering to be. You don’t need to clean your glasses or check if your monitor is having problems, what you read is what you will hear, Luiz Eca and Bill Evans performing together at Chiko’s Bar, Rio de Janeiro, 1980.

This is Luiz Eca & Bill Evans – Ao Vivo no Chiko’s Bar (1980), for Loronix. I never heard about Bill Evans in Brazil and I have to say many thanks to JustBeto for making his K-7 tape available and Luiz Harding for the excellent remastering to digital format. The tape features an hour of music, including the guest appearance of Leny Andrade, singing Wave and some other nice things, such as Luiz Eca and Bill Evans talking to each other and some Eca improvisations using the acute keys of the piano.

JustBeto said to do not separate tracks to provide the full experience, but I decided to split the concert in 14 tracks with the whole concert. Applauses, conversations and piano improvisations are in the end of each track and the splits did not left a second of music out. Anyway, thanks JustBeto and Luiz. Some tracks were identified by the parrot in charge of this website, but I decided to take no risks making available the 14 tracks with no names.

Este disco pode ser buscado na Rádio Forma e Elenco do Martoni. O Martoni fez o trabalho de identificação das faixas a partir dos comentários. Copio abaixo do blog dele:

E o Frank-Oliver nos enviou o link do blog Jazz Station, com mais informações sobre a gravação, que em 2010 foi lançada comercialmente. Está aqui. Pelo visto, a gravação é de 1979 e não de 1980. Abaixo a contracapa do disco, que tem a listagem das músicas (clique para aumentar):

Here we go on another Caetano Rodrigues contribution, showing this time a new artist to Loronixers, which is probably a well-known artist using a fake name to record on another label bypassing his contract obligations. This mysterious artist uses the name of Bil Bell or Bil Bel varying on each album recorded. Let’s see.

This is Bil Bell – Rosa Morena | Sambas que Nao Se Esquecem (1970), for Tropicana. Tropicana is Columbia subsidiary that recorded some nice albums such as Samba 5 – Moderninho (1970) and the fantastic Bwana Trio – Bwana Trio (no date), both available at Loronix. Bil Bell is a sax player and he delivers instrumental renditions of Samba standards. Tracks include:

01 – Teleco
02 – Faceira
03 – Lá Vem a Baiana
04 – Apito no Samba
05 – Meditação
06 – Samba de Uma Nota Só
07 – Se Acaso Você Chegasse

The mighty HansVonz released a couple of days ago two new Luiz Bonfa videos at YouTube. I could not resist picking the one that I like most and show it to Loronixers. Luiz Bonfa (with a huge mustache) plays Batucada at Julie Andrews Show. The clip ends suddenly and it is a very short footage, but people like it so much that it is not a issue.

Hello, Good Evening! Loronix engineers are making extra hours today, some special posts are being prepared and I hope they make it timely. We will have really special posts today, starting with this one, which is the first album at Loronix by a truly legendary harmonica player, cousin of a Loronixer.

This is Omar Izar – Quem tem Gaita faz Sucesso (1960), for RGE. Thanks Carlos Braga, JustBeto and all the folks from Quadradinho for point this extraordinary musician. Omar Izar had an important role in the development of Brazilian harmonica playing. Carlos Braga says that Mauricio Einhorn – a true genius of harmonica and one of the top musicians ever in history – decided to play harmonica hearing Omar Izar. I’m really glad on making this post and also proud of the work made by Carlos Braga and JustBeto, which is Omar Izar cousin. Carlos Braga prepared today a piece of text showing his passion to this fantastic instrument. I’m making the beginning of his text available here and you can get the complete Carlos Braga writing inside the music or thought a series of small posts at Quadradinho. Tracks include:

Carlos Braga writing:

“Minha paixão pela harmônica-de-boca (ou gaita, ou ainda, segundo o Rildo Hora, realejo, começou lá nos anos 50. Meu pai me levou ao auditório da Rádio Nacional para assistir o EDU DA GAITA, com a orquestra do maestro RADAMES GNATALLI no programa ‘UM MILHÃO DE MELODIAS’. O homem solou simplesmente o complicadíssimo ‘VÔO DO BESOURO’ do Rimsky-Korsakow.

