Doces Bárbaros, Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil & Maria Bethânia - Doces Bárbaros

I have a nice connection with this album and I’m glad it is back to Loronix again. The first time it was made available, it lasts less than 24 hours. I made it by mistake, a few copies were already being sold by an on-line store and now it has gone definitively out of print, which is a shame, this is a classic. As I said, this album was important for my background as an amateur musician and also to drag my attention to Brazilian music and the four giants that share the role of main performer, the tropicalia legends Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa and Caetano’s sister Maria Bethania. Let’s see.

This is Doces Barbaros – Doces Barbaros (1976), for Philips, according with many reviews I read today, this is one of the nicest Brazilian popular music albums recorded in the 70’s. The group and the concert were assembled to celebrate 10 years of their artistic career. I also learn something that I did not know today, a DVD was released with original footage of these concerts as a documentary featuring backstage scenes and live performances. Meanwhile, let’s stay with this double album, in the spirit of Carmen Miranda Centennial. Tracks include:

Rita Lee & Gilberto Gil - Refestança

Hello, good evening! I’m having a bad time with my notebook. I use Microsoft Windows and since yesterday, I cannot reach the explorer file manager interface, the taskbar, which is that useful lower bar used to switch between opened applications and the start menu. Sorry for using this space for this kind of moaning, but I think I’m losing this battle this time. Perhaps a computer virus has got me. I don’t know. A simple task like opening a word processor is a great effort. Anyway, if someone has the solution for this problem, please get in touch.

Sometimes your state of mind influences the music made available at Loronix, and this post is exactly the case. It has a lot of energy and an anthological performance by two very important artists, one of them being released for the first time at Loronix. Let’s see.

This is Gilberto Gil & Rita Lee – Refestanca (1977), for Som Livre, featuring Gilberto Gil, an artist that does not need explanation and Rita Lee, the well known Os Mutantes vocalist. Refestanca is a very well recorded live concert, probably Gilberto Gil’s concert with Rita Lee as the invited artist. Gilberto Gil brings his whole band, Refestanca, also the album title and the opening and closing track. Rita Lee also brings her band at that time, Tutti Fruti, which is all about Rock and Roll. The outcome is very nice, they mix their bands, making everything sounds confusion at the first hearing, but as soon as you get used, it is hard to ignore cuts like Ovelha Negra, Back in Bahia, Odara and Domingo no Parque, my selection to Loronix Preview Center. Tracks include:

Personnel

Gilberto Gil
(vocal, violao)
Rita Lee
(vocal)

Djalma Correa, Naila Skorpio
(percussion)
Cidinho Teixeira, Roberto de Carvalho
(keyboards)
Carlos Alberto Charlegre, Sergio Della Monica
(drums)
Lee Marcucci, Moacyr Albuquerque
(bass)
Lucia Turnbull, Willi
(vocal)
Luiz Sergio Carlini, Perinho Santana, Roberto de Carvalho
(guitar)

Track List

01 – Refestança (Rita Lee / Gilberto Gil) with Gilberto Gil & Rita Lee
02 – É Proibido Fumar (Roberto Carlos / Erasmo Carlos) with Gilberto Gil & Rita Lee
03 – Odara (Caetano Veloso) with Gilberto Gil
04 – Domingo no Parque (Gilberto Gil) with Gilberto Gil

Hello, good evening! I’m sure that everybody will miss Joyce at Loronix front page. Several comments are now there and I’m really glad when I read them a couple of hours ago. It confirms my writing findings, thanks to everybody who engage. Anyway, the show must go on and we need to move the show forward in style presenting a little record of a great artist featuring a well-known song. Let’s see.

This is Gilberto Gil – Single (1969), for Philips, with the blockbuster Aquele Abraco (Gilberto Gil), one of those tunes that makes you kick around the house dedicated to Joao Gilberto, Dorival Caymmi and Caetano Veloso. It has been a long time since I heard Aquele Abraco for the last time and after 40 years is as fresh as it was in 1969. Side B brings Oma Iao, which is all about Tropicalismo, full of experiments, guitars and short lyrics, just the opposite from Aquele Abraco. Tracks include:

01 – Aquele Abraco (Gilberto Gil)
02 – Oma Iao (Gilberto Gil)

VellosoBethaniaGil (1968)

