Hello, good evening! Wish I have much more energy tonight, because this is a special night and this is a really special post. This is the first of a probably endless series of album that will come to Loronix through a donation. Yes, I said a donation, and not a standard donation, but a complete collection, perhaps more than 700 records, spanning decades of Brazilian popular music.

The one responsible for this fantastic donation is a great friend. We have been together on on-line adventures since the 1980’s decade, a time that Internet was such like a dream and we had a lot of fun with BBSs. By the way, this friend reminds me CentroIn, which was really the best BBS in Rio de Janeiro (this is an easy hint to discover who is zeca!).

I said I’m tired and I’m really exhausted today. It is better and prudent to announce who made this donation later. By now, let’s stay with this suspense atmosphere and this great album never released before at Loronix and hard to believe that has gone out of print. Let’s see.

This is Sivuca – Live at the Village Gate (1973), for Vanguard, made available here with the Brazilian Copacabana issue. I would like to wait a couple of days to release this album in December 15th as a tribute to Sivuca’s passing in 2006, but I could not resist. This album was a missing piece in my collection and, of course, a missing piece at Loronix. Live at Village Gate was recorded at the homonymous Village Gate, a nightclub in New York City, and features Sivuca on his peak, backed by American musicians. I would like to send my best vibrations and wish a nice weekend to everybody. Tracks include:

(vocals, violao, accordion, piano, percussion)

Cindy Kimball
(voice, percussion)
Morris Goldberg
Mervin Bronson
Angel Allende
Sadiq Shabazz

Track List

01 – Adeus Maria Fulô (Sivuca / Humberto Teixeira)
02 – Berimbau (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
03 – It Might Have Been (Sivuca / D. Speropoles)

Sivuca & Guitars Unlimited - Let's Vamos-Back

Hello, good evening! I’m very tired today. It was one of those hard days that started very early and finished in the middle of the night. In the other hand, I’m now with that feeling of duty accomplished with several small advances. Although tired, I cannot skip the music scheduled for today at Loronix, which is another nice contribution sponsored by Jorge Mello and one of a few albums he said it was a winner. Let’s see.

This is Sivuca & Guitars Unlimited – Let’s Vamos (1987), for RGE, a Sivuca international collaboration with the legendary guitar duo Guitars Unlimited from Sweeden, lead by Ulf Wakenius. This is one of those albums were everything was works fine, the combination of guitar and accordion is really exciting and the friends of Guitars Unlimited are truly awesome musicians. Peter Almqvist is the other member of Guitars Unlimited. The session also had the participation of Glorinha Gadelha, Luizao and Fernando Pereira, a small group and a GREAT sound. Tracks include:

Guitars Unlimited
Ulf Wakenius, Peter Almqvist

Irany Pinto, José Menezes, Moacyr Silva & Sivuca - 4 Azes Em HI-FI

Hello, good evening! I have been away from Loronix in the past two days, but at the same time, I have never been so close to Loronix, acting behind the scenes and accelerating the work of reactivation of broken links. I have good news. Everything is working until October 15 2006 and from a grand total of 100 weeks, 79 are completed fixed up. I estimate additional 7 or 10 days to fix all weeks, and then Loronix should go back to business as usual. I think it is important to keep everybody informed about our progress. Don’t miss the Restoration Status Panel, always close to the first post.

Don’t miss also this truly amazing release, another album sent by Jorge Mello to our community. Let’s see.

This is Irany Pinto, Jose Menezes, Moacyr Silva, & Sivuca – 4 Azes em HI-FI (1958), for Copacabana. I think this cover and the musicians in this session make leads my writing to something not necessary, but I would like to say this album is not a compilation, they perform together across the whole session, with highlights to each one at specific tracks. Tracks include:

Irany Pinto
Jose Menezes
Moacyr Silva
(tenor sax)

Track List

01 – Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Domenico Modugno / Pazzaglia Franco Migliacci) – MOACYR SILVA

Sivuca - Um Pe No Asfalto Um Pe na Buraqueira (1990)-BACK

This is a chance and also a hint to new friends or those who are taking the first steps with Brazilian music to get along with a great artist, last released at Loronix almost four months ago. I’m talking about Severino Dias de Oliveira, or just Sivuca, a special musician, arranger, accordionist, composer, being also a multi instrumentalist. Sivuca had a successful international career, performing with Radames Gnattali, Baden Powell, Toots Thielemans, among many others. Let’s see.

