Baden Powell & Cantores Da Lapinha, Os - As Músicas De Baden Powell E Paulo C Pinheiro

What a day! I’m tired and my eyes hurt, but I cannot finish this great day without music at Loronix. I’m tired and I need to be really straightforward this time. This is Baden Powell and Paulo Cesar Pinheiro performing their compositions with a vocal group called Os Cantores da Lapinha, which is probably a temporary group assembled only for this recording session. By the way, another nice Jorge Mello’s contribution, waited for many friends at Loronix. Let’s see.

This is Baden Powell e Paulo Cesar Pinheiro – As Musicas de Baden Powell e Paulo Cesar Pinheiro | Os Cantores da Lapinha (1970), for Elenco. Os Cantores da Lapinha is a solid Samba LP with Baden Powell singing. You will not find instrumental tracks. My highlight goes to 07 – Falei e Disse (Baden Powell / Paulo Cesar Pinheiro), which is also my choice to Loronix Preview Center. Tracks include:

01 – Aviso aos Navegantes (Baden Powell / Paulo Cesar Pinheiro)
02 – Quaquaraquaqua (Vou Deitar e Rolar) (Baden Powell / Paulo Cesar Pinheiro)
03 – Refem da Solidao (Baden Powell / Paulo Cesar Pinheiro)
04 – Carta de Poeta (Baden Powell / Paulo Cesar Pinheiro)

MPB4 - Deixa Estar

Hello, good evening! I have this album for quite a time, and I could only understand this cover today after taking the vinyl to a spin and examining this cover in my hands. There is a strong and obvious reference here, Deixa Estar is a free Portuguese translation of Let it Be, which is the name of one of the last albums by The Beatles, releases also in 1970 with the same black background with photos of its four members. The Beatles influence was really strong, this is the second cover made available at Loronix referencing the same Let it Be. Who remembers the first one? Let’s see.

This is MPB4 – Deixa Estar… (1970), for Elenco, another above the average MPB4 album by Elenco in the early 70’s. Deixa Estar has arrangements by Magro and Miltinho with Roberto Menescal in charge of strings and brass arrangements. This album is dedicated to all Loronix’s mothers, even if your country do not celebrate Mother’s Day this Sunday. Tracks include:

01 – Deixa Estar (Maurício Tapajós / Hermínio Bello de Carvalho)
02 – Liana Verde Bandeira (Toninho Horta / Ronaldo Pereira)
03 – Gago Apaixonado (Noel Rosa)
04 – Candeias (Edu Lobo)
05 – Beco do Mota (Milton Nascimento / Fernando Brant)
06 – Derramaro o Gai (Luis Gonzaga / Zé Dantas)
07 – O Crime (Jards Macalé / Capinan)
08 – Pelo Telefone (Donga / Mauro de Almeida)
09 – Mar da Tranquilidade (Ruy Faria / Cynara / Aquiles)
10 – Lamento (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
11 – Yara Bela (Toninho Horta)
12 – Amigo É Pra Essas Coisas (Silvio Silva Júnior / Aldir Blanc Mendes)

I had a hard time finding a suitable album to close this night, which I had a very good time putting in place. Three solid releases, starting with the acclaimed Lucienne Franco, reaching Bene Nunes with arrangements by Jobim, Gnattali and Severino Filho and closing with MPB-4 10 years celebration album, released in 1975. I think we will not go wrong this way, I could make the option for one of those essential repostings, but MPB-4 has not been released so often. I hope you have a nice time hearing this album, as I’m having showing it to our community. Let’s see.

This is MPB-4 – 10 Anos Depois (1975), for Philips, presented to Loronixers with an Argentinean issue, featuring the guys with bored faces. I’m not sure if the Argentinean cover matches with the first Brazilian issue, since this album never had a CD reissue, as far as I know. The repertoire features several well-known MPB-4 songs with Quarteto em Cy as special guest on tracks 07 – Pressentimento and 09 – Amei Tanto. Tracks include:

This is in response of a friend who shouted at CBox for MPB-4 Antologia. I thought he was wrong, taking Quarteto em Cy – Antologia do Samba Cancao by mistake. I was a surprise to confirm MPB-4 Antologia existence and also to realize the album follows the same concept of Quarteto em Cy equivalent. Actually, MPB-4 Antologia was released one year before Quarteto em Cy both volumes. This is really nice. Everyday I learn a new thing at Loronix. Let’s see.