(…)” continued…

Track List

01 – Noite Cheia de Estrelas (Cândido das Neves “Índio”)
02 – Chora a Tua Tristeza (Oscar Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini)
03 – Theme From a Summer Place (M. Steiner)
04 – Noite Chuvosa (João Leal Brito ”Britinho” / Fernando César)
05 – Alguém Me Disse (Jair Amorim / Evaldo Gouveia)
06 – Guarda Che Luna (Malgoni / Elgos)
07 – O Menino Desce o Morro (Vera Brasil / De Rosa)
08 – Pretty Blue Eyes (Randazzo / Weinstein)
09 – I’ll Never Fall In Love Again (J. Ray)

We had wonderful posts today, the excellent Dionysio and the great surprise made by Luiz Harding showing the so far unknown personnel listing with Baden Powell, Milton Banana Trio reposting, Maestro Antonio Carlos Jobim as musical director of Para Viver um Grande Amor, based on Pobre Menina Rica play and now the great close with a double tribute album to Vinicius de Moraes, which is something that needs detailed introduction, as follows:

This is Vinicius de Moraes – Vinicius | Poesia e Cancao Vol. 1 e Vol. 2 (1966), for Forma, featuring the live recording of a tribute to Vinicius de Moraes at Teatro Municipal de Sao Paulo, December 13, 1966. This concert was a one-time event and I’m sure a once in a lifetime opportunity for those who had the chance of being there.

Vinicius de Moraes is surrounded by a constellation of artists in both volumes released by Forma, such as Carlos Lyra, Edu Lobo, Baden Powell, Ciro Monteiro, Francis Hime and Elizeth Cardoso, one of the main performers on that day, not included in this album due contractual obligations with Copacabana label. The Brazilian actors Paulo Autran and Suzana de Moraes support the event on reading Vinicius de Moraes poems.

Orquestra Sinfonica de Sao Paulo with Maestro Diogo Pacheco were in the set, delivering orchestra support throughout the set. A quartet featuring Cesar Camargo Mariano (piano), Milton Banana (drums), Azeitona (bass) and Copinha (flute) was also assembled to render this beautiful tribute to Vinicius de Moraes. Tracks include:

Para Viver um Grande Amor – OST (1983)

Link original: Para Viver um Grande Amor – OST (1983)
Publicado em: Tuesday, July 17, 2007 by zecalouro

This is the original soundtrack of a movie film based on the musical play “Pobre Menina Rica” written by Vinícius de Moraes and Carlos Lyra. For those who never had contact with the play, it tells the story of people from favelas in Rio de Janeiro occupying an empty building and establishing a new society there. Anyway, the play understanding is not a pre requisite, you can have high quality entertainment only with the soundtrack, featuring several Brazilian artists under the musical direction of Maestro Antonio Carlos Jobim.

This is Para Viver um Grande Amor – OST (1983), for Columbia, featuring Dori Caymmi (great artist and a missing piece at Loronix), Djavan, Olivia Byington, Elba Ramalho, Sergio Ricardo and Zeze Mota. Djavan is also the movie main performer, sharing this role with one of the most beautiful woman in Brazil, Patricia Pillar. Compositions by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Carlos Lyra and Chico Buarque de Hollanda with arrangements by Eduardo Souto Neto. We cannot go wrong with this great soundtrack of a great movie. Tracks include:

