QuartetoemCyQuerelasdoBrasil-BACK

Hello, good evening! I think we will have today the same situation we had tomorrow on our last post, an unknown album recorded by a great artist and never released in CD. Maybe I’m wrong, but except from some occasional and small reissues, Quarteto em Cy – Querelas do Brasil, never had a chance to be released at the digital age. This is a repost, Querelas do Brasil was made available first in November 2006 with no back cover, transferred at a low bitrate and had a track missing. Everything is now updated and I hope you have a very nice time with this great vocal group. Let’s see.

This is Quarteto em Cy – Querelas do Brasil (1978), for Philips, which is probably the most “political flavored” album released by the girls, with several lyrics about Brazilian problems of that time. By the way, the album title is taken from one of those songs; Querelas do Brasil by Mauricio Tapajos and Aldir Blanc. Such as many Brazilian albums released in the 70’s, Querelas do Brazil features a constellation of Brazilian musicians, including Sivuca, Antonio Adolfo, Luizao, Neco, Copinha, Raul de Barros and many others. Quarteto em Cy - Tamba Trio (1966)

There is no much to say about this reposting, rescued from June 2006, with the files hosted at the old Rapidshare.de and probably out of the sight and reach of many Loronixers. Such like Edu Lobo – A Musica de Edu Lobo por Edu Lobo (1963), Tamba Trio proves to be also a great backup band, this time with the Girls from Bahia, also known as Quarteto em Cy and their second career album. Let’s see.

This is Quarteto em Cy / Tamba Trio – Som Definitivo (1966), for Forma. Luiz Eça delivers instrumental and vocal arrangements for Quarteto em Cy. Do not miss Vinicius de Moraes liner notes at the back cover, now included as part of the upgrade. This is another of those mandatory and self-explanatory releases. You cannot go wrong with Som Definitivo. Tracks include:

Mr. G., my personal Quarteto em Cy consultant, prepared last year a list of albums by the girls that should not be out of Loronix. I know the list by heart and this one is part of Mr. G. essentials. I miss Mr. G. briefing on this album, recorded live in December (1976) at Teatro Fonte da Saudade in Rio de Janeiro and I did not find Resistindo studio release. It is also the first “live” album I heard from Quarteto em Cy and the girls deliver a nice work. Let’s see.

This is Quarteto em Cy – Resistindo (1977), for Philips. I think the strength of Resistindo is the reduced accompaniment supporting Quarteto em Cy; there is no orchestra or brass section, just traditional bass, drums, guitar and piano, in charge of top-notch musicians, including the excellent Zeca on drums. I hope Mr. G., comes later with additional info and his personal highlights to Resistindo. Tracks includes:

Personnel

Luiz Claudio Ramos
(arrangements, violao, viola, guitar)
Luizao
(bass)
Laercio de Freitas
(piano)
Zeca
(drums)

Track List

01 – Eu Vim da Bahia (Gilberto Gil) Filhos de Gandhi (Gilberto Gil)
02 – Viola Violar (Milton Nascimento / Márcio Borges)
03 – Capricho (Francis Hime / Castro Alves) Memória (Alcyvando Luz / Carlos Drummond de Andrade)
04 – Samambaias (Maurício Tapajós / Hermínio Bello de Carvalho)
05 – Favela (Jorginho / Padeirinho) Arquitetura de Pobre (Edgar Barbosa / Joacyr Santana) O Ronco da Cuíca (João Bosco / Aldir Blanc)
06 – Resistindo (João Bosco / Aldir Blanc)
07 – O Rancho da Goiabada (João Bosco / Aldir Blanc)

I had more than a few alternatives to close the day, but when I saw this cover and remembered that Quarteto em Cy was not made available for more than a month, I could not resist. So, here we go on another Quarteto em Cy album. The girls have a great production this time, with voice arrangements by Raymundo Bittencourt and Cesar Camargo Mariano, instrumental arrangements by Lincoln Olivetti and everything produced by Raymundo Bittencourt.

This is Quarteto em Cy – Pontos de Luz (1982), for Som Livre, featuring Cybele, Cyva , Cynara and Soninha, which is current Quarteto em Cy formation, unchanged since 1980. Pontos de Luz has a strong influence of Lincoln Olivetti arrangements, delivering a lot of synthesizers to back the girl’s voice. Anyway, it is a really unusual album by Quarteto em Cy and I hope Loronixers give feedback on it. Tracks include:

Personnel

Robson Jorge, Luiz Claudio Ramos, Quico
(guitar)
Lincoln Olivetti, Robson Jorge, Sergio Souza, Cleberson Horsth, Ricardo Fegahli

Publicado em: Wednesday, June 06, 2007 by zecalouro

Today posts were not planned and it was one of the days that I like most. Non-planned days produces nice outcomes, for instance, no instrumental music today, also, a nice harmonization of three albums to Loronixers, we started with a female singer, Neusa Maria, made a male singer in the middle, Joao Bosco and the close blends boys and girls, MPB-4 and Quarteto em Cy performing together. Isn’t that great? Well, I think it is.

