Hi again! Two posts in a single day and both have connections. Although we have music, this is all about a movement among Brazilian filmmakers in the 1950’s and 1960’s known as Cinema Novo. This is the original soundtrack of probably the most famous film from Cinema Novo, featuring Sergio Ricardo and the acclaimed filmmaker Glauber Rocha. There is a very interesting statement about Cinema Novo, “Uma camera na mao e uma ideia na cabeca” (“a camera in the hand and an idea in the had”), which is an adequate description of the movement, which main topics included Brazilian poverty using the Northeast region as setting for the productions. Let’s see.

This is Sergio Ricardo e Glauber Rocha – Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol (1964), for Forma, with music by Sergio Ricardo and Glauber Rocha, production by Roberto Quartin and speeches by the actors Othon Bastos and Geraldo Del Rey. Glauber Rocha also wrote the back cover liner notes and he mentions the legendary Grande Otelo singing a Ze Ketti’s Samba Magoa de Sambista at Nelson Pereira dos Santos film “Rio Zona Norte” from 1957. I found it on the excellent Bossa Brasileira, also available below. Don’t miss this video and have a nice Sunday and a very good first 2009 week. Tracks include:

Sérgio Ricardo - Sérgio Ricardo
Hello, good evening! I had an amazing week, with some problems in the middle, but the overall picture was very positive. And today was a special day. I was interviewed by a group of very nice friends, Loronixer’s friends by the way. They are running a documentary about the legendary Brazilian pianist Dom Salvador, which is also a very good friend of our community. I met Dom Salvador today and we spoke about music and about the albums Dom is having the opportunity to hear again via Loronix. Dom Salvador is a giant and a very kind gentleman. Thanks a lot Dom.

And my meeting with Dom Salvador was the end of my participation. However, I was invited to continue with the group and visit Elza Soares at her place in Copacabana to record the encounter of Don Salvador and Elza Soares after several years. Obviously, I took a fraction of a second to say “yes” and could stay for a couple of hours with Elza Soares, a marvelous woman who radiates peace and energy. Elza Soares is a great artist and a great human being.

I left the group in euphoria, having in mind something solid to Loronix today. And I could find for an unbelievable price one of most requested albums by our community featuring the Sergio Ricardo and Piri Reis delivering a surprisingly record that you cannot miss. Let’s see.

This is Sergio Ricardo – Piri, Fred, Cassio Franklin e Paulinho de Camafeu com Sergio Ricardo (1973), for Continental. I’m sure this is an awaited released by many friends. The community is always right, we have here a very nice album featuring only acoustic instruments and Sergio Ricardo compositions. It is so cool and different that makes it very hard to describe. I invite you to check a teaser track at Loronix Preview Center, just to make sure you will come back here. Tracks include:

Sergio Ricardo - Historia da MPB (1971)

Loronixers always give a great response to these short 10-inch albums from both 1971 and 1978 editions of Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira from Abril Cultural. I follow a simple criterion to release these albums, relevant artists with less than a few records available at Loronix. Sergio Ricardo is an example. Let’s see.

This is Sergio Ricardo – Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira (1971), for Abril Cultural, featuring Sergio Ricardo music performed by Sergio Ricardo, which is something different from the other albums from the series, featuring several artists. I think Sergio Ricardo fans will be amazed with this tiny record sent by Dona Iara inside the envelope and spinned for the first time to our community. Tracks include:

01 – Zelão (Sergio Ricardo)
02 – Pernas (Sergio Ricardo)
03 – Folha de Papel (Sergio Ricardo)
04 – Bichos da Noite (Sergio Ricardo / Joaquim Cardoso)
05 – Jogo de Dados (Sergio Ricardo)

Edu Lobo, Johnny Alf, Taiguara e Pery Ribeiro – Juntos! (1988)

Here we go again with another Caetano Rodrigues contribution, this time different, since Caetano gave this record as a gift on my last trip to Sao Paulo. Thanks Caetano. However, simplicity is not a word on Caetano’s dictionary. Caetano said to let it ready and wait for further instructions. That’s what I did, like a soldier and the instructions had just arrived here: release at 1 Million Hits day. Very wise of Caetano, 5 artists together on a single album is really a celebration.