This is Sivuca – Um Pe no Asfalto – Um Pe na Buraqueira (1990), for Copacabana, featuring Sivuca at his best, playing instrumental tunes with accordion. This album is delicious to hear and I cannot understand the reason to never being reissued on CD, such like the last album by Quarteto Negro. Loronix Preview Center features the title track, 02 – Um Pe no Asfalto, Um Pe na Buraqueira. I’m also bringing back from Loronix archives a music video with Sivuca performing Ceu e Mar in Sweden, 1968. Rildo Hora and Sivuca’s wife Gloria Gadelha are special guests, as detailed on track listing. Tracks include:

Airto Moreira - Seeds on the Ground LP (1971)-FRONT
Airto Moreira - Seeds on the Ground LP (1971)-BACK
This album is so great and so awaited by Loronixers that we will make something really different here, releasing both LP and CD versions. By the way, I have been discussing the value of Bonus Tracks on CD reissues with a friend and we came to a conclusion this tracks are not really useful and sometimes they even spoil the listening experience. Additionally, I think on most cases bonus tracks are some sort of studio leftovers and they were not included as they were not the artist will at that time. Anyway, terrific album and surprisingly out of print. Let’s see. This is Airto Moreira – Seeds on the Ground | The Natural Sound of Airto (1971), for Buddha Records, featuring a constellation of musicians, such as Hermeto Pascoal, Flora Purim, Dom Um Romao, Sivuca and others. This is the kind of self-explanatory release and I just like to thanks the group of friends that made available the album and the original fist issue cover artwork, great accomplishment to Loronix and great teamwork. I’m also curious to check which version, CD or LP, will be the most popular in the forthcoming days. Tracks include:

Airto Moreira
(drums, percussion, berimbau, vocal)
Flora Purim
Hermeto Pascoal
(harpsichord, flute, keyboards, bass, violao, piano, Japanese sapho)

Publicado em: Wednesday, October 10, 2007 by zecalouro

This night was very special and deserves to be closed with a special artist. Sivuca is a very special artist; he is part of a group of a few selected artists that everybody likes. Every Sivuca album I spin makes me feel better, saving those days that you are not in the mood of anything. Today is not the case, but as I said, it is a special day.

This is Sivuca – Vou Vida Afora (1982), for Copacabana, featuring the very special guest Quarteto em Cy on tracks 04 – Imaginacao and 07 – Arapua Fazendo Mel and Lucinha Lins on track 09 – Bailado, featuring arrangements by Ivan Lins. Such like the last Copacabana Sivuca album from 1979, Sivuca sings, which is something unique from my perspective. Personnel listing was not delivered by Copacabana, but Sivuca plays accordion in all tracks, including the instrumental tracks 05, 06 and 10. Tracks include:

01 – Forró da Bicharada (Sivuca / Paulinho Tapajós)
02 – Vou Vida Afora (Sivuca)
03 – Sonho de Neve (Sivuca / Paulinho Tapajós)
04 – Imaginação (Sivuca / Afonso Gadelha / Ana Maria Duveen) with Quarteto Em Cy
05 – Bate Tome Toca e Cai (Sivuca / Glória Gadelha)
06 – Coisas (Moacir Santos)
07 – Arapuã Fazendo Mel (Sivuca / Paulinho Tapajós) with Quarteto Em Cy
08 – Nunca Mais Eu Vi Esperança (Sivuca / Glória Gadelha)
09 – Bailado (Sivuca / Paulinho Tapajós) with Lucinha Lins
10 – Fim de Leilão (Julinho do Acordeom)

Sivuca & Toots Thielemans – Chiko’s Bar (1986)

Publicado em: Wednesday, September 12, 2007 by zecalouro

I was looking for this album since Loronix beginning and I found it with cvllos on a given vinyl expedition last month. The price was 1 Real (US$ .50) and when you find something you want by this price you just take it with no checking. First thing I did when arrived home was to put it to spin and I got scared when I saw a blue Copacabana label in the center of the vinyl and the word of Bienvenido Granda as main performer.

