Chega de Saudade - Compilação 50 Anos da Bossa Nova 02

Exactly 50 years ago, precisely at 10 July 1958, Joao Gilberto started the studio session to record the landmark Bossa Nova album Chega de Saudade. This image was created with 26 albums covers with something in common, which one has a different rendition of Chega de Saudade. This is a really nice compilation assembled by Martoni on his homage to Bossa Nova 50th Anniversary, available on his website, following this link.

MARIA CREUZA-POÉTICO 1982 Capa

I believe that many friends will not understand why the back cover has the spotlight instead of the front cover with Maria Creuza photo. There is a special reason, Vinicius de Moraes, who left this planet on July 09, 2008, exactly 28 years ago. It has been twenty-eight years without Vinicius de Moraes. I remember the day of his passing as it was yesterday. Vinicius de Moraes lives through his work and should live for many decades; he is one of the most important Brazilian popular music artists. Let’s see.

This is Maria Creuza – Poetico (1982), for RCA, a tribute to Vinicius de Moraes, featuring only Vinicius de Moraes compositions, performed by Maria Creuza, a singer strongly influenced by Vinicius de Moraes, with several albums released with Vinicius, including the legendary live performances available on recording, such as “La Fusa”, recorded in Argentina. Hello, good evening! This is the album were the last challenge with Jorge Ben and Copa Trio was taken, by the way, another mom’s contribution. I was not thinking about showing at Loronix, but when I took it again today to scan a page, I could see that two tracks are Jorge Ben backed by J.T. Meirelles e Os Copa 5 and a strange force moved my body towards the turntable for a spin. Thanks to the Loronix friend that asked for the second page scan, it is included. Let’s see.

This is Jorge Ben – Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira Nr. 8 (1970), for Abril Cultural, featuring Jorge Ben selected cuts performed by Jorge Ben, J.T. Hello, good evening! Here we go on another contribution sent by my mother, strongly recommended by her. She also asked to release it in the beginning of this series and then alternate between Jorge Mello and her contributions. I think it is time to give Loronix control to her. Just kidding, it is a nice idea.

She is a big fan of Toquinho and Vinicius de Moraes, with some DVDs that she uses to spin very frequently, but mom said she got a little bit disappointed with this one, just for being an instrumental album, no lyrics and no singing. In the other hand, I’m really amazed with this one. Toquinho is mostly known as a singer and composer, but he is also a great instrumentalist, one of Paulinho Nogueira disciples. By the way, Toquinho has another instrumental only release at Loronix that you should not miss, here. Let’s see.

This is Toquinho – O Violao do Toquinho (1966), for RGE, featuring Toquinho violão accompanied by an unusual formation with drums, flute and organ played by Ely Arcoverde. I wish everybody a very productive and prosperous week. Tracks include:

Caetano Veloso & Fagner - Disco De Bolso

I think that everybody remember when Loronix released a single with Antonio Carlos Jobim performing a very, let’s say, primitive Aguas de Marco. That album was the first release of a new magazine called Disco de Bolso, featuring a single with a well-now artist and a new artist on side B. The concept was excellent, but for reasons that I could not check, the magazine did not survive to the second edition, which is exactly what we have here, kindly sent by my Mother. Let’s see.

This is Disco de Bolso do Pasquim Numero 2 – Caetano Veloso e Fagner (1972), for Zen, featuring on side A Caetano Veloso, performing A Volta da Asa Branca, recorded live at Teatro Joao Caetano, Rio de Janeiro. Side B brings the new artist, Fagner, performing Mucuripe (Belchior / Fagner). Caetano Veloso does not have a support group, only his violao, while Fagner plays violao and is backed by Ivan Lins, playing organ. It is sad to know this magazine had such a short life. Both new artists (remember the first had Joao Bosco on side B) are now respected artists in Brazil. Tracks include:

01 – A Volta da Asa Branca (Luiz Gonzaga) with Caetano Veloso
02 – Mucuripe (Fagner / Belchior) with Fagner

Hello, good evening! My mother challenges Loronix’s friends with this really nice photo. She also demands an award for the winner. This is the reason that a Rapidshare 1-Month Premium account will be the reward to the first friend who identifies correctly the information below, as follows:

A) The name of the artist playing violao.
B) The name of each other three artists playing drums, bass and piano.
C) The name of the group they belong to.