01 – Samba do Carioca (Vinicius de Moraes / Carlos Lyra) – Dori Caymmi
02 – Sabe Você (Vinicius de Moraes / Carlos Lyra) – Djavan
03 – Sinhazinha (Despertar) (Chico Buarque) – Zezé Motta
04 – Desejo (Djavan) – Djavan
05 – A Violeira (Tom Jobim / Chico Buarque) Elba Ramalho
06 – Imagina (Tom Jobim / Chico Buarque) – Djavan & Olivia Byington
07 – Tanta Saudade (Djavan / Chico Buarque) – Djavan
08 – A Primavera (Vinicius de Moraes / Carlos Lyra) – Olivia Byington
09 – Sinhazinha (Despedida) (Chico Buarque) – Olivia Byington

Milton Banana Trio – Milton Banana Trio (1965)

I’m reposting this album to address several requests for a better quality. Friends were right, the original vinyl transfer was not well done and this one is really improved. Actually, it is nice to see this album on top again; it is one of Milton Banana Trio albums that I like most. I will keep the original text, written in December 2006.

Hope uEnjoy!

I had a meeting downtown this morning that was very closed to some old vinyl shops. I left home to this meeting repeating a mantra in my head: “I will not go to the vinyl shops..”, “I will not go to the vinyl shops..”. However, when I left the meeting, my body was separated from my brain and such like a tractor ray or a magnet, in a matter of five minutes I found myself with dirty fingers browsing LPs.

When I put my hands on Milton Banana Trio – Milton Banana Trio (1965), for Imperial, I asked the shopkeeper if this LP was rare or not. The answer made me fell very proud, he said: “It is rare, you will not see it even in Loronix or sabadabada…”

Well, not any more, I hope he cannot remember my face in the next time. As you can see by the cover, conditions were not ideal and I had to make some extra work to clean up everything, I’m afraid if some eventual click or clack occurs. However, it is a wonderful record from an early Milton Banana and his Samba Jazz combo, which is Milton Banana (drums), Wanderley (piano) and Guara (bass). This is the later Imperial edition. Tracks include:

01 – Garota de Ipanema (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 – Primitivo (Sergio Mendes)
03 – Samba de Verão (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
04 – Primavera (Carlos Lyra / Vinicius de Moraes)
05 – Nanã (Moacir Santos / Mário Telles)
06 – Samba do Avião (Tom Jobim)
07 – Minha Saudade (João Gilberto / João Donato)
08 – Ela É Carioca (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
09 – Sambou Sambou (João Mello / João Donato)
10 – Noa Noa (Sergio Mendes)
11 – Inútil Paisagem (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
12 – Samblues (Durval Ferreira / Maurício Einhorn)

Dionysio e Seu Quinteto – Romance no Texas Bar (1959)

Publicado em: Monday, July 16, 2007 by zecalouro

Hello, Good Evening! What a great day. Loronix is receiving today several new visitors and we are really above the average. Perhaps it is the Zimbo Trio Vol. 2 effect or people coming back from the weekend and checking what is new. Anyway, I have been receiving some emails from friends asking to do not forget to make the old “Para Dancar” albums from the late 50’s. That’s why I decided to start the day in the style showing a musician that we never spoke before at Loronix.

This is Dionysio e Seu Quinteto – Romance no Texas Bar (1959), for International. Dionysio was an active sax player, being member of Maestro Zaccarias orchestra and also from the cast of TV Tupi musicians. Romance no Texas Bar is for dancing, but will fulfill the needs of friends in the mood of a very well played instrumental music with sax, bass, drums, piano and guitar. Texas Bar was a nightclub, very close to my place; perhaps Dionysio was an active musician at Texas Bar. I hope you enjoy another Brazilian artist never released before at Loronix. Tracks include:

Zimbo Trio – Zimbo Trio Vol. 2 (1965)

Publicado em: Saturday, July 21, 2007 by zecalouro

I took a time today to visit the beach facilities of Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. They made a great work on assembling an infrastructure down here; the place is clean, secure and really beautiful. However, there is an exception, the music. We should admit, in the past, the offer was really better. We did not have iPods, CDs, etc. but the music available was fantastic, take this album as an example: there was a time in Brazil that instrumental music, such as this one made by Zimbo Trio, was commercially successful.