Parrots have no patience and are really focused. Then I remembered that someone sent it a long time ago as a contribution and I could not make it without the cover scans. That’s why we have here a blend of my cover with the files sent by a friend that did a pretty nice work. Let’s see.

This is Sivuca & Toots Thielemans – Chiko’s Bar (1986), for Sonet. I thought this album was a live recording of a concert at Chiko’s Bar nightclub, but it is an studio session, part of a project called “Rendez vous in Rio”, developed by Sonet producer Rune Ofwerman. Top-notch Brazilian musicians were in this session, as described at personnel listing, just before tracks. Tracks include:

(accordion, vocal)
Toots Thielemans
Luiz Avelar
Ricardo Silveira
Paulinho Braga
Ohana, Marcal
Clarence Ofwerman
(synthesizer, arrangements)

Track List

01 – I Just Called To Sy I Love You (Stevie Wonder)
02 – Vai Passar (Francis Hime / Chico Buarque de Hollanda)
03 – Sandra (Luiz Avellar)
04 – Imagine (John Lennon)
05 – Out of Nowhere (Eddie Heyman / Johnny Green)
06 – Pela Luz dos Olhos Teus (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
07 – There’s no Greater Love (Johnny Spencer)
08 – Luz do Sol (Caetano Veloso)

Publicado em: Saturday, September 01, 2007 by zecalouro

It has been a very long time since we made the last album by Sivuca, I’m not taking in consideration his last release with Rildo Hora, I’m talking about a Sivuca career album as main performer. Sivuca is all about Loronix and people always give nice feedback on his music. I think this album will take everybody by surprise, I took a lot of time digging the back cover to find the name of the guy who sings throughout the record and for my surprise, Sivuca sings lyrics and he makes it very beautiful. I hope people get pleased on hearing Sivuca again as I was today.

This is Sivuca – Sivuca (1979), for Copacabana, a great session with the atmosphere of being recorded like a friend’s rehearsal. Sivuca has some special guests of note, such as Hermeto Pascoal on tracks Nosso Encontro and Sambura de Peixe Miudo, Glorinha Gadelha, which is Sivuca’s wife also takes part at Joao e Maria, Doce Doce and Sambura de Peixe Miudo. Remaining musicians are not credit, but the back cover brings session pictures with Katia de Franca, Ivan Machado, Claudio Jorge, Ze Carlos and Teo Lima on Drums. Tracks include:

01 – Mãe África (Sivuca / Paulo César Pinheiro)
02 – A História Se Repete (Sivuca / Paulinho Tapajós)
03 – Nosso Encontro (Sivuca / Hermeto Pascoal) with Hermeto Pascoal

It is amazing this album has gone out of print, one of Sivuca’s most requested albums by Loronixers. It is now time to show this breathtaking instrumental album, which is the encounter of two great instrumentalists, Sivuca and Rildo Hora, the accordion and the harmonica, both performing in all tracks.

This is Sivuca & Rildo Hora – Sanfona e Realejo (1987), for 3M. This is probably the first album performed by the producer, composer, arranger and virtuoso harmonica player Rildo Hora. The repertoire mixes choro, MPB, forro and songs composed by Sivuca and Rildo Hora. Tracks include:

If you are Sivuca fan you will probably remember an old contribution by Caetano Rodrigues, a 10-inch album recorded in 1961, Sivuca – Samba Nouvelle Vague. I did not mention that time, but Samba Novelle Vague has a special connection with this album, Silvio Silveira accompanied Sivuca. Now it is the time of swapping positions, Silvio Silveira is the main performer and Sivuca is the special guest. By the way, what a really special guest!