Here we go on another nice album, courtesy of the great JOAO-SP and his package of LPs featuring so far Maysa, Os Demonios da Garoa, Quinteto Violado, Adoniran Barbosa, Radames Gnattali and Rafael Rabello, Paulinho Nogueira, Nara Leao & Roberto Menescal and Elis Regina with Zimbo Trio. There is more to come and we did not reach 50% of JOAO-SP albums. Let’s see another.
This is Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethania & Gilberto Gil – Velloso, Bethania, Gil (1968), for RCA. I did not have time to make the research needed to understand if this album is a compilation. However, I think that side A features a compilation with tracks taken from previous releases of Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethania and Gilberto Gil, while side B brings new material with Maria Bethania performing Noel Rosa repertoire. My perception is that JOAO-SE sent us two albums in one, being side B the one that I like most with Maria Bethania performing six gorgeous Noel Rosa tunes with her unique voice. Personnel listing was not credited by RCA. Tracks include:

01 – Cavaleiro (Caetano Veloso) with Caetano Veloso
02 – Roda (Gilberto Gil / Joao Augusto) with Gilberto Gil
03 – Samba em Paz (Caetano Veloso) with Caetano Veloso
04 – Viramundo (Gilberto Gil / Capinan) with Maria Bethania
05 – Procissao (Gilberto Gil) with Gilberto Gil
06 – Iemanja (Gilberto Gil / Othon Bastos) with Gilberto Gil
07 – Tres Apitos (Noel Rosa) with Maria Bethania
08 – Pra que Mentir (Noel Rosa) with Maria Bethania
09 – Feitio de Oracao (Noel Rosa) with Maria Bethania
10 – Ultimo Desejo (Noel Rosa) with Maria Bethania
11 – X do Problema (Noel Rosa) with Maria Bethania
12 – Silencio de um Minuto (Noel Rosa) with Maria Bethania

Joao Gilberto, Caetano Veloso e Gilberto Gil - Brasil (1981)

I’m feeling like a writer with a creative crisis to describe this beauty of an album. Perhaps my problem is to understand why this unusual and late Bossa Nova session featuring international musicians could result in such a solid album. Joao Gilberto has the control, playing the role of arranger and producer to work together with Tropicalia icons Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil to make this sublime record. This is an essential album that everybody should take for a listening and file as special on your Brazilian music affair.

This is Joao Gilberto, Caetano Veloso e Gilberto Gil – Brasil (1981), for WEA, a short session with six songs featuring Joao Gilberto guitar, the voices of Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and a special participation of Maria Bethania on track 04 – No Tabuleiro da Baiana. Personnel listing brings the acclaimed pianist and arranger Clare Fischer and Paulinho da Costa, the only Brazilian musician besides Joao Gilberto. Tracks include:

Personnel

Joao Gilberto
(voice, violao, arrangements)
Clare Fischer, Michael Boddicker, Milcho Leviev
(keyboards)
Jim Hughart
(bass)
Joe Carrero
(drums)
Paulinho da Costa
(percussion)
Johnny Mandel
(arrangements)

Track List

01 – Aquarela do Brasil (Ary Barroso)
02 – Disse Alguém (All Of Me) (Simons / Marks / Vrs. Haroldo Barbosa)
03 – Bahia Com H (Denis Brean)
04 – No Tabuleiro da Baiana (Ary Barroso) with Maria Bethânia

Gilberto Gil – Gilberto Gil (1968)

This is truly amazing, Gilberto Gil second LP recorded in the crazy year of 1968 for Philips, featuring Os Mutantes and arrangements by Maestro Rogerio Duprat. This is *the* self-explanatory release. The Beatles – Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (1968), had a great influence on me and probably on Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso as you can see by this fantastic cover artwork, with references to The Beatles cover. I hope Mr. Gil will be pleased to see his album here. Loronixers will be amazed by this release. Let’s see.

This is Gilberto Gil – Gilberto Gil (1968), for Philips. Little is known about musicians in this session, except by the participation of Os Mutantes, giving some 60’s rock influences to overall experience. Maestro Rogerio Duprat orchestrations, blended with Os Mutantes electric guitars is worth checking. The repertoire features well-known Gilberto Gil songs with highlights to Procissao, Domingo no Parque, Ela Falava Nisso Todo Dia, among others. I urge Loronixers to feedback this release, so we can evaluate the response to late 60’s Tropicalia releases. Tracks include:

01 – Frevo Rasgado (Gilberto Gil / Bruno Ferreira)
02 – Coragem Pra Suportar (Gilberto Gil)
03 – Domingou (Gilberto Gil / Torquato Neto)
04 – Marginália II (Gilberto Gil / Torquato Neto)
05 – Pega a Voga Cabeludo (Gilberto Gil / Juan Arcon)
06 – Ele Falava Nisso Todo Dia (Gilberto Gil)
07 – Procissão (Gilberto Gil)
08 – Luzia Luluza (Gilberto Gil)
09 – Pé da Roseira (Gilberto Gil)
10 – Domingo no Parque (Gilberto Gil)
