Hello, good evening! I’m confident that many friends will be surprised with this album, such like us. I’m saying us because my transfers are now different from the way it was. Now I have an audience, a small, but very influent audience. They try to influence my choices and also make recommendations for future releases by digging my collection. This album provoked a very interest reaction on my small board of advisors, as soon as the transfer ended, they requested another spin, which was an appropriate request, this record is really amazing, Tito Madi and the surprising Nelly Martins worked as a team delivering a beauty of an album that you cannot miss. Let’s see.

This is Nelly Martins & Tito Madi – Encontro no Sabado (1959), for Continental. The information available about Nelly Martins was very limited on my computer and something very strange happened when I started searching Google. The website which provided better details on Nelly Martins was Loronix, really. Nelly Martins appears on a very old challenge post accompanied by Lúcio Alves, Johnny Alf and and Tito Madi, available here or at the picture in your left.

Additionally, Loronix comment section told me that Nelly Martins was married with the mighty Maestro Radames Gnattali, which is also the arranger of Encontro no Sabado.

Nelly Martins did not leave many records, only some 78RPMs and two LPs, Encontro no Sabado (this album) and an amazing instrumental piano album recorded in duo with Radames Gnattali, Radames Gnattali & Nelly Martins – Piano Duo (1967). What a nice story. Nelly Gnattali is also a gifted pianist and today works on preserving the memory of Radames Gnattali. Part of her work is available at Radames Gnattali official website, here. And as a last minute information, I found a YouTube video with Nelly Martins singing and Radames Gnattali performing at the piano, here. I said this post is amazing! Tracks include:

01 – Encontro no Sábado (Tito Madi / Georges Henry)
02 – Se (Mário Albanese / Nagib Nader)
03 – Quero-te Assim (Tito Madi)
04 – Faz Tanto Tempo (Tito Madi)
05 – Por Que (Pedro Dellober)
06 – És Tu (Domicio Augusto / Milton Silva)
07 – Eu e Você (Tito Madi)
08 – Esquece-me (Gabriel Migliori / Hélio Prado)
09 – Olha-me Diga-me (Tito Madi)
10 – Palavras ao Vento (Sergio Malta)
11 – Que Coisa Louca (C’est Magnifique) (Cole Porter / Vrs. João de Barro)
12 – Tu e Eu (Altamiro Carrilho / Armando Nunes)

Tito Madi_Tito Madi - Sua Voz... Suas Composições_1958_front

Hello, good evening! It is amazing that even after 2 years Loronix is still capable of revealing never released albums of very important artists. I believe that only a few friends had the chance to hear this album, recorded by Tito Madi in partnership with Maestro Rafael Puglielli in 1958 and never released on CD. Another awesome Jorge Mello contribution, which I would like to say thanks for keeping us amazed with really nice music and content. Let’s see.

This is Tito Madi – Sua Voz… Suas Composicoes (1958), for Continental, featuring only Tito Madi compositions and Maestro Rafael Puglielli performs solo with orchestra on tracks 01 and 07 and probably delivers accompaniment to Tito Madi across the whole session. Little I know about this really hard to find album, such as all others recorded by Tito Madi in the late 50’s. Tracks include:

01 – Rio Triste (Tito Madi) Fui Procurar Distração (Tito Madi) with Rafael Puglielli e Sua Orquestra
02 – Quando a Chuva Não Vem (Tito Madi)
03 – Senhorita (Tito Madi)
04 – Rio Triste (Tito Madi)
05 – Joguete de Amor (Tito Madi / Georges Henry)
06 – Cansei de Ilusões (Tito Madi)
07 – Chove Lá Fora (Tito Madi) Olha-me Diga-me (Tito Madi) with Rafael Puglielli e Sua Orquestra
08 – Fui Procurar Distração (Tito Madi)
09 – Fracassos de Amor (Tito Madi / Milton Silva)
10 – Olha-me Diga-me (Tito Madi)
11 – Canto do Engraxate (Tito Madi)

