Dick Farney & Casé - Jazz After Midnight

Hello, good evening! It is nice to show an album recorded by Dick Farney after a long time. Loronix last Dick Farney release was made on the very beginning of February. This album is really hard to find in its first 1956 issue. This is probably the first Dick Farney album in the 12-inch format, but I’m sure this is the first 12-inch made by Columbia in Brazil. Recorded live at Teatro da Cultura Artistica, Sao Paulo, 11 July, 1956, exactly nineteen years before the passing of George Gershwin. Let’s see.

This is Dick Farney – JAM | Jazz After Midnight (1956), for Columbia, featuring instrumental renditions of George Gershwin music, performed by Dick Farney and top-notch Brazilian Jazz musicians, including the legendary sax player Case, Rubens Barsotti (from Zimbo Trio) and Chou Viana. This is really a JAM session, with no rehearsal by the musicians. Tracks include:

Personnel

Dick Farney
(piano)
Case
(sax)
Rubens Barsotti
(drums)
Chou Viana
(bass)

Track List

01 – Strike Up The Band (George Gershwin)

Dick Farney Trio - Concerto de Jazz ao Vivo (1973)

JOAO-SP sent us this great Dick Farney album, a missing piece on Dick Farney discography at Loronix. Here we have Dick Farney as pianist, not as a singer, performing renditions of international standards. I could not identify where this recording session took place, but my best guess it was at Auditorio do Globo, since the photos are credited to O Globo, a newspaper based in Rio de Janeiro. By the way, it is unbelievable that all Dick Farney career albums are not available commercially. Let’s see.

This is Dick Farney Trio – Concerto de Jazz ao Vivo (1973), for London, featuring Dick Farney Trio performing live for the first time with a formation that brings two Jongo Trio musicians and also two active Dick Farney collaborators of many 70’s releases, Antonio Pinheiro Filho, also known as Toninho and Sebastiao Oliveira da Paz, the legendary Saba. If you are in the mood of listening a Jazz concert, featuring three great musicians performing a repertoire of standards with lots of improvisations, this is the album you were waiting for. Thanks once again JOAO-SP for this always surprising and never end set of albums you kindly sent to Loronix community. Tracks include:

Personnel

DICK FARNEY TRIO

Dick Farney
(piano)

02 – Thank You (Dziekuje) (Dave Brubeck)
03 – When Lights Are Low (Carter / Williams)

This is a moving documentary with 17 minutes running time with a tribute to Dick Farney broadcasted on Brazilian TV by the time of his passing. There are available excerpts of old movies, Dick Farney performances that I never saw before, interviews with Lucio Alves, Braguinha, Billy Blanco and a beautiful closing with Dick Farney’s wife interview at the couple place. Fascinating, even if you don’t understand Portuguese it is really worth checking.

Hope uEnjoy!

Dick Farney - Dick Farney em Cancoes para a Noite de Meu Bem (1960).

dickHello, good evening! I’m now very happy that Balanco Trio LP has now a better place at Loronix front page. I like that album and Luiz Harding confirmation, my guess on Milton Banana is confirmed. Thanks Luiz and thanks everybody who engage of comment section. Well, the show must go on and there is nothing better than start this Tuesday with one an album that I did not know from one of the artists that I like most, Dick Farney. Let’s see.

This is Dick Farney – Cancoes para a Noite de Meu Bem, com Waldemiro Lemke e Sua Orquestra (1960), for Odeon. In a first sight, I thought this was a tribute to Dolores Duran by the reference of Dolores Duran song a Noite do Meu Bem, but Dick Farney plays piano, sings in Portuguese, English and has the accompaniment of an orchestra in charge of Maestro Waldemiro Lemke. I’m surprised with this perhaps unknown Dick Farney album that I never had the chance to hear before. This post is dedicated to the greatest Dick Farney fan on planet Earth and probably the solar system, our great friend cvllos. Tracks include:

01 – A Noite do Meu Bem (Dolores Duran)
02 – Esquecendo Você (Tom Jobim)
03 – Amor Sem Adeus (Luis Bonfá / Tom Jobim)

Dick Farney - Dick Farney e Seu Quinteto (1955)

Hello, good evening! I think cvllos and every Dick Farney enthusiast will be amazed to see another sought after 10-inch album from the early years. I’m amazed with my luck to get the second one in less than two weeks. I’ve been searching with cvllos the five Dick Farney first 10-inch LPs for many months. So far, this is the oldest available at Loronix, released in 1954, I’m sure with the help of our community the remaining ones should come very soon. Let’s see.

