Joao Roberto Kelly (1974)

I spent a great time with Tranka last Friday, he told me that Joao Roberto Kelly is celebrating this month 50th years of a great artist career dedicated to Brazilian music. Let’s see.

Hello, Good Evening! Saturday is Samba at Loronix and I have been receiving only good thoughts from Loronixers regarding this initiative. Samba fans are very knowledgeable and they like to share, write comments and discuss Samba. I have been learning a lot with our great Samba friends. This also brings a great responsibility to make nice releases and I think this is a flawless one. Let’s see.

This is Joao Roberto Kelly e Os Pagodeiros Nota 10 – Um Piano Sobe o Morro (1973), for Tapecar. I never heard about Os Pagodeiros Nota 10 before and I think they did not make solo releases; perhaps they are part of Joao Roberto Kelly TV Show in the 70’s as support band. Um Piano Sobe o Morro has the TV show atmosphere, with Joao Roberto Kelly dedicating songs and also making comments on songwriters. Tracks include:

01 – Ninguém Tasca (O Gavião) (Mário Pereira / João Quadrado)
02 – Tem Capoeira (É Bom Segurar) (Batista da Mangueira)
03 – Um Sambinha Pra Sinhô (João Roberto Kelly)
04 – Carteiro do Morro (Paulo Cézar Beltrão)
05 – Rancho da Praça Onze (João Roberto Kelly / Chico Anísio)
06 – À Procura de Um Ninho (Geraldo Barbosa / F. Terra)
07 – Moreninha da Vila (João Roberto Kelly)
08 – Som Primeiro (Paulo Cézar Beltrão / Jair Barbosa)
09 – As Dez Mais (Ciro de Souza / Braga Filho)
10 – Nordeste Seu Povo Seu Canto e Sua Glória (Wilson Diabo / Maneco / Heitor)
11 – Papel Crepom (Maria Luisa Imperial / Raul Prata)
12 – Fossa (Jurandir / João Quadrado / Mário Pereira)

.

I Loronix Singles Festival – Oswaldo Nunes & The Pop’s, Eva & Joao Roberto Kelly

This is the first edition of Loronix Singles Festival, just to save our time and make several singles accessible from a single (sorry!) download package. First edition has 3 artists, as follows:

Oswaldo Nunes & The Pop’s (1968), for Equipe. Great surprise, I never saw an Equipe single before and in spite of a non-specific cover artwork, this one looks modern and truly beautiful. Oswaldo Nunes & The Pop’s delivers something my good friends identify as Samba Rock, something really hard to define with my limited knowledge. Tracks include:

01 – Segura Esse Samba Ogunhe
02 – Eu Chorei

Eva (1969), for Copacabana, brings another nice cover, although is just the opposite from Equipe. Perhaps this cover was even considered antique in 1969, but it is truly beautiful and matches perfect with the label design in the middle. Tracks include:

01 – Cantiga por Luciana
02 – Meu Mundo

Joao Roberto Kelly – Joao Roberto Kelly (1980), for Copacabana, a very recent single taking in consideration the previous ones. We have a different Joao Roberto Kelly this time, performing as a romantic singer and making a wonderful job. Tracks include:

01 – Mistura
02 – A Solidao Chegou

.

Não tinha esses compactos. Porém, graças aos amigos Amilcar e Martoni, eles podem ser buscados na Rádio Forma e Elenco.

Joao Roberto Kelly e Luiz Reis – Samba a Quatro Maos (1964)

Publicado em: Saturday, January 27, 2007 by zecalouro

When I took this LP for a hearing I did not realize how good it was. Like the Jazzman uses to say, do not walk to it, run. This is an enjoyable set of two pianists playing and singing Samba. People say that zecalouro uses to say that all records are Samba records while they are Bossa Nova, etc. Forgive-me if I’m wrong, but this LP is a Samba LP by definition.

This is Joao Roberto Kelly and Luiz Reis – Samba em Quatro Maos (1964), for RCA. Joao Roberto Kelly and Luiz Reis are pianists and composers and this is the difference on this LP that seams that was recorded on a very relaxed session with smiles on the face of both. I have been asking everybody about this LP and I could only hear people saying that it is a solid release, from start to end, don’t miss it and join this selected club. Tracks include:

01 – Cara de Pau (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
02 – Faço Um Lê-lelê (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis) — Gamação (João Roberto Kelly)
03 – Samba de Balanço (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis) — Pirata da Calçada (João Roberto Kelly)
04 – Leilão (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis) — Brotinho Bossa Nova (João Roberto Kelly)
05 – Lá Vou Eu (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
06 – Samba de Teleco-teco (João Roberto Kelly) — Desfolhando a Margarida (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
07 – Só Vou de Balanço (João Roberto Kelly)
08 – Boato (João Roberto Kelly) — Lamento Bibop (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
09 – Ciuminho (João Roberto Kelly)
10 – Sua Boca É Um Perigo (João Roberto Kelly) — Samba do Trouxa (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
11 – Palhaçada (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis) — Zé da Conceição (João Roberto Kelly)
12 – Canequinho (Aloísio Silva Araújo / Luis Reis)

If you were living in Brazil during the 70’s, you will probably remember this samba show aired every Saturday by Joao Roberto Kelly, Rio da Samba. I’m not sure when it started and how long it lasts, but it is something that is part of that decade to me.

Joao Roberto Kelly is a great artist and this enterprise was really amazing, some sort of freak samba show that I could never watch something similar to it. Perhaps Brazilians remembers Kelly by this show, not for the great composer he is.

Anyway, this is Joao Roberto Kelly – Joao Roberto Kelly Apresenta Rio da Samba (1977), another fine release by the hands of the great and obscure contributor Mr. X. Even zecalouro does not have a clue of Mr. X. real identity and this is part of the fun to receive his contributions that are many, with several ones in a row waiting.

The cover can give you the idea of the show “spirit”. Have a try! Special attention to track 01 – Danca do Bole Bole (available by a 30s sample), which was the show theme. Tracks include:

Sorry, I forgot to say that this LP is great and has several guests, as follows: Conjunto Nosso Samba, Paulinho da Viola, Jurema, Clementina de Jesus, Lincoln, Joao Nogueira, Luiz Ayrao, Delcio Carvalho, Walter Rosa, Nadinho da Ilha and Roberto Ribeiro.

01 – Dança do Bole Bole (João Roberto Kelly)
02 – Seu Diretor (Neném / Pintado)
03 – Perdoa (Paulinho da Viola)
04 – Madame Satã (Totonho / Paulinho Resende)
05 – Marinheiro Só (Caetano Veloso)
06 – A Encruzilhada (Sônia Amaral / Bentana)
07 – Follies Bergere (João Roberto Kelly)
08 – Pimenta no Vatapá (João Nogueira / Cláudio Jorge)
09 – O Que Que Há Portela (Tiãozinho Poeta)
10 – Só Chora Quem Ama (Wilson Moreira / Nei Lopes)
11 – Pernambuco o Leão do Norte (Silas de Oliveira)
12 – Mormaço (João Roberto Kelly)
