Pixinguinha - Pixinguinha 70

PixinguinhaStatueHello, good evening! I received an email that made me feel really glad, sent by a friend with several suggestions to Loronix. He said that Brazilian music is very well represented throughout Loronix, but with an unexplained gap, the little emphasis given to one of the greatest Brazilian musician of all time, Alfredo da Rocha Vianna, better known as Pixinguinha.

I fully agree, but unfortunately I do not have any career album recorded by the master. By the way, Pixinguinha recorded few LPs. His discography is more concentrated in 78RPMs and several participations on other artists’ records. Better late than never, here we have Pixinguinha music, recorded live to celebrate the seventy anniversary of the great master. Let’s see.

This is Pixinguinha 70 (1968), for MIS, recorded live at Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro. This album features Jacob do Bandolim, Radames Gnattali, Conjunto Epoca de Ouro, Os Boemios and Orquestra do Teatro Municipal and although released in CD a couple of years ago, is really obscure. There are nice performances by Jacob do Bandolim and Radames Gnattali and it was really hard to decide which one to list at Loronix Preview Center. Tracks include:

AdHoc has been of a great help during this week of IT crisis, for reasons that I don’t know, his user on my hosting company is the only not affected by the outage. Until further notice, AdHoc has the command, at least by his username. AdHoc says this cover is not good enough to Loronix. I say this cover is great! AdHoc seems to be a Photoshop Master on his Macintosh; his restorations are always impeccable, if PhotoShop exists on Mac platform. Anyway, this is another AdHoc contribution. Let’s see.

AdHoc sent us a Masterpiece, a piano only album with compositions written by one of the greatest Brazilian popular music genius, Alfredo da Rocha Vianna, also known as Pixinguinha. It is the first time we are making available at Loronix an album with Pixinguinha music from the start until the end. Piano Pixinguinha was recorded by Ricardo Camargos, a gifted pianist with a classical background with a professional career dedicated to popular music. Let’s see.

This is Ricardo Camargos – Piano Pixinguinha (1995), for Velas. In the years of 1993 to 1995, Ricardo Camargos made a research on files of Biblioteca Nacional do Rio de Janeiro, gathering never released compositions by Pixinguinha. The outcome of his project, called Piano Pixinguinha is this album, where Ricardo Camargos performs 11 never released Pixinguinha compositions, playing as found on his research, exactly as the writings of Pixinguinha he found at Biblioteca Nacional. The remaining 6 compositions are also Pixinguinha with adaptations by Ricardo Camargos.

AdHoc says, and I agree, this is a very important album, featuring Pixiguinha compositions that we never had the chance to hear before. Piano Pixinguinha was recorded at Sala Cecilia Meirelles, Rio de Janeiro. Tracks include:

There are several reasons for making this repost, but I will stay with the most important ones. This is the third album posted at Loronix, featuring Elizeth Cardoso, an artist with a great identification with this website. Additionally, as a very old post and an excellent album, deserves more visibility. The upgrade covers everything, such like improved scans, additional inserts, ripping, etc.

This is Elizeth Cardoso, Radames Gnattali & Camerata Carioca – Uma Rosa para Pixinguinha (1983), for Funarte, a tribute to Pixinguinha in the tenth anniversary of his passing, recorded live at Sala Funarte Sidney Miller, Rio de Janeiro. I think this album speaks by itself, a concert on a small theater that makes you feel the willing to travel back to the past and watch Elizeth Cardoso and Radames Gnattali performing together. Tracks include:

A Velha Guarda – A Velha Guarda (1955)

Maybe you have already in contact with this record, perhaps everybody knows it, but I think Loronix cannot skip this anthological LP just for referencing some nice facts involving this album. Taking apart the name, release date and format that you already know by reading the title, on a first sight, this cover has something modern for the time it was released, really revolutionary. In terms of music, this LP features one of the most emblematic Brazilian artists, Pixinguinha, on a reunion of the best Samba musicians of that time.

This is A Velha Guarda – A Velha Guarda (1955), for Sinter, the debut 10-inch of this legendary group lead by Pixinguinha and featuring Donga, Joao da Bahiana, Almirante, among others. The cover is a work from the Italian Lanfranco Rossi, known as LAN, Italian, but more “Carioca” than many people that were born in Rio de Janeiro. We had already some covers designed by Lan at Loronix, Lan is active until today and his art can be found everywhere. A Velha Guarda was recorded on a single day in July 11th, 1955. Tracks include:

João da Bahiana

Track List

01 – Que Perigo (Pixinguinha)
02 – Patrão Prenda Seu Gado (João da Bahiana / Pixinguinha / Donga)
03 – Coralina (Adpt. Pixinguinha)
04 – Nosso Ranchinho (Donga / J. Cascata)
05 – Honória (Gualdino Barreto)
06 – Essa Nega Qué Me Dá (José Luis de Moraes “Caninha”) with Almirante — Me Leva Me Leva Seu Rafael (José Luis de Moraes “Caninha”) with Almirante
07 – Flor do Abacate (Álvaro Sandim “Santini”)

Paulo Moura e Os Batutas – Pixinguinha (1996) Ao Vivo no Teatro Carlos Gomes

This album has something special, mainly because I could not resist making this post even though this is not out of print and it is pretty recent (1996). We have here a Beautiful Chorinho album recorded by Paulo Moura and Os Batutas on Teatro Carlos Gomes, 1996, Rio de Janeiro. Evaluate this, buy the record later; it is an essential Chorinho record.

This tribute to album presents 16 tracks of classic choro music by one of Brazil’s most important composers of all time, Alfredo da Rocha Viana Júnior, better known as Pixinguinha. Born in 1897, Pixinguinha got that nickname from his grandmother. One of 14 brothers and sisters, he began playing cavaquinho at the early age of 11. It was also between 11 and 12 years of age when he composed his first choro, “Lata de Leite.” However, it was not until he was 15 years old that he began to play professionally.

The rest is a long story that you will not resist to go though after listening to Paulo Moura e Os Batutas – Pixinguinha.