This is MPB-4 / Quarteto em Cy – Cobra de Vidro (1976), for Philips. I don’t know if our Quarteto em Cy consultant Mr. G. has Cobra de Vidro among his favorites, if not, I think Mr. G. should consider as one of the best from now on. Cobra de Vidro has several different situation, such as: the best Because (Lennon / McCartney) rendition I have ever heard, two wonderful “instrumental” songs using voices as instruments, Noites Cariocas (Jacob do Bandolim) and Fuga (Heitor Villa Lobos) and a Guarania with Spanish lyrics Me Gustan Los Estudiantes (Violetta Parra). I don’t have idea of the popularity and availability of this album in Brazil and worldwide, perhaps this should be a wonderful surprise to Loronixers. Tracks include:

01 – Nada Será Como Antes (Milton Nascimento / Ronaldo Bastos)
02 – A Estrada e o Violeiro (Sidney Miller)
03 – Guararapes (Dori Caymmi / Paulo César Pinheiro)
04 – Noites Cariocas (Jacob do Bandolim)
05 – 5/6/65 (Luis Cláudio Ramos) Instrumental
06 – Não Existe Pecado ao Sul do Equador (Chico Buarque / Ruy Guerra)
07 – O Cio da Terra (Milton Nascimento / Chico Buarque)
08 – Me Gustan Los Estudiantes (Violeta Parra)
09 – Oriente (Gilberto Gil)
10 – Because (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
11 – Amor Amor (Sueli Costa / Cacaso)
12 – Fuga (Vocal) (Villa-Lobos)

.

I cannot remember if I made a post with two albums of a same artist or group before, but I think this one worth this try, both albums are very connected with each other and splitting them would spoil a lot the listening pleasure. I would like to say thank you to everybody who helped zeca on making this post available, Helio Tavares was the fast fish, making the music available as soon as the request came from CBox, Marcello Montore for providing cover artwork and Caetano for building the network to make everything ready to Loronixers.

This is Quarteto em Cy – Antologia do Samba Cancao Volumes 1 & 2 (1975, 1976), both for Philips. These albums should definitively be released as a double LP, Quarteto em Cy makes a breathtaking rendition with meddley to several key Brazilian music figures, such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Noel Rosa, Dorival Caymmi, Johnny Alf, Garoto among others. Quarteto em Cy has some kind of magic and their albums are always very successful at Loronix. I’m sure this one is not an exception. Tracks include:

I was planning to close this Monday with Dick Farney, since I had to make an urgent work to be accomplished by the morning. However, the schedule has changed and I’m very happy to present this album as an extraordinary post. Well, I will be open and honest my willing to make this additional one is just to show people this gorgeous picture bellow (with a high quality version available on music files) and also tell something that I didn’t know.

This picture was taken in front of Bottles Bar, showing Quarteto em Cy, Carlos Coqueijo and Carlos Castilho, brother of Bebeto Castilho of Tamba Trio. Carlos Castilho performed a special role with the early Quarteto em Cy, Carlos was the founder of “As Bahianinhas”, the girls before changing the group name to Quarteto em Cy. Carlos Castilho was the arranger and also guitarist, performing together with As Bahianinhas on first Quarteto em Cy performances in Rio de Janeiro.

Today at 7pm, I started the upload of what was supposed to be the last post of the day. Now it is twenty past midnight and the gauge shows 93% complete. Just read an email from g picanco demonstrating what I thought it was a rumor: an abnormal activity of people using Brazilian government tax application at the same time is making traffic overload. Anyway, it is late, so I’m giving up that choice. However, the day is not ruined, just the opposite, this is a most wanted release and everybody will enjoy it. Thanks once again Caetano for this very hard to find LP.

