Hello! This is another surprising chapter of Historia da MPB collection by Abril Cultural. Actually, this is from 1977 Nova Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira, a second and revised edition of the original and first issued in the very beginning of the 1970’s. I always thought how would be the chapter dedicated to Antonio Carlos Jobim and it is better than my expectations. This cover, with a very unusual picture of Jobim and the back cover with the Maestro playing flute lying on the roof with the city around justified the wait. I always heard all issues from this collection were easy to find, but I think this is an exception. Let’s see.

This is Antonio Carlos Jobim – Nova Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira (1977), for Abril Cultural, featuring highlights of Jobim repertoire performed by Antonio Carlos Jobim and others, such like Joao Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto, Stan Getz, Agostinho dos Santos, Dick Farney, Lucio Alves, Sylvia Telles and Elis Regina. This is a great album for those who want to know Jobim music at a glance. There are some important tracks here, such like 02 – Chega de Saudade and 03 – Desafinado, taken from Joao Gilberto debut LP recorded in 1958, featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim with orchestra. This series is really addictive and probably we will have a sequel in the forthcoming weeks. Tracks include:

Milton Banana - Milton Banana Trio - Ao Meu Amigo Tom - Samba É Isso Vol. 4

Hello, good evening! As we are getting older, it seems the time goes faster. This album was first released at Loronix in August 2006. It is a lot of time, we are very close to reach 2009, but from my perspective, this album was made available a couple of months ago. Milton Banana released tribute records featuring music of his friends Chico Buarque, Vinicius de Moraes and Antonio Carlos Jobim, which is in my opinion the best of these tribute albums. Let’s see.

This is Milton Banana Trio – Ao Meu Amigo Tom | Samba e Isso Volume 4 (1980), for RCA Victor. The formula is the same used on other tributes, instrumental renditions of Antonio Carlos Jobim music featuring pairs of tunes on each track. Ao Meu Amigo Tom has fifteen tracks and 32 Antonio Carlos Jobim compositions. If you want to know more about Milton Banana, the creator of Bossa Nova drumming style, please head to Enciclopedia following this link Milton Banana. Tracks include:

Gal Costa, Tom Jobim - Gabriela

Hello, good evening! I think I’m getting older very fast this year and losing my good memory for albums. I was looking for something by Maestro Antonio Carlos Jobim and I did not remember this soundtrack as Jobim’s regular career album. By the way, this post was only possible with the help of the mysterious friend and his huge and amazing collection made available to Loronix community. This is Loronix tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim years passing in 08 December 1994. Antonio Carlos Jobim will be missed forever. Let’s see.

This is Antonio Carlos Jobim – Gabriela | Trilha Sonora Original (1983), for RCA, featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim and Gal Costa, based on Jorge Amado Gabriela, Cravo & Canela novel. Gabriela should not be taken as TV Globo soup opera soundtrack released in 1975 by Som Livre, Gabriela belongs to the 1983 film, directed by Bruno Barreto and starred by Sonia Braga — the “original” 1975 Gabriela — and Marcelo Mastroianni. I did not see this film, but the soundtrack is really pleasant, featuring arrangements by Oscar Castro Neves with Tom and Gal Costa singing and performing together in a few tracks. Loronix Preview Center peak is the opening track, an instrumental tune by Jobim which alone worth the whole record. Tracks include:

1. Chegada dos Retirantes
(Tom Jobim)
Intérprete(s): Instrumental

2. Tema de Amor de Gabriela
(Tom Jobim)
Intérprete(s): Gal Costa / Tom Jobim

3. Pulando Carniça

4. Pensando na Vida

5. Casório

6. Origem

8. Caminho da Mata

9. Ilhéus

10. Tema de Amor de Gabriela

Hello, good evening! I would like to give my sincere apologies for a non-planned hiatus during the whole weekend. We are in the final stages for launching of a new website. It is not necessary to say this website is about Brazilian music and especially about Brazilian musicians. It is an amazing project, which will pay back all the effort we are putting in these final days. Stay tuned.

Speaking about this album, don’t let the appearances cheat you as I was. I always thought this record as a given reissue of the essential Antonio Carlos Jobim and Billy Blanco’s Sinfonia do Rio de Janeiro, released for the first time by Continental in 1954. In fact it is. Side A features a remastered version of the whole 1954 album. However, Continental delivers remastered cuts taken from 78rpms with very important recordings, and this is what makes this album a winner. Let’s see.