This is Silvio Silveira – Silvio Silveira e i Suoi Ritmi Brasiliani – Bossa Nova Ad Alta Quota (no date), for Barclay. There is no problem with this record, except it is a really hard to find item, even impossible to track down at Goggle or auction sites. The Lucky friends that had the chance to know Caetano’s book will probably remember this record and this cover listed there on a special place. Caetano loves this record that has the participation of the legendary Sivuca in all tracks with all tricks, playing accordion and using his voice as an instrument. Tracks include:

01 – Bim Bom
02 – Bahia
03 – Feitico da Vila
04 – Fita Amarela

I was reluctant to make this post, worried that you might think this is a record for completionists and fans of the lovely guy holding the accordion at the right side, but I learned that several other artists took part on this group. Additionally, the record is good, especially if you are in the mood of a Brazilian regional music with a lot of viola, percussion and accordion, for sure. Let’s see what is the feedback.

This is Conjunto Brasilia Ritmos – Ritmos do Brasil (1959), for Odeon, featuring Sivuca, Waldir Azevedo, Tiao Marinho and others. I miss the time when we had in Rio de Janeiro a weekly show sponsored by the government called Projeto Seis e Meia, performed at Teatro Joao Caetano. I’m not sure about that, but there were weekly shows and the day of the week was Thursday and the time 6:30pm as the name indicates. This projects lasts for years and was tailored for those who worked downtown, however, a crowd was formed around noon and probably workers had to ask someone to save a place in the big line until 6:30. It was a wonderful time. I had the chance to watch many concerts. I cannot remember this one and I’m happy make it available to Loronixers.

This is Sivuca & Rosinha de Valenca – Gravado Ao Vivo (1977), for RCA. Two wonderful artists performing together on a popular show, this is in fact the best of both worlds. The atmosphere is very relaxed with Sivuca and Rosinha telling stories and getting audience feedback. Projeto Seis e Meia was lauched in 1976 by Joao Bosco and several renowed artists engaged during years, such as: Elizeth Cardoso, Ze Ramalho, Gonzaguinha, among others. Sivuca and Rosinha de Valenca had the accompaniment of Luis Carlos (drums), Jamil Joanes (bass), Darci (percussion) and Raul Mascarenhas (sax, flute). Tracks include:

01 – Homenagem à Velha Guarda (Sivuca)
02 – Quando Me Lembro (Luperce Miranda) — Vassourinha (Mathias da Rocha / Joana Batista Ramos)
03 – Reunião de Tristeza (Sivuca)
04 – Feira de Mangaio (Sivuca / Glória Gadelha)
05 – Asa Branca (Luis Gonzaga / Humberto Teixeira)
06 – Adeus Maria Fulô (Humberto Teixeira / Sivuca)

How long we do not see a new album from the great Sivuca at Loronix? I cannot remember by heart when it was, probably last year. Anyway, this is a nice record, probably unknown by several friends. By the way, this is a last year contribution of a friend from Argentina, Luis Contijoch, which I want to say thank you and give my appologies for such delay on posting. This happen with many friends.

This is Sivuca – Sivuca Med Putte Wickman Orkester (1968), for Interdisc – Sweeden, featuring Sivuca (violao, accordion and vocal), Putte Wickman (clarinet), Gõran Linhberg e Rolf Larsson (organ), Arne Willhemson (bass) e Fredrik Noren (drums). Do not take this record as the same of the previous Sivuca collaboration with Putte Wickman, which is something that our friend Luis did at that time. Tracks include:

01 – Misty (E. Garner)
02 – There Will Never Be Another You (M. Ager)
03 – Someone To Wathc Over Me (George Gershwin)
04 – Céu e Mar (Sivuca)
05 – Rosinha (Sivuca)
06 – Poema a Madrogda (Sivuca)
07 – La Pluie Sur La Mer (Sivuca)
08 – Berimbau (Sivuca)

Caetano sent this record with all other wonderful ones to out Tom Jobim Tribute. Caetano, this is something that you cannot do with a friend. I had to make the Tribute, big rush, working hard to be with everything ready on time and this wonderful piece starring at me and saying: “Caetano sent me just to make you mad…”. The tribute is over and today I could appreciate it, as this record deserves. Thanks Caetano, very wise to put this one in the middle.

