Next time I get together with TNO, I will not forget to ask how he makes such nice 78rpm transfers to Loronixers. This one is really special, no background noise, nothing jeopardizing this beautiful 78rpm recorded by Os Cariocas in 1952 for RCA Victor. Such as TNO, Os Cariocas always surprise me. Nice little record that I strong recommend.

This is Os Cariocas | 78rpm – RCA Victor 800979 (1952), featuring two songs performed by this fantastic Brazilian vocal group. Tracks include:

01 – Leviana – Bolero (Bororo)
02 – Comigo e Assim – Choro (Ze Menezes / Luiz Bittencourt)

.

This is a very early Joao Donato recording as member of Os Namorados, featuring an anthological recording of Eu Quero um Samba with Joao Donato performing at the accordion with a very similar rhythm introduced by Joao Gilberto five years later at Chega de Saudade recording. It is truly amazing that nobody gave attention to this recording. Perhaps it was so modern that nobody understood what Joao Donato was making on his accordion.

This is Os Namorados | 78rpm – Sinter 532 (1953), featuring the accordion of Joao Donato with the obscure vocal and instrumental group Os Namorados. Tracks include:

01 – Eu Quero um Samba (Haroldo Barbosa / Janeth de Almeida)
02 – Tres Aves Marias (Anibal Guimaraes)

.

This album came to my attention by the writing of our friend Jorge, from Juazeiro, Bahia, which is the place where Joao Gilberto was born. Jorge said Joao Gilberto recorded this 78rpm just before he left Garotos da Lua in 1952. Thanks for the hint, Jorge, Joao Gilberto sings on a totally different manner on this little record, he uses his voice such like Orlando Silva, Francisco Alves or any other singer with that “Big” voice from the 40’s. Let’s see.

This is Joao Gilberto | 78rpm – Copacabana 096 (1952), the second Joao Gilberto album, featuring two songs, Quando Ela sai and Meia Luz. Truly amazing record, Joao Gilberto singing on a very different way here. Tracks include:

01 – Quando Ela Sai (Alberto Jesus / Alberto Penteado)
02 – Meia Luz (Hianto de Almeida / Joao Luiz)

.

The TNO, The Number One, the first Loronix contributor in the 78rpm strikes again. Actually, an amazing strike, the first Joao Gilberto studio recording, Todamerica 5075, April 9, 1951 as member of Garotos da Lua, featuring two songs 01 – Quando Voce Recordar and 02 – Amar e Bom.

This is Garotos da Lua | 78rpm – Todamerica 5075 (1951), featuring the first Joao Gilberto studio recording. There is nothing more to say, except that download is being provided as direct link and also that Maestro Cipo and Sua Orquestra backs Joao Gilberto and Garotos da Lua on both tracks. Tracks include:

01 – Quando Voce Recordar (Walter Souza / Milton Silva)
02 – Amar e Bom (Zequeti “Ze Ketti” / Walter Abdalla)

.

I’m happy to announce that TNO, our solid 78rpm contributor is now back to business, delivering several 78rpm records in a single contribution. TNO kept the same quality standard of his first contributions, the scans are nice and the quality of the transfer is unbelievable.

Let’s start this new set of contributions with Anjos do Inferno, which is a vocal and instrumental group that made a great success in the 40’s with several recording releases. Anjos do Inferno had different formation along decades, being responsible for revealing legends like Miltinho and Lucio Alves.

This is Anjos do Inferno | 78rpm – RCA Victor 80-0597 (1949), featuring two Sambas, Nega (Waldemar Gomes / Affonso Teixeira) and 13 de Ouro (Marino Pinto / Herivelto Martins). Additionally, I’m making available a excerpt from a 1949 Mexican movie, Perdida, with Anjos do Inferno and Ninon Sevilla performing Nega, the same song available at side A of this nice TNO contribution.

Tracks include:

01 – Nega (Waldemar Gomes / Affonso Teixeira)
02 – 13 de Ouro (Marino Pinto / Herivelto Martins)

.

Let’s start this Samba Saturday at Loronix with a classy album, awaited by several Loronixers since it was presented months ago. I was very reluctant to make this album, since it is a gift given by a very special friend on a very special day, my first flight to Sao Paulo as zecalouro. It was also my first chance to meet Caetano Rodrigues.

I want to say thank you, thank you, and thank you to Mr. W. He was the first Loronixer I could meet in Sao Paulo and I will never forget the support and this beautiful gift he gave and I kindly present here to Loronixers.

This is Aracy de Almeida – Noel Rosa | 78rpm (1950), for Continental, which is a “box set” featuring three different Aracy de Almeida 78rpm recordings with Noel Rosa compositions. The three discs were recorded for the occasion; they are numbered in a sequence as 16317-A-B, 16318-A-B and 16319-A-B. Maestro Radames Gnattali is in charge of arrangements and three different groups back Aracy de Almeida on each disc, the first one features Quarteto Continental, the second has Francisco Sergi e Sua Orquestra and the third brings Vero e Sua Orquestra. My apologies to the friends who were waiting several months for this release, this collection is truly amazing and now I understand their worry. Tracks include:

01 – Palpite Infeliz (Noel Rosa) – Quarteto Continental
02 – Conversa de Botequim (Noel Rosa / Vadico) – Quarteto Continental
03 – Feitico da Vila (Noel Rosa / Vadico) – Francisco Sergi e Sua Orquestra
04 – Ultimo Desejo (Noel Rosa) – Francisco Sergi e Sua Orquestra
05 – Nao Tem Traducao (Noel Rosa) – Vero e Sua Orquestra
06 – O x do Problema (Noel Rosa) – Vero e Sua Orquestra

.

Doris Monteiro – 78rpm | Todamerica 5220 (1952)

Here we go on the 78-rpm album of the day and the first in the format recorded by the legendary label Todamerica, active from the 50’s until the early 70’s. As far as I know, Todamerica released only in the 78rpm format, even after the popularization of the LPs. Todamerica made these beautiful labels with pictures of the artists, such as this one featuring Doris Monteiro.

This is Doris Monteiro – 78rpm | 5220 (1952), for Todamerica, featuring songs from the Brazilian movie Agulha no Palheiro. Orchestra backs Doris Monteiro. I’m not sure if Doris Monteiro was also an actress on this movie, it is something that really worth checking out. Tracks include:

01 – Agulha no Palheiro (Cesar Cruz / Vargas Junior)
02 – Perdao (Cesar Cruz)

.