It is very easy and the first to write a comment with the correct answer to A, B and C wins a Rapidshare 1-Month Premium account. You can get a full version here.

Hello, good evening! I made a small surgery on my left feet this week and this is the reason why Loronix was not updated as usual. Additionally, my mother came to give assistance and make things more complicated as never with several recommendations, lots of things to eat and those really annoying mom’s questions about life that makes we feel really embarrassed.

Among the ups and downs of mom’s visit there is something really good, she is back to contributions and I want to start her small package with the one that we like most, which is the first LP recorded by the Brazilian bandolim virtuoso Deo Rian. Let’s see.

This is Deo Rian – Ernesto Nazareth, Solista: Deo Rian (1970), for RCA Vitor, featuring wonderful renditions of Ernesto Nazareth music played by Deo Rian bandolim with the accompaniment of Quinteto Villa Lobos, Dino 7 Cordas, Canhoto and a not credited strings quartet. This is a magnificent album, not only for the choro fans, but for everyone in the mood of listening Ernesto Nazareth beautiful melodies with really creative arrangements made by a not credited artist.

The back cover brings Deo Rian autography, dedicating this album to Sergio Bittencourt, which is Jacob do Bandolim son. My mother demands that I keep this album available to Deo Rian due this writing at the back cover, which is something that I totally agree. It will be a great pleasure to give this album to Deo Rian as a present from Loronix. Tracks include:

Hello, good evening! This is the first out of a series of albums recorded by Jaime Alem and Nair Candia for CID, under a series named “Talento Brasileiro”. I think the first who spoke with me about this series was the might Mr. D&C, a long time ago. I confess that with no help from my friends I could never take these albums in consideration. The main performers are not credited at the front cover and it is necessary to go across the back cover to realize this is a career album of Jaime & Nair, which I did not know before taking this album. Jaime & Nair albums are sought after by many collectors, especially outside of Brazil. It is time to check what they have to offer. Let’s see.

This is Jaime Alem & Nair Candia – Serie Talento Brasileiro 4 – As Musicas de Tom Jobim (1978), for CID, featuring a repertoire of Antonio Carlos Jobim tunes. As Musicas de Tom Jobim work very nice as a perfect counterpoint to previous Loronix releases, mostly instrumentals. Jaime Alem is in charge of arrangements and Nair Candia for voice, delivered here by a chorus. It will be really important if you leave your feedback on this release, Jaime & Nair recorded other albums for CID in the same concept featuring tunes by Milton Nascimento, Chico Buarque and probably additional ones, not yet identified. Tracks include:

Personnel

Jaime Alem

Tamba Trio - 20 Anos De Sucesso-Back

Hello, good evening! Do not let the appearance cheats you such like I was when I saw this album for the first time. 20 Anos de Sucesso celebrates the 20th anniversary of one of the coolest Bossa Nova trios from the 60’s, Tamba Trio. What seems to be just a collection of Tamba Trio’s best tracks is in fact a career album featuring Luiz Eca, Bebeto and Helcio Milito revisiting previous released tracks and some never released before. In summary, Tamba Trio went to studio in 1982 to record 20 Anos de Sucesso, which is nice enough to make the day of Tamba Trio fans and casual listeners. Once again, I would like to thank Jorge Mello for another awesome finding. Let’s see.

