Valeu Roberta!

PS.: Amanhã teremos Walter Wanderley no Loronix. Inédito. Não percam!

Hello, good evening! It has been a month or two since I felt in love again with this masterpiece. Maybe I heard this record more than a thousand times and it is amazing how it gets better and better after each spin. It is one of the most impressive records I ever heard in my whole life. I bringing it back to the first page just to please friends who never get tired of crying for an upgrade. If you miss this one, stop reading and get yourself ready for a really lovely album. I’m keeping my original writings, including a new transfer, hi-quality cover scans and some other minor improvements.

One of the most difficult things I face when introducing Bossa Nova to new friends is to explain why Joao Gilberto is considered a genius. I know how hard it is to understand Joao Gilberto as a whole. Luiz Harding has providing us with some “basics”, which is the second and third Joao Gilberto albums released in 1960 and 1961, recently made available at Loronix.

This MASTERPIECE was recorded ten years after these two releases (if you agree the albums recorded with Stan Getz for Verve are not Joao Gilberto solo LPs) and it seems that a century has passed; Joao Gilberto is at his peak, taking to studio only his violao and a reduced percussion set. Joao Gilberto renditions of these ten songs are such like heaven on earth; take this album as something very special that will be with you for the rest of your life. I love this album and I’m now with a blend of two contradictory feelings, the happiness of showing to my friends at Loronix and the disappointment of knowing that it is out of print again.

This is Joao Gilberto – Joao Gilberto (1973), for Polydor. This is one of best albums made available at this website ever and it is very hard for me to describe it. My apologies, I think is better stop here, take it and listen with your heart and with all the love you have for the music from Brazil. Tracks include:

(voz, violao)
Sonny Carr

Zeca, This is the greatest, Just João. Milton Banana & a lovely duet with his wife Miúcha on “Izura”. This has the extra added bonus of an amazing studio engineer named Walter/Wendy Carlos, who’s famous for composing the “Clockwork Orange” OST. A six star session. Perfect & very understated in it’s beauty. João really shines here.

This one is really magnificent. Just the way Joao “moves” around the beat shows he’s a genius. A Brazilian friend of mine says that this man’s work can be compared with the exquisite art of the Asian masters of calligraphy, for its refined attention to details. Download it!

Zeca, nice post. Just you seem to forget there is a solo album between his Odeon trilogy and this white album: En Mexico, an album available at Loronix quite a while ago.

E a melodia é a mesma? A harmonia? O compasso?

Hi Zeca,
I have been living with this album for a couple of weeks and what can I say, it goes deeper each time I play it. It speaks to the soul. ‘Undiu’ is a work of genius. A very very special recording. As always, thanks. JWalker

Thank you for posting this! I was looking to purchase this album recently and found it is sadly out of print. I was wondering if anyone can confirm a statement on the Wikipedia: “The album’s sound engineer was famous electronic music pioneer Wendy Carlos.” If so that is really cool.

This is HANDS DOWN my favorite João Gilberto record. This is one that I have been making copies of for friends for years, the one that I have been raving about to them, the “secret weapon” for people who don’t seem to ‘get’ bossa nova. A wrote a description about it a long time ago, not for my blog but for a super-secret cult I belong too… Can’t find it now, but the gist of it was: This is one of the most intimate recording by anyone that I know of. It is as if João has come over to your house and is just sitting in your living room playing a marvelous, amazing set of songs. The percussion is astounding too — you may have to be a musician to understand just how hard it is for percussionists to play THAT quietly, THAT unobtrusively. I picture him crouched in the corner, in my living room, as João sits next to me on the sofa, singing softly. Just beyond words…

A true masterpiece, I do think its important to have many more of his records, but this one certainly has pretty much everything you would ever need. Desert island absolutely, a shame that it’s so hard to find and/or little known? I bought my copy nearly 20 years ago, and have shared and played it endlessly. I’m interested that this transfer has a bit more sharp sibilance than my copy, which I actually remember from the first time I heard it. A somewhat interesting choice in recording technique not to shave off the hard sounds, but as it was produced by Walter/Wendy Carlos, it seems a conscious choice. I used to refer to it as ‘licking the microphone’ but either way, its nice to have another ‘view’ of the record. Speaking of which, has anyone copied this from vinyl? I must say I’ve never heard that version… a bit obsessive, but when you have such a milestone, its fun to explore the different versions.

definitely some beautiful instrumentation and arrangements here thank you for posting however his voice is too close-miked for my taste and the tone a tad too funereal for an audience to get really carried away…

…and the links are dead:/
Apparently RS didn’t read the post and doesn’t care.
I on the other hand have had the unfortunate curse of not knowing this album at the age of 32.

I was very moved by your comments about this vivid record because I feel very much the same way. I first heard it when it was being played by a soundman before a concert here in New York. I walked back to him and begged for the information about the album, and bought it the next day. As Arto Lindsay once said about Mr. Gilberto, “His beauty is in his restraint.” The album is quite simply a masterpiece.

Hey there,
no question about the quality of this record, but I have the feeling, that the volume is a little bit low. Nevertheless, thanks as always for your great work, Zeca!