This is Tom Jobim e Billy Blanco – Serie Idolos MPB 7 (1974), for Continental, featuring a constellation of Brazilian artists performing Sinfonia do Rio de Janeiro on side A and really nice Continental 78rpm remasterings featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim music performed by Luiz Bonfa, Dick Farney, Lucio Alves, Nora Ney, Dora Lopes and Doris Monteiro. Antonio Carlos Jobim also performs in these tracks with his “Conjunto” and orchestra, as detailed on track list information below. Tracks include:

Tom Jobim, Eumir Deodato & Lindolpho Gaya - Apresenta (Love, Strings and Jobim)

Hello, good morning! I will be out of home tonight, that’s why I’m making this extraordinary post this morning. By the way, a extraordinary post of a unusual album recorded in 1966 by Elenco with the original title as “Antonio Carlos Jobim Apresenta” and reissued in 1975 as “Love, Strings and Jobim | The Eloquence of Antonio Carlos Jobim”, a lust and cheat title with Antonio Carlos Jobim holding his violao at the beach. I said cheat title? Sure! Let’s know why!

This is Eumir Deodato & Lindolpho Gaya – Love, Strings and Jobim | The Eloquence of Antonio Carlos Jobim (1966), for Elenco, featuring a constellation of Brazilian musicians with a single and important exception, which is Antonio Carlos Jobim that did not take part of this recording session. I’ve been wondering how many friends took this album as Antonio Carlos Jobim career record across four decades. Aloysio de Oliveira and Ray Gilbert’s idea was to introduce new artists to the American audience through Antonio Carlos Jobim popularity in US. Maestro Lindolpho Gaya and Eumir Deodato were invited to write the arrangements and to be credited as main performers, which is something that never happened. I’m crediting both as main performers at this post; at least Loronix makes it as originally conceived.

Additionally, the back cover features pictures of the composers, not the musicians. Tracks include:

Hello, good evening! This is the first out of a series of albums recorded by Jaime Alem and Nair Candia for CID, under a series named “Talento Brasileiro”. I think the first who spoke with me about this series was the might Mr. D&C, a long time ago. I confess that with no help from my friends I could never take these albums in consideration. The main performers are not credited at the front cover and it is necessary to go across the back cover to realize this is a career album of Jaime & Nair, which I did not know before taking this album. Jaime & Nair albums are sought after by many collectors, especially outside of Brazil. It is time to check what they have to offer. Let’s see.

This is Jaime Alem & Nair Candia – Serie Talento Brasileiro 4 – As Musicas de Tom Jobim (1978), for CID, featuring a repertoire of Antonio Carlos Jobim tunes. As Musicas de Tom Jobim work very nice as a perfect counterpoint to previous Loronix releases, mostly instrumentals. Jaime Alem is in charge of arrangements and Nair Candia for voice, delivered here by a chorus. It will be really important if you leave your feedback on this release, Jaime & Nair recorded other albums for CID in the same concept featuring tunes by Milton Nascimento, Chico Buarque and probably additional ones, not yet identified. Tracks include:

Lenita Bruno - Por Toda a Minha Vida

It is amazing how maturity makes us take things from a different perspective. That’s the feeling I had when took this album again for a hearing, perhaps after more than a decade interval. My previous opinion was of a dated album, which got stuck in time through a style of interpretation and arrangements that was out of my preferences. However, since the day Jose Matos gave it to our community, I take it for a spin every day. Thank you again Jose Matos. Now it is time to show it to Loronixers. Let’s see.

This is Lenita Bruno e Orquestra – Musica: Antonio Carlos Jobim, Poesia: Vinicius de Moraes | Por Toda Minha Vida (1959), for Festa, featuring arrangements by Maestro Leo Peracchi, Lenita Bruno’s husband at that time and not credited at the album due contractual obligations with Odeon. It is really nice to hear very different renditions of well-known Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes music with the beautiful Lenita Bruno lyric singing with the reduced, but perfectly adequate arrangements by Maestro Leo Peracchi. Maestro Radames Gnattali plays piano at Canta, Canta Mais, which is the track selected to Loronix Preview Center. I made several attempts to clean the back cover with no success; it brings liner notes by Antonio Carlos Jobim. You will find a version with no image processing inside the music. If someone skilled on Photoshop can make it, I will really appreciate.