Tito Madi - A Fossa Vol. 2 (1972)

Tito Madi - A Fossa Vol. 2 (1972)-BACK

Let’s start the music showing the second out of the four albums recorded by Tito Madi on his “A Fossa” sequel. The other three volumes were made available during this year ( Vol. 1, Vol. 3 e Vol. 4) and they had a nice response from Loronixers. This is a great series, but the name “A Fossa” does not help much. Tito Madi performs a great repertoire on all these four LPs, including artists that were just appearing to public by that time, such as Secos & Molhados. Let’s see.

This is Tito Madi – A Fossa Vol. 2 (1972), for London. This cover is great, including the back cover with Tito Madi as a giant among the girls, but I still prefer the one made for the first volume, the pink one also released on different colors on top of the same artwork. Tito Madi performs some of his own compositions, Bossa Nova standards and a very nice Caetano Veloso composition, Coracao Vagabundo. Once again, personnel listing is not credited. Tracks include:

01 – Chove La Fora (Tito Madi)
02 – Minha (Francis Hime / Ruy Guerra)
03 – Por Causa de Você (Tom Jobim / Dolores Duran)
04 – Alguém Como Tu (José Maria de Abreu / Jair Amorim)
05 – Coração Vagabundo (Caetano Veloso)
06 – Pra Machucar Meu Coração (Ary Barroso)
07 – Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
08 – Neste Mesmo Lugar (Armando Cavalcanti / Klécius Caldas)
09 – Vem Hoje (Moacir Silva / Antônio Maria)
10 – Por Favor Ligue a Vitrola (Tito Madi)
11 – Molambo (Jaime Florence “Meira” / Augusto Mesquita)
12 – Chove Outra Vez (Tito Madi / Romeo Nunes) – E a Chuva Parou (Ribamar / Esdras Pereira da Silva / Victor Freire)

Yesterday, my Internet connection got lost in the middle of the night and I could not make the final post of the day, being back only a couple of hours ago. That’s why I’m back in the middle of this Wednesday to show friends another recorded by Tito Madi in the “A Fossa” series, the last album from the sequel. Let’s see.

This is Tito Madi – Cancao de Amor | A Fossa Vol. 4 (1974), for London. It was nice to hear Tito Madi rendition to Sangue Latino, a 1974 blockbuster by Secos e Molhados, he made it really different from the original. Little I know about personnel in this recording session and it seems it is a rule at the sequel, although we could not check what we have at A Fossa Vol. 2, which is the one with the nicest cover. Tracks include:

01 – Canção de Amor (Elano de Paula / Chocolate)
02 – Até Quem Sabe (Mercedes Chies / João Donato / Lysias Ênio)
03 – Maria (Ary Barroso / Luis Peixoto)
04 – Pede Passagem (Sidney Miller)
05 – Nada Mais Lindo (Tito Madi)
06 – Sangue Latino (João Ricardo / Paulinho Mendonça)
07 – Suas Mãos (Antônio Maria / Pernambuco)
08 – Foi Ela (Ary Barroso)
09 – Valsa de Uma Cidade (Ismael Netto / Antônio Maria)
10 – Canto Puro Amor (Tito Madi)
11 – Samba Canção Antigo (Tito Madi)
12 – Vem É Primavera (Tito Madi / Arnoldo Medeiros)

Tonight was a long fight against hosting availability. I thought I could not make this awaited last post today. Videos are probably down and the ones scheduled for today were not released. I wish I could afford a better hosting to provide a better service to our community.

Anyway, what really matters are the friends we have at Loronix, friends such like the mighty bossanovadreamer. He sent this album to Loronixers, perhaps one of the most obscure Tito Madi albums. Thanks to bossanovadreamer. Let’s see.

