Hello, good evening! Let’s start this Sunday showing Loronixers a kind of album that is not been released for several weeks, an orchestra album with renditions of Brazilian standards in the Samba style. Brazilian maestros such like Portinho (the best in the style), Carioca and Zaccarias delivered several ones in the 60’s, but this one is different, featuring two Maestros, both credited as the main performers. Let’s see.

This is Astor Silva & Oswaldo Borba – Metais em Brasa no Samba (1962), for Philips, featuring Astor Silva in charge of arrangements and Oswaldo Borba as orchestra director and conductor. I’m having a special pleasure to show this album, a Loronix friend from Hungary wrote me today asking support for the creation of an international Astor Silva fan club. He said he could only know Astor Silva with Loronix and he is now crazy for recordings and anything else from the Maestro. This is fantastic and I will keep Loronixers informed as he better develop the idea. Tracks include:

01 – Samba de Uma Nota Só (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
02 – Brasiliana Nº 1 (Astor Silva)
03 – Chega de Saudade (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
04 – Arrasta a Sandália (Osvaldo Vasques “Baiaco” / Aurélio Gomes)
05 – Chora Tua Tristeza (Oscar Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini)
06 – O Que É Que a Baiana Tem (Dorival Caymmi)
07 – O Samba da Minha Terra (Dorival Caymmi)

09 – Minha Palhoça (J. Cascata)
10 – A Felicidade (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
11 – Menina Moça (Luis Antônio)
12 – Maracangalha (Dorival Caymmi)

Hello, Good Evening! They are back. I thought I could resist longer showing you this album, but it was impossible, so good it is and also so nice is this cover artwork. Both are in evidence since Caetano Rodrigues sent to us the first Marisa Barroso LP and Astor e Sua Orquestra – Sambas.. So Sambas! yesterday, as well. Let’s show Loronixers another outcome of this very interesting partnership between Marisa Barroso and Astor Silva.

This is Marisa Barroso – Marisa Barroso (1962), for Columbia. Marisa Barroso is again directed and backed by Astor Silva arrangements that also plays trombone. In my opinion, this is equivalent or better than the first, which is the third and last Marisa Barroso album, sent by Caetano Rodrigues. This is her second LP and we are desperately looking for Marisa Barroso debut recorded in 1961 for Copacabana as Marisa Barroso – Cantigas para Enganar o Tempo, with Aloisio e Seu Conjunto. Tracks include:

01 – Na Cadência do Samba (Ataulfo Alves / Paulo Gesta)
02 – Renuncia (Lauro Miranda / Otávio Teixeira)
03 – Parti (Ed Lincoln / Silvio César)
04 – Chora Coração (Denis Brean / Osvaldo Guilherme)
05 – Tema do Boneco de Palha (Sivan Castelo Neto / Vera Brasil)
06 – Poema do Olhar (Evaldo Gouveia / Jair Amorim)
07 – Doçura (Alcyr Pires Vermelho / Maria Isabel)
08 – Vem Pro Samba (Orlandivo)
09 – Samba de Sofrer (Hélio Justo / Titto Santos)

Hello, Good Evening! Here we go on another Caetano Rodrigues contribution, a solo LP by an artist that always delivers wonderful results on everything he makes, from participations as trombonist to more complex accomplishments as arranger on other artists albums. Astor Silva is really extraordinary.

This is Astor Silva e Sua Orquestra – Samba… So Samba! (1963), for Columbia. This is the first Astor Silva album at Loronix and his discography is huge, releasing more than 10 LPs as Astor Silva and other additional albums using other names, such like Lord Astor and as member of the group Lord Astor e Seus Dixiedrolls. I will be tracking down more Astor Silva solo releases and we will have more to come in a near future, he was a fantastic musician and deserves a stronger approach at Loronix. Tracks include:

02 – Garota de Ipanema (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
03 – Só Danço Samba (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)

Brazilian female singers have something special. Nelson Motta said one day that Brazil is a country of female singers. I agree. Our community gives always a nice feedback on Brazilian divas. It is time to remember a Brazilian diva that was introduced to us by Caetano Rodrigues, Thelma Soares or just Thelma. I’m quite sure that only a few Loronixers knew Thelma before presented here.

Caetano is now thrilling us with a new female singer and I think she can make as Thelma. Meet Marisa Barroso with the legendary Astor Silva from Os Ipanemas.

This is Marisa Barroso & Astor Silva – Marisa Barroso / Astor (1963), for Columbia. Thelma was revealed by Vinicius de Moraes and Beatriz Azevedo de Brito by Ary Barroso, this is the reason for the artistic name. Marisa Barroso recorded several 78rpm and three LPs, such as Thelma that also made three albums. Anyway, I think it is better hear Marisa Barroso & Astor Silva, instead of finding coincidences. Astor is a top-notch musician that we know for several albums at Loronix, performing the roles of trombonist and arranger. Tracks include:

01 – Chorando Você (Glauco / Fernando Pereira / João Ribeiro)
02 – Ele e Maria (Othon Russo / Niquinho)
03 – Banca de Pobre (Rildo Hora / Marcos André)
04 – Bondinho do Pão de Açúcar (Victor Freire / A. C. de Albuquerque)
05 – Abc do Balanço (Orlandivo / Roberto Nascimento)
06 – Esse Seu Olhar (Tom Jobim) — Só Em Teus Braços (Tom Jobim)
07 – Bossa Nova Nº 1 (José Maria de Abreu)
08 – Ódio (Aloísio Figueiredo / Nelson Figueiredo)
09 – Lamento Negro (Orlandivo / Roberto Jorge)
10 – Garota de Ipanema (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
11 – Vou Ficar Com Você (Sergio Napp)
12 – Brincando Gostei (Watel / Orlandivo)

Once again, instrumental music from two Brazilian legends, Luiz Eça – the renowned pianist from Tamba Trio – and Astor Silva – arranger and also one of the best Brazilian trombonists with the 1961 LP Cada Qual Melhor!.

The repertoire is made of Brazilian and American standards, such as: Ary Barroso, Tom Jobim, Gershwin, among others. Eça and Astor are accompanied by Astro Silva e Seu Conjunto. Even without knowing, Loronixers had the “touch” of Astor on several posts before as arranger. Astor was the lead arranger of CBS label, delivering several contributions on LPs of Elis Regina, Elza Soares, Roberto Carlos and others.