Dick Farney Quinteto - JAZZ FESTIVAL Nº 1 (JAM SESSION) (1956)

Dick Farney is an artist that has the preference of many Loronixers. I think everybody had already the chance of taking one of his albums available at Loronix with Dick Farney performing as an instrumentalist or singing. He was very active on recordings, with more than 150 albums on a career that spans decades, starting in the mid 40’s and ending in the late 80’s. Dick Farney recorded 5 albums in the 10-inch format and I got really surprised today when I realize this is the first in the format made available at Loronix. I think this release will make the day of many friends, especially cvllos, which is the greatest Dick Farney fan I have ever seen. Let’s see.

This is Dick Farney e Quinteto – Jazz Festival Nr. 1 | Jam Session (1956), for RGE, recorded live at Teatro de Cultura Artistica, Sao Paulo as part of Primeiro Festival Brasileiro de Jazz, organized by Jazz Club de Sao Paulo. Dick Farney e Quinteto line-up the same musicians available at the acclaimed Jazz After Midnight (1956), featuring, Dick Farney, Case, Rubinho, Choo Viana and Ismael Campiglia, credited as an amateur musician. So far, I could not identify each instrument Ismael Campiglia plays. Jazz Festival Nr. 1 is a short session, limited by the size of the 10-inch format, but is great music with a great performance by the legendary Case on sax. Tracks include:

Personnel

Dick Farney
(piano)
Case
(sax)
Rubinho
(drums)
Shoo Viana
(bass)
Ismael Campiglia

Track List

01 – Pennies From Heaven (J. Burke / A. Johnson)

Joao Gilberto, Sylvia Telles & Dick Farney - Joao Gilberto, Silvia Telles & Dick Farney (1988)

This is a very interesting compilation sent by Dona Iara that it is not listed on any discography, at least the ones that I could check. By the way, several compilations were released in the late 80’s and most of them are pretty unknown. I don’t know if it is a matter of limited editions, but they are really worth checking. This LPs were recorded in the turn of the shift between vinyl to CD and they have a pretty good sound. This one is really obscure featuring remastered tunes of three great artists. Let’s see.

This is Joao Gilberto, Sylvia Telles & Dick Farney – Joao Gilberto, Silvia Telles & Dick Farney (1988), for EMI-Odeon, perfect for those who are giving the first steps towards Brazilian music and want to have in a glance Bossa Nova cuts from three legends. These recordings range from 1957 to 1961, as detailed on track list. Tracks include:

01 – Desafinado – JOAO GILBERTO (1958)
02 – Dindi – SYLVIA TELLES (1959)
03 – Este Seu Olhar – DICK FARNEY (1959)
04 – O Barquinho – JOAO GILBERTO (1961)
05 – A Felicidade – SYLVIA TELLES (1959)
06 – Alguem como Tu – DICK FARNEY (1958)
07 – Insensatez – JOAO GILBERTO (1961)
08 – Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Voce – SYLVIA TELLES (1957)
09 – Corcovado – JOAO GILBERTO (1960)

Publicado em: Tuesday, November 13, 2007 by zecalouro

We had a Dick Farney video a couple of days ago and since that day I did not stop thinking on releasing another Dick Farney album. It has been a long time since the last one, Dick Farney – Noite (1981), released in the end of August. It is a great coincidence to find this one, recorded live in 1986, which is the same year of the video presented. Let’s see.

