Although not a Tropicalia album, this is the grand close of three Tropicalia releases at Loronix, started with Nara Leao – Nara Leao (1968), a awesome AdHoc contribution, immediately followed by a essential Tropicalia album recorded by Gal Costa, Gal Costa – Gal Costa (1969) and now one of Caetano Veloso masterpieces, Caetano Veloso – Caetano Veloso (1969). Three solid self-titled listens with something in common, three Philips releases, three self-titled albums and Caetano Veloso compositions spread throughout the 36 tracks released. This is another contribution by Dona Iara, and it seems to me that she never heard her albums, the media is clean as never took out of envelop in all these years. Let’s see.

This is Caetano Veloso – Caetano Veloso (1969), for Philips, also known as Caetano Veloso “White Album”, really inspired by The Beatles – White Album, a great Caetano Veloso reference in all his discography. It is amazing to think this is Caetano Veloso second album, this music sounds fresh and some tracks are quite revolutionary. I have been wondering what direction Caetano Veloso would follow if not taken from Brazil to exile in London, just after recording this essential record. Anyway, Maestro Rogerio Duprat delivers arrangements and also plays the role of musical director and for our pleasure; Philips gives complete personnel listing this time. Tracks include:

Rogerio Duprat
(arrangements, musical direction)
Gilberto Gil
Sergio Barroso
Wilson das Neves
Chiquinho de Moraes
(piano, organ)
Tiao Motorista

Track List

01 – Irene (Caetano Veloso)
02 – The Empty Boat (Caetano Veloso)
03 – Marinheiro Só (Tradicional / Adpt. Caetano Veloso)
04 – Lost In The Paradise (Caetano Veloso)
05 – Atrás do Trio Elétrico (Caetano Veloso)
06 – Os Argonautas (Caetano Veloso)

Em primeiro lugar, parabéns e obrigado pelo Loronix!
Em segundo, os arquivos FLAC estão disponíveis nas partes A, B… e A de novo?!? Cadê a parte C?

i would say this *is* a tropicália album, maybe the last of them. the album has the mixtures of different genres from around the world (samba, bossa, tango, rock, fado), just like the tropicalistas intended. also, it was produced by rogério duprat, the tropicália maestro, and it was the last studio effort (he recorded the gil & caetano live album later the same year) by caetano before going to london, where he changed his musical direction, and which, in my opinion, defines the end of tropicália (although caetano’s 1972’s araçá azul might be considered tropicalista too). anyways, this is one of the best (if not the best) caetano veloso albums ever.

It is wonderful to have this in Flac form, but there seems a problem with the tracks. Carolina ##7 includes also Cambalache. And the tracks seem out of order after that. This music is gold, but maybe the ingots have not been cast right.

Zeca, this seems to be mono. Both the original CD and the 2002 remix are in stereo, so I assume there was a stereo version in vinyl as well. It’s interesting hearing it this way — probably the way many people originally experienced it — but the stereo is much clearer and cleaner, in my opinion. Whatever. It’d be a great album even if they pressed it on cardboard.