Encontro Jobim Piazzolla (1988)

jobimpiazzolla

I cannot remember how many requests I have received by friends searching for “The album that Jobim recorded with Piazzolla” or “the record they play together”. I explain that both never had the chance to perform together and the root cause of the misunderstanding was an album recorded in tribute of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Astor Piazzolla. People did not get convinced with my explanations, but now I think everybody will understand, courtesy of the mighty JOAO-SP that kindly sent this album on perfect conditions to our community. Thanks once again JOAO-SP. Let’s see.

This is Orquestra de Camera de Blumenau – Jobim & Piazzolla | Encontro (1988), for Basf, featuring two different situations on a single album, Side A brings Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes compositions, performed by Orquestra de Camera de Blumenau with arrangements by Maestro Guerra Peixe, while Side B is dedicated to Astor Piazzolla, performed by the same Orchestra with arrangements in charge of Jose Bragatto. This album is much better than my best estimates, both sessions are unique with Orquestra de Camera de Blumenal conduced by Norton Morozowicz, also in charge of art direction. Loronix Preview Center brings a selected tune by Antonio Carlos Jobim and an additional track with Astor Piazzolla music. Tracks include:

01 – Canta, Canta Mais (Antonio Carlos Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 – Sem Voce (Antonio Carlos Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
03 – Por Toda a Minha Vida (Antonio Carlos Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)

Tom Jobim & Billy Blanco - Sinfonia do Rio de Janeiro (1960)

SinfoniaDoRioA research was needed to complete understand this album, which is the reissue of the second recording made by Continental of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Billy Blanco Sinfonia do Rio de Janeiro. Continental made the first Sinfonia do Rio de Janeiro recording in 1954 using the 10-inch format. Continental made it again in 1960, using different performers and taking advantage of the 12-inch format, including more tracks on Side B, an extended version of Sinfonia do Rio de Janeiro on Side A with a whole group of new performers compared with the ones in the 1954 session. This is the 1981 reissue of the 1960 session, an album that I did not know the existence and should amaze everybody, such as I was amazed when found it on one of those R$ 1,00 boxes. Let’s see.

This is Antonio Carlos Jobim & Billy Blanco – Sinfonia do Rio de Janeiro (1960), for Continental, presented here with the 1981 Continental reissue, featuring Radames Gnattali arrangements, orchestra and a constellation of performers, including Maysa, Os Cariocas, Severino Filho, Jamelao, Ted Moreno, among others. Loronix Preview Center brings track 03 – Copacabana, performed by Maysa. Tracks include:

Antonio Carlos Jobim - Tom Jobim e Convidados (1985)

48jobimHere we go on Loronix tribute to the 81st birthday of Maestro Antonio Carlos Jobim. I have been wondering how different world be the music and the world if Antonio Carlos Jobim did not leave this world so early, it is something that makes me feel really sad. I remember last year at Loronix when we made with the help of Caetano Rodrigues a great event to celebrate The Maestro music, 48 Hours of Tom Jobim, which is part of Loronix permanent exhibition hall, always reachable using 48 Hours of Tom Jobim logo at our sidebar, also reproduced in your left for easy access.

This is Antonio Carlos Jobim – Tom Jobim e Convidados (1985), for Philips, featuring a compilation of selected Antonio Carlos Jobim songs recorded with very special guests, such like Elis Regina, Edu Lobo, Gal Costa, Vinicius de Moraes, Nelson Riddle and Dorival Caymmi. I was decided to show a lovely Antonio Carlos Jobim career album, but this compilation is really a best choice for friends who are having their first contact with Jobim’s music and also the many fans of the Maestro. Disco de Bolso - O Tom de Antonio Carlos Jobim e O Tal de Joao Bosco (1972)

Label

Hello, good evening! This is so far the greatest zecalouro’s mother finding. Actually, not a finding, she had this little recorded since 1972 and both did not remember. She found it inside a closet and called immediately to announce her finding.

When I told her she had the first recording of Aguas de Marco, released on May, 1972, months before the “official” release at Matita Pere, she got really amazed and send it in the next day for us. This recording was released in Disco de Bolso magazine, a bonus recorded included in the anthological magazine Pasquim. Let’s see.