This is Dick Farney – Ao Vivo | Inverno & Verao (1986), for Inverno & Verao, which is probably an independent release sponsored by Inverno & Verao nightclub in Sao Paulo. I have this album with me since reissued on CD in 1992 as Dick Farney – A Arte do Espetaculo, for RGE, but I always thought it was just a compilation. I’m really glad to find out that it is the same vinyl original issued in 1986, plus a lot of extra tracks filling all the CD with a running time of 54 minutes. This is a real find. I’m showing the original issue artwork, the reissue cover is not so good and it is completely damaged. Tracks include:

Personnel

Dick Farney
(piano, voice)
Toninho Pinheiro
(drums)
Gabriel Jorge Bahlis
(bass)
Hilton Jorge Valente
(piano)

Track List

01 – Perdido
02 – Copacabana
03 – Nick Bar
04 – Aeromoca
05 – Tereza da Praia
06 – Uma Loura
07 – Cassino da Urca Medley
08 – A Saudade Mata a Gente
09 – Esse Seu Olhar
10 – Alguem Como Tu
11 – Marina
12 – Noturno em Sao Paulo
13 – Ponto Final
14 – The Lady is a Tramp
15 – Perdido de Amor
16 – All the Way
17 – Solidao
18 – Se todos Fossem Iguais a Voce

.

Friends are asking why the 78-rpm records are not coming anymore. I’m sorry to give this answer, but I ran out of 78-rpms, not a major problem since friends are looking for new records and some contribution are scheduled to arrive in the forthcoming weeks. Meanwhile, let’s remember the 78 rpm posts with this fantastic contribution sent by cvllos, great friend of zecalouro and a lucky LP hunter. Let’s see.

This is Dick Farney & Lucio Alves – Serie Idolos da MPB Nr. 6 (1974), for Continental, also known as “Relevo”. cvllos contribution was very useful to understand “Relevo” series, in most cases featuring Continental compilations of 78 rpm. The folks at Continental made a very nice work with this one, delivering side A with Dick Farney and side B with Lucio Alves. There are several details to highlight on each track, such as the participation of Antonio Carlos Jobim e Seu Conjunto at 12 – Casinha Pequena and a Dick Farney track recorded in Argentina with Jorge Kenny and orchestra. Do not miss track list with complimentary information. Tracks include:

Dick Farney

01 – Copacabana (1946) (Joao de Barro / Alberto Ribeiro) – Eduardo Patane e Sua Orquestra de Cordas
02 – Somos Dois (1948) (A. Cavalcanti / Klecius / L. Antonio) – Jose Maria e Sua Orquestra
03 – Uma Loura (1951) (Herve Cordivil) – Dick Farney (piano), Dinarte (guitar) and Vidal (bass)

I’m glad and really proud with our community by making this post. It has been less than a week since we started showing 78 rpm recordings and this is the first contribution in the format. By the way, fantastic contribution with a superb ripping and magnificent label scans. This little and old record is in a really good shape. It seems our friend – let’s call him as TNO – traveled back in time to get this record. Thanks a million TNO, you are The Number One in the 78 rpm format.

This is Dick Farney e Seu Quinteto – 78rpm | 16807 (1953), for Continental, featuring Dick Farney and not credited musicians as a quintet, performing instrumental renditions of a Samba tune and a Choro written by Dick Farney. Tracks include:

Dick Farney – Noite (1981)

Publicado em: Thursday, August 30, 2007 by zecalouro

I was missing Dick Farney and I’m confident this is a great choice. I was thinking about releasing something great sent by moos, but I decided to save it for Sunday, since Monday is the day of highest traffic at Loronix. Sometimes friends ask me for a nice Dick Farney pick and my answer is another question, to know if the friend prefers Dick Farney singing or Dick Farney performing at the piano.

This album address both worlds, side A has Dick Farney singing with piano accompaniment and side B has Dick Farney performing with his usual trio formation of piano, bass and drums. Everybody asks me for a Dick Farney album and my answer is another question, which one do you prefer? Dick Farney singing or instrumental? With Noite nobody goes wrong.

