Newton Mendonça - Em Cada Estrela Uma Canção

Hello, good evening! I will try to bring back two important posts to Loronix today (I hope I can made the second!), starting with one of the most awesome contribution made by a very good friend, the influential Bossa Nova collector Caetano Rodrigues. This is a tribute album to Newton Mendonca, a truly important Brazilian musician that passed away very early, but left a strong contribution to Brazilian popular music. I will keep my original writing made at August 2007. Let’s see.

> original post:

It is very hard to start writing for such post. This was supposed to be first today and I had to postpone guaranteeing a respectful homage to Newton Mendonca, the great musician and songwriter that left us very early. Newton Mendonça left us in 1960 with the very young age of 33. He was childhood friend and partner of Antonio Carlos Jobim and the author of some of the most important Bossa Nova songs, such as: Desafinado, Foi a Noite, Samba de Uma Nota So, Meditacao, So Saudade, among others. Caetano Rodrigues sent this fantastic Copacabana label tribute album that I did not known the existence and I’m very proud to make it available on this respectful homage to Newton Mendonca.

This is Em Cada Estrela uma Cancao (1961), for Copacabana, featuring Ernani Filho, Marisa Gata Mansa and Carminha Mascarenhas renditions to Newton Mendonca compositions. Really beautiful tribute álbum with Orchestra conducted by Maestro Pachequinho backing Ernani Filho and Marisa Gata Mansa. Carminha Mascarenhas has “Conjunto” accompaniment. A constellation of musicians performs in this session. Personnel listing is available bellow, as well tracks. Tracks include:

Marisa Gata Mansa - Viagem

Hello, good evening! This is the mandatory and obligatory repost of the first Marisa Gata Mansa LP that I have the chance to make available at Loronix. Marisa Gata Mansa & Moacyr Silva - Convite a Musica

Hello, good evening! This was the third night that I try to make a fantastic contribution by Jorge Mello, and in the last minute I realize a missing information or a new detail that needs to be added and the plan is postponed to the next day. It is an important post featuring one of the artists that Jorge Mello most admires and everything should work with no mistakes. Anyway, I believe tomorrow is the big day.

Meanwhile, we will stay in good company with a mandatory update featuring an artist that certainly defines Loronix, Moacyr Silva, accompanying a singer appreciated by many friends, Marisa, on her debut LP for Copacabana label in 1958. Let’s see.

This is Marisa e Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto – Convite a Musica (1958), for Copacabana, Marisa debut LP, backed by Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto in all tracks. I said that Moacyr Silva defines Loronix for many reasons. Moacyr Silva is a gifted musician with a very important contribution to Brazilian music as producer of several albums. And since Loronix creation in 2006, I never had the chance to see one of Moacyr Silva career records available on CD. I would be very pleased to see Moacyr Silva reissued one day. Tracks include:

Edmundo Maciel
Hanestaldo Americo

Track List

Mariza - A Suave Mariza (1959)

Caetano Rodrigues music for tonight is being carefully prepared by our engineers, meanwhile, I want to show one of the albums that I was looking for many years, courtesy of a great friend and one of the nicest guys I had the chance to meet at Loronix, the legendary Mauro R. V. I told before and I want to say again, Mauro R. V. learned from scratch how to make vinyl transfers and just get some minor cosmetic advices of mine. He also used his own resources to buy a scanner, just to improve his contributions. I’m really glad that Mauro has now a scanner, this is one of the greatest albums cover I have ever seen. Let’s see.

This is Mariza – A Suave Mariza (1959), for Copacabana, featuring the Brazilian singer Mariza, later known as Marisa and finally as Marisa Gata Mansa, perhaps by the association with this fantastic cover with the cat. Marisa was a very close friend of Dolores Duran and one of the best performers of her repertoire. She started her career in the early 50’s, being also an important Bossa Nova singer, performing at Beco das Garrafas and other nightclubs. This is her debut LP after recording to earlier albums with Moacyr Silva. Marisa died very recently in 2003. Tracks include:

Netinho, Emilio
(sax alto)

Caetano Rodrigues will be amazing this Sunday morning when having breakfast checking what’s new at Loronix. I said to him that I gave up to make this album to Loronixers, due some technical problems with the music. However, this is a fantastic and rather unknown Marisa album and I had the help from friends to make the fixes I need. Thanks for this nice contribution Caetano.

