Sylvia Telles - Caricia

Hello, good evening! Jorge Mello was very right providing this important record to our community. It is also a great coincidence that it is among the few albums definitely lost in my work of reactivating the missing links. Actually, this is perhaps the most important of them all; Carícia is the debut LP of a singer that I learned to admire with Loronix creation, Sylvia Telles. Let’s see.

This is Sylvia Telles – Caricia (1957), for Odeon, with the participation of a young musician named Antonio Carlos Jobim as arranger and conductor on two tracks, the opening track 01 – Por Causa de Voce and the closing 08 – Foi a Noite. Maestro Leo Peracchi is also in charge of arrangements and conduction of track 06 – Chove la For a. Odeon did not credit the remaining five tracks. Caricia features Antonio Carlos Jobim songs that became standards in the following years and Sylvia Telles delivers stunning performances. I think that even those who had already the chance to listen to Caricia in the first post should make this update, now featuring high quality front and back cover scans. Tracks include:

01 – Por Causa de Você (Tom Jobim / Dolores Duran)
02 – Sucedeu Assim (Marino Pinto / Tom Jobim)
03 – Tu e Eu (Altamiro Carrilho / Armando Nunes) with Lúcio Alves Candinho
04 – Se Todos Fôssem Iguais a Você (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
05 – Canção da Volta (Ismael Netto / Antônio Maria)
06 – Chove La Fora (Tito Madi)
07 – Duas Contas (Garoto)
08 – Foi a Noite (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)

PS.: I forgot to mention Lucio Alves participation as special guest on track 03 – Tu e Eu. Candinho is the special guest, thanks Edson Mendes for this correction.

Sylvia Telles - Amor Em HI-FI

Let’s close tonight with the update of an album released in the very first beginning of Loronix. I think the update of old and essential posts are very useful to friends who are new to Loronix. There is much to explore in the archives and the updates give better exposition to the best we have available, such like this one, featuring one of the most popular artists in our community. Let’s see.

This is Sylvia Telles – Amor em HI-FI (1960), for Philips, the first album released by Sylvia Telles at Philips, just before the acclaimed Amor de Gente Moca, with Antonio Carlos Jobim repertoire. I like this album, but I think I would like much better if Philips credited more info about. Personnel is totally unknown, including arrangers and musicians in this session with Sylvia Telles performing a repertoire of Bossa Nova standards, a medley with international songs and a Frech version of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Dolores Duran Por Causa de Voce, here as Gardez Moi Pour Toujours. I’m making available a reposting of a video sent by the legendary Mr. E., with Sylvia Telles performing in a Brazilian movie, one of the nicest videos by this great Brazilian diva. Tracks include:

01 – Samba Torto (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
02 – All The Way (Cahn / Hensen) The Boy Next Door (Blaue / Martin) They Can’t Take That Away From Me (George Gershwin / Ira Gershwin)
03 – Corcovado (Tom Jobim)
04 – Tetê (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
05 – Se É Tarde Me Perdoa (Carlos Lyra / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
06 – Chora Tua Tristeza (Oscar Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini)
07 – Dindi (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
08 – Hô-bá-lá-lá (João Gilberto / Aloysio de Oliveira)
09 – Samba de Uma Nota Só (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
10 – Gardez Moi Pour Toujours (Por Causa de Você) (Tom Jobim / Dolores Duran / Vrs. Serge Rodhe)

Joao Gilberto, Sylvia Telles & Dick Farney - Joao Gilberto, Silvia Telles & Dick Farney (1988)

This is a very interesting compilation sent by Dona Iara that it is not listed on any discography, at least the ones that I could check. By the way, several compilations were released in the late 80’s and most of them are pretty unknown. I don’t know if it is a matter of limited editions, but they are really worth checking. This LPs were recorded in the turn of the shift between vinyl to CD and they have a pretty good sound. This one is really obscure featuring remastered tunes of three great artists. Let’s see.