This is The Girls from Bahia – Pardon my English (1967), for Warner. The Girls from Bahia is the name used for Quarteto em Cy on their initiative to conquer USA audiences in the late 60’s. This LP was recorded and released in the United States, featuring arrangements by Oscar Castro Neves and produced by Ray Gilbert and Aloysio de Oliveira. For the convenience of everybody, that nice Quarteto em Cy video with Marcos Valle at the Andy Williams Show is also being reposted bellow. Tracks include:

01 – Pardon My English (Samba Torto) (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira / Vrs. Ray Gilbert)
02 – Makin’ Whoopee (Donaldson / Kahn)
03 – Tears (Razão de Viver) (Eumir Deodato / Paulo Sergio Valle / Vrs. Ray Gilbert)

This post has been prepared for several weeks. Everything started with Jean Yves (Jean do Trombone), that sent me an email asking for it, and then I had the chance to see it on a very good price, a real bargain in a vinyl shop. However, when I got home with the record, I could see better why it was so cheap, the LP was in a very bad condition with several scratches. Some weeks had gone when I had the idea to ask Caetano for it and here we are, unique combination, covers by zecalouro and music by Caetano. I decided to keep this cover by the girls autograph, better seen with the music.

When someone had asked at CBox for this soundtrack a couple of days ago, I could not imagine it was so good. This is Quarteto em Cy, MPB-4, Ziraldo e Sergio Ricardo – Flicts (1980), for Philips. Flicts is based on the first Ziraldo book written for children in 1969, the story of a color that could not find its place in this world.

The book is truly amazing; Ziraldo used lots of colors and a minimum of words. The U.S. Embassy in Brazil gave a copy of the book to the American astronauts that first stepped on the moon when they visited Brazil. Neil Armstrong, one of the astronauts, was touched when he read the book, and wrote to Ziraldo: “The moon is FLICTS”.

Ziraldo is really a lucky guy. Flicts has a top-notch personnel listing that I invite you to take a careful look before getting tracks.

Quarteto em Cy – Quarteto em Cy (1972)

This post is in response to the great reception we had on the last Quarteto em Cy release, the album Querelas do Brasil. It is incredible that Quarteto em Cy releases from the 70’s are more popular than the earlier ones from the 60’s.

Taking advantage of this momentum, let me introduce Quarteto em Cy – Quarteto em Cy (1972), for Odeon, recorded after a hiatus that started in 1970, lasting two years. This album also landmarks a new line-up with Cyva, Cynara, Sonia and the first recording participation of Dorinha Tapajós.

This formation did not change in the following eight years and the last change was in 1980, with Dorinha Tapajos leaving the quartet to be replaced by Cybele, line-up that remains unchanged since them. This album has the participation of Dorival Caymmi on track 11, Canto de Oba. Tracks include:

The Girls from Bahia – Revolucion con Brasilia (1968)

Straightforward, The LP The Girls from Bahia – Revolucion con Brasilia (1968) is a Quarteto em Cy LP. Quarteto em Cy adopted this name when the girls moved to US in 1967. Perhaps this strategy has failed since they have recorded in US by Warner just this LP. During their stay, Quarteto em Cy changed their repertoire to American standards versions and adapted English lyrics of Antonio Carlos Jobim and other major Brazilian composers.

After this international experience – probably very badly produced since the Spanish title was a big error – Cynara and Cybele left the group. This is a very curious and hard to find release. Tracks include:

01 – Berimbau (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes / Version Gilbert)
02 – Tem Mais Samba (Chico Buarque)
03 – Edmundo (In The Mood) (Garland)
04 – Laia Ladaia (Reza) (Edu Lobo / Ruy Guerra / Version Norman Gimbel)
05 – I Live To Love You (Morrer de Amor) (Oscar Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini / Version Gilbert)
06 – The Sunny Side Of The Street (Fields / McHugh)
07 – Road To Nowhere (Blanco / Oliveira)
08 – The Old Piano Roll Blues (Coben)
09 – The Day It Rained (Ferreira / Camargo / Vrs. Gilbert)
10 – E Nada Mais (Durval Ferreira / Luis Fernando Freire)
11 – Manhattan (Rodgers / Hart)
12 – Dindi (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira / Version Gilbert)
13 – Parade (A Banda) (Chico Buarque / Version B. Russell)

Vinicius de Moraes e Dorival Caymmi – no ZUM ZUM com Quarteto em Cy (1967)

On the Brazilian music scene from the early 60’s, it was very common at that time a gig format called “shows de bolso”, pocket shows. These pocket shows were held on small places such like the nightclubs of that time from Beco das Garrafas in Copacabana.

In 1967, the producer Aloysio de Oliveira decided to make a pocket show with Dorival Caymmi and four little girls that arrived from Bahia to pursue an international career. However, on a last minute addition, Vinicius de Moraes was invited to take part on that pocket show.

The four little girls are the now famous Quarteto em Cy and this Album, Vinicius/Caymmi No Zum Zum 1967 was the most sucessful album – in terms of sales – from the legendary Brazilian Record Label Elenco.

Due the poor resources available by that time – were a live record was severe spoiled by ambient sounds – Aloysio de Oliveira decided to make a studio album with the set-list, an historic piece.