This is Dick Farney – Noite (1981), for Som da Gente. It is amazing how Dick Farney performs nicely on an album recorded very close to the end of his recording career, singing and playing. The repertoire is based on American standards with the exception of 06 – Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Voce (Antonio Carlos Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes), simply the best instrumental rendition of this song that I ever heard. This track worth the entire album. Tracks include:

Personnel

Dick Farney
(piano)
Hilton Valente
(piano on tracks 04 and 05)
Renato Loyola
(bass)
Toninho Pinheiro
(drums)

Track List

01 – Autumn In New York (V. Duke)
02 – Deep In a Dream (J. Van Heusen)
03 – This Love Of Mine (S. Parker / H. Sanicola / Frank Sinatra)
04 – Things We Did Last Summer (S. Cahn / J. Stine)
05 – One For My Baby (Harold Arlen / J. Mercer)
06 – Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Você (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
07 – Green Dolphin Street (B. Kaper)
08 – All The Things You Are (J. Kern / O. Hammerstein II)
09 – Theme For June (H. Brubeck)

This magnificent album features the last recordings of Dick Farney taken from a mix of concert and speech performed at MIS – Museu da Imagem e do Som, in Sao Paulo, 1987. Additionally, Dick Farney performs several songs, the songs that he like most to play, recorded at Dick Farney home by a friend, Cesar Pereira Lopes using a professional tape recorder. This record was not released commercially; it was part of a marketing initiative of a Brazilian company, Polibrasil, in the celebration of its 10th anniversary.

This is Dick Farney – Dick Farney (1988), for Polibrasil, a double album featuring a single track on disc one, side A, the last Dick Farney concert at MIS and remaining tracks the remastered home tapes recorded by Dick Farney at home through several sessions in 1975. Thanks once again Luiz Harding for sending this very hard to find album to our community, this is a very moving album for Dick Farney fans all around the world. Tracks include:

01 – On The Sunny Side Of The Street (D. Fields / J. McHugh)
02 – Prelúdio Nº 20 de Chopin (Frederic Chopin)

This was probably one of the hardest to find albums recorded by Dick Farney, actually this is the hardest Dick Farney on 12-inch, the first Dick Farney albums released at the 10-inch format seems to be near to impossible. Luiz strikes again, now with music and video. A legendary Dick Farney fan that we know will probably have breakfast tomorrow with the sound of the piano.

This is Dick Farney – Um Piano ao Cair da Tarde Nr. 2 (1975), for Odeon, the continuation of the nice Um Piano ao Cair da Tarde, already available at Loronix. The same sucessful formula, Dick Farney for advanced listeners, no bass, no drums, no singing, only Dick Farney and the piano with a repertoire of standards. In addition to the music, I’m showing a wonderful video with the complete participation of Dick Farney Trio at TV Cultura. The video has a relaxed atmosphere with Dick Farney singing and backed by Toninho (drums) and Saba (bass). Tracks include:

01 – You Go To My Head (H. Gillespie / J. F. Coots)
02 – Autumn Leaves (Les Feuilles Mortes) (J. Kosma / J. Prevert)
03 – What’s New (B. Haggart / J. Burke)
04 – Georgia On My Mind (H. Carmichael)
05 – September Song (Kurt Weill / W. Anderson)
06 – Because Of You (A. Hammerstein / D. Wilkinson)
07 – Tea For Two (V. Youmans / I. Cassar)
08 – It Might as Well Be Spring (R. Rodgers / O. Hammerstein II)
09 – When I Fall In Love (V. Young / E. Heyman)
10 – St Louis Blues (W. C. Handy)
11 – My Funny Valentine (R. Rodgers / L. Hart)
12 – Swanee River (Old Folks At Home) (S. Forster)

I know several fans of Dick Farney and this post is dedicated to all of them, but there is a special one, a Loronixer, that I want to mention, which is cvllos. If Dick Farney fans decide to name a leader, cvllos would be the one. I know very well the modus operandi of a fan and I’m wondering cvllos surprise in the morning when opening Loronix with this wonderful and very hard to find Dick Farney album, which is my choice for the last post today.

