Gafieira is a Brazilian dancing style based on Samba that had a great popularity in the 30’s to 40’s in Rio de Janeiro, a time with no TV sets, iPods or video games. Raul de Barros is “O Rei da Gafieira” (The King of the Ballroom), being active since the 40’s. This is one of Raul de Barros latest albums and I would like very much that you send feedback on it. Let’s see.

This is Raul de Barros – O Trombone de Ouro (1983), for CID, featuring a repertoire of classic tunes in the Gafieira genre, including the legendary Na Gloria, one of the greatest Raul de Barros compositions. I’m a big fan of the Gafieira style, some kind of soft instrumental Samba that is really delicious to hear. My highlight goes to 01 – Na Gloria, 03 – Copacabana, 04 – Doce de Coco… better stop here and take the whole track list as my highlight. Tracks include:

01 – Na Glória (Raul de Barros / Ari dos Santos)
02 – Pennsylvani 6-5000 (C. Sigman / J. Gray) – Tea For Two (V. Youmans / L. Caesar)
03 – Copacabana (João de Barro / Alberto Ribeiro)
04 – Doce de Coco (Jacob do Bandolim)
05 – Ave Maria (Vicente Paiva / Jaime Redondo)
06 – Pedacinhos do Céu (Waldir Azevedo)

Everybody is having a great time with Elza Soares – Com a Bola Branca (1966) and the trombone arrangements of Maestro Nelsinho do Trombone. It is time to revisit another great Brazilian trombonist, meet Raul de Barros – Brasil Trombone (1974), for Marcus Pereira.

We had some Raul de Barros releases when Loronix were just beginning, for the latecomers, Raul de Barros was very important to Brazilian music, recording more than 40 LPs. He is strongly associated with the old Rio de Janeiro and the gafiera nightclubs, some kind of Brazilian big bands with a very swinging instrumental music based on trombone solos.

This LP has also the participation of the legendary Abel Ferreira at sax and clarinet. Tracks include:

01 – Na Glória (Ari dos Santos / Raul de Barros)
02 – Chorinho de Gafieira (Astor Silva)
03 – Voltei ao Meu Lugar (Carioca)
04 – Paraquedista (José Leocádio)
05 – Violão Vadio (Baden Powell / Paulo César Pinheiro)
06 – Saudade da Bahia (Dorival Caymmi)
07 – Bronzes e Cristais (Alcyr Pires Vermelho / Nazareno de Brito)
08 – Baltazar (José Benedito de Freitas / Oscar da Silva)
09 – Dora (Dorival Caymmi)
10 – Pó-ró-ró Pó-ró-ró (Raul de Barros)
11 – Folhas Secas (Nelson Cavaquinho / Guilherme de Brito)

zecalouro’s mother said that we are missing some LPS at Loronix. This is quite dangerous, since tomorrow will be Brazilian elections and zecalouro will need to fly to his mom’s home.

Let’s avoid problems tomorrow posting mom’s favorites, starting with Raul de Barros e Orquestra Brazilian Serenade – O Som da Gafieira (1979), a Raul de Barros live set that will make you kick around the house. I don’t need to say that Raul de Barros is doing very fine at the cover. Tacks include:

02 – Passarinho (Chatim)
03 – Estatuto de Gafieira (Billy Blanco)

Raul de Barros LPs are not allowed played out loud here. Why? Simple: zecalouro – the parrot – is getting addicted to Raul and is starting a bad behaviour.

zecaloura – my wife – left this afternoon and we put Raul de Barros – Hoje tem Baile com Raul de Barros to play. The parrot got nuts with the record and learns to sing and dance the song Na Gloria, yelling out very loud getting the attention of my neighbors.

He only put an end to the dancing and yelling when I sprayed him. Look at his face. Looks like a punk

We cannot listen to Raul de Barros, but we can share his LPs at Loronix, and here we go again with Raul de Barros – Brazilian Serenaders – Na Mini Onda (uncertain date), a LP full of standards with Raul’s trombone and Brazilian Serenaders orchestra.

Take a look at the tracklist:

01 – Sunny
02 – Garota de Ipanema
03 – Black is Black
04 – Tema de Lara / Winchester Cathedral
05 – Favela
06 – Inútil Paisagem / Apêlo
07 – Preciso Aprender a Ser Só
08 – The More I See You / Um Homem uma Mulher
09 – Strangers in the Night
10 – Canto de Ossanha
11 – Corcovado
12 – Day Tripper
13 – Tempo Feliz
14 – Meditação

Não tinha este disco. Porém, graças aos amigos Andreas e Fulano Sicrano, ele hoje está disponível no Um que Tenha.

Without any previous planning, zecalouro is making this Wednesday some sort of Instrumental Brazilian Music Celebration, so let’s keep the pace showing Loronixers an obscure and rare LP from Raul de Barros – Hoje tem Baile com Raul de Barros (19??, uncertain date).

Raul de Barros is “O Rei da Gafieira”, The King of Ballroom, being active since the 40’s; he is one of the best Brazilian trombonists and the composer of the legendary song “Na Gloria”, which is the track 5 of this LP. He also took part as trombonist on several Brazilian orchestras.

Raul de Barros is another great musician that was not recognized and acclaimed, even with his great contribution for Brazilian music throughout several decades. Since the late 90’s Raul retired from the scene, living almost forgotten on a small cost town – Marica – in Rio de Janeiro.

zecalouro makes an announcement: if there is a jornalist, newspaper, TV chanell and anyoneassociated with the music press, please take a time to turn your attention to Raul de Barros. Surely, Raul has wonderful stories to tell. Let’s bring Raul de Barros back to the spotlights, giving him properly recognition.
