Hello, good evening! I am very proud to be in charge of the technology side of Musicos do Brasil: Uma Enciclopedia Instrumental, the first Brazilian music Encyclopedia devoted to instrumental music. The website was recently updated with new features and left the Beta stage. When I have an album to share with the community, the Encyclopedia is very useful, being a solid reference source. Follow this link to reach Paulinho Nogueira’s entry and read about this great master of Brazilian guitar.

The Encyclopedia says that Paulinho Nogueira was more active as a teacher than as a studio musician. I also learned that Paulinho Nogueira was a designer, an essential skill to forge his invention, the craviola, an instrument that was adopted by Luiz Bonfa on his anthological Jacaranda album. Anyway, it is better leave the discovery pleasure for you; in the meantime, Loronix delivers another great Paulinho Nogueira record never released in CD. Let’s see.

This is Paulinho Nogueira – Sambas e Marchas da Nova Geracao (1967), for RGE, with the participation of Luiz Loy Quinteto and Os 3 Moraes. Sorry, for talking about different things at this post, but I just received from our friend Warren a YouTube video that really worth to be shared with you. It is about a guy that made a not authorized commercial movie about a store using a mobile phone camera, here. You will understand why it is so great when you take a look. Anyway, Paulinho Nogueira has the accompaniment of not credit musicians, singing on a few tracks. Track 01 – Roda (Gilberto Gil / Joao Augusto) a perfect example of one of Paulinho Nogueira’s strengths, which is the way he creates a completely different version of well-known compositions of other musicians. Tracks include:

01 – Roda (Gilberto Gil / João Augusto)
02 – Menina da Agulha (Sidney Miller)
03 – O Que a Gente Quer (Paulinho Nogueira)
04 – João e Maria (Hilton Accioli / Geraldo Vandré)
05 – Sem Mais Adeus (Francis Hime / Vinicius de Moraes)
06 – Quem Te Viu Quem Te Vê (Chico Buarque)
07 – Para Contribuir à Confusão Geral (Paulinho Nogueira)
08 – Canção de Não Cantar (Sergio Bittencourt)
09 – Noite dos Mascarados (Chico Buarque)
10 – Procissão (Gilberto Gil)
11 – Benza Deus (Paulinho Nogueira)
12 – Máscara Negra (Zé Keti / Pereira Matos)

Paulinho Nogueira - Paulinho Nogueira

Hello, good evening! I had a crazy week, with lots of things to do and I can’t believe how fast these five days passed so quickly. When I was a kid, my grandfather said that as long as we get older as fast the time goes away. That’s what I’m feeling. I remember Christmas as it was last week. Anyway, Jorge Mello comes to please us again with another of his awesome albums, featuring an artist of great appreciation at Loronix, Paulinho Nogueira. Let’s see.

This is Paulinho Nogueira – Paulinho Nogueira (1965), for RGE, featuring an instrumental Paulinho Nogueira with a reduced percussion accompaniment in charge of Radamanto and Rogerio. This is the kind of album that grabs your attention at the first hearing; Paulinho Nogueira performs a repertoire of well known bossa nova cuts, including his rendition of Luiz Bonfa’s Manha de Carnaval and Paulinho’s Bachianinha Nr. 1. My choice to Loronix Preview Center is 06 – So Tinha de Ser com Voce (Antonio Carlos Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira). Tracks include:

Hello, good evening! I can’t remember a rain such like we are receiving in Rio de Janeiro. It is a non-stopping rain that lasts three or four days. The beach gets empty and people stay in their places, which was my option yesterday, when I took a time to hear some albums to take them in consideration at Loronix. This one is an outcome of this evaluation. Let’s see.

