Hello, good evening! It is good to be back to Loronix after a long and unplanned break. The villain was that recurrent upload speed problem I now have on my new place. As I was really busy, I decided that a break would be appropriate to accelerate certain things here. Now it is time to resume Loronix. Fellows, I’m back and I’m back with some solid records in a row. Although unplugged, kept the habit of transferring old records, even as a kind of occupational therapy. Let’s see.

This is Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto – Sax Sensacional Nr. 5 (1964), for Copacabana, which is the last album recorded by Moacyr Silva on his successful “Sax Sensacional” series of five albums, and the fourth of the series at Loronix. I really enjoyed this fifth volume, which unfortunately did not bring credits for the Conjunto members that certainly brings Chaim Lewak at the piano, delivering great duels with Moacyr Silva tenor sax. Tracks include:

PS.: A few years ago I decided to get rid of TV sets, but I decided to install a TV at home this week. I am positively impressed with the musical programming, which now shows Marisa Gata Mansa and Carlos Lyra singing Bossa Nova together. Good.

Hello, good evening! The availability of new albums over time at Loronix is a recurrent and very frequent question. It is natural to think in some point there will be no new albums available. I never had such fear, especially today, which is the day another Moacyr Silva LP never published at Loronix is been released.

This is the eighteenth album with Moacyr Silva participation at Loronix. And this is not a fraction of his entire discography. If you are new to Loronix or new to Moacyr Silva, check the related albums option below and be amazed by his music. Let’s see.

This is Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto – Sax Sensacional Nr. 3 (1962), for Copacabana, featuring Moacyr Silva tenor sax in front of two bands, a quintet (performing Samba tunes) and a quartet (performing the remaining songs, identified as “Foxes”). Personnel listing features a constellation of Brazilian musicians, including Chaim Lewak (besides Moacyr Silva, the only that performs on both bands), Waltel Branco, Tiao Marinho, Ohana (from Tamba Trio) and a drummer credited as Edson, which is 99.99% guaranteed to be Edison Machado (Luiz Harding, please help!).

We are starting a big weekend in Brazil and I would like to send my positive vibrations to Loronix community, wishing a very nice weekend. Tracks include:

Hello, good evening! While waiting for a Moacyr Silva album reissued in the CD format, I would like to reactivate and show an improved version of E Tempo de Samba, which is one of the first vinyl transfers I did to Loronix’s community. I will never understand why Moacyr Silva never had a career album reissued. The only way to listen to his music is from the old LPs or from music sharing blogs, such like Loronix. I heard many times that Moacyr Silva can be easily compared with acclaimed Jazz musicians and several friends said that went crazy when spinning his music for the first time. Anyway, this is an early Moacyr Silva album, recorded in 1963, the first he makes backed by an orchestra. Let’s see.

This is Moacyr Silva, Sua Orquestra e Coro – E Tempo de Samba (1963), for Copacabana, featuring Moacyr Silva tenor sax backed by orchestra conducted by Maestro Jose Pacheco Lins, also known as Maestro Pachequinho. My apologies to Maestro Diogo Pacheco, which I gave credit as Maestro Pachequinho at the original post and also when I met him personally on a business event in the end of the 1990’s. That’s all friends! I hope you enjoy Moacyr Silva with Orchestra as I did yesterday and today when writing these lines. I’ll be also waiting for Zarville’s feedback, Loronix official orchestra album reviewer. Personnel listing was not credited by Copacabana. Tracks include:

Elizeth Cardoso - Grandes Momentos Com Elizeth Cardoso

It is surprising that we still have Elizeth Cardoso albums not yet shown at Loronix and also out of print. This album was kept on “waiting position” for a long time; I thought it was only a compilation of her best songs released in the 78 RPM format. I decided to compare these recordings with their respective 78rpm releases and could easily understand that Grandes Momentos com Elizeth Cardoso is a career album with new recordings of her major success in 78s. Once again, Elizeth Cardoso delivers a lovely record featuring the artistic direction of Moacyr Silva, who also puts his tenor sax to play. When Elizeth Cardoso and Moacyr Silva work together it is a failure proof mission. Let’s see.

