Hello, good evening! Yet another tiny record from Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira collection made available at Loronix, once again, another really worth checking release. For those who do not know this collection, Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira was published in 48 issues by Editora Abril Cultural between the years 1970 and 1972. Each issue includes a magazine with the size of a 10″ record and a 10″ record with a summary of the featured artist. It is perfect if you want get along with an artist on a single hearing. Let’s see.

This is Johnny Alf – Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira – 43 (1972), for Abril Cultural, featuring the Bossa Nova giant Johnny Alf performing his compositions and other artists performing Johnny Alf music. I said the collection is great, but the thing I like most is the magazine featuring pictures that are not easy to find, such as the one I’m making available below.

I don’t have muscles to transfer the magazine to digital format. My apologies. Perhaps one day I can have someone else working at Loronix. Tracks include:

Johnny Alf - Olhos Negros

Johnny Alf - Olhos Negros_2

Hello, good evening! I have good news to tell you. Johnny Alf, after a long period of serious health problems, takes over his activities and even made rehearsals with his quintet, just a month before his 79th anniversary. I read this new today with a great pleasure. Although very underestimated, Johnny Alf is a very important musician. He introduced a new way of singing and playing many years before the creation of Bossa Nova, influencing artists such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Marcos Valle, Carlos Lyra among many others. This is Loronix homage to this great musician. Let’s see.

This is Johnny Alf – Olhos Negros (1990), for RCA, featuring Johnny Alf music and Johnny Alf singing and playing piano in all tracks. Olhos Negros was recorded after a long hiatus of 10 years and it is a beautiful celebration of Johnny Alf music. Each track has a special guest, performing with Johnny Alf on duets. It was very hard to decide Loronix Preview Center track and I decided to deliver the opening track with Johnny Alf and Gal Costa performing Ilusao a Toa. Tracks include:

The Special Guests

Hello, good evening! If you consider that Elizeth Cardoso – Cancao do Amor Demais (1958) landmarks the birth of Bossa Nova, this is the year where Bossa Nova celebrates its 50th anniversary. Cancao do Amor Demais features for the first time Joao Gilberto’s violao beat on tracks Chega de Saudade and Outra Vez. I have been very busy this year and my perception is that we do not have so far a consistent activity devoted to this great event. Additionally, I can’t remember any album released to celebrate Bossa Nova 50 years. That’s why I’m making available this album, a very well done compilation celebrating Bossa Nova 30 years, featuring one of its main characters, Johnny Alf. Let’s see.

This is Johnny Alf – O Que e Amar (1988), for RCA. Finally, Johnny Alf is back to Loronix. His last solo album was made available in June 2007, it is a long time and it is important that everybody knows Johnny Alf, a true genius and unbelievable underestimated. He was the one that introduced to many other renowned artists a new way of singing, playing and performing several years before the birth of Bossa Nova. It is time to celebrate Bossa Nova and celebrate Johnny Alf. Tracks include:

01 – Rapaz de Bem (Johnny Alf)
02 – Ilusão à Toa (Johnny Alf)
03 – Céu e Mar (Johnny Alf)
04 – Penso Em Você (Fernando Lobo / Paulo Soledade)
05 – Bondinho Pão de Açúcar (Armando Cavalcante / Victor Freire)
06 – Podem Falar (Johnny Alf)
07 – Eu e a Brisa (Johnny Alf)
08 – O Que É Amar (Johnny Alf)

This is to address the request made by GoodGroove a couple of weeks ago, Johnny Alf, a key figure on Bossa Nova story, active since the early 50’s — as we confirm here at Loronix with the fantastic contribution of Mr. E., Mary Goncalves – Convite ao Romance (1952) — and unfortunately highly underestimated.