This is Paulinho Nogueira – Sambas de Ontem e Hoje (1961), for RGE, the third Paulinho Nogueira solo LP, backed by Conjunto RGE with no credits to arranger and musician. This cover, with the message “Music for Tourists” cheats me, I always considered this album some sort of Para Dancar release, but Paulinho Nogueira delivers again a really nice album with very good guitar playing on top of a nice repertoire of Sambas and Bossa Nova cuts. Loronix Preview Center (now with a new skin) features track 01 – Barquinho (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Boscoli). Tracks include:

01 – Barquinho (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
02 – Só Vou de Mulher (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
03 – Quem Quiser Encontrar o Amor (Geraldo Vandré / Carlos Lyra)
04 – Tema do Boneco de Palha (Vera Brasil / Sivan Castelo Neto)
05 – Menino Desce Daí (Paulinho Nogueira)
06 – Coisa Mais Linda (Carlos Lyra / Vinicius de Moraes)
07 – Morena Boca de Ouro (Ary Barroso)
08 – Odeon (Ernesto Nazareth)
09 – Se Acaso Você Chegasse (Lupicínio Rodrigues / Felisberto Martins)
10 – Dora (Dorival Caymmi)
11 – Cabelos Brancos (Herivelto Martins / Marino Pinto)
12 – Ai Ioiô (Linda Flor) (Henrique Vogeler / Luis Peixoto / Marques Porto)

Paulinho Nogueira - O Fino do Violao Vol. 2 (1980)

Hello, good evening! I want to start today addressing a challenge made by our friend GR at the comment section of the last Paulinho Nogueira post. GR said: “I have a few Nogueira requests – if you can make them happen I will be very very happy and I promise to record a Brazilian song on guitar for you!! (instrumental)”. I cannot wait to see GR playing instrumental guitar on video, since Paulinho Nogueira – O Fino do Violao Vol. 2 (1980) is on GR waiting list. Let’s see.

I like Paulinho Nogueira violao only albums, please check the end of this post for three music videos with Paulinho Nogueira playing Bachianinha Nr. 1 alone and with Toquinho and a wonderful rendition of Air on the G string by J. S. Bach. Tracks include:

Paulinho Nogueira - Canta Suas Composicoes (1970)-BACK

I’m writing this text while listening to this album for the second time today, and once again, bossanovadreamer was totally right when he said this is one of the best albums released by Paulinho Nogueira. Thanks for the tip, bossanovadreamer, this is the first album where Paulinho Nogueira performs as a singer, not as an instrumentalist. Let’s see.

This is Paulinho Nogueira – Paulinho Nogueira Canta Suas Composicoes (1970), for RGE, with arrangements and musical direction by Hector Laguna Fietta. This is all I know about this album, featuring only Paulinho Nogueira compositions. Personnel listing is not available, and I would like very much if someone identifies the organist, he delivers a groovy Hammond B3 organ, such like Walter Wanderley. This album never had a CD reissue, as many Paulinho Nogueira LPs from the 60’s and 70’s. Tracks include:

01 – Menina (Paulinho Nogueira)
02 – O Jogo É Hoje (Paulinho Nogueira)
03 – Imagens Coloridas (Paulinho Nogueira)
04 – Brasileiro É Fogo (Paulinho Nogueira)
05 – Para Contribuir a Confusão Geral (Paulinho Nogueira)
06 – O Que a Gente Quer (Paulinho Nogueira)
07 – Menino Desce Daí (Paulinho Nogueira)
08 – Estorinha (Paulinho Nogueira / Rita Moreira)
09 – Contracanto (Paulinho Nogueira)
10 – Moça da Chuva (Paulinho Nogueira / Rita Moreira)
11 – Menino Jogando Bola (Paulinho Nogueira)

Paulinho Nogueira - Show de Samba (1968)
PaulinhoPostHere we go on another great courtesy of JOAO-SP, featuring an artist recently released and acclaimed by many Loronixers, Paulinho Nogueira. This is an early Paulinho Nogueira LP, released by Premier, a RGE subsidiary, which is the label Paulinho Nogueira recorded most of his albums in the 60’s. Let’s see. This is Paulinho Nogueira – Show de Samba (1968), for Premier. I could not speak with JOAO-SP about this album and my searches did not identify if Show de Samba is Paulinho Nogueira career LP or a compilation of his RGE albums. This is perhaps the fist time an album is being releasing without such identification. Anyway, this is Paulinho Nogueira guitar accompanied by conjunto, probably Conjunto RGE, delivering renditions of Bossa Nova standards in the Para Dancar style. Paulinho Nogueira guitar playing is amazing, as always. Tracks include:

01 – Morena Boca de Ouro (Ary Barroso)
02 – Corcovado (Antonio Carlos Jobim)
03 – Agora e Cinza (Bide / Armando Marcal)
04 – Garota de Ipanema (Antonio Carlos Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
05 – O Pato (Jaime Silva / Neusa Teixeira)
06 – Desafinado (Antonio Carlos Jobim / Newton Mendonca)
07 – Se Acasso Voce Chegasse (Lupscinio Rodrigues / Felisberto Martins)
08 – A Mesma Rosa Amarela (Capiba / Carlos Pena Filho)
09 – Rio (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Boscoli)
10 – Mas que Nada (Jorge Ben)
11 – Manha de Carnaval (Luiz Bonfa / Antonio Maria)
12 – Menino das Laranjas (Theo)

Paulinho Nogueira - Dez Bilhoes de Neuronios (1972)-BACK

If there is an artist I need to know more about, I’m sure this artist is Paulinho Nogueira, a very important Brazilian guitarist and composer with more than one hundred albums recorded, including singles, EPs and participations. Loronix has only three Paulinho Nogueira career LPs and most his vast discography never had CD reissues. I think we have a good choice to start filling this gap with the first Paulinho Nogueira LP to Continental. Let’s see.

This is Paulinho Nogueira – Dez Bilhoes de Neuronios (1972), for Continental, produced by Walter Silva and arranged by a dream team of Maestros, Rogerio Duprat, Luiz Arruda Paes and Jose Briamonte. I thought Paulinho Nogueira albums were all instrumental, such strong is his association as a guitarist and this album brings a repertoire with some cuts with lyrics. Rogerio Duprat, Luiz Arruda Paes and Jose Briamonte are responsible for individual tracks arrangements with a single exception 05 – Menina, featuring individual arrangements by the trio of maestros with each one using a different approach. The outcome is very interesting, with the blend of the arrangements on a single one by Rogerio Duprat. Tracks include:

Hello, Good Night! This is a contribution from a Loronix friend that I was on waiting state since the end of October, Cellus is his name and he will probably get surprised of seeing his record here. A record that will probably make the day of those who enjoy the Brazilian guitar, o Violao Brasileiro.

This is Paulinho Nogueira – Antologia do Violao (1976), for Philips. Actually, this LP should be called Antologia do Violao Brasileiro, since Paulinho Nogueira explores and renders a nice tribute for the musicians that made the history of the Brazilian guitar, playing songs of Garoto, Toquinho, Luiz Bonfa, Canhoto, Laurindo Almeida, Baden Powell, Rosinha de Valenca, Dilermano Reis, Catulo da Paixao Cearense and Paulinho Nogueira, also member of this selected group. Paulinho Nogueira – Brasil, Violao e Sambalanco (1960)

2 09 2011

Link original: Paulinho Nogueira – Brasil, Violao e Sambalanco (1960)
Publicado em: Saturday, September 23, 2006 by zecalouro

This is the late debut of the renowned Brazilian acoustic guitar player at Loronix, Paulinho Nogueira e Seu Violao – Brasil, Violao e Sambalanco (1960). Paulinho Nogueira is a awesome musician with a unique, delicate and soulful playing style. Paulinho was also the inventor of the “craviola” a instrument that mixes the sound of the harpsichord and viola, very common during the 70’s.