This is Elizeth Cardoso – Grandes Momentos com Elizeth Cardoso (1962), for Copacabana, featuring new recording of very old Elizeth Cardoso cuts. I think you will feel uncomfortable as I was reading “ELIZETE” instead of “ELIZETH” as we are used. This is not an error; Elizeth Cardoso only adopted the “TH” in 1966. Copacabana did not credit musicians in this session. Tracks include:

01 – Canção de Amor (Chocolate / Elano de Paula)
02 – Caixa Postal Zero Zero (Oscar Bellandi / Luis de França)
03 – Subúrbio (Luis Antônio)
04 – O Amor É Uma Canção (José Maria de Abreu / Jair Amorim)
05 – Se Eu Pudesse (José Maria de Abreu / Jair Amorim)
06 – Dá-me Tuas Mãos (Erasmo Silva / Jorge de Castro)
07 – Graças a Deus (Carioca)
08 – Nunca É Tarde (João Pinto)
09 – Venho de Longe (Dermeval Fonseca / Alberto Ribeiro)
10 – Seresteiro (Zé Keti / Renato Lima / Tufic Lauar)

Marisa Gata Mansa & Moacyr Silva - Convite a Musica

Hello, good evening! This was the third night that I try to make a fantastic contribution by Jorge Mello, and in the last minute I realize a missing information or a new detail that needs to be added and the plan is postponed to the next day. It is an important post featuring one of the artists that Jorge Mello most admires and everything should work with no mistakes. Anyway, I believe tomorrow is the big day.

Meanwhile, we will stay in good company with a mandatory update featuring an artist that certainly defines Loronix, Moacyr Silva, accompanying a singer appreciated by many friends, Marisa, on her debut LP for Copacabana label in 1958. Let’s see.

This is Marisa e Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto – Convite a Musica (1958), for Copacabana, Marisa debut LP, backed by Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto in all tracks. I said that Moacyr Silva defines Loronix for many reasons. Moacyr Silva is a gifted musician with a very important contribution to Brazilian music as producer of several albums. And since Loronix creation in 2006, I never had the chance to see one of Moacyr Silva career records available on CD. I would be very pleased to see Moacyr Silva reissued one day. Tracks include:

Irany Pinto, José Menezes, Moacyr Silva & Sivuca - 4 Azes Em HI-FI

Hello, good evening! I have been away from Loronix in the past two days, but at the same time, I have never been so close to Loronix, acting behind the scenes and accelerating the work of reactivation of broken links. I have good news. Everything is working until October 15 2006 and from a grand total of 100 weeks, 79 are completed fixed up. I estimate additional 7 or 10 days to fix all weeks, and then Loronix should go back to business as usual. I think it is important to keep everybody informed about our progress. Don’t miss the Restoration Status Panel, always close to the first post.

Don’t miss also this truly amazing release, another album sent by Jorge Mello to our community. Let’s see.

This is Irany Pinto, Jose Menezes, Moacyr Silva, & Sivuca – 4 Azes em HI-FI (1958), for Copacabana. I think this cover and the musicians in this session make leads my writing to something not necessary, but I would like to say this album is not a compilation, they perform together across the whole session, with highlights to each one at specific tracks. Tracks include:

Personnel

Irany Pinto
(violin)
Jose Menezes
(violao)
Moacyr Silva
(tenor sax)
Sivuca
(accordion)

Track List

Elizeth Cardoso & Moacyr Silva - A Meiga Elizete, No. 3

This album brings a blend of elements that guarantee flawless and solid listen. The first is Elizeth Cardoso singing Sambas in another record from the A Meiga Elizeth series, which totals five albums, having in common the direction and participation of the legendary Moacyr Silva, which is the second element of the combination. The third element is something to be confirmed, but I bet all my coins that Walter Wanderley takes part at this session, as well some others from the same A Meiga Elizeth series. Everything works really nice here, except this little inspired cover artwork, unlike other Elizeth Cardoso releases for Copacabana, the record company that released almost all LPs recorded by Elizeth Cardoso. Let’s see.

This is Elizeth Cardoso – A Meiga Elizeth Nr. 3 (1963), for Copacabana, featuring Moacyr Silva as producer and tenor sax in some tracks. AdHoc says that every Elizeth Cardoso album is worth checking, which is something that I agree a hundred percent. Give this one a try and don’t miss the restoration status update post, bringing daily updates on weeks already restored and improved with large deluxe cover scans. Tracks include:

01 – Deixa a Nega Gingar (Luis Cláudio)
02 – Só Eu Sei de Mim (Luis Reis / Haroldo Barbosa)
03 – Leilão (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
04 – Saudade Particular (Manoel da Conceição / Lolita França)
05 – A Abelha (Paulo Valdez / Vera Brasil)
06 – Rimas de Ninguém (Vera Brasil)
07 – Canção da Manhã Feliz (Luis Reis / Haroldo Barbosa)
08 – Na Cadência do Samba (Ataulfo Alves / Paulo Gesta)
09 – Eu Quero Amar (Romeo Nunes / Nilton Pereira)
10 – Se Vale a Pena (João Roberto Kelly)
11 – Vai Jangada (Laís Antunes)

Elizeth Cardoso & Moacyr Silva - Sax Voz

This is one of those albums were nothing goes wrong, especially if you are a fan of Elizeth Cardoso or Moacyr Silva. For those who are members of both fan clubs – such like me – this album is real treat. What can go wrong with a record that brings together the voice of one of the greatest Brazilian divas and the awesome Moacyr Silva tenor sax? I think only zecalouro can jeopardize this post, making some his unforgiving mistakes. Let’s see.

This is Elizeth Cardoso | Moacyr Silva – Sax Voz (1960), for Copacabana, featuring 14 tracks with Elizeth Cardoso performing with Moacyr Silva on the odd tracks and Moacyr Silva and his Conjunto performing instrumental renditions of American standards on the even tracks. Moacyr Silva brought a constellation of Brazilian musicians in this session, including his favorite pianist Chaim Lewak, Jorge Marinho, Aurino, Julinho, Waltel Branco, among many others. Sax Voz has a continuation titled Sax Voz Nr. 2, released in 1961 for the same Copacabana label, our next target. Tracks include:

Moacyr Silva - Sax Sensacional 2

It is good to be back showing albums after a full day without new releases and much work to make our resources available on the temporary server. Actually, this post is a kind of personal catharsis after a day of many difficulties. Moacyr Silva is one of my favorite artists, and this album was one of the first I prepared for Loronix using my limited vinyl transfer resources at that time. This upgrade includes improvements on several aspects, from cover scans with removed scratches, a better transfer and the corrupted track 08 now fixed. Let’s see.

This is Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto – Sax Sensacional! Nr. 2 (1961), for Copacabana, with the acclaimed Moacyr Silva backed by Conjunto featuring the gifted pianist Chaim Lewak, Paulinho Baterista, Jorge Marinho, Geraldo and Rubens Bassini. Moacyr Silva delivers a repertoire blending Brazilian and American standards on the second Sax Sensacional! album from a series of 5 released by Copacabana, some of them are already available at Loronix and you can use Loronix Find It to check them out. Tracks include:

Moacyr Silva - Dançando Com Você Nr. 3

This repost address several issues, such as the cover artwork scans update, the music (now including the missing track 09 – Tudo ou Nada) improved by a new transfer and the FLAC option was added, but what is most important about this post is to introduce Moacyr Silva to the great number of new friends that joined Loronix in 2008. Moacyr Silva was not released this year and this is a nice opportunity to update this album and bring back this great artist to the front page. I’m retrieving the original writing. Let’s see.

Original text:

Hello, Good Evening! Everyday I blame myself on skip the image processing class when I was at school. I have a great problem on using image-processing software to make clean covers (2008: thanks to Mr. E., I’m now a quite skilled parrot on this subject). When I get a nice cover such as this one opening this post I feel very frustrated of not knowing how to remove marks, clean surface, among other tasks. In this example, I’m really mad with that circle mark made by the record living inside the envelop in the last 48 years. I hope to have this skill someday. Anyway, this cover is really magnificent and the music, at the same level. Let’s see what we have here.

This is Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto – Dancando com Voce Nr. 3 (1959), for Copacabana, another above of the average Moacyr Silva album, accompanied by “Conjunto” featuring his preferred pianist Chaim Lewack. Such like “Sax Sensacional”, “Dancando com Voce” is a series of records that started in 1956 with the first one on 10-inch format, the first Moacyr Silva LP, ending with “Dancando com Voce Nr. 4, released just before Nr. in 1959. This record was found on a very bad condition and some noise occurs (2008: the noise remains, but with great improvement and do not spoils this nice album). Loronix engineers failed on getting track 09, a big scratch made this track unplayable (2008: track 09 is now available). Tracks include:

Personnel

Moacyr Silva
(sax tenor)
Chaim Lewack
(piano)
Julio Barbosa
(trumpet)
Ed. Maciel
(trombone)
Hanestaldo Americo
(drums)
Raul Gagliardi

Bob Fleming Quartet – Sax Espetacular (1958)

Publicado em: Tuesday, October 23, 2007 by zecalouro

Hello, good evening! I think this cover artwork alone worth any effort made to have this album available to our community. Actually, I would make this post even with the worse music ever recorded in history. However, this amazing cover brings inside an amazing album, which is the first LP recorded by Moacyr Silva with the alias of Bob Fleming. Let’s see.