This is Tamba Trio – 20 Anos de Sucessos (1982), for RCA Victor, celebrating Tamba Trio 20th anniversary, being the last Tamba Trio career LP. This is really unbelievable. Asa Branca and Lamento Negro were recorded live at Sonda 1999 night club, which is a place I never heard before, while the others were recorded in studio. I don’t want to bore you longer, stay with Tamba Trio and don’t forget to say “Thank You” to Jorge Mello on comments section for another great contribution. Tracks include:

TAMBA TRIO

Luiz Eca
(voice, piano)
Bebeto
(voice, flute, bass, alto sax)
Helcio Milito
(voice, drums, tamba)

Track List

01 – O Samba da Minha Terra (Dorival Caymmi)
02 – Só Danço Samba (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
03 – Asa Branca (Luis Gonzaga / Humberto Teixeira)
04 – Sonda 1999 (Luiz Eça / Hélcio Milito / Adalberto)
05 – Três Horas da Manhã (Ivan Lins / Waldemar Correia)
06 – Mas Que Nada (Jorge Ben)
07 – Me Deixa Em Paz (Monsueto / Airton Amorim)
08 – Mestre Bimba (Luiz Eça / Hélcio Milito / Adalberto)
09 – Lamento Negro (Humberto Porto / Constantino Silva “Secundino”)

Hello, good evening! We have today a celebration to a very special day, the anniversary of Garoto, Anibal Augusto Sardinha, which would complete 93 years today if had not passed so prematurely with the age of 39. This is an important date that may have been noticed by a very small number of Brazilians, among them Jorge Mello, who kindly makes available to us an important album featuring Garoto recordings retrieved from Radio Nacional acetates.

Additionally, Jorge Mello sent us a article written for the occasion, describing this album, the importance of Garoto to Brazilian music and a very important item taken from his personal collection, a page of Garoto diary, written by Garoto on the day of his 39th anniversary, the last birthday he had the chance to celebrate.

Thanks Jorge Mello for your kind words for Garoto. A translation to English is being provided as soon as possible.

Jorge Mello

11 – Chinatown, my Chinatown, gravado em 12/07/1944.

Antonio Carlos Barbosa Lima - Concerto De Violão

Antonio Carlos Barbosa Lima - Concerto De Violão_2

Hello, good evening! I had a really busy day today. I worked without interruption throughout the day in meetings away from home and made a lot of things in my modest home office. It is interesting how things change over a single day. I had very difficult moments where I thought everything was lost. But from the beginning of the night, things changed for better and I can say I had a great day as a whole.

I arrived at home exhausted, spoke a bit with the zecalouro and listen with him this album recorded by Antonio Carlos Barbosa Lima, better known as Carlos Barbosa Lima, another privileged Brazilian violao player. Carlos Barbosa Lima began his studies at 7 years of age and formal education with the Uruguayan master Isaias Savio. He recorded his first album with only 12 years old, already available here at Loronix. This is the third album recorded by Carlos Barbosa Lima, with 15, another fine release sponsored by Jorge Mello. Let’s see.

This is Antonio Calos Barbosa Lima – Concerto de Violao (1959), for Chantecler. Despite having only 15 years old, Concerto de Violao is a classic guitar album recorded by a veteran. Carlos Barbosa Lima became a respected musician, making a transparent connection between classical and popular, spreading the works of important Brazilian musicians, such like Joao Pernambuco, Francisco Mignone, Catullo, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and many others. I hope this album brings much peace, as brought to me. Tracks include:

01 – Suite em Re Menor “Preludio, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Gavotte Menuet 1 y 2, Borree Giga” (Robert de Visee)
02 – Gavota (da suite Nr. 6 para violaocello) J. Sebastian Bach – version Carlos Barbosa Lima
03 – Preludio Nr. 1 da Serie “Suite a Antiga” (G. Santorsola)
04 – Dolor (Preludio Vasco) Padre San Sebastian
05 – Sevilla (I. Albeniz) version Llobet
06 – Valsa Venezuelana (A. Lauro)
07 – Valsa Choro (Camargo Guarnieri)
08 – Estudo Nr. 7 (Villa Lobos)
09 – Brasiliana Nr. 4 (Theodoro Nogueira)
10 – Sonha Yaya (Isaias Savio)

Bola Sete - Carnival in Rio (Bola Sete Em HI-Fi - Sinter)_2

Hello, good evening! This is another fantastic contribution by Jorge Mello, featuring Bola Sete with a pretty obscure album. My searches were not successful tracking down this record. I’ve been at many discographies websites and even at Bola Sete official website. I even made a challenge at Loronix to get some information about Bola Sete and this group and could not gather additional info.