This is Marisa – Little Club Apresenta Marisa (1961), for Copacabana, once again delivering a great cover artwork that makes you fell in the mood to travel back on time watch this concert at Little Club, which is the nightclub that Marisa performed before recording this album. The session is beautiful with Marisa backed up by a not credited trio. Marisa sings sweet, she whispers in your ear sometimes on a nice repertoire, based on Brazilian standards and some international songs. Tracks include:

01 – Chuva para molhar o sol (Édson Borges – Agostinho dos Santos)
02 – Croquemitufle (Gilbert Becaud)
03 – Onde Estava Eu (Armando Cavalcanti – Victor Freire)
04 – Ternura Antiga (Ribamar – Dolores Duran)
05 – Quando Vien La Sera (Rossi – Testa)
06 – Deixa o Nosso Amor (Normando – Ronaldo Boscoli)
07 – Noves Fora Zero (Tony Vestante)

It is cool to show singles and EPs to Loronixers. The format brings always the best picks of the artists and it is a good alternative for those who don’t want to face the long duration LP. In the other hand, there is no much to say about them, as short records, they are not conceptual. Anyway, let’s see the first out of series of singles and EPs scheduled for this week. I hope you like it; the feedback on Tamba was great.

This is Marisa – Marisa (1972), for Odeon as 7BD-1269 with four tracks. I could not check if all tracks were previously released or not on another format. Tracks include:

01 – Viagem (João de Aquino / Paulo César Pinheiro)
02 – Depois De Tanto Amor (Paulinho da Viola)
03 – Estiada (Ivor Lancellotti / Marco Antônio Pinheiro)
04 – Samba do Estácio (Jair Amorim / César Costa Filho)

Marisa & Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto – Convite a Musica Nr. 2 (1958)

Caetano Rodrigues will think I’m going nuts with this post, we spent almost an hour discussing alternatives to reach a different decision, but a last minute technical problem was identified and the agreed album needs to be postponed. I’m wondering if you think we are crazy and if you think we are crazy you are 100% correct, it is really insane to spend a lot of time to decided between gold and diamonds since all Caetano collection is great from the start to end. We love the work we do at Loronix and the time we spent on decision-making is on the benefit of everybody. Sorry Caetano, this busy parrot will settled a little down after our celebration.

This is Marisa & Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto – Convite a Musica Nr. 2 (1958), for Copacabana, the best of both words album blending instrumental tracks provided by the legendary Brazilian sax tenor Moacyr Silva and the renowned Brazilian singer Marisa, also known as Marisa Gata Mansa. Convite a Musica Nr. 2 follows Nr. 1, already available at Loronix and in my humble opinion is very much better than the first one.

I learned a lot of new things with this album, I didn’t know that Marisa was part of Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto, performing together on nightclubs, such as the legendary Vogue, a feel blocks away from my place. It is funny, I miss Vogue nightclub and I never had the chance of being there, and actually, I don’t think I was born when Vogue was opened for business. I also learned that Moacyr Silva was influenced by the American Jazz sax player Coleman Hawkins, at least is what Lucio Rangel says at liner notes. That’s it. Thanks Caetano for Moacyr Silva, Marisa and Conjunto, featuring Chaim Lewak, Maurilio Santos, Edmundo Maciel, Raul Gagliardi and Hanestaldo Americo. Tracks include:

PersonnelMoacyr Silva
(sax tenor)
Chaim Lewak
Maurilio Santos
Edmundo Maciel
Raul Gagliardi
Hanestaldo Americo

Track List

01 – Chega de Saudade (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes) – Marisa Gata Mansa
02 – Arrasta Pé (Maurício Santos) – Moacyr Silva
03 – Assim (Clóvis Santos) – Marisa Gata Mansa
04 – All The Way (Cahn / Van Heusen) – Moacyr Silva
05 – Quero-te Assim (Tito Madi) – Marisa Gata Mansa
06 – Mistura Fina (Luis Bandeira) – Moacyr Silva
07 – Onde Estará Meu Amor (Lina Pesce) – Marisa Gata Mansa
08 – Você Passou (Nazareno de Brito / Alcyr Pires Vermelho) – Moacyr Silva

Taking the advantage of the enormous success and feedback given to Caetano’s last RGE compilation O Melhor da Bossa, I will pick another one sent by the same and tireless Caetano Rodrigues. Now we go with ten Bossa Nova interpretations by 5 Brazilian female singers. Let’s see.

This is Cinco Estrelas Interpretam a Bossa Nova (1963), for Copacabana, featuring Elizeth Cardoso, Marisa, Carminha Mascarenhas, Morgana and Lucienne Franco. Perhaps I’m wrong, Copacabana label did not release much records like this, since this is the first Copacabana compilation I have seen so far. Anyway, really a nice treat to hear the ladies singing Bossa Nova and also hear for the first time the voice of Carminha Mascarenhas, never released before at Loronix. I don’t need to say that this is a really hard to find album provided by Caetano Rodrigues. Tracks include:

01 – Menino Travesso (Moacir Santos / Vinicius de Moraes) – ELIZETH CARDOSO
02 – Chora Tua Tristeza (Oscar Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini) – MARISA
03 – Ciúme Teu Ma (Walter / Joluz) – CARMINHA MASCARENHAS
04 – A Flor (Vera Brasil / De Rosa) – MORGANA
05 – Da Rosa Que Nasceu Nosso Amor (Baden Powell / Heloísa Setta) – LUCIENNE FRANCO
06 – Céu e Mar (Johnny Alf) – MARISA GATA MANSA
07 – Imenso Amor (Luis Bonfá / Maria Helena Toledo) – LUCIENNE FRANCO
08 – Cravo Vermelho (Pernambuco / Sergio Malta) – MORGANA
09 – Nós e o Mar (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli) – CARMINHA MASCARENHAS
10 – Seu Olhar (Laís Antunes) – ELIZETH CARDOSO