This is Bob Fleming Quartet – Sax Espetacular (1958), for Musidisc, featuring Moacyr Silva tenor sax with not credited musicians assembled on a quartet with sax, bass, drums and piano. Taking in consideration the release date, there is a great possibility of Chaim Lewak at the piano, being the remaining drummer and bassist a guessing exercise, since several different musicians were credited on late 50’s Moacyr Silva albums. Tracks include:

01 – Fascination (F. D. Marchetti)
02 – Indian Summer (V. Herbert / A. Dubin)
03 – Can’t I (L. Levett)
04 – Sonny Boy (A. Johnson / De Sylva / L. Brown)
05 – There Goes My Heart (B. Davis / A. Silver)
06 – Tammy (Jay Livingston / R. Evans)
07 – It’s Not For Me To Say (A. Stillman / R. Allen)
08 – Around The World In 80 Days (V. Young)
09 – A Portrait Of Jeannie (J. R. Robinson / G. Burdge)
10 – So Rare (J. Sharpe / J. Herst)
11 – E’bello (Vignali / Danpa)
12 – Whithout a Song (W. Rose / V. Youmsn)

Here we go on another Elizeth Cardoso album from the “A Meiga Elizeth” series, kindly sent by moos to Loronixers. This series has five albums and this is the third made available at Loronix. Top-notch musicians, including a mysterious organist credited as “Sir Walter Scott”, back Elizeth Cardoso. By the way, this alias makes easy to realize that a Brazilian organist also called Walter is behind Sir Scott. Let’s see.

This is Elizeth Cardoso – A Meiga Elizeth Nr. 5 (1964), for Copacabana, featuring Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto. Thanks once again moos, this album is solid from start to the end. Elizeth Cardoso rendition to Ze Ketti song Diz que Fui Por Ai is fantastic with Walter Wanderley organ swinging a lot with Elizeth. Rildo Hora is a special guest on track 11 – Encontro com a Saudade, backing Elizeth Cardoso with violao. Personnel is credit this time. Tracks include:

Hello, Good Evening! Welcome new Loronix friends, readers of A Gazeta, a newspaper from Espirito Santos state. A Gazeta published an article today at the first page of its cultural supplement, which is Caderno 2, bringing several new friends to our community. You can read the article using this link, here.

Since we have new friends, let’s start this Sunday with an artist that is all about Loronix, a fantastic contribution from the legendary moos from The Netherlands. We never go wrong with Moacyr Silva, the legendary tenor sax, arranger and producer of fantastic albums in the 60’s for Copacabana label, most of them for the great Diva Elizeth Cardoso. The bossanovadreamer sent to us the second Moacyr Silva career album, featuring Chaim Lewak and Dom Um Romao. Now it is time to zecalouro share with Loronixers his third career LP and the first at the 12-inch format.

By the way, in spite of several Moacyr Silva albums made available at Loronix, there are several ones missing. The picture in the right is a perfect example, revealed by Trix, this is a 1969 Copacabana 7-inch featuring The Jordans & Moacyr Silva, a real treat. Unfortunately, it is only available at e-Bay with a price I cannot afford.

This is Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto – Dancando com Voce Nr. 2 (1957), for Copacabana. Little I know about this very early Moacyr Silva album, personnel listing is not available and perhaps we have the same musicians of bossanovadreamer 10-inch. Tracks include:

01 – On The Street Where You Live (A. J. Lerner / F. Loewe)
02 – I Could Have Danced All Night (A. J. Lerner / F. Loewe)
03 – Sedutor (Osvaldo Lyra / Carlito)
04 – Chove Lá Fora (Tito Madi)
05 – You’re Sensational (Cole Porter)
06 – Vai e Vem (Luis Bandeira)
07 – Where Or When (L. Hart)
08 – Cry Me a River (Hamilton)
09 – Olhos Verdes (Vicente Paiva)
10 – Escravo da Saudade (Pereira dos Santos / Avarese)
11 – Jacyra (Moacir Silva)
12 – Só Com Você Eu Tenho Paz (Pereira dos Santos / Avarese)
13 – Da Cor do Pecado (Bororó)

American Dancing Quartet – My Reverie (1959)

Publicado em: Friday, July 13, 2007 by zecalouro

I have been showing this album to several fans of Moacyr Silva and the feedback received was good, with no exception. There is a reason for showing it to Moacyr Silva fans on this “test drive”, American Dancing Quartet is supposed to be Moacyr Silva Quartet, although personnel is not credited. This was the second question of the “test drive” and just one friend said no. Anyway, now we can make it to Loronix community, which I urge to use comments to give feedback.

