Hello, Good Evening! When I saw this album in the middle of others contributions given by the great Caetano Rodrigues, I thought it was a compilation of previous releases by Henry Mancini with some Bossa Nova style. I was wrong. As Musicas de Henry Mancini em Bossa Nova brings brand new material, twelve instrumental renditions of Henry Mancini essential tunes performed as Bossa Nova.

This is As Musicas de Henry Mancini em Bossa Nova (no date), for CID, part of a series of instrumental albums, each one an homage to a given artist, so far, I could track equivalents for Ary Barroso and Dorival Caymmi, there are probably others. Guess who is behind this initiative? Durval Ferreira, credited as artistic and musical director. Personnel is not credit and the music is performed by a quartet with keyboards, bass, guitar and drums. Tracks include:

01 – Champagne and Quail
02 – Charade
03 – Days of Wine and Roses
04 – Royal Blue
05 – Megeve
06 – Moon River
07 – Sally’s Tomato
08 – Breakfast at Tiffany’s
09 – Night Side
10 – Latin Snowfall
11 – Mr. Lucky
12 – Dreamsville

Caetano Rodrigues has a special care on dates, I can say he is my personal special dates consultant. He made a phone call today to remind me of a special date, really special by the way, today, 14th June, landmarks the passing of the great Maestro Henry Mancini 14 years ago. We take a lot of time thinking on a homage to Henry Mancini, while the solution was in front of us and already available at Loronix, one of our favorite records, a constellation of Brazilian music on studio making jazzy renditions of Henry Mancini repertoire. This is what I consider an essential.

This is Mancini Tambem e Samba (1962) for Mocambo. I don’t know what is the story behind this recording session, seems to me that these guys made a fan tribute to Henry Mancini, taking the studio by assault to record these twelve breathtaking Henry Mancini songs on top of Jazz and Samba rhythms.