I think this is the main reason for the average of 3,000 daily visits Loronix receives everyday. The music available here is truly amazing and this fantastic Caetano Rodrigues contribution is the perfect example.

This is Zimbo Trio – Zimbo Trio Vol. 2 (1965), for RGE, which is the second LP released by Zimbo Trio. There is no much to say about this album, a solid listen from the start until the end. Some friends even say that this one is better then their first album, the “red” one, already released at Loronix. Once again, use comments section to give feedback and also say if you feel the need to get it in looseless format. Tracks include:

Personnel

Hamilton de Godoy
(piano)
Luiz Chaves
(bass)
Rubinho Barsotti
(drums)

Track List

01 – Arrastão (Edu Lobo / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 – Balanço Zona Sul (Tito Madi)
03 – Zomba (Maria Helena Toledo / Luis Bonfá)

05 – Zimba (Tito)

07 – Samba 40 Graus (Adilson Godoy)
08 – Garota de Charme (Maria Helena Toledo / Luis Bonfá)

Tito Madi – A Fossa (1971)

Publicado em: Monday, July 16, 2007 by zecalouro

In one of those quick polls I use to make showing post alternatives to friends, the great GK said something very important, he said that Tito Madi deserves more posts at Loronix. I agree with GK, so I decided to start with what is considered Tito Madi most successful and important albums, the first out of the four of his A Fossa series, recoded respectively in 1971, 1972, 1973, and 1974 for London, which is a subsidiary of Odeon.

This is Tito Madi – A Fossa (1971), for London. For a long time, I though this “A Fossa” series was dedicated to the same A Fossa style, which is a kind of romantic Samba Cancao with influences of Boleros and American Ballads. However, Fossa is the name of a nightclub in Rio de Janeiro where Tito Madi performed several years in the 70’s. This series brings these fantastic phsychodelic covers that you cannot stop starring and finding new details. Let’s see how Loronixers feedback this release. Tracks include:

01 – Apelo (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 – Pra Dizer Adeus (Edu Lobo / Torquato Neto)
03 – Canção da Volta (Ismael Netto / Antônio Maria)
04 – Cansei de Ilusões (Tito Madi)
05 – De Onde Vens (Dori Caymmi / Nelson Motta)
06 – Chuvas de Verão (Fernando Lobo)
07 – Sonho e Saudade (Tito Madi)
08 – Esquecendo Você (Tom Jobim)
09 – Pra Você (Silvio César)
10 – Eu e a Brisa (Johnny Alf)
11 – Fiz do Amor Meu Canto (Tito Madi / William Prado)
12 – Reverso (Marino Pinto / Gilberto Milfont) Se o Tempo Entendesse (Marino Pinto / Mário Rossi) Sucedeu Assim (Tom Jobim / Marino Pinto)

The last Joao Gilberto – The Legendary Joao Gilberto (1988), featuring three albums had a tremendous response from Loronixers. I have to admit, I did not expect much of it and perhaps will be the most downloaded of this month. That’s why I decided to make this one in the same style, featuring another Bossa Nova icon, Tamba Trio, one of the most acclaimed Brazilian Trios from the 60’s.

This is Tamba Trio – Tamba Trio Classics (1997), for Polygram, featuring 28 remastered Tamba Trio songs taken from their first four albums for Philips. I could not associate each song with these first four albums, so I decided to keep the original Tamba Trio Classics order. This is for beginners and Tamba Trio aficionados. Tracks include:

02. Consolação (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
03. Garota De Ipanema (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)

Vadico – Evocacao III (1979)

Link original: Vadico – Evocacao III (1979)
Publicado em: Saturday, July 14, 2007 by zecalouro

This is a tribute to one of the most underrated and forgotten artists in Brazil. Make an exercise right now and try to answer a simple question: “Who is Vadico?” Probably, just a small group of friends would make it by heart. I’m quite sure Vadico is widely unknown outside and even inside Brazil. Vadico is the longtime composer partner of Noel Rosa, one of the most interesting composer partnerships of Brazilian popular music. Their first composition is the legendary Feitio de Oracao, created in 1932, the second was, believe me, Feitico da Vila. Since these first two masterpieces, they made together hundreds of legendary compositions. I’m sharing a tribute album to Vadico, recorded in 1979 by a constellation of Brazilian musicians.