This is MPB-4 – Antologia (1974), for Philips, featuring medleys of selected artists, such like Antonio Carlos Jobim, Ismael Silva, Paulinho da Viola, Baden Powell and others. Quarteto em Cy has a major participation on Monsueto, Chico Buarque and Ataulfo Alves medleys. Antologia is really a great find; very nice to known it is predecessor of Quarteto em Cy. Thanks to CBox friend for pointing to us. Antologia also features Paulo Moura, Luiz Claudio Ramos, Miguel Cidras and Mario Tavares as special guests. Tracks include:

01 – MONSUETO – Me Deixa Em Paz (Monsueto / Airton Amorim) – Featuring: Quarteto Em Cy A Fonte Secou (Monsueto / Tufic Lauar / Marcléo) – Featuring: Quarteto Em Cy Mora na Filosofia (Monsueto / Arnaldo Passos) – Featuring: Quarteto Em Cy Eu Quero Essa Mulher (Monsueto / José Batista) – Featuring: Quarteto Em Cy
02 – CHICO BUARQUE Cordão (Chico Buarque) – Featuring: Quarteto Em Cy Meu Refrão (Chico Buarque) – Featuring: Quarteto Em Cy

04 – ATAULFO ALVES Laranja Madura (Ataulfo Alves) – Featuring: Quarteto Em Cy Pois É (Ataulfo Alves) – Featuring: Quarteto Em Cy

I don’t have info available on Loronixers feedback to MPB-4; perhaps we did not release many albums or made wrong choices. I hope this one corrects any gaps Loronix has with this really important Brazilian vocal group. Thanks to Marcia Webber for showing zecalouro the way to this album, for sure one of the best ones released by MPB-4. I spoke with Caetano about this album and he gave an enthusiastic feedback, which is something that Caetano only gives to the ones that really deserves.

This is MPB-4 – De Palavra… em Palavra… (1971), for Elenco. I’m only disappointed for not having additional information on this session that had Roberto Menescal playing the role of Production Director. The back cover also credits Magro as arranger, but it is not specific if he is also in charge of instrumental arrangements. The repertoire is beautiful, with songs that will keep inside your head after a first hearing. Tracks include:

MPB-4 / Quarteto em Cy – Cobra de Vidro (1978)

Today posts were not planned and it was one of the days that I like most. Non-planned days produces nice outcomes, for instance, no instrumental music today, also, a nice harmonization of three albums to Loronixers, we started with a female singer, Neusa Maria, made a male singer in the middle, Joao Bosco and the close blends boys and girls, MPB-4 and Quarteto em Cy performing together. Isn’t that great? Well, I think it is.

This is MPB-4 / Quarteto em Cy – Cobra de Vidro (1976), for Philips. I don’t know if our Quarteto em Cy consultant Mr. G. has Cobra de Vidro among his favorites, if not, I think Mr. G. should consider as one of the best from now on. Cobra de Vidro has several different situation, such as: the best Because (Lennon / McCartney) rendition I have ever heard, two wonderful “instrumental” songs using voices as instruments, Noites Cariocas (Jacob do Bandolim) and Fuga (Heitor Villa Lobos) and a Guarania with Spanish lyrics Me Gustan Los Estudiantes (Violetta Parra). I don’t have idea of the popularity and availability of this album in Brazil and worldwide, perhaps this should be a wonderful surprise to Loronixers. Tracks include:

01 – Nada Será Como Antes (Milton Nascimento / Ronaldo Bastos)
02 – A Estrada e o Violeiro (Sidney Miller)
03 – Guararapes (Dori Caymmi / Paulo César Pinheiro)
04 – Noites Cariocas (Jacob do Bandolim)
05 – 5/6/65 (Luis Cláudio Ramos) Instrumental
06 – Não Existe Pecado ao Sul do Equador (Chico Buarque / Ruy Guerra)
07 – O Cio da Terra (Milton Nascimento / Chico Buarque)
08 – Me Gustan Los Estudiantes (Violeta Parra)
09 – Oriente (Gilberto Gil)
10 – Because (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
11 – Amor Amor (Sueli Costa / Cacaso)
12 – Fuga (Vocal) (Villa-Lobos)

Aracy de Almeida e Ismael Silva – Show Samba Pede Passagem (1966)

My apologies to Ismael Silva, MPB-4, Carlos Poyares, Conjunto Samba Autentico, Partido Alto and Sidney Miller with his Grupo Mensagem, but this album is all about Aracy de Almeida, which is a Samba singer considered by Noel Rosa as the best interpreter of his compositions. Aracy de Almeida has a giant discography, mostly 78 RMPs and more than 50 years on recordings. My apologies also to do not make this post earlier, a friend of zecalouro sent this LP to Loronixers and I’m very happy to show it at the quality deserved.

This is Aracy de Almeida e Ismael Silva – Show Samba Pede Passagem (1966), for Polydor, recorded live at Teatro de Arena, Rio de Janeiro, December 1965, directed by Joao das Neves and Armando Costa, Musical Direction by Maestro Lindolfo Gaya and produced by Grupo Opiniao.