This is Dick Farney e Seu Trio – Dick Farney no Waldorf (1960), for Odeon. I’m only a little bit disappointed with this cover artwork, on my dreams, this cover had a beautiful photo of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in the night with lights and the name of Dick Farney on yellow. In the other hand, the music is much better than the soundtrack of my dreams with Dick Farney performing a repertoire based on the songs he played during one-year season at Waldorf Astoria, 1957. Dick Farney Trio members were not credited. Tracks include:

01 – These Foolish Things (J. Strachey)
02 – Jeepers Creepers (H. Warren / J. Mercer)
03 – Over The Rainbow (Harold Arlen / E. Y. Harburg)
04 – All Of Me (S. Simons / G. Marks)
05 – You Took Advantage Of Me (R. Rodgers / L. Hart)
06 – You Stepped Out Of a Dream (G. Kahn / N. H. Brown)
07 – Moonlight Becames You (V. Heusen / J. Burke)
08 – Lullaby Of Birdland (G. Shearing / B. Y. Forster)
09 – Waldorf Blues (Dick Farney)
10 – Não Tem Solução (Dorival Caymmi / Carlos Guinle)

.

Não tinha esse disco. Porém, graças aos amigos TioBili e Martoni, ele agora pode ser buscado na Rádio Forma e Elenco.

It is disappointing when you do not give value to something based on personal criterion and mannerisms or taking the others opinion and the truth. That’s exactly what happened with the first collaboration between Dick Farney and Claudette Soares, Tudo Isto e Amor, Volume One. I thought Volume Two – made available a couple of weeks ago at Loronix – was the best album and I’m shamed to realize this week that Volume One is several times better than the previous one. Volume one is really nice and I decided to show it today to Loronixers, perhaps I feel better on making it.

This is Dick Farney & Claudette Soares – Tudo Isto e Amor (1976), for Odeon. Better repertoire, beautiful arrangements and breathtaking performances in duo or solo by Dick Farney and Claudette Soares. I have been reading today several reviews and this album is highly recommended, no exception. Dick Farney makes a fascinating rendition of Tenderly (Lawrence / Gross), made available bellow as a teaser showing Farney interpretations on top of images of Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of the last century. Tracks include:

01 – O Que É Amar (Johnny Alf)
02 – Minha Namorada (Carlos Lyra / Vinicius de Moraes)
03 – Este Seu Olhar (Tom Jobim)
04 – De Você Eu Gosto (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
05 – É Preciso Dizer Adeus (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
06 – Castigo (Dolores Duran)
07 – Tudo Isto É Amor (Laura Maria)
08 – Fotografia (Tom Jobim)
09 – Tenderly (Lawrence / Gross)
10 – O Nosso Olhar (Sergio Ricardo)
11 – Somos Dois (Armando Cavalcanti / Klécius Caldas / Luis Antônio)

I just spoke with Caetano by phone and he said the next package – a special and very different one – would be mailed tomorrow, first time in the morning. Tomorrow will be another day of tension on a day that seems to last 48 hours. Several other things are scheduled for tomorrow and I think it is better stop talking about it now before I spoil Caetano’s surprise with my big tongue.

These phone calls are also useful to get recommendations from Caetano and this album was celebrated when mentioned, by the way, what can go wrong when you have Dick Farney and Claudette Soares together? I really don’t know.

