Let’s check this repost of one of the albums that I like most at Loronix, featuring Fats Elpidio, a renowned Brazilian pianist that makes some different of what we are used to hear, he plays organ on this release. Everything is improved with this repost, from cover artworks to the music, including the FLAC alternative. Fats Elpidio performs a repertoire of Sambas and the arrangements are in charge of the great Maestro Nelsinho. I will keep part of my original text bellow.

This is Fats Elpidio e Seu Conjunto – Samba da Madrugada (1962), for Masterplay, featuring Fats Elpidio at the piano and a combo, with non-credited musicians. This Fats Elpidio work is pretty different from the last one, much more swinging and dedicated to Samba rhythms with organ playing. Tracks include:

01 – Gamação (João Roberto Kelly)
02 – Dá Uma Surra Nela (Fernando Costa / Rossini Pinto)
03 – Tamanco no Samba (Orlann Divo / Hélton Menezes)
04 – Gosto de Você de Graça (João Roberto Kelly)
05 – Nós e o Mar (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
06 – Na Cadência do Samba (Ataulfo Alves / Paulo Gesta)
07 – Samba da Madrugada (Dora Lopes / Carminha Mascarenhas / Herotides)
08 – Volta Por Cima (Paulo Vanzolini)
09 – Na Roda do Samba (Orlann Divo / Hélton Menezes)
10 – Vertical (Orlann Divo / Roberto Jorge)
11 – Seu Amor (Silvio Viana)
12 – História (Nilo Sergio)

Hello, Good Evening! Para Dancar albums are getting popular, people is giving a great feedback on comments and also in number of downloads. That’s why we are starting today with another album in the style, featuring the legendary Quarteto Excelsior that will call the attention of everybody, including the friends that do not appreciate the style. Let’s see.

This is Quarteto Excelsior – Jantar Dancante (1955) 10-Inch, for Copacabana. This is the first record released by Maestro Zaccarias and his Quarteto Excelsior, once again delivering a record ahead of its time. Jantar Dancante was released two years earlier than Coquetel Dancante (already available at Loronix) and it is even better. Maestro Zaccarias delivers nice clarinet solos and sings such like Bossa Nova performing with Fats Elpidio, Bill and Romeu. Tracks include:

Quarteto Excelsior – Coquetel Dancante Nr. 1 (1957)

This is the first out of a series of really unique LPs, mainly Brazilian instrumental music from the late 50’s and 60’s. The source of this series comes from another donation to Loronix, made by someone that lives in Rio de Janeiro and this is the only thing I know about. It was just a matter of exchanging three or four emails to receive a box of twelve LPs dropped by someone at my building Lobby.

I decided to start with this one, recorded in 1957 – which is before Bossa Nova – and with a lot of Bossa Nova on it. This album confirms that Bossa Nova creation was a jointly work forged by several Brazilian artists, such as Quarteto Excelsior, a very well arranged and wonderfully played album with a cool male singing, very similar to that one we know as Bossa Nova way of singing.

This is Quarteto Excelsior – Coquetel Dancante Nr. 1 (1957), for RCA Victor. I will be straightforward, personnel listing is enough to explain this release, but I want to highlight Maestro Zaccarias, delivering solid clarinet solos and singing on a surprising and smooth voice for that time and Fats Elpidio, a legendary Brazilian pianist with a few albums already available at Loronix. Tracks includes:

PersonnelMaestro Zaccarias
(clarinet, voice)
Fats Elpidio
(piano)
Bill
(bass)
Romeu
(drums, vocals)

Track List

01 – Baião do Lavrador (Valdrido Silva / Zaccarias)
02 – Abre a Janela (Roberto Roberti / Arlindo Marques Júnior)
03 – Lá no Norte (Gilvan Chaves)
04 – Tiradentes (Estanislau Silva / Penteado / Décio Carlos)
05 – Pau-de-arara (Luis Gonzaga / Guio de Morais)
06 – Batuque no Morro (Russo do Pandeiro / Sá Róris)
07 – The Very Thought Of You (R. Noble) Love Me Tender (Elvis Presley / V. Matsen) Anastasia (Paul Francis Webster / A. Newman)
08 – Petticoats Of Portugal (Durso / Mitabel) Angustia (Orlando de Brito) Esperame En El Cielo (Francisco Lopez Vidal “Paquito”) Que Murmuren (R. Fuentes / R. Cardenas)
09 – You’re Sensational (Cole Porter) I Love You Samantha (Cole Porter) True Love (Cole Porter)