This is Joao Gilberto, Sylvia Telles & Dick Farney – Joao Gilberto, Silvia Telles & Dick Farney (1988), for EMI-Odeon, perfect for those who are giving the first steps towards Brazilian music and want to have in a glance Bossa Nova cuts from three legends. These recordings range from 1957 to 1961, as detailed on track list. Tracks include:

01 – Desafinado – JOAO GILBERTO (1958)
02 – Dindi – SYLVIA TELLES (1959)
03 – Este Seu Olhar – DICK FARNEY (1959)
04 – O Barquinho – JOAO GILBERTO (1961)
05 – A Felicidade – SYLVIA TELLES (1959)
06 – Alguem como Tu – DICK FARNEY (1958)
07 – Insensatez – JOAO GILBERTO (1961)
08 – Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Voce – SYLVIA TELLES (1957)
09 – Corcovado – JOAO GILBERTO (1960)
10 – Copacabana – DICK FARNEY (1958)
11 – Estrada do Sol – SYLVIA TELLES (1958)

Sylvia Telles – Amor de Gente Moca | Musicas de Antonio Carlos Jobim (1959)

I felt the same pleasure when reposting the last Elizeth Cardoso – Noturno (1957), as I had when it was made available for the first time a year ago. I’m also feeling very good on making this one. Amor de Gente Moca is another fantastic record released more than a year ago that was sleeping on a given day of June 2006. It is time to bring this amazingly out of print album to the spotlight, calling attention to Loronix new and old friends. Cover artworks are improved and the music was ripped with zecalouro supervision. FLAC files are also available. Loronixers acclaimed Sylvia Telles in the past and now it is time to celebrate her music again.

This is Sylvia Telles – Amor de Gente Moca | Musicas de Antonio Carlos Jobim (1959), for Odeon. I’m proud to own the Odeon original issue in a very good condition, the reason for this reposting. Sylvia Telles performs with orchestra the Antonio Carlos Jobim repertoire. I do not have knowledge to describe Sylvia Telles singing from a technical perspective, but she has that “thing” that belongs to less than a few gifted singers I have ever heard before. Amor de Gente Moca is directed by Aloysio de Oliveira, arranged by Maestro Gaya and has Orchestra conducted by Maestro Oswaldo Borba. Tracks include:

01 – Dindi (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
02 – De Você Eu Gosto (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
03 – Discussão (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
04 – Sem Você (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
05 – Fotografia (Tom Jobim)
06 – Janelas Abertas (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
07 – Demais (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
08 – O Que Tinha de Ser (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
09 – A Felicidade (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
10 – Canta Canta Mais (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
11 – Só Em Teus Braços (Tom Jobim)
12 – Esquecendo Você (Tom Jobim)

Luiz Bonfa e Sylvia Telles – Luiz Bonfa e Sylvia Telles (1958) | EP

You don’t need to scratch your eyes or check your glasses; it is true, Luiz Bonfa and Sylvia Telles together on recording. Mr. E. made history at Loronix with his last contribution, Copacabana Palace OST with Bonus Tracks, additions and videos. Copacabana Palace alone was enough to instantly admit Mr. E. to Loronix Honor Pantheon. However, the tireless Mr. E strikes again with this unique EP and does not save another jewel for a later time, making together a video with Sylvia Telles that I never saw before. Thanks once again Mr. E., your music is really exciting and you also know the stuff you have.

This is Luiz Bonfa e Sylvia Telles – Luiz Bonfa e Sylvia Telles (1958), for Odeon (EP, BWB 1040). As I said, Mr. E. knows the business, he said this is the outcome of a supposed LP with Sylvia Telles singing Luiz Bonfa repertoire, however, Odeon seems to have aborted the project, making only this EP commercially available. Luiz Bonfa guitar can be heard in all tunes and share vocals with Sylvia Telles on Perdido de Amor.