This is Dick Farney e Claudette Soares – Dick & Claudette | Tudo Isto e Amor Vol. 2 (1976), for Odeon, the second out of two albums released by Dick Farney in collaboration with Claudette Soares. This is not about Dick Farney piano accompanying Claudette Soares, they are singing together and the duets are beautiful, their voices and interpretation styles matches nicely. Personnel is not credited, but Dick Farney plays piano for sure and the legendary Saba from Jongo Trio is the executive producer. Tracks include:

01 – Chuva (Durval Ferreira / Pedro Camargo)
02 – Nós (Johnny Alf)
03 – Demais (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
04 – Casualmente (Berimbau)
05 – Fim de Caso (Dolores Duran)
06 – Apelo (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
07 – Nick Bar (José Vasconcelos)
08 – Preciso Aprender a Ser Só (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
09 – Ela Foi Embora (Oscar Bellandi / Djalma Ferreira)
10 – Tomara (Novelli / Paulo César Pinheiro / Maurício Tapajós)
11 – O Amor Em Paz (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)

Hello, Good Evening! Thanks for the response to Loronix survey reminder sent yesterday and to the automatic emails sent today for the friends who engage the survey, but did not reach the end. I want to make public an answer to a very common question made by email, Survey results will be made available at Loronix after survey ending keeping everybody’s privacy. The results will be shown in terms of grand total percentages, such as: ratio between gender, styles, etc. I established a personal norm, to do not look at the results while survey is being carried out. I’m very curious about the outcome.

Let’s start the day with an album requested by many Loronixers from an artist that gather many new fans since we start showing his music here.

This is Dick Farney – Dick Farney (1976), for Odeon. Several Dick Farney albums do not have a tile and people use to adopt nicknames to describe them, this one is also know as “the one with Dick Farney standing besides a pole”, as you can check at cover artwork. Personnel is not available this time, but I’m quite sure Dick Farney Trio, which is Dick Farney (piano), Toninho (drums) and Saba (bass). A very discrete orchestra accompaniment is available on some tracks. This album has the original recording of Aeromoca (Billy Blanco), the song that made several Loronixers amazed on a Brazilian airline video. Tracks include:

01 – Aeromoça (Billy Blanco)
02 – Um Cantinho e Você (José Maria de Abreu / Jair Amorim)
03 – Foi Você (Luis Bonfá)
04 – Inútil Paisagem (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
05 – Você Não Sabe Amar (Dorival Caymmi / Carlos Guinle / Hugo Lima)
06 – Meu Sonho (Luis Bonfá)
07 – A Saudade Mata a Gente (João de Barro / Antônio Almeida)
08 – Não Encontro Maria (Berimbau)
09 – Meu Êrro (Luis Bittencourt / Gilberto Milfont)

Everybody knows that one of the best Brazilian music blogs, Unbreakable Microgrooves, has gone on a big hiatus. I spoke with Simon Boutman, which is the owner and maintainer of Microgrooves and we agree to make posts at Loronix of some albums that are not available there. I think this is an excellent idea and we will start with a recommendation from Simon Boutman, by the way, a really nice recommendation.

This is Dick Farney – Dick Farney Show (1961), for RGE. You will always find links to the original Microgrooves post, here. Dick Farney Show is his first LP from RGE, released just before Dick Farney made his move to Sao Paulo in the early 60’s. The legendary Maestro Enrico Simonetti arranges Dick Farney Show. Self-explanatory, what else can go wrong when you have Dick Farney and Maestro Simonetti together? Thanks Simon for open this new channel between our websites and communities. Tracks include:

I was really happy when I found this album that I had only a copy sent by a friend on MP3s files. Now I can say that I’m a happy owner of the original LP issue on a very good quality, almost not played before. It is also a pleasure to share another Dick Farney album, by the way, one of the greatest albums he made.

Dick Farney has been surprising many Jazz fans around the world that are tuned at Loronix. I have received more than a few emails from friends outside of Brazil sending greetings for discovering Dick Farney. I said it before and I want to say it again, Dick Farney and Lucio Alves where favorites of many renowned artists that emerged from the Bossa Nova age, such as Antonio Carlos Jobim and others. I’m making available a picture found at Rui Castro’s Bossa Nova book of a wallet from a member of the legendary Sinatra-Farney Fan Club, just to give you an idea of how important was Dick Farney.