This is Johnny Alf – Desbunde Total (1978), for Chantecler, late work of Johnny Alf with the help of Joao Donato at arrangements. All compositions written by Johnny Alf, most of them unknown, Johnny Alf sings and plays the piano. Desbunde Total is the last Johnny Alf LP in the 70’s, he cross the whole 80’s with no recording activity, being back in the 90’s with Olhos Negros, gone out of print and never reissued again with Johnny Alf making duets with several guests based on a repertoire of his greatest hits. I’m tracking this one down. Tracks include:

01 – Oxum (Johnny Alf)
02 – Passe Livre (Armando Cavalcanti / Victor Freire)
03 – Sidarta (Johnny Alf)
04 – Orgulho de Bom Sambista (Johnny Alf)
05 – Que Volte a Tristeza (Johnny Alf)
06 – Eu Pretendo Não Chorar (Johnny Alf)
07 – Desbunde Total (Johnny Alf)
08 – Com Voz de Plenitude (Johnny Alf / Édison Penha)
09 – Anunciação (Johnny Alf)
10 – Para Não Falar de Amor (Paulo Miranda / Buião)
11 – Paz de Um Grande Amor (Johnny Alf)
12 – Olhaí (Johnny Alf)

Here we go again with another Caetano Rodrigues contribution, this time different, since Caetano gave this record as a gift on my last trip to Sao Paulo. Thanks Caetano. However, simplicity is not a word on Caetano’s dictionary. Caetano said to let it ready and wait for further instructions. That’s what I did, like a soldier and the instructions had just arrived here: release at 1 Million Hits day. Very wise of Caetano, 5 artists together on a single album is really a celebration.

This is Juntos! (1988), for Phonodisc, featuring Edu Lobo, Johnny Alf, Taiguara, Pery Ribeiro and Sergio Ricardo. I just spoke with Caetano about Juntos! and we agreed that some tracks were released only at this album and never were made available on regular releases by these artists. Any help to realize which are the songs never released on regular albums is really appreciated. Tracks include:

01 – O Nosso Olhar – SERGIO RICARDO
02 – Uma Vez um Caso – EDU LOBO
03 – O Amor da Justica – TAIGUARA
04 – Chega de Saudade – PERY RIBEIRO
05 – Orgulho de Bom Sambista – JOHNNY ALF
06 – Valsinha – PERY RIBEIRO
07 – Gingando Dobrado – EDU LOBO
08 – Paz de um Grande Amor – JOHNNY ALF
09 – Guarania Guarani – TAIGUARA
10 – Do Lago a Cachoeira – SERGIO RICARDO

I have been trying to find a reason for taken a year to show this album to Loronixers, a important album to everybody who wants to know more about early Bossa Nova develops by an early Bossa Nova figure, the great Johnny Alf. Perhaps I’m getting blink by the way, this cover looks very much like Compact 33 by Leny Andrade and Tamba Trio and maybe I was taken it by mistake as a driven by cover artwork parrot I am.

This is Johnny Alf – Rapaz de Bem (1961), for RCA Victor, Johnny Alf debut LP. Johnny Alf was an active musician since the early 50’s and could only make this first LP in 1961. Little is known about this LP, however, the tireless Maria Luiza Kfouri from Discos do Brasil( identified Maestro Nelsinho as arranger and also trombonist on some tracks, which is also a guarantee of nice arrangements and trombone playing as Nelsinho uses to make on everything he takes part. Tracks include:

01 – Rapaz de Bem (Johnny Alf)
02 – Escuta (Johnny Alf)
03 – Feitiçaria (Custódio Mesquita / Evaldo Ruy)
04 – Fuga (Durval Ferreira)
05 – Tema Sem Palavras (Maurício Einhorn / Durval Ferreira)
06 – Penso Em Você (Fernando Lobo / Paulo Soledade)
07 – O Que É Amar (Johnny Alf)
08 – Fim de Semana Em Eldorado (Johnny Alf)
09 – Que Vou Dizer Eu (Victor Freire / Klécius Caldas)
10 – Ilusão à Toa (Johnny Alf)
11 – Tudo Distante de Mim (Johnny Alf)
12 – Vem (Johnny Alf)

This is Johnny Alf – Rapaz de Bem (1961), at Loronix.  Hope uEnjoy!