The video is another Mr. E. trick and is important and exciting as the EP, showing Sylvia Telles performing Demais (Antonio Carlos Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira) at the same Brazilian movie film Mr. E. sent to us, Assassinato em Copacabana. Sylvia Telles is Mr. E. favorite diva and he says she was in her peak. I agree 100% with Mr. E. Sylvinha is really great at this video that you should watch with a great attention as a rare piece. Thanks once again Mr. E. Tracks include:

Sylvia Telles – Demais
.01 – Tanto amor (Luiz Bonfá – Reynaldo Dias Leme)
02 – De braços lassos (Luiz Bonfá)
03 – Meu sonho (Luiz Bonfá)
04 – Perdido de amor (Luiz Bonfá)This is Luiz Bonfa e Sylvia Telles – Luiz Bonfa e Sylvia Telles (1958), at Loronix, by Mr. E.

.

9 – Cancao do vaqueiro
10 – Paz de espirito
11 – Tu bem querer
12 – Outro adeus

Espero que algum dia escutemos o LP na íntegra!

Quanto ao vídeo, ele foi conseguido graças ao nosso amigo AD (Brazilliance). Thanks, AD!

Sylvia Telles sings A Felicidade after a short interview. The quality is not so good but worths the watching.

Hope uEnjoy!

An exceptional date needs and exceptional album. This singer is perhaps the most celebrated at Loronix and for every Bossa Nova enthusiast. Wise of Caetano for taking this tremendous album to our tribute. Big coincidence also, since I could have made this post earlier and the chance of making it on such special date would be lost. I’m happy about this.

This is Sylvia Telles – Sylvia Telles Sings the Wonderful Songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim (1965), for Kapp Records (USA), also released in Brazil by Elenco, MEV-65 as The Music of Mr. Jobim by Sylvia Telles. Sylvia sings in Portuguese and English a repertoire of Antonio Carlos Jobim compositions, produced by Aloysio de Oliveira with Arrangements of Maestro Lindolfo Gaya. I’m just a little bit disappointed of not have a movie of Sylvia Telles available, so I’m posting a nice picture of her that you will find with the music. The cover artwork is one of those things that only Caetano Rodrigues can show us. I want to say thanks to Caetano for the amazing support given to our 48 Hours with Jobim series.

Tracks include:

01 – Useless Lasdcape (Inútil Paisagem) (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira / Vrs. R. Gilbert)
02 – Dreamer (Vivo Sonhando) (Tom Jobim / Vrs. Lees)
03 – Samba Torto (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
04 – Once I Loved (Amor Em Paz) (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes / Vrs. R. Gilbert)
05 – And Roses And Roses ( das Rosas) (Dorival Caymmi / Vrs. R. Gilbert)
06 – Eu Preciso de Você (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
07 – All That’s Left Is To Say Goodbye (Eu Preciso Dizer Adeus) (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes / Vrs. R. Gilbert)
08 – Samba de Uma Nota Só (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
09 – Quiet Nights (Corcovado) (Tom Jobim / Vrs. R. Gilbert)

I have a strong respect and admiration for Dorival Caymmi. Brazilian artists such as Joao Gilberto and Caetano Veloso also consider Caymmi the “root” of the great music we know here at Loronix. I cannot understand why Dorival Caymmi is not celebrated in Brazil and also worldwide as his peers, his sophisticated harmonies, and the way he fit lyrics with melodies with his guitar playing is unique.

Loronix has just a few Dorival Caymmi releases and I think it is time to fill this gap. This is Dorival Caymmi – Caymmi e o Mar (1957), for Odeon, with a different track 01, Historia de Pescadores with Dorival Caymmi, Silvinha Telles, Lenita Bruno, Odaléa Sodré Fernandes and Consuelo Sierra singing together several songs like a story. Caymmi e o Mar has orchestra arrangements by the Maestro Leo Peracchi e Sua Orquestra. Tracks include:

01 – “História de Pescadores” with Canção da Partida (Dorival Caymmi) — Adeus da Esposa (Dorival Caymmi) — Temporal (Dorival Caymmi) — Cantiga de Noiva (Dorival Caymmi) — Velório Val (Dorival Caymmi) — Na Manhã Seguinte (Dorival Caymmi)
02 – O Mar (Dorival Caymmi)
03 – Dois de Fevereiro (Dorival Caymmi)
04 – O Vento (Dorival Caymmi)
05 – Saudades de Itapuã (Dorival Caymmi)

You have probably read on previous post that zecalouro has a very good friend that uses to place some recommendations for Loronix. Yesterday, we were talking about the essential Brazilian concerts, specially those ones where several different artists perform together.

These shows are legendary for Brazilian music and some of them are already available at Loronix. Check those out on previous posts. Do not forget to reach the previous months archives at the right panel. So, let’s get back with another and important one, Reencontro from Elenco (1966), an wonderful set featuring Sylvia Telles, Edu Lobo, Tamba Trio and Quinteto Villa Lobos, which is a woodwind classical group. The outcome is great, Sylvia voice is light and sweet, a young Edu is on guitar and voice and Tamba Trio takes the ownership of their mighty swing bossa rhythm section.

Nice blend of another legendary meeting from the 60’s. Stay now with Reencontro (1966), at Loronix.

There is no much info available on old EPs, perhaps this is the reason why zecalouro does not like to post EPs very often. The old EPs are also like 78 rpm recordings, the cover artwork are simple, sometimes with a unique layout for diferent artists.

Since Sylvia Telles is on of Loronix favorites, zecalouro is making available this 1966 EP, Elenco CE-27, where Sylvia sings Nao Quero ver Voce Triste and then Canto de Paz with his brother Mario Telles. Tracks include:

01 – Não Quero Ver Você Triste (Roberto Carlos / Erasmo Carlos)
02 – Canto De Paz (Marco Antônio / Nelson Lins e Barros)

Carlos Lyra, Lais, Lucio Alves, Silvinha Telles, Vinicius de Morais e Conjunto Oscar Castro Neves – Bossa Nova Mesmo (1960)

1 09 2011

When zecalouro received this LP, came to his mind that it was another various artists or compilation. Big mistake, perhaps this can be considered one of the first Bossa Nova albums. Produced by Aloisio de Oliveira and arranged by Oscar Castro Neves, this LP was recorded with one purpose in mind, to introduce Bossa Nova and its main artists to the public.

O Conjunto de Oscar Castro Neves plays in all tracks. This also landmarks the first time Vinicius de Moraes puts his voice on a record in his career. Just to the records, this LP features Conjunto de Oscar Castro Neves, Carlos Lyra, Lais, Lucio Alves, Sylvia Telles and Vinicius de Moraes.

There is only one thing that disturbs zecalouro, the cover. How should they make a record to introduce such a bright and happy music with such a dark and serious artwork? Tracks include:

01 – So em Teus Bracos – Oscar Castro Neves (Antonio Carlos Jobim)
02 – Pela Luz dos Olhos Teus – Vinicius de Moraes (Vinicius de Moraes)
03 – Eu Tambem Preciso de Voce – Oscar Castro Neves (Sylvia Telles)
04 – Obrigada meu Bem – Sylvia Telles (Sylvia Telles / Aloysio de Oliveira)
05 – Chora tua Tristeza – Oscar Castro Neves (Oscar Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini)
06 – Com Voce – Sylvia Telles (Julio Hungria)
07 – Patinho Feio – Lais (Oscar Castro Neves / Dolores Duran)
08 – Bim Bom – Oscar Castro Neves (Joao Gilberto)
09 – Tem do de Mim – Carlos Lyra (Carlos Lyra)

There is nothing to add on this post. We spoke a lot about Sylvia Telles and even about her daughter Claudia. I’ve been browsing Ruy Castro’s Bossa Nova books a couple of minutes ago. Now I can understand better how people were impacted by the time Sylvia has passed so young.