This is Disco de Bolso – O Tom de Antonio Carlos Jobim e o Tal de Joao Bosco (1972), for Zen, featuring the Side A with the first recording of Aguas de Marco and Side B with the first recording of Joao Bosco (probably unknown by that time), performing Agnus Sei. Aguas de Marco is very different from the version released in Matita Pere, it is faster than usual and Antonio Carlos Jobim seems to have a hard time trying to sing on such speed. The recording occurs inside the studio of Sergio Ricardo, the editor of Disco de Bolso magazine, a nice idea that had only a second edition with Caetano Veloso and Fagner. This is another important piece of history being released at Loronix. Tracks include:

Hello, good evening! Joao Barbosa is really connected with relevant dates of Brazilian music. Earlier this week, he told us about Carnegie Hall concert 45th anniversary and yesterday he told me about Joao Gilberto birthday, today, November 25, when Joao Gilberto celebrates his 75th birthday. Happy Birthday, Joao Gilberto, thanks Joao Barbosa and thanks a million Dona Iara for providing this album, making possible our little homage.

PS.: Forget about Joao Gilberto’s birthday, it is not today, but June 10th. My fault. Joao Barbosa did not say that yesterday. Let’s put this parrot off-line! 🙂

This is Joao Gilberto – Joao Gilberto Interpreta Tom Jobim (1978), for Odeon, featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim compositions performed by Joao Gilberto on his early recordings for Odeon label. Antonio Carlos Jobim e Vinicius de Moraes – Brasilia | Sinfonia da Alvorada (1961)

Hello, good morning! This post demanded a lot of work and I’m convinced the effort really worth. Actually, this is the repost of an already released album at Loronix. I spoke with Caetano Rodrigues about this album and the way he came to my hand and he could not believe on everything I said. Caetano said he took ten years hunting this LP until he got it on a quite an expensive price.

He said also that is not easy to get it with the booklet made available here with the music and by the scrolling panorama bellow. The booklet features instructions on how to perform the Symphony, in Portuguese, English, French and a couple of other languages that I could not identify. Everything is upgraded, cover scans and music, including the FLAC format as an option. I’m making available my original writing with slight modifications. Let’s see.

In October 06, 2006, zecalouro said:

In 1958, Juscelino Kubitschek, president of Brazil, asked Vinicius de Moraes and Antonio Carlos Jobim to compose a symphonic suite to be used at the opening ceremony of a city that was being built in the middle of Brazil to be the new capital in April 21st, 1960.

Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes spent a time at the new city before the inauguration to get around the place and get inspiration needed to such important mission. In spite of the symphony was composed timely, for unknown reasons, it was not performed on the inauguration day.

This is Antonio Carlos Jobim e Vinicius de Moraes – Brasilia | Sinfonia da Alvorada (1961), recorded in November 1960, at studio. Tom is conducting the orchestra with the participation of Radames Gnattali (piano), Vinicius de Moraes (words, poetry), Elizeth Cardoso (voice) and Os Cariocas (voices).

Sinfonia da Alvorada had the first live performance only in 1966 at the TV station Excelsior in Sao Paulo. Take a time to check the scrolling panorama below to see how front and back cover created by Oscar Niemeyer matches on a single image and the booklet already mentioned.

Tracks include:
01 – O Planalto Deserto (Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes)
02 – O Homem (Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes)
03 – A Chegada dos Candangos (Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes)
04 – O Trabalho e a Construção (Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes)
05 – Coral (Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes)

Here we go on another album connecting Brazilian Popular and Classical music, featuring a tribute to the greatest artists on each side, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Heitor Villa Lobos. I think this album is rather unknown by Loronixers, it was released by Coca Cola Beverage company to be distributed to clients and never was made available commercially.

Coca Cola released this album to homage Heitor Villa Lobos on his 100th anniversary, celebrated in 1986, inviting Gilson Peranzzetta (piano) and Arthur Maia (bass), backed by the special guests Ze Nogueira (sax soprano) and Amando Marcal (percussion). Let’s see.