In a first sight, this lady seems to be Dolores Duran, but she isn’t Dolores Duran. She is credited as Therezinha Bittencourt, which is a singer that I never heard about and could not find a single mention on my searches. I’m afraid this is an unknown Bola Sete album for many. Let’s see.

This is Bola Sete, su Conjunto Tipico Brasilero y su Cantante Therezinha Bittencourt – Carnival in Rio (1958), for Puchito, which is a Spanish record company. The back cover brings a short description of Bola Sete early years with his Conjunto and says that Carnival in Rio was recorded in Spain, during Bola Sete European tour. The back cover also brings a “footnote” confirming Carnival in Rio was recorded in Spain, which is something that you can check at the slider below, followed by my translation to English from back cover liner notes. I would like to thanks Jorge Mello for another amazing album. Tracks include:

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Bola Sete showed his artistic skills since early childhood at the age of 7 years playing guitar, whose talent he inherited from his parents.

Bola Sete is very popular in Brazil. Just as throughout Europe and South America. It is exclusive artist of Radio Nacional in Rio de Janeiro. About three years ago, he organized a group, which is composed of Brazilians, and went into great artistic tour around the country. His first contract was at the Film Festival of Punta del Este, then in theaters in Buenos Aires, Radio Belgrano Sunset Club, where he was acclaimed for his great artistic talent. Then in Chile performed at the Waldorf; Grill in Peru in Bolivia, and throughout South America, achieving many laurels. Then they were touring Europe for artistic, and in Madrid have acted with great success in Parilla Rex. It was here where Montilla hired him to record the selections so ably interpreted in this album.

01 – Sonador
02 – Chiquito
03 – Caravana
04 – Coco Baturite
05 – Nina Brazanan
06 – Baile O Coco
07 – Uno a Cero
08 – Canta Maria
09 – Mulher Rendeira
10 – Imperio de Samba
11 – Samba no Perroquet
12 – Nino Grande

Update: Jorge Mello sent this great Bola Sete interview, available below. New findings about this mysterious album will be posted tonight. Stay tuned.

1985ElzaSoaresSomosTodosIguais

Hello, good evening! This is one of the most requested albums by Elza Soares since the beginning of Loronix. The reason is quite simple; approximately the whole Elza Soares discography was reissued on CD in 2002, covering all albums recorded by Elza Soares for Odeon between 1960 and 1988. Everything was released on a single box set featuring 12 CDs, containing 22 LPs. This stupid parrot did not get one, now out of print. Two albums were left outside this box set, Elza Negra Elza (1980), already available at Loronix and Somos Todos Iguais (1985), which is this one we will have the chance to know right now, a sought after album and perhaps the only Elza Soares career album never released on CD. Let’s see.

This is Elza Soares – Somos Todos Iguais (1985), for Som Livre. Little I know about this album, considered an above the average Elza Soares release. I read several things today about this record and several sources says that Caetano Veloso and Lobao are in charge of production, which is something that needs to be confirmed since they are not credited here, and Caetano Veloso only appears as special guest on track 09 – Sophisticated Lady (Duke Ellington). Musicians were not credited by Som Livre, except the arranger, Glaucus Xavier. Tracks include:

01 – Osso Pele e Pano (Jorge Aragão)
02 – Mais Uma Vez (Carlos Dafé / Lourenço)
03 – Da Fuga Fez Sua Verdade (Sombrinha / Sereno / Adilson)
04 – Cacatua (Ronaldo Barcellos)
05 – Daquele Amor Nem Me Fale (João Donato / Martinho da Vila)
06 – Heróis da Liberdade (Mano Décio da Viola / Silas de Oliveira)
07 – Somos Todos Iguais (Elza Soares)
08 – Antes do Sol (Ronaldo Barcellos / Pi)
09 – Sophisticated Lady (Duke Ellington / Vrs. Augusto de Campos) with Caetano Veloso
10 – Exagero (Elza Soares / Glaucus Xavier)
11 – Milagres (Cazuza / Roberto Frejat)

Johnny Alf - Olhos Negros

Johnny Alf - Olhos Negros_2

Hello, good evening! I have good news to tell you. Johnny Alf, after a long period of serious health problems, takes over his activities and even made rehearsals with his quintet, just a month before his 79th anniversary. I read this new today with a great pleasure. Although very underestimated, Johnny Alf is a very important musician. He introduced a new way of singing and playing many years before the creation of Bossa Nova, influencing artists such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Marcos Valle, Carlos Lyra among many others. This is Loronix homage to this great musician. Let’s see.