This is Juntos! (1988), for Phonodisc, featuring Edu Lobo, Johnny Alf, Taiguara, Pery Ribeiro and Sergio Ricardo. I just spoke with Caetano about Juntos! and we agreed that some tracks were released only at this album and never were made available on regular releases by these artists. Any help to realize which are the songs never released on regular albums is really appreciated. Tracks include:

01 – O Nosso Olhar – SERGIO RICARDO
02 – Uma Vez um Caso – EDU LOBO
03 – O Amor da Justica – TAIGUARA
04 – Chega de Saudade – PERY RIBEIRO
05 – Orgulho de Bom Sambista – JOHNNY ALF
06 – Valsinha – PERY RIBEIRO
07 – Gingando Dobrado – EDU LOBO
08 – Paz de um Grande Amor – JOHNNY ALF
09 – Guarania Guarani – TAIGUARA
10 – Do Lago a Cachoeira – SERGIO RICARDO

I don’t know what to say at this post. In the other hand, I know what I feel when I heard this music, perplexity. I’m not an authority on Sergio Ricardo music and it is natural that my expectation is at least to hear songs with lyrics sung by Sergio Ricardo. Big mistake, this is the first Sergio Ricardo LP and it is (as far as I know) completely different from everything he made on his later works.

This is Sergio Ricardo – Dancante Nr. 1 (1959), for Todamerica, a release provided by the now legendary Mr. E. As I said, this is an inquisitive instrumental album from Sergio Ricardo, ahead of its time, featuring the piano of Sergio Ricardo backed by top-notch musicians. I’m wondering if there is a lost tape of a given Dancante Nr. 2 available. Anyway, I will let you hear and come back for additional considerations in comment section. Thanks Mr. E. for this one. Tracks include:

It is good to spent a time with Loronixers in the real world, you come back full of recommendation of posts that makes your life pretty easy. We were talking about music – what else we could talk about? – when someone picked this one from the shelf. I made a question with my green face about this record and everybody yelled out back very loud: “It is Amazing”! With such determination, let’s give it a try.

This is Sergio Ricardo – A Bossa Romantica de Sergio Ricardo (1960), for Odeon. The great curiosity about this record is on the title, sometimes taken as “Nao Gosto Mais de Mim”, others say “Musicas e Letras dele Mesmo”. I preffer to stay with A Bossa Romantica de Sergio Ricardo, defines better the LP, produced by Aloysio de Oliveira and features 12 tunes composed by Sergio Ricardo. Tracks include:

01 – Pernas (Sergio Ricardo)
02 – Não Gosto Mais de Mim (Sergio Ricardo)
03 – Máxima Culpa (Sergio Ricardo)

Sergio Ricardo & Lindolfo Gaya – Esse Mundo e Meu (OST) (1965)

This is a Caetano Rodrigues contribution that was waiting for a chance for a several weeks. Blame it on zecalouro for it. He kept on secret a wonderful and very hard to find LP, anyway, Christmas is coming and maybe he wants to release the some nice surprises to celebrate.

Meet, Sergio Ricardo & Lindolfo Gaya – Esse Mundo E Meu (OST) (1965), for Forma as FM-5. The collectors use to know by heart the identification code from the record labels that they like most, such as: ME-XX for Elenco, MOFB XXXX for Odeon, etc. I never had a request for this FM-5 OST, which is really surprising.

Esse Mundo E Meu is black and white movie picture directed by Sergio Ricardo that follows two men living in a Rio de Janeiro slum: a black shoe-shiner and a white mill worker. I never saw this movie and perhaps it is not available on DVD or VHS, but the soundtrack is nice with Sergio Ricardo compositions and Lindolfo Gaya arrangements. Personnel listing brings Ed Maciel, Wilson das Neves, among others. Tracks include:

01 – Cabocla Jandira (Lindolfo Gaya)
02 – Sonho (Sergio Ricardo / Lindolfo Gaya)
03 – Chorinho da Barbearia (Sergio Ricardo)
04 – Nem Fome (Sergio Ricardo)
05 – Tempestade (Lindolfo Gaya)
06 – Pregão (Sergio Ricardo)
07 – Oxalá Meu Pai (Lindolfo Gaya)
08 – Esse Mundo É Meu (Sergio Ricardo)
09 – Tempestade (II) (Lindolfo Gaya)
10 – Cabocla Jandira (Lindolfo Gaya)

When someone had asked at CBox for this soundtrack a couple of days ago, I could not imagine it was so good. This is Quarteto em Cy, MPB-4, Ziraldo e Sergio Ricardo – Flicts (1980), for Philips. Flicts is based on the first Ziraldo book written for children in 1969, the story of a color that could not find its place in this world.

The book is truly amazing; Ziraldo used lots of colors and a minimum of words. The U.S. Embassy in Brazil gave a copy of the book to the American astronauts that first stepped on the moon when they visited Brazil. Neil Armstrong, one of the astronauts, was touched when he read the book, and wrote to Ziraldo: “The moon is FLICTS”.

Ziraldo is really a lucky guy. Flicts has a top-notch personnel listing that I invite you to take a careful look before getting tracks.
