Hello, good evening! Friends from Brazil will have a big weekend ahead, starting today with most of people already home to come back on Monday. Friends from Rio de Janeiro will probably come back on Tuesday, there is another local holiday in Rio de Janeiro, at least I heard about. These holidays have a direct effect on Loronix with friends leaving computers turned off to go away from the big cities. I like these holidays to *stay* at Rio de Janeiro, the city gets empty and better. Anyway, better talk about music and about this album, the first recorded by Conjunto Farroupilha in the 12-inch format, 1957. Let’s see.

This is Conjunto Farroupilha – Gauchos em HI-FI (1957), for Columbia, a very early album by the influential and unique Conjunto Farroupilha. Gauchos em HI-FI cannot be taken as the late Os Farroupilhas em HI-FI, recorded by the same Columbia in 1960. Gauchos em HI-FI features instrumental arrangements by Maestro Enrico Simonetti and vocal arrangements by Tasso Bangel. Tracks include:

01 – Noites Gaúchas (Paraguassu)
02 – Ratoeira (Paixão Cortes)
03 – Carreteiro (Caco Velho / Piratini)
04 – Seu Belendrengue (Paixão Cortes)
05 – Acalanto Gaúcho (Carmon Lewis)
06 – Pezinho (Barbosa Lessa / Paixão Cortes) Chimarrita Balão (Barbosa Lessa / Paixão Cortes)
07 – Roda Carreta (Paulo Ruschell)
08 – Sapateio (Carmon Lewis)
09 – Vela Para São Nicolau (Carmon Lewis)
10 – Prenda Minha (Tradicional)
11 – Meu Cabelo (Paixão Cortes / Barbosa Lessa) Maçanico (Paixão Cortes / Barbosa Lessa)
12 – Negrinho do Pastoreio (Barbosa Lessa)

The last challenge winner is Outrasbossas! He made it, Conjunto Vocal Farroupilha is that group and this album brings at the back cover that photo. By the way, he was a serious candidate to win that challenge. Outrasbossas is an expert on Brazilian music from the 50’s and even previous decades, his blog is a reference and you will find several wonders from that time. Do not miss http://outrasbossas.blogspot.com.

This is the second LP from the last set of 10-inch contributions and it is probably the one that I like most, featuring Conjunto Vocal Farroupilha and their first album, recorded in 1953. I could only identify Conjunto Vocal Farroupilha today, since the cover does not bring the main performer name, only the album title. Let’s see.

This is Conjunto Vocal Farroupilha – Gaucho (1953), for Radio, featuring arrangements by Aldo Taranto. Lead by Tasso Bangel, Conjunto Vocal Farroupilha started in 1948 at Radio Farroupilha, a radio station in the city of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. Later, they removed the Vocal from the group name and released more than 15 albums on a recording career that spanned three decades. Tracks include:

01 – Balaio (Barbosa Lessa / Paixão Cortes)
02 – Tatú (Barbosa Lessa / Paixão Cortes)
03 – Negrinho do Pastoreio (Barbosa Lessa)
04 – Me Dá Um Mate (Barbosa Lessa)
05 – Chirimindé (Barbosa Lessa / Paixão Cortes)
06 – Amargo (A. Amábile / Lupicínio Rodrigues)
07 – Carreteiro (Barbosa Lessa)
08 – Rancheira da Carreirinha (Barbosa Lessa)

Wonderful. I always thought I was right to pick some singles and EPs, but this album makes me feel that I’m 100% right. There are several treasures to discover on these little records and this one is a great surprise. Never gave a chance to it and when I gave it a spin today it was magic.

This is Os Farroupilhas – Os Farroupilhas EP 45rpm, for Columbia, featuring four tracks of pure beauty, nice repertoire and amazing voice arrangements. Little I know about this album, such as personnel and even release date, perhaps it was made in the early 60’s; it has much of Bossa Nova on it. Tracks include:

01 – Nunca (Lupscinio Rodrigues)
02 – Noites de Moscou (D.P. arrangements & Lyrics Inah Bangel)
03 – Sabado em Copacabana (Dorival Caymmi / Carlos Guinle)
04 – Meu Rio Grande (Garoto)

Here is another cool record sent by Caetano Rodrigues to Loronixers, Bossa 12 Vezes (1965), for Farroupilha, mixing four different artists – really different – on a single LP, featuring, Jongo Trio, Leny Eversong, Conjunto Farroupilha and Bobby Mackay (completely unknown to zecalouro). Refer, if you can assist us on Bobby Mackay, we appreciate.

Have you ever stop to think how many good records were released in 1965? What a year! I like statistics and I think that it would be very interest if someone makes to Loronixers some kind of Loronix albums per year chart. I’m quite sure that we will see 1965 taking the lead over the other years. Tracks include:

01 – A Resposta (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle) – Conjunto Farroupilhas
02 – Aleluia (Edu Lobo / Ruy Guerra) – Leny Eversong
03 – Seu Chopin Desculpe (Johnny Alf) – Jongo Trio
04 – Bossa Nova (I Say) (B. Mackay / J. Bradford) – Bobby Mackay
05 – Samba Internacional (Sidney Morais) – Conjunto Farroupilhas
06 – Arrastão (Edu Lobo / Vinicius de Moraes) – Leny Eversong
07 – Ela Vai Ela Vem (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli) – Jongo Trio
08 – Cool Cool Samba (J. Bradford / R. Simpson) – Bobby Mackay

O Conjunto Farroupilha – Os Farroupilhas na TV (1960)

O Conjunto Farroupilha is a band from Brazil South – the same region that gave us Elis Regina and others – dedicated to folkloric and regional music that later moved to Sao Paulo and adhere the Bossa Nova wave. They also have some German influence, since Brazil South had significant Germany migration in the early twenty century.

zecalouro will ask for AMG help for O Conjunto Farroupilha biography, as follows:

The Conjunto Farroupilha was created on the Rádio Farroupilha in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in 1948. Initially dedicated to folkloric and regional repertory, recording with success “Gauchinha Bem-Querer,” “Piazito Carreteiro,” “Prenda Minha,” “Boi Barroso,” “Chimarrita Balão,” “Negrinho do Pastoreio,” and “Pezinho,” they also had success in the 1960s in the bossa nova genre. In 1952 their first album was only the fourth to be pressed in Brazil. Four years later the group moved to São Paulo, beginning a series of tours throughout Brazil and abroad. Their international tours, kept up regularly for years, included countries like China, U.S.S.R., Germany, and Venezuela, where they also recorded albums. In the ’60s they adhered to bossa nova, having recorded with success “Bolinha de Sabão” (Orlandivo/Adilson de Azevedo), “Moça da Chuva” (Paulinho Nogueira/Rita Moreira), “Azul Contente” (Walter Santos/Tereza Souza), “Papai Walt Disney,” and “Por Causa de Você” (Tom Jobim/Dolores Durán). In that decade they had their own show at TV Record, in São Paulo. Around 1963, Tasso Bangel and Danilo Vidal created the Farroupilha recording company. In 1971 the group was dissolved. After they teamed up again in 1983 for a performance on the regional TV show Som Brasil they recorded the LP Farroupilha 35.