This is Johnny Alf – Olhos Negros (1990), for RCA, featuring Johnny Alf music and Johnny Alf singing and playing piano in all tracks. Olhos Negros was recorded after a long hiatus of 10 years and it is a beautiful celebration of Johnny Alf music. Each track has a special guest, performing with Johnny Alf on duets. It was very hard to decide Loronix Preview Center track and I decided to deliver the opening track with Johnny Alf and Gal Costa performing Ilusao a Toa. Tracks include:

The Special Guests

Jacob Do Bandolim - Chorinhos E Choroes

I believe it is time to make a special thank to Jorge Mello for making his collection available to our community. This is a Jacob do Bandolim career album that I never had the chance to hear. Recorded in 1961, Chorinhos e Choroes brings for the first time the musicians that would lead to Conjunto Epoca de Ouro, including the acclaimed Dino 7 Cordas and Cezar Faria. Let’s see.

This is Jacob do Bandolim – Chorinhos e Choroes (1961), for RCA Victor, if you are in the mood to listen to classic tunes by Pixinguinha, Luiz Americano, Ernesto Nazareth and Zequinha de Abreu performed by an exceptional group of musicians, this is the album you were waiting for. Jacob do Bandolim delivers some of his greatest renditions here. My highlight goes to Ameno Reseda, Os Cinco Companheiros, Proezas de Solon and Assanhado, which is the one selected to Loronix Preview Center. Tracks include:

Gadê E Walfrido Silva - Gafieira

Hello, good evening! I have been learning several things since Loronix has started. Actually, every day I learn a new thing with the community or with the albums made available here. There is another thing that I find out, which is to never underestimate an album, whatever it is, no matter who are the performers, even if you never heard about them.

This album is a perfect example, found in a state of abandonment in an old vinyl shop, sold for a ridiculous price two months ago. Since then, information about Gade and Walfrido Silva came up to me easily, and I feel a little guilty of not having now these guys before. Let’s see.

This is Gade & Waldrido Silva – Gafieira (1956), for Musidisc, featuring the Gade (piano) and Walfrido Silva (drums), performing Gade and Walfrido Silva compositions. I can’t remember such unusual formation on recording, only piano and drums. Together with Luciano Perrone, Walfrido Silva is considered one of the pioneers of modern drumming in Brazilian music. Oscar Bolao gave an interview to Brasileirinho saying that Walfrido Silva plays with hands only, which is something you can easily realize with Gafieira. This cover artwork is truly amazing, but the artist was not credited by Musidisc. Tracks include:

01 – Na Cadencia do Tambor (Gade / Walfrido Silva)
02 – Vou Casar no Uruguai (Gade / Walfrido Silva)
03 – 100 Anos de Perdao (Gade / Walfrido Silva)
04 – Tudo Agora e Sonho (Gade / Walfrido Silva)
05 – Vai Cavar a Nota (Gade / Walfrido Silva)
06 – O Feitico Virou (Gade / Walfrido Silva)
07 – Perdi a Aposta (Gade / Walfrido Silva)
08 – Meu Consolo (Gade / Walfrido Silva)

Hello, good evening! Waltel Branco is one of the most important Brazilian musicians. And this is not my hypothesis; it is consensus among experts, researchers and specialized journalists. If you search Loronix for Waltel Branco, will be very easy to understand what I’m saying. Waltel Branco was the arranger of essential albums such like Joao Gilberto – Chega de Saudade (1958) and Mancini Tambem e Samba. I want to thank Jorge Mello for another fantastic contribution to Loronix. Let’s see.