This is Dick Farney – Penumbra Romance (1971), for London. We can say that Penumbra Romance is between the singer and the pianist, since Dick Farney Trio accompanies Dick Farney, which are Dick Farney (piano), Toninho (drums) and Saba (bass). The song Teresa da Praia has the participation of Lucio Alves as a special guest and worth entire record. Tracks include:

I was not planning to show friends another Dick Farney today. I was pretty tired and decided to take a nap one hour ago listening this album. It is beautiful. I never heard this Dick Farney, recommended by cvllos a couple of days ago. So I decided to make it, since I want to write about it with the same feelings and good vibrations I had in the last 35 minutes while listening.

This is Dick Farney – Um Piano ao Cair da Tarde (1974), for Odeon, featuring Dick Farney and piano, only, performing a repertoire of American standards. What can I say? Once again, self-explanatory. Everything works fine with this instrumental Dick Farney album, followed by Um Piano ao Cair da Tarde Vol. 2, that I’m looking for months. Additionally, a music video is included with Dick Farney at one of his most successful interpretations, Alguem Como Tu (Jose Maria de Abreu / Jair Amorim). Dick Farney is really essential. Tracks include:

01 – Tenderly (J. Lawrence / W. Gross)
02 – As Time Goes By (H. Hupfeld)
03 – The Man I Love (Ira Gershwin / George Gershwin)
04 – All Te Things You Are (Kern / O. Hammerstein II)
05 – The More I See You (H. Warren / M. Gordon)
06 – I’m Gettin’ Sentimental Over You (Bassman / Washington)
07 – Moonglow (W. Hudson / De Lange / I. Mills)
08 – Laura (J. Mercer / D. Raksin)
09 – Over The Rainbow (Harold Arlen / E. J. Harburg)
10 – What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life (Michel Legrand / A. Bergman / M. Bergman)
11 – Misty (Errol Garner / J. Burke)
12 – The Shadow Of Your Smile (J. Mandel / Paul Francis Webster)
13 – Here’s That Rainy Day (J. Burke / J. Van Heusen)

Quanto ao vídeo, encontrei duas versões de “Alguém como tu” com o Dick Farney no Youtube. Seguem as duas. De acordo com o bOssas nOvas, a postada originalmente pelo Zeca foi a segunda.

I cannot remember how many albums by Dick Farney showing his “singing side” are already available at Loronix. Perhaps without noticing, I’ve been picking Dick Farney instrumental side more frequently. This nice LP comes to fulfill this gap, showing Dick Farney singing on a very reduced accompaniment by his own piano and a small combo. Let’s see how it works.

This is Dick Farney – Dick Farney (1973) for Odeon. Little is know about this album recording session that shows Farney singing as a performing on a nightclub. I’m a big fan of Dick Farney and perhaps not the right guy to describe this album, beautiful and with a adequate touch of sadness on his singing and piano playing. What you see at this nice cover is exactly what you get, a great opportunity for those who wants to get along with his art of singing. Tracks include:

01 – Nick Bar (José Vasconcelos)
02 – Sempre Teu (José Maria de Abreu / Jair Amorim)
03 – Ser Ou Não Ser (José Maria de Abreu / Alberto Ribeiro)
04 – Embraceable You (George Gershwin / Ira Gershwin)
05 – Esquece (Gilberto Milfont)
06 – Fotografia (Tom Jobim)
07 – Somos Dois (Armando Cavalcanti / Klécius Caldas / Luis Antônio)
08 – Meu Rio de Janeiro (Nelson Trigueiro / Oscar Bellandi)
09 – The Lady Is a Tramp (L. Hart / R. Rodgers)
10 – Ranchinho de Palha (Luis Bonfá)
11 – Sem Esse Céu (Luis Bonfá)
12 – Ela Foi Embora (Oscar Bellandi / Djalma Ferreira)

Here we go again with this amazing record that deserves the status of the “closing post” of the day. However, it always happen, I look at this cover late at night and I fell disturbed and afraid, so let’s make it earlier, a wonderful LP showing the jazz pianist side of this great artist.

