ZÉ MARIA E SEU PIANO DE PRATA

Hello, good evening! I’m a parrot that believes in logic, although I have some mannerisms. Perhaps this is the reason why I like technology, which is a field where things work as they should always be. But this time something does not seems logical. I’m having a very strange problem with my upload speed. And this problem is specific, it happens only between my computer and Loronix server. When I make uploads to any other server, it works. I need someone to perform some tests with me, which is only to perform some uploads and report back the transfer speed. I took a day to upload this album at the glorious speed of 3Kbps. I’m glad it is now over and I can update Loronix. Let’s see.

This is Ze Maria – Ze Maria e Seu Piano de Prata (1958), for Continental, featuring the legendary organ player that introduced Jorge Ben on recordings, among some other relevant accomplishments, such like recording a very old album leading a conjunto featuring well-known Brazilian musicians, such like Dom Um Romao, Neco and Luiz Marino. I believe this album brings this personnel listing, but I found it on a very bad condition with the back cover missing. Anyway, featuring or not Dom Um Romao and Neco, Ze Maria delivers an above the average album in the style and in the time it was recorded with lots of percussion and addictive cuts, such like the sample track. This album is really a treat and the information available is almost inexistent. Tracks include:

Personnel (to be confirmed)

Ze Maria
(piano)
Dom Um Romao
(drums)
Neco
(guitar)
Radamanto
(percussion)
Luiz Marinho
(bass)

Ze Maria - Voce Quer Dancar (1959)

Ze Maria is one of the most interesting musicians that I had the chance to know with Loronix. He has a vast discography that can be described on three different phases, being the second the most successful and well covered at Loronix with his album with Jorge Ben and others releases from the 60’s. The third phase starts in the 70’s, when Ze Maria released only instrumental albums with repertoire of international standards, not released at Loronix. This is the first album from his first phase, the 50’s phase with Ze Maria on Para Dancar releases. Voce Quer Dancar is an above the average Para Dancar album, with lots of instruments performed by not credited musicians backing Ze Maria at the piano. Let’s see.

This is Ze Maria – Voce Quer Dancar? (1959), for Internacional, once again delivering a fantastic cover with this beautiful furniture design from the 50’s. Ze Maria delivers nice piano playing backed by bass, percussion, guitar, drums, vibraphone and a nice piston played by Barriquinha, the only credited musician from Ze Maria conjunto. I’m making available at Loronix Preview Center track 02 – Fantasia Impromptu by Frederic Chopin. Tracks include:

01 – Você Passou (Nazareno de Brito / Alcyr Pires Vermelho)
02 – Fantasia Impromptu (Op 66) (Frederic Chopin)
03 – Return To Me (D. Minno / C. Lombardo)
04 – Sabrás Que Te Quiero (Teddy Fregoso)
05 – Tammy (Jay Livingston / R. Evans)
06 – Till (Sigman / Danvers)
07 – Piove (Domenico Modugno / Verde)
08 – Mon Manége a Moi (J. Constantin / N. Glanzberg)
09 – Paraíba (Humberto Teixeira / Luis Gonzaga)
10 – Jura (Zé da Zilda / Marcelino Ramos / Adolfo Macedo)
11 – Adiós (Enric Madriguera)
12 – Improviso Em Mambo (Zé Maria)

This is the greatest Mon’s finding ever, a pretty unknown reissue of the anthological Ze Maria album Tudo Azul, featuring vocals by Jorge Ben. This album was already available at Loronix with the blue cover of the first issue (available in your left), but the vinyl conversion was not so well done and probably several friends did not notice its availability and the importance of this record. Let’s see.

This is Ze Maria e Seu Orgao – Tudo Azul (1962), for Continental, upgraded by Disco Lar 1969 reissue. In spite of being an above the average instrumental organ album, including some tracks of true Samba Jazz style, Tudo Azul has one of the first participations of Jorge Ben on recordings, delivering vocals at 02 – Por Causa de Voce Menina and 07 – Mas que Nada. Jorge Ben was pretty unknown by this time and he got a contract with Philips just before this participation on Ze Maria’s album. I think Bossa Nova collectors will be amazed with this release, just like Caetano Rodrigues was today when I spoke about it. Tracks include:

01 – Tudo Azul (João de Barro / Alcyr Pires Vermelho)
02 – Por Causa de Você Menina (Jorge Ben “Jorge Benjor”) with JORGE BEN
03 – Samba do Avião (Tom Jobim)
04 – Japoninho (Orlann Divo / Roberto Jorge)
05 – Só Danço Samba (Vinicius de Moraes / Tom Jobim)
06 – João Sem Vintém (Zé Maria)
07 – Mas Que Nada (Jorge Ben “Jorge Benjor”) with JORGE BEN
08 – Influência do Jazz (Carlos Lyra)
09 – A Vida do Negro (Orlann Divo / Amaury Tristão)
10 – Garota de Ipanema (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
11 – Deixa Eu Ficar (Esther Delamare)
12 – Gostoso É Sambar (João Mello)

The first time we had the chance to show you a LP from the Brazilian organist I could not realize how amazing artist he is and how many wonderful releases would be available at Loronix.

Loronix first Ze Maria release was Esquema 64/Bossa Nova e Balanco (1964). zecalouro said also that the cover was similar to a record from the 30’s or 40’s. More than a month later, Ze Maria had another release with an LP with the participation of Jorge Ben, Tudo Azul, Bossa Nova e Balanco (1962).

Ze Maria is now back with the third and greatest Loronix release, Ze Maria, seu Orgao e Conjunto – Nova Onda (1965). Ze Maria is in charge of the arrangements, accompanied by Jorge Autuori (drums), Egidio (bass), Sombra (piston), Pedrotte (trombone) and Geraldo (acoustic guitar).

I think that Geraldo (acoustic guitar) is Geraldo Vespar, but it is that kind of information that needs to be checked with two or more sources. Several different singers shows his voices, as follows: Gaguinho on tracks 01 and 08, Jorginho on tracks 02 and 09, Daniel Gonzalez on track 05 and Selma So on track 11. Tracks include:

01 – Nova Onda (Gaguinho / Zé Maria)
02 – Meu Veneno (José Bezerra / Jackson do Pandeiro / Mergulhão)
03 – Neste Mundo Só Você (Jorge Smera / Paulo Gesta)
04 – Um Brasileiro nos States (Rildo Hora / Humberto Reis)
05 – Neurastênico (Betinho / Nazareno de Brito)
06 – Nega Quatrocentão (Almeida Rego / Carlos Cruz)
07 – Nova Onda do Strip-tease (Hélton Menezes)
08 – Na Batucada do Zé (João Roberto Kelly / Aloísio Silva)
09 – Valente Morre Mais Cedo (Padeirinho)
10 – Catolé (Murillo Latini / Bob Nelson)
11 – Mamãe Ele Olhou Pra Mim (Ma He’s Making Eyes At Me) (F. Clare / C. Conrad / Vrs. Sombra)
12 – Perpétuum (Zé Maria)

Another amazing – teamwork is needed – post of an obscure LP from the 60’s. When zecalouro saw this cover artwork he kept himself wondering for a while that it was some 78 RMP from the 30’s or 40’s.

Pretty wrong. This is a nice LP from 1964, Ze Maria, Seu Orgao e seu Conjunto, Bossa Nova e Balanco, Esquema 64. Ze Maria is an organist, sometimes ironically defined as a Walter Wanderley wannabe.