Marisa – Encontro de Amor (1976) with Terra Trio

Link na Internet Wayback Machine: Marisa – Encontro de Amor (1976) with Terra Trio
Publicado em: Tuesday, February 20, 2007

Strange coincidence, several albums available to be released have a black cover. I have been wondering how they were accumulated without knowing, but this is impossible, I like the black color, Loronix has a black background and all “black” LPs accumulated are solid. Anyway, let’s pick the first out of a series of black cover LPs.
This is Marisa – Encontro de Amor (1976), for Odeon, recorded live at Teatro da Galeria, Rio de Janeiro and featuring the accompaniment of Terra Trio, with Fernando (bass), Ricardo (drums) and Ze Maria (piano). This is probably an album unknown for many Loronix friends. I have been checking with some and it was surprising for everyone who I have mentioned about this LP. Nothing can go wrong when you have Marisa Gata Mansa and Terra Trio, including a tribute to Dolores Duran on track 04. Tracks include:
01 – Começaria Tudo Outra Vez (Gonzaguinha)
02 – Um Favor (Lupicínio Rodrigues)
03 – Não Adianta Chorar (Fernando Luis da Costa)
04 – Castigo (Dolores Duran) — Por Causa de Você (Dolores Duran / Tom Jobim) — Solidão (Dolores Duran) — A Noite do Meu Bem (Dolores Duran) – Dolores Duran Tribute
05 – Saudade Vai-te Embora (Julio de Souza)
06 – Cobras e Lagartos (Sueli Costa / Hermínio Bello de Carvalho)
07 – Sabiá Lá na Gaiola (Hervé Cordovil / Mário Vieira)
08 – Chuva Gente Carnaval (Ivor Lancellotti) Participação: Ivor Lancellotti
09 – Gota D’água (Chico Buarque)

Everybody will enjoy this record, such like zecalouro, another nice release sponsored by our great friend and Loronixer Caetano Rodrigues. This is Marisa – Marisa (196?), for Equipe. You will probably associate this LP with a same Equipe release with the cover bellow, which is the one that everybody knows. According with Caetano, this amazing green and robotic cover was issued first and it is very hard to find.

Marisa is accompanied, actually made this record together with her husband at that time, Cesar Camargo Mariano, in charge of the arrangements and artistic direction. Jongo Trio also makes a solid contribution to this record, participating on tracks 01, 02, 03, 04, 09 and 11. Cesar Camargo Mariano plays piano and acoustic guitar with Saba (bass) and Toninho (drums) from Jongo Trio on tracks 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 08, 10 and 12.

Tracks include:

01 – Eu Só Queria Ser (Vera Brasil / Mirian Ribeiro)
02 – Ciuminho (César Camargo Mariano / Marisa Gata Mansa)
03 – Chuva (Durval Ferreira / Pedro Camargo)
04 – Sonho de Carnaval (Chico Buarque)

This obscure LP, Marisa Gata Mansa e Denise Duran – Cancoes e Saudades de Dolores (1969) is probably the greatest enigma ever at Loronix. zecalouro could not find it on any discography at the Internet. The LP is not part of Marisa Gata Mansa discography and Denise Duran – which is probably Dolores Duran sister – is not credit as a singer on any structured resource zecalouro could reach.

I invite you to make a try to this LP and any friend who can add more information to this post, feel free to comment, so we can put an end on this mystery. Tracks include:

01 – Tome Continha de Voce (Marisa)

zecalouro is a little better, but still felling tired of an all day long fever. He reached the notebook and asked to open the folder where the LPs keep waiting for their chance to shine at Loronix. Poor bird, he could not read the folder names to make a decision. So, he decided to change the visualization to thumbnails to see the cover images on each folder.

That’s his decision, based on cover beauty he decided to present Loronixers Marisa Gata Masa and her 1975 LP, Marisa, A Gata Mansa. For the friends who arrivedy late at Loronix, Marisa Gata Mansa is a Brazilian singer that on some manner took the legacy of the great Dolores Duran.

Anyway, tomorrow, feeling better, zecalouro will manage additional informatio about this LP. Tracks includes:

01 – Por causa de você (Dolores Duran – Tom Jobim)
02 – Ternura Antiga (Ribamar – Dolores Duran)
03 – Fim de Caso (Dolores Duran)
04 – Cantiga de Quem Esta So (Jair Amorim – Evaldo Gouveia)
05 – Ceu e Mar (Johnny Alf)
06 – Idéias erradas (Ribamar – Dolores Duran)
