This album was on my wanting list for another purpose, to address a request of Juliana, a personal friend that is absolutely crazy for Pedrinho Mattar in all phases. I finally got it this week and decided to hear before giving it to her. That’s the story behind this post, Juliana agreed to show it to Loronixers and said to mention her name. Thanks Juliana!

This is Pedrinho Mattar – Um Show de Mattar (1971), for Copacabana, featuring Mauricio Einhorn (harmonica), Tita (vocal on track 03), Coral de Joab, Pedrinho Mattar (piano) and Moacyr Silva as producer and coordinator. Um Show de Mattar is a transitional album between the Samba Jazz works from the 60’s and the piano virtuoso years, it is easy to identify both phases throughout the tracks. Mauricio Einhorn delivers a solid harmonica playing, especially on track 02 – Conversa de Botequim. Tracks include:

01 – Darling Lili (J. Mercer / Henry Mancini)
02 – Conversa de Botequim (Noel Rosa / Vadico)
03 – Nirvana (Tita) with TITA
04 – Tu Mi Delirio (C. Portillo de La Luz)
05 – Sex-appeal (Fred Falcão / Arnoldo Medeiros)
06 – What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life (Michel Legrand / A. Bergman / M. Bergman)
07 – Tenebroso (Ernesto Nazareth)
08 – Anônimo Veneziano (S. Cipriani)
09 – Depois do Carnaval (Marilena Amaral / Sebastião Tapajós)
10 – Theme From Love Story (F. Lai / C. Sigman)
11 – Lúcia Esparadrapo (Antônio Carlos Marques / Jocafi / I. Tavares)
12 – Vim (Eduardo Souto Neto / Sergio Bittencourt)

I’m coming from dinner, where I had the chance to hear this LP for the first time. In spite of the outstanding recording quality made by Claudio Fragnan, this LP is since now an essential on my instrumental Bossa Nova short list. It is a great close to Pedrinho Mattar tribute at Loronix, several friends were asking and hunting this record for a long time and now I understand why everybody has been tracking it down.

This is Pedrinho Mattar Trio – Bossa Nova – Bossa Nova (1964), for Farroupilha. Instead of a quartet, Pedrinho Mattar combo was reduced to a trio on this formation, highlighting Pedrinho Mattar piano on foreground. It is not everyday that you hear such tight piano, bass and drums album. Pedrinho Mattar Trio features Pedrinho Mattar (piano), Mathias da Silva Mattos (bass) and Toninho Pinheiro (drums, with further participations at Jongo Trio and Som Tres). Tracks include:

01 – Samba Pro Pedrinho (Walter Santos)
02 – O Amor Que Acabou (Chico Feitosa / Luis Fernando Freire)
03 – Azul Contente (Walter Santos / Tereza Souza)
04 – Consolação (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
05 – Balanço Zona Sul (Tito Madi)
06 – Rimas de Ninguém (Vera Brasil)
07 – Nôa Nôa (Sergio Mendes)
08 – Beijo Swing (Geraldo Cunha / Milton de Paula)
09 – Sol (Mário Albanese)
10 – Cafuné (Denis Brean / Gilberto Martins)
11 – Eu Preciso de Você (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
12 – A Mesma Rosa Amarela (Capiba / Carlos Penna Filho)

Let’s make our Tribute to Pedrinho Mattar. You remember yesterday that I was sad of do not have any LPs to make the Tribute and that we would make it later. For my surprise, I received a call this morning from Caetano, he was trying to manage a solution for it, since we live on different cities and it was impossible to make it timely.

However, Caetano could manage the situation. He asked for the help of our new friend Claudio Fragnan, probably, the only alternative in Rio de Janeiro for Pedrinho Mattar records. Such like Caetano, Claudio is also a respectable collector with all the records that we have been dreaming on our entire life on his great collection. I just made a phone call to Claudio and he was very pleased to help on making a respectful tribute to Pedrinho Mattar. Additionally, zecalouro and Loronixers found a new friend. Thanks Caetano for introducing Claudio and Thanks Claudio for providing these LPs to Loronixers.

We will focus our tribute with the early Pedrinho Mattar LPs, which are the ones that better fit the kind of music that we appreciate here. This first one is a repost, but you should not miss it. Claudio is a genius on the secrets of transforming vinyl on best of breed digital files. You will be amazed when hearing.

This is Pedrinho Mattar – Bossa Nova (1963), for Farroupilha, featuring a quartet with Pedrinho Mattar (piano), Mathias Mattos (bass), Antônio Pinheiro (drums) and Ayres dos Santos (guitar), Pedrinho Mattar debut LP. Tracks include:

01 – O Pato (Jaime Silva)
02 – Play Bach (Denis Brean)
03 – Canção dos Olhos Tristes (Tito Madi)
04 – Murmúrio (Djalma Ferreira / Luis Antônio)
05 – O Bolo (Walter Santos / Tereza Souza)
06 – Samba Triste (Billy Blanco / Baden Powell)
07 – Desafinado (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
08 – Tema do Boneco de Palha (Vera Brasil / Sivan Castelo Neto)
09 – Sambossa (Agostinho dos Santos / Ayres dos Santos)
10 – Amor e Paz (Tito Madi)

These three LPs from the early Pedrinho Mattar as a trio are really outstanding. You had the chance to know the first one – in fact, a Quartet – a few posts ago, Pedrinho Mattar e Seu Conjunto – Bossa Nova (1963). Now it is the time to know the third out of the three ones, Pedrinho Mattar Trio – No 3 (1965), now really as a trio with Pedrinho Mattar (piano), Antônio Pinheiro Filho (drums) and João Soto Aguilar (bass).

This is a nice SambaJazz LP that includes a composition from Tuca as you can see at the tracks included:
01 – Neurótico (J. B. Meirelles)
02 – Nanã (Moacir Santos / Mário Telles)
03 – Zero Hora (Adilson Godoy)
04 – Inútil Paisagem (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
05 – Samba de Verão (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
06 – Quem É Homem Não Chora (Geraldo Vandré / Vera Brasil)
07 – A Morte de Um Deus de Sal (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
08 – Balansamba (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
09 – Você (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
10 – Preciso Aprender a Ser Só (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
11 – Pinkt (Maurício Einhorn)
12 – Balaiubá Xangô (Tuca)
Do not miss Pedrinho Mattar Trio – No 3 (1965), at Loronix.