This is American Dancing Quartet – My Reverie (1959), for Prestige. I think only Moacyr Silva can guarantee his participation on My Reverie, unfortunately, he passed away in 2002. My Reverie brings a repertoire with America standards, featuring a quartet based on sax tenor, bass, piano and drums. It is delicious to hear and very well played by the mysterious American Dancing Quartet. Do not let the Dancing title cheats you, this is 100% Jazz music. Tracks include:

01 – Sleepy Lagoon (J. Lawrence / E. Coates)
02 – On The Sunny Side Of The Street (D. Fields / J. McHugh)
03 – My Reverie (L. Clinton)
04 – I Cried For You (A. Freed / G. Arnheim / A. Lyman)
05 – Whispering (J. Schonberger / R. Coburn / V. Rose)
06 – Blue Moon (L. Hart / R. Rodgers)
07 – I Only Have Eyes For You (A. Dubin / H. Warren)
08 – Stardust (H. Carmichael / M. Parish)
09 – Jeepers Creepers (J. Mercer / H. Warren)
10 – Time On My Hands (V. Youmans / H. Adamson / M. Gordon)

Moacyr Silva – Sex Sax (1966)

Link original: Moacyr Silva – Sex Sax (1966)
Publicado em: Wednesday, June 27, 2007 by zecalouro

This album is being posted with the help of Luis Fernando Verisimo, I read today an old column written by the renowned Brazilian writer (and also sax player). The year was 2002, just a couple of days after Moacyr Silva passing. Verissimo made a comparison between Moacyr and Bob Fleming, anyway, Verissimo’s text is available bellow.

This is Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto – Sex Sax (1965), for Copacabana, one of the most relaxed Moacyr Silva albums I have ever heard. The repertoire is based on several different genres, such as Samba, Blues, Beatles and a composition by Moacyr Silva, Moacir and Blues. Personnel is not credited, but the organ player has that style that will make you think about Ed Lincoln or Walter Wanderley. Do not miss Luis Fernando Verissimo writing before tracks. Tracks include:

Verissimo – De Bob Fleming a Joe Bean

E o porteiro do edifício do Tom em Nova York só chamava ele de Joe Bean (“Where have you been, Mr. Bean?”) porque tinha entendido “Jobim” errado.

02 – Yesterday (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
03 – Só Resta o Meu Tormento (Moacyr Silva / Isis Rosa de Castro)
04 – Meiga Presença (Paulo Valdez / Otávio de Morais)
05 – The Shadow Of Your Smile (J. Mendel / Paul Francis Webster)
06 – Menina Flor (Luis Bonfá / Maria Helena Toledo)
07 – Big Nick (J. Booker)
08 – Vem Chegando a Madrugada (Noel Rosa de Oliveira / Zuzuca)
09 – Moacir And Blues (Moacyr Silva)
10 – Leme (Victor Freire / Armando Cavalcanti / Roberto Nascimento)
11 – Love Letters (V. Young / E. Heyman)
12 – Eu Compro Essa Mulher (Erlon Chaves / David Nasser)

Hello, Good Evening! Mr. E., please, stop torturing us… I cannot stand longer… Just kidding. I feel like tortured when Mr. E. comes to my mailbox saying “I’m working on a new surprise for the next week…” I cannot wait quiet until the “surprises” reaches my hands, because I know it is always amazing. Take this one as the perfect example, a new Brazilian female singer, pretty unknown to everybody with orchestra and conjunto support lead by the legendary Moacyr Silva. Thanks Mr. E.

