Front

Hello, good evening! As told, Walter Wanderley is among us and bringing Maestro Portinho, delivering a blend of organ and sax, really unusual. In case you missed something about these giants, Walter Wanderley was a legend, acknowledged as one of the best Brazilian organists. He also made a solid career in the United State, releasing several records. Walter Wanderley passed away in 1986, United States, almost forgotten to the masses. It is sad that nobody remembers who Walter Wanderley was. Make a test, ask about Walter Wanderley for your friends with less than 30. Only a few will be able to say.

Maestro Portinho, is also a well-know musician to Loronix community and one of my favorite maestros. According with Zarville – Loronix Official Orchestra Music Advisor – Portinho is the Brazilian Maestro who is the best on mixing Samba and orchestral arrangements. Portinho is also an instrumentalist, play sax and clarinet. He also recorded some Choro albums. If there is something in common between these two musicians, I believe it is their constant work in studios, they were very active. Let’s see.

This is Walter Wanderley e Portinho – Orgao, Sax e Sexy (1964), for Philips, released just after Entre Nos, the first Walter Wanderley album recorded for Philips, which is one that I like very much. This cover artwork explains the repertoire of romantic tunes. Personnel listing was not made available by Philips. I hope you Enjoy this really hard to find Walter Wanderley LP. Tracks include:

Hello, Good Night! Today was dedicated to housekeeping, not at Loronix, I’m talking about the real world. I received several new albums and bought some others during the remaining weeks, so I decided to wash them all. It is easy; all you need is water, soap and your hands as a brush, making circles on the same orientation of the needle. In the middle of the work, I found this one to start our day.

This is Portinho e Sua Orquestra Escaldante – Fogo nos Metais (1971), for Copacabana. It was very nice to hear Portinho on a late album; we are used to hear his LPs from the early 60’s. Portinho uses the same approach of Juarez on his 1976 release, taking a more popular repertoire with more percussion instruments on the set. I said that Maestro Portinho is the master of mixing Samba with orchestra and he makes it again. This cover is alone a reason to be attracted by this record with Portinho in the middle of his musicians and instruments. Tracks include:

01 – O Cafona (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
02 – Pé de Manacá (Hervé Cordovil / Marisa Pinto Coelho)
03 – Mas Que Doidice (Antônio Carlos Marques / Jocafi)
04 – Ai Que Saudades da Amélia (Ataulfo Alves / Mário Lago)
05 – Você Abusou (Antônio Carlos Marques / Jocafi)
06 – Foi Um Rio Que Passou Em Minha Vida (Paulinho da Viola) — Festa Para Um Rei Negro (Zuzuca)
07 – Tema de Fogo nos Metais (Portinho)
08 – Shirley – Sexy (Fred Falcão / Arnoldo Medeiros)
09 – Odete (Herivelto Martins)
10 – Menina da Ladeira (João Só)
11 – Esta Noite Serenou (Hervé Cordovil)
12 – Tema da Gaiola de Ouro (Alfredo Borba)

Among the last contributions by the great Caetano Rodrigues, this one is making a great success here. This is Maestro Portinho e Sua Orquestra – Fogo nos Metais (1963), for Philips. zeca seems to understand that we have here Maestro Portinho doing his best, which is the perfect mix of Samba rhythms with orchestral arrangements. Hello, Good Night! I decided to start the day with Portinho, not the drummer, but the Maestro Portinho with Portinho e Sua Orquestra – Fogo nos Metais (1965), for Continental. This record is exactly what is described in the title and shown at this nice cover artwork, Sambas on an orchestra, very swinging and dancing with brass instruments at foreground with Maestro Portinho arrangements.

Noel Rosa is one of the main Brazilian music figures of all times, he is responsible for a revolution, bringing to Brazilian music sophisticated harmonies and lyrics with informal social themes and life in Rio de Janeiro. Noel Rosa was born in 1910 and has passed with only 27 years old. It is amazing that more than 60 years after his passing, Noel Rosa is still fresh and celebrated by renowned Brazilian artists. zecalouro strongly recommends that you take a time to read Noel Rosa bio from AMG.