This is Waltel Branco – Recital (1976), for Som Livre, featuring a repertoire that blends Classical and Popular music, with Waltel Branco compositions and adaptations. I found good information about Waltel Branco and I want to make something different showing a Luis Nassif writing from his Luis Nassif Online, one of the most important blogs in Brazil and recently awarded as the best Brazilian politics blog by Premio iBest. Congratulations Luis Nassif and thanks for writing this wonderful article about Waltel Branco. Tracks are included below Luis Nassif writing.

01 – Bachiana Nº 5 (Villa-Lobos)
02 – Ponteio (Waltel Branco)
03 – Brasil (Waltel Branco) Andante / Moderato / Presto
04 – Argamassa (Waltel Branco)
05 – Estudo Nº 1 (Francisco Tárrega) adapt. Waltel Branco
06 – Dolor (Francisco Tárrega) adapt. Waltel Branco
07 – Siciliana (Maria Thereza Paradis) adapt. Waltel Branco
08 – Diferenca sobre Guarda-me las Vacas (Luiz de Navais)
09 – Estudo Nº 2 (Radamés Gnattali)
10 – Ballet (Gluck) adapt. Waltel Branco
11 – Minueto (Johann Sebastian Bach) adapt. Waltel Branco

Elizeth Cardoso - Grandes Momentos Com Elizeth Cardoso

It is surprising that we still have Elizeth Cardoso albums not yet shown at Loronix and also out of print. This album was kept on “waiting position” for a long time; I thought it was only a compilation of her best songs released in the 78 RPM format. I decided to compare these recordings with their respective 78rpm releases and could easily understand that Grandes Momentos com Elizeth Cardoso is a career album with new recordings of her major success in 78s. Once again, Elizeth Cardoso delivers a lovely record featuring the artistic direction of Moacyr Silva, who also puts his tenor sax to play. When Elizeth Cardoso and Moacyr Silva work together it is a failure proof mission. Let’s see.

This is Elizeth Cardoso – Grandes Momentos com Elizeth Cardoso (1962), for Copacabana, featuring new recording of very old Elizeth Cardoso cuts. I think you will feel uncomfortable as I was reading “ELIZETE” instead of “ELIZETH” as we are used. This is not an error; Elizeth Cardoso only adopted the “TH” in 1966. Copacabana did not credit musicians in this session. Tracks include:

01 – Canção de Amor (Chocolate / Elano de Paula)
02 – Caixa Postal Zero Zero (Oscar Bellandi / Luis de França)
03 – Subúrbio (Luis Antônio)
04 – O Amor É Uma Canção (José Maria de Abreu / Jair Amorim)
05 – Se Eu Pudesse (José Maria de Abreu / Jair Amorim)
06 – Dá-me Tuas Mãos (Erasmo Silva / Jorge de Castro)
07 – Graças a Deus (Carioca)
08 – Nunca É Tarde (João Pinto)
09 – Venho de Longe (Dermeval Fonseca / Alberto Ribeiro)
10 – Seresteiro (Zé Keti / Renato Lima / Tufic Lauar)

Sílvio Caldas & Ary Barroso - Ary Barroso, Canta Silvio Caldas

Hello, good evening! zecalouro is a big fan of singers with potent voices, such like Francisco Alves and Angela Maria. He goes nuts with opera, especially when played loud. I decided to change his “playlist” today with this album, having in mind the potent voice of Silvio Caldas. My parrot did not like it very much, but I had a great entertainment listening to Ary Barroso music with Silvio Caldas interpretation. Silvio Caldas is a great singer; he has a perfect diction, really incredible. I could understand every single word of Ary Barroso lyrics performed by Silvio Caldas. This is a very old album released in 1953 and these songs seem to be composed only a decade ago, they are fresh and beautiful. Ary Barroso music did not decay across time. Let’s see.