This is Vadico – Evocacao III (1979), for Eldorado, a tribute to Vadico. In spite of his series of compositions with Noel Rosa, Vadico was also a gifted musician, playing piano and leading orchestras. Vadico had also an international experience as member of several American orchestras and as pianist of o Bando da Lua, Carmen Miranda accompaniment group, taking part in several movies in the 40’s. There is also an interesting story about Vadico, he was the first Vinicius de Moraes choice to be responsible for the soundtrack of Orfeu da Conceicao, but Vadico took a lot of time to accept the offer and Vinicius decided another name, Antonio Carlos Jobim. Tracks include:

Performers

Marcio Montarroyos
Dominguinhos
Raul de Barros
Amilton Godoy
Roberto Sion
Edu da Gaita
Heraldo do Monte

Track List

01 – Feitio de Oração (Vadico / Noel Rosa) – Márcio Montarroyos
02 – Prece (Vadico / Marino Pinto) – Dominguinhos
03 – Nego (Vadico / Marino Pinto) – Raul de Barros
04 – Choro Em Fá Menor (Vadico) – Amilton Godoy
05 – Pra Que Mentir (Vadico / Noel Rosa) – Roberto Sion
06 – Sempre a Esperar (Vadico / Vinicius de Moraes) – Raul de Barros
07 – Feitiço da Vila (Vadico / Noel Rosa) – Edu da Gaita
08 – Julgamento (Vadico / Marino Pinto) – Márcio Montarroyos
09 – Chopp (Vadico) – Amilton Godoy

This parrot needs vacation. This album was perfect to be released on our Music from All Countries celebration, but zecalouro forgot to make it. Big fault, he as two in his collection, he bought the second just to get a better cover artwork, which is really beautiful. Dilermando Reis is considered one of the best violao players in Brazil and this his first album at Loronix, a very late release to fill a missing point. Dilermando Reis has a vast discography and this is one of his first albums.

This is Dilermando Reis – A Volta ao Mundo com Dilermando Reis (1959), for Continental. This is a guitar only album with Dilermando Reis renditions of music from several countries. It is delicious to hear, Dilermando Reis has a romantic playing style, very hard to describe writing, and you should take it for a hearing. Dilermando Reis first 78rpm was released in 1941 and he recorded until two years before his passing with 61. As professor, Dilermando Reis counts as his disciples the ex-president of Brazil Juscelino Kubitschek and the renowned Bola Sete and Darci Vilaverde. Tracks include:

01 – Na Baixa do Sapateiro (BRASIL)
02 – Ausencia (PARAGUAI)
03 – La Despedida (CHILE)
04 – Milongueiro del Ayer (ARGENTINA)

Hello, Good Evening! Today we had the opening ceremony of Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian and Cariocas are giving a great support to the event. If everything running accordingly, the chances of Brazil on hosting the 2016 Olympic games increases. The ceremony has just finished and it seems everybody was watching it on TV. From the historical 160 visits per hour, our numbers dropped to just 111 visits. Anyway, the show must go on and the day starts at Loronix, starts solid with this very interesting album.

