Arrigo Barnabe - Facanhas (1992)

If you are in the mood to listen and get thrilled with something unique and very different from the music usually released at Loronix, this is the album you were looking for, courtesy of AdHoc, a great zecalouro’s friend that really rocks with surprising releases. It seems AdHoc reads my mind sometimes, I have been considering to show something from Arrigo Barnabe for months. There is a lot to explain about Arrigo Barnabe, a very important artist to my background as amateur musician since 1980 when I got paralyzed with Arrigo Barnabe first LP, Clara Crocodilo, a revolutionary album that according with feedback on Facanhas should be released very soon at Loronix. Let’s see.

This is Arrigo Barnabe – Facanhas (1992), for Camerati, featuring Arrigo Barnabe, the founder and most influential artist from Vanguarda Paulistana movement, a group of classically educated musicians from the city of Sao Paulo who blends classical influences to popular music. I spoke about the influence of Clara Crocodilo, a sort of opera rock album with lots of instruments in the set and Facanhas is just the opposite with Arrigo Barnabe at the piano, backed by a small group. AdHoc wisely defines Facanhas as an UFO, traveling across several periods of Brazilian music, from Jovem Guarda to Samba, modinhas, MPB, etc. I would be pleased if Loronixers use comments section to feedback this release. Tracks include:

Arrigo Barnabe
(piano, voice)
Paulo Braga
Mane Silveira
(alto, soprano sax)
Claudio Lucci
Pericles Cavalcanti
(violao, voice at 10 – Bom Sujeito)

Track List

I agree, this record is great. The music and arrangements are wonderful, the voice is often very different from what one could expect from brasilian music, at times it made me think of tango.

I will listen to this record again now, looking forward to their first release, thank you!!!

By the way, any chance to see Bardem and Vinicious “Os Afro Sambas” here in Loronix?

Clara Crocodilo on a very good condition… Good. You meant the original first Brazilian 1980 issue? Vinyl?

Cheers, zeca

yeah – the 1980 vinil. I don’t even have a pickup anymore, but I couldn’t get the courage to give it up until now. May be I was just waiting for an opportunity like this.

I’m at gmail. you could find me as dudacgf.

This is very different than I was expecting. Most of the songs are very gentle and quiet, with just a few more avant garde moments. Theo, there’s only one tango here (thankfully). Arrigo has also done a lot of movie music. I love his soundtrack for a hilarious film called Ed Mort — there’s a great song spoofing TV kids’ entertainers in the mould of Xuxa.

By the way, this was the latest Loronix MP3 file to freeze my SanDisk portable MP3 player. And I just discovered that I can’t move the songs into iTunes, either. Why do these files behave so oddly?

Let’s address this issue on your system, pawlyshyn. Did you try to convert a FLAC file from Loronix using your own resources? I don’t know how to convert from FLAC to MP3s on a MacIntosh, but I know a good application (freeware) to convert Loronix MP3s on your Mac. Follow this link to download and try to convert the Loronix MP3s to equivalent and please tell me what you get.

Cheers, zeca

Let me try on some possibilities:
1. Some of mp3 files from Loronix get somehow corrupted while transferred to zip or uploaded to rapidshare. You can see that clearly with a tiny little proggie called mp3ext (works on PC). This proggie gives you a clear view of the bitrate of the file you have on Windows Explorer.
2. If the file is corrupted you won’t see the bitrate readable. What you have to do in this case is to use another little free proggie called MP3 Repair Tool that clears the tags of the files and cleans it to you.
3. Another possibility is that some sign in Portuguese language won’t work nice on some audio devices or aren’t even recognizable on some systems. Though Zeca tries to clear those signs may be some have slipped. I don’t know on Arrigo’s album. I didn’t get it yet.
4. Try to get the files on Flac, eliminate the Portuguese signs (~, ^, ´ and so on) and convert the files to mp3 with something that works on your MAC system.
I hope I may have helped a bit.

Arrigo Barnabe e Banda Sabor de Veneno – Clara Crocodilo (1980) | Órfãos do Loronix

[…] the weird story behind it. The idea of making Arrigo Barnabe debut LP came from the last and first Arrigo Barnabe album at Loronix, Facanhas, kindly sent by Ad Hoc. I said to AdHoc that I had this album and it was only a matter of waiting a […]