This is Tito Madi – Tito Madi em Nova Dimensao (1968), for RCA Victor, the first and only album recorded by Tito Madi for RCA Victor studio. I have been wondering if there is a connection with the fact of this album being one of the hardest to find Tito Madi releases. The bossanovadreamer likes it very much and I also have Tito Madi em Nova Dimensao among my favorites. Attention to tracks 05 – Franqueza and 06 – Sem Ter que Chorar by Mario Telles and Mario Castro Neves, also in charge of arrangements. Tracks include:

01 – São Paulo de Trem (Tito Madi)
02 – A Mesma História Antiga (Tito Madi / Mário Telles)
03 – Lindo (Rildo Hora)
04 – Pra Saber o Que É Voltar (Nonato Buzar / Sergio Bittencourt)
05 – Franqueza (Denis Brean / Osvaldo Guilherme)
06 – Sem Ter Que Chorar (Mário Castro Neves / Mário Telles)
07 – Chove Outra Vez (Tito Madi / Romeo Nunes)
08 – Roda de Samba (Tito Madi)
09 – Helena Helena Helena (Alberto Land)
10 – Vou Acabar Com Esta Tristeza (Tito Madi)
11 – A Volta (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)

I never gave the deserved attention to this album and I decided to give it a spin tonight. The first track worth the admission price. Perhaps the last time I heard Maysa was months ago, when her voice spread over the house I started feeling great and the tracks with Maysa, Tito Madi, Maysa, Tito Madi, etc. makes it very nice to hear. I don’t have idea if these tracks were released before on regular albums, but I’m sure RCA made a great repertoire selection. Let’s see.

This is Maysa & Tito Madi – Dois Na Fossa (1975), for RCA Candem. There are some very good tracks on Dois na Fossa. Fantasia de Trombones and Fantasia de Cellos are performed by Maysa and each one brings three songs. They are great. Tito Madi performs some tunes of the almost impossible to find Tito Madi – Tito Madi em Nova Dimensao (1968), they are: Helena, Helena, Helena, Franqueza, A Mesma Historia Antiga, Sem Ter Que Chorar and others. Tracks include:

01 – “Fantasia de Trombones” Demais / Meu Mundo Caiu / Preciso Aprender a Ser Só – Maysa
02 – Helena Helena Helena – Tito Madi
03 – Ne Me Quitte Pas – Maysa
04 – A Mesma História Antiga – Tito Madi
05 – Canção Sem Título – Maysa
06 – Sem Ter Que Chorar – Tito Madi
07 – “Fantasia de Cellos” Primavera / Eurídice / Canção do Amanhecer – Maysa
08 – Franqueza – Tito Madi
09 – Just In Time – Maysa
10 – Chove Outra Vez – Tito Madi
11 – Morrer de Amor – Maysa
12 – Lindo – Tito Madi

I was not scheduling another album from Tito Madi series of four “A Fossa” albums, but it is so cold in Brazil and Tito Madi fits nicely on cold days such like we are having here. This is perhaps one of the less known album from the series and in my point of view the best of the four ones. I’m sure we have a great close for this cold Friday.

This is Tito Madi – A Fossa Vol. 3 (1973), for London. Just a nerd curiosity, Volume numbers match the release year, making things easy, such as Volume 1 was released in 1971, Volume 2 in 1972, this one and the final Volume 4 in 1974. This cover is beautiful, although is not the one that I like most in the series, in the other hand, the back cover is fantastic. Let’s think about a contest of A Fossa cover artwork when we make the last. Let’s be straightforward, Tito Madi is here and it is cold outside, time to go to bed. Have a nice weekend and don’t miss tomorrow’s posts, Loronix amazing Samba day. Tracks include:

01 – Canto Triste (Edu Lobo / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 – Duas Contas (Garoto)
03 – Atrás da Porta (Francis Hime / Chico Buarque)
04 – Quero-te Assim (Tito Madi)
05 – Encontro Com a Saudade (Billy Blanco / Nilo Queiroz)
06 – Se Eu Tiver (Ribamar (1) / Dolores Duran)
07 – Graças a Deus Você Voltou (Tito Madi)
08 – Fossa Vol 3 (Tito Madi)
09 – Manias (Flávio Cavalcanti / Celso Cavalcanti)
10 – Demais (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
11 – Canção dos Olhos Tristes (Tito Madi)
12 – Modinha (Sergio Bittencourt)
13 – Siga (Fernando Lobo / Hélio Guimarães)

Tito Madi – A Fossa (1971)

In one of those quick polls I use to make showing post alternatives to friends, the great GK said something very important, he said that Tito Madi deserves more posts at Loronix. I agree with GK, so I decided to start with what is considered Tito Madi most successful and important albums, the first out of the four of his A Fossa series, recoded respectively in 1971, 1972, 1973, and 1974 for London, which is a subsidiary of Odeon.

This is Tito Madi – A Fossa (1971), for London. For a long time, I though this “A Fossa” series was dedicated to the same A Fossa style, which is a kind of romantic Samba Cancao with influences of Boleros and American Ballads. However, Fossa is the name of a nightclub in Rio de Janeiro where Tito Madi performed several years in the 70’s. This series brings these fantastic phsychodelic covers that you cannot stop starring and finding new details. Let’s see how Loronixers feedback this release. Tracks include:

01 – Apelo (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 – Pra Dizer Adeus (Edu Lobo / Torquato Neto)
03 – Canção da Volta (Ismael Netto / Antônio Maria)
04 – Cansei de Ilusões (Tito Madi)
05 – De Onde Vens (Dori Caymmi / Nelson Motta)
06 – Chuvas de Verão (Fernando Lobo)
07 – Sonho e Saudade (Tito Madi)
08 – Esquecendo Você (Tom Jobim)
09 – Pra Você (Silvio César)
10 – Eu e a Brisa (Johnny Alf)
11 – Fiz do Amor Meu Canto (Tito Madi / William Prado)
12 – Reverso (Marino Pinto / Gilberto Milfont) Se o Tempo Entendesse (Marino Pinto / Mário Rossi) Sucedeu Assim (Tom Jobim / Marino Pinto)

This is a contribution of a great enthusiast of the music from Brazil, a great enthusiast of Loronix and a very good friend of zecalouro, the legendary bossanovadreamer, one of the first bloggers who created and maintained a blog dedicated to Bossa Nova at bossanovadreamer dedicated this post to so many people that I will not list them here, I will just dedicate to Loronixers, which is everybody who stay connected with our community. Thanks bossanovadreamer, the effort you put on Brazilian music cause has no parallel.

This is Tito Madi – Amor e Paz (1963), for Entre/CBS, with orchestra arrangements, direction and conduction by Astor Silva. Self-explanatory release awaited by many Loronixers. I received a message from a friend saying that Loronix needs to approach more Tito Madi albums. I agree, Tito Madi discography is huge, mainly from the late 50’s to 60’s where he released almost fifteen LPs and 10-inches. Thanks for this one, bossanovadreamer. Tracks include:

01 – Jogado Fora (João Mello)
02 – Amor e Paz (Tito Madi)
03 – Com o Amor Não Se Brinca (Romeo Nunes / Carlito)
04 – Ah Se Eu Pudesse (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
05 – A Mesma Rosa Amarela (Capiba / Carlos Penna Filho)

I think that everybody knows that the Brazilian pianist Pedrinho Mattar has passed today at the age of 70, Sao Paulo state Santos city. It is disturbing because I had the chance today several of Pedrinho Mattar out of print records. Now I’m sad without a single Pedrinho Mattar album for a tribute. Pedrinho Mattar is great, part of my childhood memories and an important musician that build part of my decision to be also a musician with his TV shows. Probably Caetano will send us a good Pedrinho Mattar LP for a late, but proper homage to this great musician.