Among many other things, including the creation of a book on acoustic guitar that was very famous in Brazil, Paulinho Nogueira was also responsible for giving guitar classes to Toquinho when he started giving music education in 1964. AMG Bio and a picture of the craviola is provided below. Tracks include:

01 – Brigas Nunca Mais (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 – Noites Cheia de Estrelas (Cândido das Neves “Índio”)
03 – Fita Amarela (Noel Rosa)
04 – Menino Desce o Morro (Vera Brasil / De Rosa)
05 – Tome Continha de Você (Dolores Duran / Édson Borges)
06 – Samba no Céu (Paulinho Nogueira)
07 – Samba de Uma Nota Só (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
08 – Menina Moça (Luis Antônio)
09 – Violão no Samba (Paulinho Nogueira)
10 – Saudade Querida (Tito Madi)
11 – Chora Tua Tristeza (Oscar Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini)
12 – Promessa (Custódio Mesquita / Evaldo Ruy)

Paulinho Nogueira was a virtuosic musician who adapted a Brazilian feel to sophisticated acoustic guitar (violão) playing. He is distinctive for not having been influenced by jazz, as most popular Brazilian virtuosos have been. His playing was often reckless during his samba renditions, but he had a special bent on the ancient Brazilian musical tradition of doleful, tender, delicate interpretations, in which altered chords don’t play a significant role. He recorded 27 solo albums and toured throughout the world, playing his violão for 50 years.

At an early age, Nogueira began to learn the violão. At 11, he joined his older brother Celso Mendes’ group Kacique. Finishing his high-school studies, in 1950 he went to São Paulo city, playing at nightclubs such as Itapoã and presenting himself on radio stations Bandeirante and Gazeta as a soloist. In 1959, he recorded his first LP, for CBS. In 1964, he was awarded with Paraná’s government-sponsored Pinheiro de Ouro trophy, repeating the accomplishment in the next year. In those bossa nova years, he was active both as a soloist and an accompanist; and was invited to the historic show recorded in May 25, 1964, O Fino da Bossa (released as an album under the same title), in which he shared the stage with names such as Alaíde Costa, Zimbo Trio, Oscar Castro-Neves, and others. The show was followed by a regular TV show, also called O Fino da Bossa, on TV Record. The show, hosted by Elis Regina and Jair Rodrigues, also included Nogueira as a regular accompanist. Recorded live, those shows, which had the biggest audience of their time, were released on another seven LPs, reissued later on CD. Nogueira’s samba “Menino, Desce Daí,” reaching millions through the massive TV broadcast, was his first nationwide hit. In 1966, Nogueira was awarded with the Prêmio Guarani by music journalists and critics.

In 1968, his book on violão method, which would have more than 20 editions through the years, was published. In the next year, he presented his project for a new 12-string instrument, called by him the “craviola” because it blended the sounds of a harpsichord (cravo) and a Brazilian viola (viola). The project was taken on by musical instrument manufacturer Gianinni, which still sells a large number of the units worldwide. In the same year, the major newspaper O Estado de São Paulo awarded Nogueira as Best Musician of the Year. In 1970, his composition “Menina” reached number one on Brazil’s Top Ten, having also been a hit in Italy and France. In 1979, he participated in Cuba’s Carifesta, an international festival of the Caribbean countries. In 1986, Nogueira released his Tons e Semitons series: violão solos recorded on LPs accompanied with sheet music. In 1990, he released another instructional project, pioneering the music education video in Brazil with Violão em Harmonia, soon followed by four other videos. In 1991, he participated in the International Guitar Festival in Italy. In 1992, Nogueira performed in the Guitars in Concert show, held in Naples, Florence, Campobasso, Milan, and Rome, which also featured performances by guitarists Gianni Oalazzo (Italian), Jorge Morel (Argentinean), and Joe Pass (American). In the same year, Movie Play released his CD Late Night Guitar. Also for that label, he released in 1995 the CD Coração Violão. In the next year, he was featured in Guitar Player magazine and toured through Brazil in the Brasil Musical project, together with names such as Arthur Moreira Lima, Egberto Gismonti, André Geraissati, Altamiro Carrilho, and Wagner Tiso. He continued to release albums, including Reflections in 1999, Late Night Guitar in 2000 and in 2003, an album of Chico Buarque compositions titled Primeiras Composicoes. Nogueira suffered a heart attack at his home in Sao Paulo and died August 2, 2003.