This is Mara Silva – Sucessos em Teleco-Teco (1962), for Copacabana. Little is known about this new singer. Mara Silva recorded several 78RPMs from the early 50’s, until this first and only LP for Copacabana. She was also a composer, performing her own compositions on several 78RPMs. This is a lovely Samba album with Moacyr Silva in charge of production and performing with Sua Orquestra e Conjunto, Maestro Diogo Pacheco — Pachequinho — is in charge of all arrangements. If someone has additional information about Mara Silva, please let us know about. Tracks include:

01 – Tudo Cabe Num Beijo
02 – Frio Em Minh’alma
03 – Alguém Me Disse
04 – Desesperadamente
05 – Rosa de Maio
06 – Pecado
07 – Vereda Tropical

Bob Fleming Quartet – Sax em HI-FI (1958)

Publicado em: Sunday, June 03, 2007 by zecalouro

Hello, Good Evening! Autumn in Rio de Janeiro was the coldest on in the last 40 years. I do not remember cold temperatures such like these on May. This is a major problem for zecalouro and for the first time I had to place a heater on his room, this should be the first night with this artificial heating. Perhaps I will move to his place if the house gets colder in the middle of the night. Today we had a lot of fun with another album from one of our favorites and I could not resist showing to Loronixers.

This is Bob Fleming Quartet – Sax em HI-FI (1958), for Musidisc, pretty old and good Bob Fleming album, his second LP for Musidisc and the second all time release by this fictional sax player, which is the legendary Moacyr Silva. Bob Fleming Quartet personnel is not credited, but I could hear the touch of Chaim Lewak on piano, the others – bass and drums – are not identified. Perhaps they are credited on first Bob Fleming Quartet album for Musidisc, Um Sax Espetacular. If someone has this LP, we appreciate to have this information. Bob Fleming Quartet performs a repertoire based on American Jazz standards, very nice for a cold Sunday night. Tracks include:

01 – Manhattan (Rodgers / Hart)
02 – I Get a Kick Out Of You (Cole Porter)
03 – Over The Rainbow (Harold Arlen / E. Y. Harburg)
04 – Who (O. Harbach / O. Hammerstein II)
05 – I Won’t Cry Anymore (A. Frisch / F. Wise)
06 – An Affair To Remember (H. Adamson / L. McCarey / T. Chandler / H. Warren)
07 – Cheek To Cheek (Irving Berlin)
08 – Stormy Weather (Harold Arlen / T. Koehler)
09 – Love Letters In The Sand (J. F. Coots / N. Kenny / C. Kenny)
10 – My Funny Valentine (Rodgers / Hart)
11 – Because Of You (A. Hammerstein / D. Wilkinson)

Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto – Samba e Bom Assim (1961)

This is a special post. I got this album from our Loronix friend Marcus Wagner, he gave it in my hands while we had been together at Drink Cafe to celebrate Loronix first year. Marcus Wagner is really nice, he has very good ideas in mind and they are all about Bossa Nova. Remember the last challenge with Johnny Alf, Edison Machado and Tiao Neto? That picture was taken from Marcus website, which is all about Bossa Nova pictures at http://bdbossa.blogspot.com.

Thanks Marcus, this is a pretty old Moacyr Silva album that I never heard about. Mr. E. had also an important participation on this post, making cover restoration to show it perfect to Loronixers. Mr. E. is giving distance-learning classes on image processing to zecalouro and I swear I will be a dedicated student.

This is Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto – Samba e Bom Assim (1961), for Copacabana. I crazy for Bob Fleming and Moacyr Silva participations on other artists albums, but nothing compares to Moacyr Silva solo album accompanied by Seu Conjunto. Thanks once again Marcus. Personnel is not credited this time, feel free to guest who was in the set, my best guess on piano is Chaim Lewak, who agrees or disagrees? Tracks include:

01 – Murmúrio (Djalma Ferreira / Luis Antônio)
02 – Tema do Boneco de Palha (Vera Brasil / Sivan Castelo Neto)
03 – Ninguém Sabe de Nós (Moacyr Silva / Antonio Maria)
04 – Corcovado (Tom Jobim)
05 – Por Causa Dela (Paulo Valdez)
06 – Maldade (Jair Amorim / Evaldo Gouveia)
07 – Rimas de Ninguém (Vera Brasil)
08 – Quando a Esperança Vai Embora (Tito Madi)
09 – Quando Ela Se Foi (Moacyr Silva / Antônio Maria)
10 – Percentagem de Amor (Dunga)
11 – Volta (Djalma Ferreira / Luis Bandeira)

Marisa & Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto – Convite a Musica Nr. 2 (1958)

Caetano Rodrigues will think I’m going nuts with this post, we spent almost an hour discussing alternatives to reach a different decision, but a last minute technical problem was identified and the agreed album needs to be postponed. I’m wondering if you think we are crazy and if you think we are crazy you are 100% correct, it is really insane to spend a lot of time to decided between gold and diamonds since all Caetano collection is great from the start to end. We love the work we do at Loronix and the time we spent on decision-making is on the benefit of everybody. Sorry Caetano, this busy parrot will settled a little down after our celebration.