This is Ary Barroso com Silvio Caldas – Musica de Ary Barroso, Canta Silvio Caldas (1953), for Radio, featuring eight Ary Barroso songs performed by Silvio Caldas. Little I known about this album, but I have the insight that Ary Barroso participates with his unmistakable piano, delivering groovy Samba in some tracks. I think you should give a try to this album, just to understand that Brazilian music did not started with Bossa Nova and was attractive many years before the movement. Tracks include:

01 – No Rancho Fundo (Ary Barroso / Lamartine Babo)
02 – Morena Boca de Ouro (Ary Barroso)
03 – Três Lágrimas (Ary Barroso)
04 – Faceira (Ary Barroso)
05 – Terra Seca (Ary Barroso)

Marisa Gata Mansa & Moacyr Silva - Convite a Musica

Hello, good evening! This was the third night that I try to make a fantastic contribution by Jorge Mello, and in the last minute I realize a missing information or a new detail that needs to be added and the plan is postponed to the next day. It is an important post featuring one of the artists that Jorge Mello most admires and everything should work with no mistakes. Anyway, I believe tomorrow is the big day.

Meanwhile, we will stay in good company with a mandatory update featuring an artist that certainly defines Loronix, Moacyr Silva, accompanying a singer appreciated by many friends, Marisa, on her debut LP for Copacabana label in 1958. Let’s see.

This is Marisa e Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto – Convite a Musica (1958), for Copacabana, Marisa debut LP, backed by Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto in all tracks. I said that Moacyr Silva defines Loronix for many reasons. Moacyr Silva is a gifted musician with a very important contribution to Brazilian music as producer of several albums. And since Loronix creation in 2006, I never had the chance to see one of Moacyr Silva career records available on CD. I would be very pleased to see Moacyr Silva reissued one day. Tracks include:

Ed Maciel - Volume 5

Hello, good evening! Since Monday, Loronix has a new back-end application that counts with a very cool feature. This new tool gathers information about the search terms typed at Google that generates a referral to Loronix, providing nice reports about the most common search terms divided by country, continent and even cities.

This is a really important tool. Now I can create reports ranking the most common search terms, really nice to understand what people are looking for. I’m proud that the terms “Loronix” and “zeca louro” are on top of the ranking, followed by renowned artists such like Antonio Carlos Jobim and Baden Powell. In the other hand, this tool shows that many friends really don’t know how to make an efficient use of Google. Several queries are made like questions to Google instead of search terms. It is common to find terms with questions, such like: “I want to read about bossa nova.”, for instance. Another top ranked term is “Duran Duran”, probably made by people looking for information about the rock group Duran Duran arriving here to find Dolores Duran.

Anyway, so far, the great surprise was the trombonist, conductor, arranger and composer Ed Maciel being requested by many people, especially aboard. This post comes in response to this demand for Maestro Ed Maciel music. Let’s see.

This is Ed Maciel –Volume 5 (1968), for London, the fifth out of the eleven albums recorded by Ed Maciel and his orchestra, which are mainly music for dance, very similar to the albums released by Maestro Erlon Chaves’ Banda Veneno Internacional in the same period. Ed Maciel was a very important musician with participation on several important Brazilian instrumental music albums, such like the one released by Os Sete de Ouros, Os Gatos, Moacir Santos’ Coisas, Joao Gilberto’s Chega de Saudade, among many others. Tracks include:

01 – Hey Jude (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
02 – When I Was Five (Bernstein / Millrose)
03 – Light My Fire (Morrison / Manzarek / Krieger / Densmore)
04 – This Crazy World (Paul Anka)
05 – Do You Know The Way To San José (Burt Bacharach / H. David)
06 – Ed Maciel Tema (José Orlando / Benil Santos)
07 – Those Were The Days (Raskin)
08 – Hold Me Tight (J. Nasch)
09 – Don’t Give Up (T. Hatch / J. Trent)

Beth Carvalho - Canto Por Um Novo Dia

Hello, good evening! Last week I found this early album recorded by one of the most important Brazilian Samba interpreters, Beth Carvalho, a requested artist at Loronix and one of our missing pieces with only one album released. This album was scheduled for the last Saturday, but I was so tired and felt asleep soon on that day. Anyway, I cannot wait until Saturday, and I hope you understand this extraordinary “Samba Monday”. Let’s see.