This is Dick Farney Trio – 5 Anos de Jazz (1977), for London, recorded live. I don’t know where this LP was record, maybe on a small place taking in consideration the number of hands clapping. I spoke with Caetano in Sao Paulo about this LP and he strongly recommends, Caetano does not use to be wrong. Dick Farney Trio is Dick Farney (piano), Saba (bass) and Toninho (drums). I’m showing a video originally posted on YouTube by the great Loronixer Paulo Bitencourt. You can visit his website at http://www.bitencourt.net. As Paulo said, this is a late Dick Farney and his voice is not on his best, he sings Copacabana and I strongly recommend that you watch it.

Tracks include:

01. Brandenburg Gate (Dave Brubeck)
02. Autumn Leaves (Les Feuilles Mortes) (Kosma / J. Prevert / Mercer)
03. We’ll Be Together Again (Fischer / Laine)
04. Besame Mucho (Consuelo Velasquez)
05. Three To Get Ready (Dave Brubeck)
06. Our Love Is Here To Stay (Ira Gershwin / George Gershwin)

Here is another Dick Farney LP at Loronix. It is amazing how Dick Farney is getting popular here, not by his singing, but for his piano playing. Several friends write me really pleased when they realize that Dick Farney is not only a singer, also a top-notch jazz pianist. This whole LP is from the piano side of Dick Farney. I will show you.

This is Dick Farney – Dick Farney Jazz (1962), for RGE, kindly provided by Caetano to Loronixers. This LP had an reissue in CD, 1994, going out of print later on. Caetano shares with us the CD edition, so you will have a high quality sound with no scratches from the old LPs.

Dick Farney has the accompaniment of great musicians on an early stage of their carrers. Claudio Slon plays drums; the third from left to right, just arrived from Argentina, his birth land. If Slon looks familiar, you are probably remembering an Astrud Gilberto cover artwork, A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness. Unfortunately Claudio has passed a few years ago, in 2002. The sax player is the legendary Hector Costita, also from Argentina. Costita is a well-known artist to many Loronixers who had alread the chance to reach Costita’s earlier releases. The bass player is Mario Algusto Monteiro da Silva. Tracks include:

01 – Swanee RiverR (S. Foster)
02 – These Foolish Things (Marvel Strachey)
03 – Rge Blues (Dick Farney)
04 – Improviso Nº 1 (Dick Farney)
05 – Georgia On My Mind (S. Gorrel / H. Carmichael)
06 – Tangerine (Mercer / Schertzinger)
07 – Improviso Nº 2 (Dick Farney)

Perhaps today is the day zecalouro is posting to Loronixers his mega-rare releases. Jam Session das Folhas – Dick Farney e Booker Pittman (1961) is very rare vinyl collectors item.

This LP was recorded live in the end of 1960 at the auditorium of a Brazilian newspaper, Folha de Sao Paulo. As zecalouro told before, Dick Farney was an outstanding singer and an awesome pianist who contributed decisively to the renovation of Brazilian popular music, incorporating jazz harmonies and style.

Dick was at the piano on all tracks, accompanied by Heraldo do Monte (guitar), Luiz Chaves (bass), Paulinho (drums) among others. Booker plays sax and sings on some tracks.

Saturday night, zecaloura at home – in fact, making noise to get me out of Loronix -, dinner and glass of wine… A Great plan, that never goes wrong if you have an old and good Dick Farney playing…

Dick Farney was an outstanding singer, instrumentalist and composer who contributed decisively to the renovation of Brazilian popular music with the incorporation of jazz harmonies and style. Farney had hits in Brazil that announced the soon-to-be bossa nova genre, such as “Copacabana” and “Teresa da Praia”.

In 1954, Farney started his association with Tom Jobim, announcing the forthcoming Bossa Nova times; in that year, “Teresa da Praia” (Tom Jobim/Billy Blanco) became a huge hit, interpreted by Farney and Lúcio Alves.