This is Gilson Peranzzetta (piano) & Arthur Maia (contrabaixo) – Tom & Villa (1986), for Coca Cola, featuring four instrumental renditions of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Heitor Villa Lobos Music. Gilson Peranzzetta is also musical director and arranger, being also responsible for creating Jobinianas Nr. 1 and 2, Antonio Carlos Jobim compositions blended with excerpts of Villa Lobos music) and Viva Villa Nr. 1 and 2, Villa Lobos music blended with excerpts of Antonio Carlos Jobim compositions. Ze Nogueira is listed as special guest, but really makes the difference delivering nice sax playing. Tracks include:

Armando Marcal
(percussion)

Track List

Me cansei
Do calipso

A morena vai sambar
Seu corpo todo balançar
Rio de sol, de céu, de mar

Vinicius mostra sua nova composição com Baden, “O Astronauta.”

Será que por acaso
A flor sabe que é flor
E a estrela Vênus

Publicado em: Saturday, August 18, 2007 by zecalouro

I had the chance to watch a little performance of a new and very solid Brazilian vocal group, Grupo Nós Quatro, a quartet of voices lead by the mighty Celia Vaz, a Brazilian arranger, violonista and composer, with songs recorded by many Brazilian artists and arrangers delivered to classic albums, such like Dom Um Romao – Hotmosphere, one of the most downloaded albums at Loronix.I spoke with some friends at that concert about this Brazilian vocal group – Grupo Chovendo na Roseira – introduced to me by Carlos Braga and just a few said know their existence. That’s why I think this nice album will make the day of several fans of female vocal groups. Let’s see. This is Grupo Chovendo na Roseira – Interpreta Tom Jobim (1988), for Som Livre, another Caetano Rodrigues contribution made by request of Carlos Braga. Carlos knows everything about Chovendo na Roseira and sent to us a nice text with the information that nobody knows, as follows (Carlos, correct if I made a mistake on translation, please):

“Grupo Chovendo na Roseira features Bia Paes Leme, Belva, Soraya e Lu (daugther of singer Carlos Jose and nephew of Luiz Claudio Ramos, which is a violonista and official Chico Buarque arranger). In the year of 1977 the group had a different name, “Quatro Cantos” and as far as I know, they did not released any recordings. I tried to produced a LP, with the help of Raymundo Bittencourt, but the girls had others name in mind — the violonista Ary Sperling and the pianist Joao Reboucas — their mentors at that time.

Later on, the group got new members – Ary Sperling (vocals) and Ronaldo (vocals) — and changed their name to Viva Voz, with one album already available at Loronix. When Viva Voz terminated, the original girls of “Quatro Cantos” assembled Chovendo Na Roseira and lauched this first an only tribute album to Tom Jobim with Orchestra arrangements by Eduardo Souto Netto, also in charge of some vocal arrangements. The other arrangements are from Bia Paes Leme, which made a career as arranger after the end of Chovendo na Roseira.

In my opinion this album is wonderful, with highlights to the soprano voice of Lu (Luciana), the beautiful arrangement of Estrada do Sol, my favorite. I sure Loronixers will appreciate this album.”

Thanks Carlos Braga!

Para Viver um Grande Amor – OST (1983)

Publicado em: Tuesday, July 17, 2007 by zecalouro

This is the original soundtrack of a movie film based on the musical play “Pobre Menina Rica” written by Vinícius de Moraes and Carlos Lyra. For those who never had contact with the play, it tells the story of people from favelas in Rio de Janeiro occupying an empty building and establishing a new society there. Anyway, the play understanding is not a pre requisite, you can have high quality entertainment only with the soundtrack, featuring several Brazilian artists under the musical direction of Maestro Antonio Carlos Jobim.

This is Para Viver um Grande Amor – OST (1983), for Columbia, featuring Dori Caymmi (great artist and a missing piece at Loronix), Djavan, Olivia Byington, Elba Ramalho, Sergio Ricardo and Zeze Mota. Djavan is also the movie main performer, sharing this role with one of the most beautiful woman in Brazil, Patricia Pillar. Compositions by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Carlos Lyra and Chico Buarque de Hollanda with arrangements by Eduardo Souto Neto. We cannot go wrong with this great soundtrack of a great movie. Tracks include:

01 – Samba do Carioca (Vinicius de Moraes / Carlos Lyra) – Dori Caymmi
02 – Sabe Você (Vinicius de Moraes / Carlos Lyra) – Djavan
03 – Sinhazinha (Despertar) (Chico Buarque) – Zezé Motta
04 – Desejo (Djavan) – Djavan
05 – A Violeira (Tom Jobim / Chico Buarque) Elba Ramalho

08 – A Primavera (Vinicius de Moraes / Carlos Lyra) – Olivia Byington

In the very first beginning of Loronix, I received from a Japanese friend a video with Antonio Carlos Jobim and Banda Nova performing live in Japan, according with this friend, the performance happened in 1987, Japan, city of Hibiya. By that time he said it was a personal gift, not to be shown at Loronix as the audience had some blank spaces and this was not good.