Stay with this great Tito Madi record, already scheduled to close the day. I spoke with Caetano about this record and he was very happy to see Sonho e Esperanca at Loronix. bossanovadreamer also gave nice feedback on this album, saying that it is among his Tito Madi favorites.

This is Tito Madi – Sonho e Esperanca (1961), for Columbia, with Orquestra lead by Maestro Lyrio Panicalli and Astor Silva. Tracks include:

01 – Sonho e Esperança (Sergio Malta)
02 – Quero Paz (Ricardo Galeno / Cirene Mendonça)
03 – Canção de Acordar Você (Tito Madi)

05 – Meu Amor Perdão (Ivon Cury)
06 – Dormir Sonhar (Vadico / Herberto Sales)
07 – Amor e Paz (Tito Madi)
08 – Que Sabe Você de Adeus (Tito Madi)

Hello, Good Night! 2007 is having a fast start in terms of work and Loronix. This makes zecalouro feels very happing and willing to share and work hard to make a better Loronix to all his friends. Some great stuff is being prepared by zecalouro to please Loronixers during the forthcoming half of this year. It will be amazing.

I received a tip from our friend Caio at CBox to post this LP, when I get back now to pick his name and write his line, the friend Lula asked if Caetano could give this LP to zeca. Very good and friendly conversation. Caetano has this record, but zecalouro has also this time. Let’s address these friends’ requests.

This is Claudette Soares – Fiz do Amor o Meu Canto (1976), for Odeon, Claudette Soares tribute to Tito Madi with all songs by Tito Madi. Just as Caio said, there are great arrangements supporting Claudette Soares interpretation for Tito Madi compositions, unfortunately, I could not track who is in charge of the arrangements. Anyway, this is a great start for this rainy Saturday in Rio de Janeiro that I hope you will appreciated just as our friends should. Tracks include:

01 – Cansei de Ilusões (Tito Madi)
02 – Quero-te Assim (Tito Madi)
03 – Sonho e Saudade (Tito Madi)
04 – Não Diga Não (Tito Madi / Georges Henry)
05 – Fracassos de Amor (Tito Madi / Milton Silva)
06 – Gauchinha Bem-querer (Tito Madi)
07 – Fiz do Amor Meu Canto (Tito Madi / William Prado)
08 – Chove Lá Fora (Tito Madi)
09 – Canção dos Olhos Tristes (Tito Madi)
10 – Carinho e Amor (Tito Madi)

I was thinking about the best post to close the day – What a great day with those amazing photos provided by Jean Yves – when suddenly the rain started. It was what I need to remember and decide to share with Loronixers another wonderful album provided by Caetano. The only problem was to make the cover scans when I remembered that the lamp I use to make the photos was broken. The passion of music never stops us; I left the house with a heavy rain just to buy a new lamp.

Now I’m wet, but prepared to present Tito Madi – Chove La Fora (1957), for Copacabana, the first Tito Madi 10″ record. What a nice record, great cover artwork with 8 tracks to fit the 10″ format. Tito Madi has the help of his favorite pianist Ribamar e Seu Conjunto, complemented by the great Chiquinho do Acordeon, Carlinhos on guitar, Lincoln (Ed Lincoln?) on bass and Julinho on drums, all highlighted below. Thanks Caetano for always amazes us with these impossible to find albums. Check personnel and tracks.

Tito Madi – Romance (1961)

And the last post goes to… Tito Madi – Romance (1961). Why zecalouro is saying that? Easy, as day passes, it has been really hard to decide the last post. Today, the choices were all great, solid records from end to end, but Tito Madi was selected.