This is Bobby Hackett and Billy Butterfield – Bobby / Billy / Brasil (1967), for Verve, featuring the voice and the acoustic guitar of Luiz Henrique and the voice and accordion of Sivuca. Bobby Hackett and Billy Butterfield are trumpet players. The magic of this recording session is indeed Luiz Henrique rhythm guitar and the eventual accordion of Sivuca that also uses his voice as an instrument on a unique way. It is also amazing that Bobby, Billy, Brazil, released in 1967, never had the chance to be reissued on CD, I’m happy that Caetano is my great friend to reveal such things to Loronixers. Tracks include:

01 – Dancing in The Dark
02 – Sunny
03 – Cherokee
04 – Quiet Nights
05 – Never Ever Leave me (Nunca me Deixes)
06 – Baia
07 – That’s All
08 – Love is Here to Stay
09 – Dawm Comes Again
10 – Foggy Day
11 – Brasil

The press coverage dedicated a few lines to inform and/or tribute the passing of the great Sivuca a few weeks ago. In the other hand, the music and fan communities in the Internet seems that will never stop, remembering, celebrating and sharing information about this great artist. We have here another Sivuca LP, pretty hard to find, sent by our friend Emilio Sadier just before his passing. Thanks for it Emilio.

This is Sivuca – Guitar and Accordion (1969), for Grammonfon AB Electra – Sweden, recorded in two days (January, 22 and 23), with arrangements by Sivuca and strings and flute arrangements by Merit Hemmingson. As far as I could search this record was never re-issued in CD and should be a missing piece for several fans of Sivuca. This cover has something strange that disturbs me; it is great, but for an unknown reason brings some melancholic feelings. I’m sure that you will enjoy this album. Tracks include:

01 – Canção da Volta (Ismael Netto / Antônio Maria)
02 – Arrastão (Edu Lobo / Vinicius de Moraes)
03 – Minha Saudade (João Donato)
04 – Eu e a Brisa (Johnny Alf)
05 – Sound Of Samba (Sivuca)
06 – Quem Quizer Amar Alguém (Luis Henrique)
07 – Amor Verdadeiro (Sivuca / Luis Bandeira)
08 – No Rancho Fundo (Ary Barroso / Lamartine Babo)
09 – By The Way (Eumir Deodato)
10 – Guriatã de Coqueiro (Severino Rangel “Ratinho”)
11 – Feitiço de Vila (Noel Rosa)
12 – Pra Que Chorar (Baden Powell)

Sivuca – Bossa Nova (1968)

Publicado em: Tuesday, December 12, 2006 by zecalouro

When I saw this LP at Caetano Rodrigues book, I found it very interesting, but I only realize that it was unique when Caetano came to Loronix and spoke with me about it. This is Sivuca – Bossa Nova (1968), for Reprise, perhaps the only LP release by Sivuca playing only acoustic guitar in all tracks.

As the title indicates, Sivuca visits well know Bossa Nova tunes on 14 tracks, singing and using his voice as an instrument in some tracks. I could not find were the recording session was performed. That’s another self-explanatory release. Tracks include:

01 – Berimbau
02 – Garota de Ipanema
03 – So Danco Samba
04 – Fly me to the Moon
05 – Mas que Nada
06 – Samba de Verao
07 – Corcovado
08 – Samba de uma Nota So
09 – Meditacao
10 – Agua de Beber
11 – Um Homem e Uma Mulher
12 – A Felicidade
13 – Manha de Carnaval
14 – Samba de Orfeu

Sivuca – Eis Sivuca! (1956) ’10

Caetano has a great sense of humor. He sent to zecalouro a LP recorded on CD with 24 tracks and the enigmatic message written by his own hand, “ate a faixa 14”, “until track 14”. I was fine with the contents from tracks 01 to 14, but what those remaining tracks were there at the same CD?