This is Marisa & Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto – Convite a Musica Nr. 2 (1958), for Copacabana, the best of both words album blending instrumental tracks provided by the legendary Brazilian sax tenor Moacyr Silva and the renowned Brazilian singer Marisa, also known as Marisa Gata Mansa. Convite a Musica Nr. 2 follows Nr. 1, already available at Loronix and in my humble opinion is very much better than the first one.

I learned a lot of new things with this album, I didn’t know that Marisa was part of Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto, performing together on nightclubs, such as the legendary Vogue, a feel blocks away from my place. It is funny, I miss Vogue nightclub and I never had the chance of being there, and actually, I don’t think I was born when Vogue was opened for business. I also learned that Moacyr Silva was influenced by the American Jazz sax player Coleman Hawkins, at least is what Lucio Rangel says at liner notes. That’s it. Thanks Caetano for Moacyr Silva, Marisa and Conjunto, featuring Chaim Lewak, Maurilio Santos, Edmundo Maciel, Raul Gagliardi and Hanestaldo Americo. Tracks include:

PersonnelMoacyr Silva

Edmundo Maciel

Raul Gagliardi
(bass)
Hanestaldo Americo

Track List

01 – Chega de Saudade (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes) – Marisa Gata Mansa
02 – Arrasta Pé (Maurício Santos) – Moacyr Silva
03 – Assim (Clóvis Santos) – Marisa Gata Mansa
04 – All The Way (Cahn / Van Heusen) – Moacyr Silva
05 – Quero-te Assim (Tito Madi) – Marisa Gata Mansa

Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto – Samba e Bom Assim Nr. 2 (1965)

Everybody knows that I have a special admiration to the tenor sax of Moacyr Silva. I have been trying to hide my preferences to Loronixers, since my role demands to be neutral. However, with Moacyr Silva, it is quite impossible to write about his music without passion. I hope you understand this.

Sometimes our friends surprise us with notes written at their other blogs or websites about Loronix or the artists that we learn to admire here. I could not resist to share this one, written by Daniel, describing Moacyr Silva on his website, let’s see.

” (…) a Brasilian musician with a Brasilian band, playing Brasilian music! That’s very different as you gonna hear it! Fantastic!!! It is also sure that such a great player as Moacyr SILVA couldn’t ignore the jazz tunes. That’s why you’ll find here two other exceptionals albums, one where Silva hides under the name of Bob Fleming, “Mr Sax” where he goes through standards. All the tunes you know plus … the sun! the other one, “E tempo de bolero” has also very well known tunes but… I can’t explain, you have to listen!!! He really sounds like the great ones of our collections. (…)”

I feel really proud when someone get along with an artist by Loronix and makes such statement, recognizing Moacyr Silva at the same place given to the great ones of his collection. Thanks a lot Daniel for your enthusiasm.

This is Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto – Samba e Bom Assim Nr. 2 (1965), for Copacabana. Samba e Bom Assim features Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto, which is Moacyr Silva at his best, accompanied by great musicians, such as the legendary Chaim Lewak at the Piano, the bass of Luis Marinho and Rubens Bassini as percussionist. Caetano asked to mention the work of Chaim Lewak on track one, Verao no Meu Rio, Chaim plays a wonderful piano at this tune. Thanks once again Caetano, this “Moacyr” is really hard to find, missing on mine and on several other friends’ collection. Tracks include:

01 – Verão no Meu Rio (Carlito / Carla Baroni)
02 – Saudade Esperança (Jota Júnior / Alcyr Pires Vermelho)
03 – Conserve o Seu Lugar (Moacyr Silva / Avarese)
04 – Amor e Paz (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
05 – Chega de Sonhar (Pernambuco)
06 – Garota Zona Norte (Ivan Paulo / Cosme Teixeira)
07 – O Meu Pecado (Zé Keti)
08 – Jogue Fora a Tristeza (Moacyr Silva / Avarese)
09 – Alma Em Serenata (Marino Pinto / Paulo Valdez)
10 – Vai Saudade (Waldir Calmon / Fernando Barreto)