Actually, I was planning the first Tito Madi LP, A Saudade Mata a Gente (1958), but the cover available here is not on a good resolution, great disappointment. Anyway you will have a lot to discover in Romance, a nice LP with Maestro Lyrio Panicali helping Tito with orchestra and chorus arrangements. A truly beautiful record that I hope you like. If you have the cover artwork of A Saudade Mata a Gente, feel free to share with us; it is another great Tito Madi LP. Tracks include:

01 – A Menina Sonha Azul (Tito Madi)
02 – A Canção da Esperança (Luis Arruda Paes / Ribeiro Filho)
03 – Ternura Antiga (Dolores Duran / Ribamar)
04 – Malagueña (Elpídio Ramirez / Pedro Galindo)
05 – Cansaço (Ruy Barros)
06 – Pedrinhas de Cor (Armando Nunes / Cícero Nunes)
07 – Ai de Mim (Capiba)
08 – Amor Em Pedaços (Gilberto Panicali / Fernando César)
09 – Nunca Me Esqueça (Never Forget Me) (D. Powell / Vrs. Tito Madi)
10 – Mi Dicha Lejana (E. Ayala Baez)
11 – A Voz dos Sinos (Othon Russo / Nazareno de Brito)

Mr. X strikes again and makes zecalouro remembers a missing Brazilian artist, Tito Madi, singer, composer, a true genius that started in the 50’s and continues performing his art in the 21st century.

As we are getting used with Mr. X selections, he made his best this time with Tito Madi – De Amor se Fala (1964) with several well-know Bossa Nova classics and arrangements in charge of the Maestro Lyrio Panicali, which guarantees a nice quality music. zecalouro is making available AMG bio for complimentary information on Tito Madi. Tracks include:

01 – Ah Eu Não Sei (Tito Madi)
02 – Se Meu Coração Pedir (Tito Madi)
03 – Balanço Zona Sul (Tito Madi)
04 – Final Sem Adeus (Romeo Nunes)
05 – Canção Praieira (Tito Madi / Luis Peixoto)
06 – Chove Lá Fora (Tito Madi)
07 – Vai e Diz Adeus (Tito Madi)
08 – Garota Paulista (Tito Madi)
09 – Rio Triste (Tito Madi)
10 – Meu Mar (Romeo Nunes / Tito Madi)
11 – De Amor Se Fala (Tito Madi)
12 – Rio Moço (Tito Madi / Luis Peixoto)

One of the singers and composers of the samba-canção era intuitively connected with the soon-to-be stylistic revolution of bossa nova, Tito Madi anticipated several features of this movement in the sophisticated harmonies of his influential compositions and relaxed vocal renditions, recorded on 44 albums. His first big hit and one of his biggest ever, “Chove Lá Fora” was recorded in 1957, and was also highly praised by critics and awarded several times. The song was also recorded with success by the Platters and Della Reese in the U.S. under the title “It’s Raining Outside.” The Platters also recorded his “Quero-te Assim” (“I Wish”) and “Rio Triste” (“Sad River”). “Balanço Zona Sul” is another of his most important classics, followed by “Menina Moça” (Luís Antônio), “Canção dos Olhos Tristes,” “Chove Outra Vez” (with Romeu Nunes), “Sonho e Saudade,” and “Amor e Paz.”

He started playing music early and was interested in an artistic career by age six. Madi already was one of the directors of the local radio station (Rádio Pirajuí) at 18. “Eu Espero Você,” his first composition, was written when he was 20, and four years later his valse “Eu e Você” was recorded by Os Quatro Amigos. In 1952, he was hired by Tupi (São Paulo) and worked there for two years before he was appointed Revelation Singer of the Year for his recording of his compositions “Pirajuí” and “Não Diga Não,” both written with Georges Henri. Moving to Rio de Janeiro, he became a crooner in several hot nightclubs in a period that the traditional repertory of those venues was being highly influenced by jazz. Among his most important albums it can be mentioned the four volumes of his A Fossa, recorded respectively in 1971, 1972, 1973, and 1974. He continues to perform, and signed with the Dubas label in 2001, the same year he released Ilhas Cristais.