It is a shame that Aracy de Almeida is pretty unknown as a singer in Brazil. I don’t know exactly why and when, she made a shift on her career, leaving professional singing for a participation on a Brazilian TV Show, Show de Calouros, presented by Silvio Santos. I remember by the time Aracy de Almeida passed away, Brazilian media did not make a single mention of the great singer she was, but only as the woman of Show de Calouros. That’s why zecalouro is making two videos, the first is Aracy de Almeida performing Nao Me Diga Adeus (1975) and the second one is an excerpt of her participation at Show the Calouros. By the way, Aracy was fantastic on that show and I had a great time when I was a kid watching her. Tracks include:

Let’s move forward with something different, a Compacto Duplo, also known as EP, kindly sponsored by Trix from Minas Gerais. Trix found this gem accidentally; he was making a research on rare tracks of Nara Leao for his listening pleasure, when this record came on his several blitz on old vinyl shops in Belo Horizonte. Thanks Trix for making it available to Loronixers.

This is Quincas Berro D’Agua – Trilha Sonora da Peca Teatral (1972), for Philips, featuring Nara Leao, Gereba, MPB-4, Edil Pacheco and Fernado Lona. It will be very nice to hear new tracks from Nara Leao and MPB-4 never released in their solo releases. Tracks include:

MPB-4 – MPB-4 (1966)

I could not find a reasonable answer for a friend question this week regarding the absence of the legendary Brazilian vocal group MPB-4 solo releases. Good question by this friend. MPB-4, with Os Cariocas and Quarteto em Cy, are together the most important Brazilian vocal groups of all time releasing several albums during decades since the 60’s.

This is MPB-4 – MPB-4 (1966), for Elenco, MPB-4 debut LP, produced by Aloysio de Oliveira and arranged by Maestro Lindolfo Gaya. MPB-4 is more associated with the Brazilian MPB from the 70’s while Os Cariocas started earlier with a strong association with Bossa Nova from the 60’s. Perhaps this is the reason for this late appearance at Loronix. Tracks include:

01 – Manhã de Liberdade (Nelson Lins e Barros / Marco Antônio Menezes)
02 – Agora É Cinza (Alcebíades Barcelos “Bide” / Armando “Marçal”)
03 – Juca (Chico Buarque)
04 – Poema do Mar (Márcio Proença / João Carlos)
05 – Sonho de Um Carnaval (Chico Buarque)
06 – Olê Olá (Chico Buarque)
07 – Tereza Tristeza (Chico Buarque)
08 – Lamento (Pixinguinha / Vinicius de Moraes)
09 – Trem Parador (Sergio Ricardo)
10 – Samba Lamento (Luis Marçal Neto)

This is Celia Reis, her first time at Loronix, thanks to Edson Mendes, the fast friend that sent us the Front and Back cover of the Elizeth Cardoso LP with Joao Gilberto as a side-man, playing guitar. It is hard to write about this album, really above the average of LPs with Samba songs.

This is Celia Reis – O Samba e Celia Reis (1962), for Philips, solid from start to the end with arrangements of Baden Powell and also guitar playing in some tracks. Backing vocals are wonderful, provided by MPB-4. Celso Murilo plays organ on several tracks. Celia Reis was a big surprise for me, beautiful singing. Edson Mendes made a wonderful job providing also background information on this record, which is included with the music. Tracks include:

01 – Só Danço Samba (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 – Vai de Vez (Orlann Divo / Roberto Jorge)
03 – Leilão (Luis Reis / Haroldo Barbosa)
04 – Dan Chá-chá-chá (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
05 – É Samba (Cyro Monteiro)
06 – Influencia do Jazz (Carlos Lyra)
07 – O Amor Que Acabou (Chico Feitosa / Luis Fernando Freire)
08 – Sambadinho (Orlann Divo / Roberto Jorge)
09 – Dói Mas É Bom (Billy Blanco / Nilo Sergio)
10 – Para Não Sofrer (Tom Jobim)
11 – Deve Ser Amor (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)

When someone had asked at CBox for this soundtrack a couple of days ago, I could not imagine it was so good. This is Quarteto em Cy, MPB-4, Ziraldo e Sergio Ricardo – Flicts (1980), for Philips. Flicts is based on the first Ziraldo book written for children in 1969, the story of a color that could not find its place in this world.

The book is truly amazing; Ziraldo used lots of colors and a minimum of words. The U.S. Embassy in Brazil gave a copy of the book to the American astronauts that first stepped on the moon when they visited Brazil. Neil Armstrong, one of the astronauts, was touched when he read the book, and wrote to Ziraldo: “The moon is FLICTS”.

Ziraldo is really a lucky guy. Flicts has a top-notch personnel listing that I invite you to take a careful look before getting tracks.