This is Beth Carvalho – Canto para um Novo Dia (1973), for Tapecar, Beth Carvalho second career LP and the first and only album recorded for Tapecar. By the way, the tiny and important Tapecar label delivers a lot of resources to Beth Carvalho, nice cover artworks with several pictures inside and a cast of best of breed Brazilian musicians, including arrangements by Cesar Camargo Mariano and participation of legends such like Nelson Cavaquinho, Geraldo Vespar, Ze Menezes, Dino 7 Cordas, Luizao, Martinho da Vila, among many others. Tracks include:

Cheiro de Mato

Hello, good evening! Let’s start a new week with a very important artist that has not been released at Loronix since April 21, 2007, where I had the chance to show Rosinha de Valenca – Ao Vivo (1966), a fantastic collaboration sponsored by Caetano Rodrigues, a extremely hard to find album awaited by several friends. Rosinha de Valenca is a gifted musician, acknowledged by renowned people such like Baden Powell, Aloysio de Oliveira, Sergio Mendes, among others. She died recently, exactly four years ago in June 10, 2004. I would like to say thank you to Jorge Mello for making this album available to our community. Let’s see.

This is Rosinha de Valenca – Cheiro de Mato (1976), for Odeon, featuring Rosinha de Valenca playing and singing a repertoire made mostly by her own compositions. It is important to say that Elifas Andreatto is responsible for creating the covers and inserts, truly awesome, especially the back cover, which is particularly beautiful. My pick for Loronix Preview Center is track 05 – Pedacinhos do Ceu (Waldyr Azevedo / Miguel Lima), featuring the cavaquinho of Mane do Cavaco, my personal friend who lives near my place. Mane do Cavaco is a great musician; he is always in action every Saturday playing choro with his group on a restaurant just behind my building. Cheiro de Mato brings a constellation of Brazilian musicians, as detailed on Personnel listing and inside the music files. Tracks include:

Personnel

Rosinha de Valenca
(violao, voice)
Perinho Albuquerque

Sebastião Tapajós - Sebastião Tapajós E Sua Guitarra Cósmica

We are back with Jorge Mello’s contributions, which are amazing in quality and also in size. I did not reach nearly half of the albums made available by him. Thanks once again, Jorge. This record was one of the first I prepared, but decided not to publish, since it was released earlier by Quimsy in his great Quimsy Mumbo Jumbo. However, I realized today with a back cover reading that Maestro Mário Castro Neves delivers arrangements and I could not resist on making at Loronix. Let’s see.

This is Sebastiao Tapajos – Sebastiao Tapajos e Sua Guitarra Cosmica (1968), for Forma, the third Sebastiao Tapajos career LP, produced by Joao Mello and arranged by Maestro Mario Castro Neves. The album opens with The Door’s Light my Fire, but soon turns back to the safe Brazilian music terrain with compositions by Sebastião Tapajos, Rildo Hora, Jorge Ben, Nonato Buzar, Antonio Carlos Jobim and others. Mario Castro Neves delivers creative and unique arrangements, actually, orchestrations, changing everything we are used to hear on standards like Wave and Zazueira. Tracks include:

01 – Light My Fire (Morrison / Manzarek / Densmore / Krieger)
02 – Rio das Ostras (Silveira)
03 – A Estrela e o Astronauta (Rildo Hora / Mário Castro Neves)
04 – Call Me (T. Hatch)
05 – Luar Em Veropeso (Tito Madi)
06 – Eu Quase Sozinho (Sebastião Tapajós)
07 – Cantiga de Errante (Rildo Hora / Heitor Quintella)
08 – A 200 P/h (Sebastião Tapajós)
09 – Zazueira (Jorge Ben)
10 – Wave (Tom Jobim)
11 – Sinhazinha (Nonato Buzar / Paulinho Tapajós)
12 -La Mentira (Álvaro Carrillo)

challenge-gonzagas2

Hello, good evening! A friend has left us this fantastic picture, saying it would be very important if someone could identify who is the girl that appears in the background watching the Gonzaga family, which in the photo is Luiz Gonzaga, his wife Helena and his son Gonzaguinha.

Even if we cannot identify who is she, the picture is awesome and worth to be here.

Hope uEnjoy!