This is Leny Eversong – Leny Eversong na America do Norte (1957), for Copacabana, original released in US as Leny Eversong – Introducing Leny Eversong (1957), for Coral. This is also the first Leny Eversong 12-inch, following her first 10-inch, recently released at Loronix as A Voz de Leny Eversong (1955). This album was a jointly contribution from Daniel Vernhes and Caetano Rodrigues. Daniel sent the Coral issue and Caetano the Copacabana issue, both covers looks very similar. Leny Everson has the accompaniment of Neal Hefti, one of the top Jazz arrangers and composers of the 50’s and his Orchestra. Tracks include:

01 – I Can’t Give You Anything But Love (J. MacHugh / D. Fields)
02 – Tierra Va Templa (M. Merceron) El Cubanchero (Rafael Hernandez)

Dick Farney – Dick Farney no Waldorf (1960)

I know several fans of Dick Farney and this post is dedicated to all of them, but there is a special one, a Loronixer, that I want to mention, which is cvllos. If Dick Farney fans decide to name a leader, cvllos would be the one. I know very well the modus operandi of a fan and I’m wondering cvllos surprise in the morning when opening Loronix with this wonderful and very hard to find Dick Farney album, which is my choice for the last post today.

This is Dick Farney e Seu Trio – Dick Farney no Waldorf (1960), for Odeon. I’m only a little bit disappointed with this cover artwork, on my dreams, this cover had a beautiful photo of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in the night with lights and the name of Dick Farney on yellow. In the other hand, the music is much better than the soundtrack of my dreams with Dick Farney performing a repertoire based on the songs he played during one-year season at Waldorf Astoria, 1957. Dick Farney Trio members were not credited. Tracks include:

01 – These Foolish Things (J. Strachey)
02 – Jeepers Creepers (H. Warren / J. Mercer)
03 – Over The Rainbow (Harold Arlen / E. Y. Harburg)
04 – All Of Me (S. Simons / G. Marks)
05 – You Took Advantage Of Me (R. Rodgers / L. Hart)
06 – You Stepped Out Of a Dream (G. Kahn / N. H. Brown)
07 – Moonlight Becames You (V. Heusen / J. Burke)
08 – Lullaby Of Birdland (G. Shearing / B. Y. Forster)
09 – Waldorf Blues (Dick Farney)
10 – Não Tem Solução (Dorival Caymmi / Carlos Guinle)

Publicado em: Friday, July 13, 2007 by zecalouro

I have been showing this album to several fans of Moacyr Silva and the feedback received was good, with no exception. There is a reason for showing it to Moacyr Silva fans on this “test drive”, American Dancing Quartet is supposed to be Moacyr Silva Quartet, although personnel is not credited. This was the second question of the “test drive” and just one friend said no. Anyway, now we can make it to Loronix community, which I urge to use comments to give feedback.

This is American Dancing Quartet – My Reverie (1959), for Prestige. I think only Moacyr Silva can guarantee his participation on My Reverie, unfortunately, he passed away in 2002. My Reverie brings a repertoire with America standards, featuring a quartet based on sax tenor, bass, piano and drums. It is delicious to hear and very well played by the mysterious American Dancing Quartet. Do not let the Dancing title cheats you, this is 100% Jazz music. Tracks include:

01 – Sleepy Lagoon (J. Lawrence / E. Coates)
02 – On The Sunny Side Of The Street (D. Fields / J. McHugh)
03 – My Reverie (L. Clinton)
04 – I Cried For You (A. Freed / G. Arnheim / A. Lyman)
05 – Whispering (J. Schonberger / R. Coburn / V. Rose)
06 – Blue Moon (L. Hart / R. Rodgers)
07 – I Only Have Eyes For You (A. Dubin / H. Warren)
08 – Stardust (H. Carmichael / M. Parish)

12 – As Time Goes By (H. Hupfeld)

Joao Gilberto is one of the artists with the strongest association with Bossa Nova. His debut LP, Chega de Saudade, landmarks the birth of Bossa Nova and will make its 50th anniversary next year, 2008. Joao Gilberto is popular as it was 4 decades ago, following the same style throughout five decades. It has been a long time since the last Joao Gilberto LP was released at Loronix and I’m sure this post will end this hiatus with style. Let’s see.