After a year, I watched the video again and my first reaction was to send an email to him asking for a new permission. He wrote back in a matter of hours saying that since then, Loronix changed his mind, his habits and his life, giving also the needed authorization.

This is the kind of thing that makes my day. I’m so glad with Loronixers and the community we created together around this website.

Watch this video with attention, it is unique, I never saw The Maestro with such deep feelings performing at the piano. A Very special moment. The songs are Dindi and Luiza. Thanks Japanese friend.

Hope uEnjoy!

Trix, the knowledgeable Loronixer from Belo Horizonte, told me a couple of days ago that Loronix lacks on the Brazilian singer Joyce. It was wise of him to make this remark, Joyce is a worldwide acclaimed artist and very popular among Loronixers. This is Joyce – Tom Jobim | Os Anos 60 (1987), for Columbia. We have a video available with this post, probably the first one we make very associated with the album. The video brings Joyce, Gilson Peranzzetta and Antonio Carlos Jobim, recorded in 1987, the same year of the album release.

Tracks include:

Hello, Good Evening! Today, Caetano reminds us another important day, the passing of “The First Lady of Song”, the greatest female Jazz singer of all times, the Queen of Jazz, the legendary Ella Fitzgerald, eleven years ago. Loronix small celebration is based on the most Brazilian album among hundreds recorded by Ella Fitzgerald, her tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim, Ella Embraces Jobim with The Queen delivering Jobim Song Book, just as she did before to the renowned cast of composers from the last Century.

This is Ella Fitzgerald – Ela Abraca Jobim | Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Antonio Carlos Jobim Songbook (1980), for Pablo. This album is of a great importance to Brazilian music, Ella Fitzgerald and Norman Ganz — Fitzgerald producer for decades — made this songbook as just as they did the previous ones, leveling Antonio Carlos Jobim to the same plateau given to (in order of Ella Songbooks release) Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, Duke Ellington, Irvin Berlin, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern and Johnny Mercer. Ella’s powerful voice on top of sweet Antonio Carlos Jobim songs is an unique listening experience. Personnel listing features top-notch Brazilian and US musicians. Tracks include:

When DVD players started getting popular in Brazil, some companies start making very cheap DVD with old movies, cartoons, documentaries, etc. Among that offer of low cost DVDs sold in newspaper stands, a company released a surprisingly good and never seen before concert recorded in Italy (1979), featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Toquinho and Miucha. I remember it was paradise on earth, nice quality, full color and an excellent sound of a concert recorded on a very small theater with the atmosphere of a small celebration between these for great artists. This is the extracted audio, featuring 17 songs and 52 minutes of a truly amazing concert.

This is Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Toquinho e Miucha – Musicalmente (1979). As far I could search Musicalmente is the name of a TV Show in Italy where probably the concert was performed and record. This is an out of print and I’m glad to keep my copy bought by the time it was made available in Brazil. Everybody knows that I’m not the best person in town to talk about a Sergio Mendes album, Caetano is my right choice and we have been talking about this one for more than a month. This is an early 1964 Sergio Mendes LP. I know the first Sergio Mendes album is Dance Moderno, which is available at Loronix, Find It should give you the answer. Before Dance Moderno, there was released two albums, this one and the one that I like most, Voce Ainda Nao Ouviu Nada with Sergio Mendes & Bossa Rio. I don’t know what is the second one, but I’m sure this is my second favorite. Let’s see why.