I had to address Caetano to get the answer and the answer is Sivuca – Eis Sivuca! (1956) 10′, for Copacabana, a unlisted record on several discographies, even on Sivuca’s website, probably unknown by many friends. It is amazing how Sivuca is a gifted musician; this LP was record 50 years ago and features Sivuca alone with his accordion, no accompaniment. Great performances, including an adaptation of of Tocatta Em Ré Menor (Johann Sebastian Bach) and other Brazilian tunes including Dorival Caymmi, Patapio Silva, Luperce Miranda and others. Thanks Caetano for another wonderful release. Tracks include:

01 – Tocatta Em Ré Menor (Johann Sebastian Bach)
02 – Vôo do Besouro (R. Korsakow)
03 – Primeiro Amor (Patápio Silva)
04 – Tenebroso (Ernesto Nazareth)
05 – Quando Me Lembro (Luperce Miranda)
06 – Lover (Rodgers / Hart)
07 – Corrupio (Guerra Peixe)
08 – Música Em Carrossel (Tradicional)
09 – Coração (Felinho)
10 – Morena Boca de Ouro (Ary Barroso)

I like to say thank you once in a while, but this time I want to say that I *need* to say Thank You. I have received today eight contributions. Amazing. It is also necessary to say that the contributions are being queued, so yours should wait some time to reach Loronix.

This is the contribution number 7 of this Friday, not queued because I’m a fan of this artist and this beautiful cover makes this post something very hard to resist. This is Sivuca – Sivuca (1972), for Vanguard and issued in Brazil in 1974 for Copacabana.

Andrade is the Loronix friend that took this forgotten treasure from his personal collection and made everything. Thanks a million Andrade. Sivuca plays accordion, guitar and piano, backed by Morris Goldberg (sax, clarinet and flute), Charles Chapellear (bass), Sadiq Shabazz (drums), Angel Allende and Sivuca (percussion), Cindy Kimball, Sue Cummings and Sivuca (vocals). Everybody likes Sivuca. I cannot remember how long it was the last Sivuca post, but I can remember it was a record with Putte Wickman, which became one of Loronix favorites.

During this stay in Paris, Sivuca has assembled a group, Brasilia Ritmos, with Waldir Azevedo as a member. Brasilia Ritmos LPs are really hard to find, I have been trying to get one for months. Perhaps someday with the help of Loronixers we can make it…

Some Loronix friends were asking for a Sivuca LP recorded in 1969 in collaboration with the Jazz clarinetist Putte Wickman. This is Putte & Sivuca (1969). Putte Wickman was born in Sweeden, his destiny was established by his parents that hope he would become a Laywer. For one of those facts that changes an entire life, Putte’s mother gave in at the age of 15 a clarinet.

Putte is one of those self-taught musicians that never had formal education on his instrument. Putte & Sivuca set had Sivuca (guitar, acordeon, vocal), Putte Wickman (clarinet), Bengt Lindqvist (Organ), Sture Nordin (bass) and Nils Erik Slörner (drums). Tracks include:

01 – Berimbau (Baden Powell)
02 – Why Didi I Choose You (H. Leonard / H. Martin)
03 – Céu e Mar (Johnny Alf)
04 – Minha Saudade (João Donato / João Gilberto)
05 – Laia Ladaia (Reza) (Edu Lobo)
06 – La Plui Sur La Mer (Sivuca)
07 – Tristeza (Haroldo Lobo / Niltinho Tristeza)

It has been a long time since zecalouro presented to Loronixers the first out of two Sivuca LPs titled Motivo para Dancar. The quest for the number two is now over and zecalouro proudly presents Sivuca e seu Conjunto – Motivo para Dancar Nr 2 (1957).

Sivuca is a legendary accordionist, arranger and composer that is still active. Fascinanting cover. The girl on the artwork looks very like a zecalouro’s friend who is a Brazilian singer. Who guess how is she? Tracks include:

02 – Feitiçaria (Evaldo Ruy – Custódio Mesquita)
03 – Mistura fina (Luiz Bandeira)
04 – Canção do mar (Federico de Brito – Ferrer Trindade)

06 – Rancho fundo (Ary Barroso – Lamartine Babo)