This is Joao Gilberto – The Legendary Joao Gilberto (1988), for EMI-Odeon, featuring the first three Joao Gilberto LPs, Chega de Saudade (1958), O Amor o Sorriso e a Flor (1960) and Joao Gilberto (1961) plus the four tracks from EP, Orfeu do Carnaval. We are showing the 1990 World Pacific reissue, CD version. This album was recorded with no authorization by Joao Gilberto and was taken from the stores after a very short legal dispute. If you are a fan of Joao Gilberto, this should be heaven on earth, 38 tracks and more than an hour of the young Joao Gilberto at CD quality. Tracks include:

02 – Desafinado
03 – Samba de Uma Nota Só
04 – O Pato
05 – Bolinha de Papel
06 – O Amor Em Paz
07 – Trevo de 4 Folhas (I’m Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover)

Here we go on another Caetano Rodrigues contribution, actually, highly recommended by Caetano and the kind of album that should be released more often. We do not have a band here, either a main performer, perhaps I’m wrong, but this is just top-notch Brazilian musicians assembled to record instrumental renditions of Bossa Nova tunes. Let’s check why this album is Caetano’s favorite pick.

This is Instrumental Bossa Nova (1989), for Visom. The fun of this album is to hear performances of classic Bossa Nova tunes by new generation musicians using new recording technologies. Personnel is available bellow, as well tracks. Tracks include:

PersonnelMarinho Boffa
(piano)
Idrss Bodrioua
(sax alto)
Paulo Belinatti
(violao)
Paulo Braga
(bateria)with special guests

Paulo Russo
(bass)
Nico Assumpcao
(bass)

Track List

01 – Imagem
02 – O Barquinho
03 – Garota de Ipanema
04 – Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Voce
05 – Tristeza de Nos Dois
06 – Samba de Verao
07 – Wave
08 – Inutil Paisagem
09 – Terço
10 – Manha de Carnaval
11 – Triste
12 – Amor em Paz

.

Não tinha esse disco. Porém, graças aos amigos Bili e Martoni ele agora pode ser buscado na Rádio Forma e Elenco.

Hello, Good Evening! You are probably thinking that your green friend went nuts today opening this rainy Wednesday with a bolero album featuring a Chilean singer. Perhaps I’m nuts, but not for making this album available. Although it does not bring elements of the music from Brazil, this is one of those albums – such like Julie is Her Name and many others – that had a tremendous influence on Brazilian artists that created Bossa Nova as the way we know today.

This post also homage Carlos Braga, a new and already legendary Loronixer. Carlos Braga is one of the most knowledgeable Brazilian music friends at Loronix. He is responsible for this post and Caetano Rodrigues also for providing this album. Carlos Braga is providing a once in a lifetime opportunity to us writing his musical memories and connecting Loronixers at Quadradinho. He is responsible for showing us the way to this album, obscure and perhaps widely unknown, but really influential. I’m gathering from Quadradinho Carlos Braga’s words, in Portuguese. English translation is on the way. Carlos, the word is yours:

This is Lucho Gatica – Inolvidables con Lucho Gatica (1958), for Odeon. Loronixers are now invited to make the bridge between Arturo Castro guitar and Bossa Nova through this anthological Lucho Gatica album featuring Arturo Castro (guitar), Victor Ruiz Pazos (bass) and a discrete and not credited percussionist. My special thanks to Carlos Braga, Caetano Rodrigues, Geraldo Picanco (my very good friend and Loronix official tracker of Quadradinho posts) and all Loronix community. Tracks include:

01 – Noite de Ronda
02 – Tu
03 – La Borrachita
04 – Nocturnal
05 – A La Orilla de un Palmar
06 – Por que Llorar
07 – Noche
08 – Frenesi
09 – Duerme
10 – Nunca
11 – Alma Mia
12 – Dejame Llorar
13 – Verdad Amarga
14 – Arrullo