This is one of several contributions made today by tcisalpino, I think his place is inside an Internet Service Provider with plenty upload bandwidth. Anyway, among tcisalpino picks I found this record, one of those that I was hunting for to address an advice from Mr. G., zecalouro official consultant for Brazilian music from the 70’s. Let’s check Mr. G. choice and tcisalpino contribution, by the way, all made using 320Kbps.

This is Johnny Alf – Nos (1974), for Odeon, featuring Wagner Tiso, Gilberto Gil, Egberto Gismonti, Paulo Moura, among others. It is amazing that this LP has gone out of print so early since it’s last reissue in 2004. This set is pretty different from earlier Johnny Alf Bossa Nova works, sounding as the 70’s, with a groovy atmosphere. I’m sure that tomorrow morning Mr. G. will give additional details as a complement. Thank once again for this one tcisalpino. Tracks include:

01 – Saudações (Egberto Gismonti – Paulo César Pinheiro) with Egberto Gismonti (acoustic guitar, arrangements
02 – O que é amar (Johnny Alf) with Egberto Gismonti (arrangements)
03 – Um gosto de fim (Ivan Lins – Ronaldo Monteiro) with Ivan Lins (piano, arrangements)
04 – Acorda Ulysses (Johnny Alf) with Egberto Gismonti (arrangements)
05 – Músico Simples (Gilberto Gil) with Gilberto Gil (acoustic guitar) and Paulo Moura (flute)
06 – Nós (Johnny Alf) with Wagner Tiso (arrangements) and Paulo Moura (sax)
07 – Outros Povos (Milton Nascimento – Márcio Borges) with Wagner Tiso (arrangements)
08 – Plenúlio (Johnny Alf) with Egberto Gismonti (arrangements)
09 – É um cravo e tem espinho (Gonzaga Jr)
10 – Um tema p´ro Simon (Johnny Alf) with Paulo Moura (arrangements)

Hello, Good Night! It has been a long time since the last Johnny Alf LP was made available to Loronixers. Johnny Alf has a great importance to the beginning of Bossa Nova, influencing several renowned artists with his unique piano playing style. Our new friend G Picanco, wrote today some nice stories about him on comments making zecalouro remembers Johnny Alf, so underrated by the establishment and even by the fans of Bossa Nova. Thanks G Picanco for taking Johnny Alf back to the agenda.

This is Johnny Alf – Diagonal (1964), for RCA, the second Johnny Alf LP. I have to admit that I never had the chance to hear Diagonal and now I’m embarrassed, it is a Bossa Nova classic that any serious fan cannot leave behind. Personnel listing is also breathtaking. Tracks include:

Celso Murilo
Santos, Maurilio, Hamilton, Julinho and Wagner
Ze Bodega, Aurino, Macaxeira and Norato
Luis Marinho
Edison Machado

Everybody says that any Johnny Alf record is sophisticated, passionate and sincere. This 1966 LP is one that demonstrates this true statement. Johnny sings and plays his revolutionary piano on 12 tracks made by him and other composers.

There are not credited participations of Hermeto Pascoal (flute) and Airto Moreira (drums). Johnny Alf is one of Brazilian Bossa Nova pionners. Johnny took part in almost 50 albums from several different artists, but has recorded only 9 solo albums on his career.

Let’s celebrate Johnny Alf with this awaited Loronix release: Johnny Alf – Eu e a Brisa (1966).

Johnny Alf – Ele é Johnny Alf (1971)

Johnny Alf is one of the former Brazilian composers to fuse Jazz into Brazilian music. His strong Jazz accent made him be honored as one of Bossa Nova founders, although he never received the correct credits and recognition by the mainstream.

Alf is the Master of the altered chords and complex harmonies. Tom Jobim and Oscar de Castro Neves, for instance, were always close to the first Johnny Alf gigs in Rio de Janeiro to learn his new style of playing.

This is one of his best albums with a collection of such great standards and delicious jazz swinging sambas Alf classics. The album also features Helio Delmiro on acoustic guitar and the Vocal Trio Os Tres Morais.