Fats Elpidio – Fats Samba (1964)

I have to admit that my first contact with Fats Elpidio was here at Loronix. Caetano is responsible for making this extraordinary artist available for us through one of his first contributions, Fats Elpidio – Piano Bossa Nova (1960), here. This is probably the last solo album by Fats Elpidio. I made a short research and now I known that Fats Elpidio, is probably alive and after this supposed last release he joined the legendary Orquestra Tabajara, made several records as a side man and was also member of Elza Soares and Eliana Pittman support group as a sideman. It is unbelievable that he did not make more albums as main performer.

This is Fats Elpidio – Fats Samba (1964), for Copacabana. The cover you see and the music you hear is from a later issue by Beverly. Fats Samba is the kind of album that can make dance and kick around the house even the most timid friend in the world. Personnel lists top-notch musicians, delivering the best they could make under musical direction of the great Moacyr Silva. Thanks a million Caetano. Tracks include:

Mr. D&C will be pleased with this post. Since the fist list sent to zecalouro, Mr. D&C had this LP listed. I’m happy to have it now to Mr. D&C and Loronixers, it was part of another of those nice opportunities at the old vinyl shops in Rio.

This is Conjunto Balambossa – Poema do Adeus (no date), for Coledisc. Another Conjunto Balanbossa LP was released last year. I remember that I said that sometimes the record companies uses to create bands or groups just to make specific releases. I think this is also the case, this LP is different from that one and seems to be played by different musicians. Let’s see what happens. Tracks include:

01 – Na Cadência do Samba (Ataulfo Alves / Paulo Gesta)
02 – Chora Tua Tristeza (Oscar Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini)
03 – Nós e o Mar (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
04 – Se Você Disser Que Sim (Luis Bandeira)
05 – Tamanco no Samba (Orlann Divo / Hélton Menezes)
06 – Quem Manda na Minha Vida (Herivelto Martins / Raul Sampaio)
07 – Poema do Adeus (Luis Antônio)
08 – Samba da Madrugada (Dora Lopes / Carminha Mascarenhas / Herotides)
09 – Corcovado (Tom Jobim)
10 – Gamação (João Roberto Kelly)
11 – Palhaçada (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
12 – Volta Por Cima (Paulo Vanzolini)

.

Sorry friends, I could not resist to another trombone release. This is not exactly a trombone LP, but has the arrangements of Carioca and the mighty Nelsinho do Trombone, which is entertainment guaranteed. By the way, another nice released provided by our great friend Caetano Rodrigues. Very beautiful.

Meet Fats Elpidio – Piano Bossa Nova (1960), for RCA Victor, also, the first Fats Elpidio release at Loronix. Fats Elpidio is a Brazilian pianist and composer, also known as Pernambuco, started his career in 1930 at Orquestra de Jonas Silva and among many contributions for Brazilian music he is also credited to be the first to perform a Jazz concert in Rio de Janeiro at Fluminense Football Club.

Caetano is always surprising zecalouro with these jewels. I admit that I never heard a Fats Elpidio LP in my life and I can say that any serious Brazilian music collector should open a slot to Fats Elpidio. Fats discography is huge. He recorded some LPs in the late 50’s as Fats Elpidio e Seu Conjunto that should be amazing picks.

Piano Bossa Nova has arrangements by Carioca and Nelsinho leading top-notch musicians: Fats Elpídio (piano), Del Loro (guitarra), Ari (trompa), Maurílio (piston), Ari Ferreira (flute), Luis Marinho (bass), Plinio (drums), Aurino (sax tenor) and Barão & Gilberto (percussion). Tracks include:

01 – Meditação (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
02 – Samba de Uma Nota Só (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
03 – Bossa Novíssima (Tutuca / Ivan Paulo da Silva “Carioca”)
04 – Pior Pra Você (Evaldo Gouveia / Almeida Rego)
05 – Chora Tua Tristeza (Oscar Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini)
06 – Presidente Bossa Nova (Juca Chaves)
07 – Menina Feia (Oscar Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini)
08 – Carinho e Amor (Tito Madi)
09 – Teleco-teco Nº 2 (Nelsinho / Oldemar Magalhães)
10 – Três Amores (Zaccarias)
11 – Era Bom (Hianto de Almeida / Macedo Neto)
12 – Menina Moça (Luis Antônio)