This is Sergio Mendes – The Swinger from Rio (1964), for Atlantic, later released in Brazil as Bossa Nova York, for Elenco. The Brazilian issue explains where Swinger from Rio was recorded, in the US, featuring Maestro Antonio Carlos Jobim among other five stars artists, such as: Tiao Neto, Phil Woods and others. Antonio Carlos Jobim plays violao throughout the album and the US Jazz guest on various songs. Personnel listing is like a puzzle this time, presented just before track list. Tracks include:

Hello, Good Evening! Sometimes we need to be straightforward, this is the time. Mr. E., the mighty Mr. E. that sent to us Mary Goncalvez, Zeze Gonzaga among several other truly amazing contributions, sent this pearl. I would like to title this post as “All About Copacabana Palace Film”, Mr. E. made a real strike, sending Copacabana Palace OST and 2 excerpts of that movie with Brazilian artists performing Bossa Nova songs. Thanks a million Mr. E. I’m sure this post will please everybody.

This is Copacabana Palace – Band Originale du Film (1962), for Festival, featuring Joao Gilberto, Os Cariocas, Norma Bengell, Miguel and Orquestra Gianni Ferrio. The tireless Mr. E. also makes available two excerpts of that movie, Joao Gilberto, Luiz Bonfa and Antonio Carlos Jobim performing Cancao do Mar together at the beach. We know this video is available at Loronix already, however, Mr. E. version has a much better quality and it is complete. I did not know that the previous one had some parts missing.

To end this magnificent contribution, Mr. E. pleases us with a music video featuring Os Cariocas and Joao Gilberto performing So Danco Samba. Wow! Thanks Mr. E. everybody will always remember your effort. Tracks include:

Messias – O Melhor de Antonio Carlos Jobim Interpretado por Messias (1968)

Woow! Another Brazilian guitar player that I never heard just knew this cover at Caetano’s Bossa Nova book. Sometimes I fell shamed when I say that I don’t know a given artist made available at Loronix. Messias recorded only three albums between 1967 and 1969, a three-year recording career. I could not search what happened with Messias since then, even spoke with Caetano about his, but this record is truly amazing and you will probably stay on that mood of finding information about Messias after your first hearing.

This is Messias – O Melhor de Antonio Carlos Jobim Interpretado por Messias (1968), for RCA Candem. Messias Tribute to Tom and his first LP was also a tribute, to Chico Buarque de Holanda. Liner notes says Messias recorded this album as a request from the Japanese RCA subsidiary, this is a important credential, shows that Messias had even a reputation outside of Brazil. This is not a guitar only album, a combo accompanies Messias, delivering a respectful Samba Jazz beat on top of Messias guitar and Antonio Carlos Jobim compositions. Personnel is not credited. Tracks include:

01 – Garota de Ipanema (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 – Corcovado (Tom Jobim)
03 – Só Danço Samba (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
04 – Desafinado (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
05 – Insensatez (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
06 – Felicidade (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
07 – Meditação (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
08 – Água de Beber (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
09 – Dindi (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
10 – Samba de Uma Nota Só (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)

Elizeth Cardoso – Cancao do Amor Demais (1958)

We started the weekend with the repost of Milton Banana Trio – Balancando com Milton Banana Trio and we are now closing with another repost, by the way, a mandatory repost. This album has a very important role on the history of the music from Brazil and the music that connect our hearts at Loronix, the Bossa Nova.

This is Elizeth Cardoso – Cancao do Amor Demais (1958). Recorded in 1958 by the small label Festa, Cancao do Amor Demais brings 13 compositions of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes and Joao Gilberto making the first recording of his famous Bossa Nova playing style. Antonio Carlos Jobim is also in charge of arrangements and piano. In spite of being a historical album, Cancao do Amor Demais is delicious to hear, even after 50 years. Elizeth Cardoso is the main performer and this is one of her best records I have heard.

I bought this vinyl a week ago in one of those hard to explain bargains This is not the original edition, but a reissue made by Festa in 1960, two years before. The back cover brings a wonderful hand write liner note by Vinicius de Moraes, included inside the music and so good that I’m making available here if you cannot wait. I hope you support these weekend reposting; I will focus on essentials and the already explained criterion of making it in an excelent quality. Tracks include:

Several Loronix friends were today at the first Eumir Deodato concert in Sao Paulo after a hiatus of twenty years with no live concerts in Brazil. Let’s make something new, releasing an international artist performing Bossa Nova on video. This is Laura Fygi performing Corcovado on a very relaxed session when she even says at the end nice words about this great tune. Thanks Luiz Harding. Take the increase lens to see it bigger, the quality is awesome.

Hope uEnjoy!