Muchacho nas Bocas – Um Sax Muito Louco (1973) featuring Moacyr Silva and Ed Lincoln

Hello, Good Night! I’m starting today with this obscure LP that I was lucky to find on those R$1 bargains in Rio de Janeiro. In a first sight, the cover was not inspiring, but the record label was Equipe and the price given worth the enterprise. I use to wash all records I bought as soon as I get home, also playing a little bit of them. It was necessary to listen everything to recognize the sax of the legendary Moacyr Silva and the organ of Ed Lincoln. Later on I could double check on Sombras, a website that you should not miss, owned and maintained by Sergio Ximenes that has been for years serving one of the most complete Brazilian music discographies at the Internet. Sombras is http://www.sombras.com.br.

This is Muchacho nas Bocas – Um Sax Muito Louco (1973), for Equipe, a short and relaxed sax and organ duel by Moacyr Silva and Ed Lincon on top of a popular repertoire that you will recognize easy. Just a warning for perfectionists, the overall quality of the music is good, however, two tracks were marked by a deep scratch, still audible, but without spoiling the listening pleasure. Tracks include:

01 – Tem Capoeira
02 – Minha Viola
03 – Amor, Amor
04 – Desafio
05 – Ninguem Tasca (Gaviao)
06 – Se Ela Quer
07 – Mexe Mexe
08 – Esperancas Perdidas
09 – A Danca do Cafune
10 – Baba de Quiabo

Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto – Sax Sensacional (1960)

Publicado em: Wednesday, February 07, 2007 by zecalouro

I’m having a great pleasure to make this post and I hope you have the same pleasure listening to this wonderful LP. I have been checking with the fans of Moacyr Silva about the availability of this album, I’m sure it is a very hard to find piece. This is the start of a series of five albums titled “Sax Sensacional” for Copacabana. I’m coming from a phone call with Caetano Rodrigues this first Sax Sensacional LP is a missing piece on his great collection. No more, Caetano, as soon as we finish this post, this record is yours, as my little contribution to your collection and all the effort you put daily at Loronix, supporting zecalouro and all our friends with those wonderful LPs and information you exchange with everybody. I hope you be pleased with this nice Moacyr Silva.

This is Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto – Sax Sensacional (1960), for Copacabana, the first of a series of five classic albums from this great Brazilian musician, featuring – according with Caetano – the best formation of Moacyr Silva Conjunto, which is Moacyr Silva (sax), Chaim Lewak (piano), Luis Marinho (bass), Paulinho (drums) with Rubens and Geraldo (percussion). This quartet (Moacyr Silva, Chaim Lewak, Luis Marinho and Paulinho) is truly great, special attention to Chaim Lewak piano on this album, always nice. Tracks include:

01 – Este Seu Olhar (Tom Jobim)

Hello, good night! I will start the day saying Welcome! to several new friends that had their first contact with Loronix today. Mariana Barros, from a major Brazilian newspaper in Sao Paulo, Folha de Sao Paulo, wrote an article mentioning Loronix, Thanks Mariana!

I made a try today to scare zecalouro with this cover and he could not understand that the image of a kitten as a real kitten. Perhaps the capacity of associate pictures with real forms is only a human gift. Ok! I’m finished with rubbish, let’s talk about the music.

This is Bob Fleming – Mr. Sax Serie C (no date), for Musidisc. If you are thinking we have a new artist to explore or a special post of an international musician, don’t stop reading. Bob Fleming is Moacyr Silva, the legendary Brazilian sax player with many LPs already presented to Loronixers. I could not check Moacyr Silvas reasons to adopt this alternative name for some recordings on Musidisc. Caetano is also also very interested to understand this character, Bob Fleming, since Bob Fleming still releasing for Musidisc after Moacyr Silva departure to Copacabana (record label).

The questions are many, for instance: Moacyr Silva performed which Bob Fleming records? Who is the second Bob Fleming besides Moacyr Silva? If you have something to add to this pile of uncertain, feel free to come and say. By the way, this record is truly amazing. Tracks include:

01 – Manhattan (Rodgers / Hart)
02 – I Get a Kick Out Of You (Cole Porter)
03 – Dancing In The Dark (Schwartz / Dietz)
04 – Who (O. Harbach / O. Hammerstein II)
05 – I Won’t Cry Anymore (A. Frisch / Freiwise)
06 – Affair To Remember (Harold Adamson / Harry Warren)
07 – Blue Moon (Rodgers / Hart)
08 – I’m In The Mood For Love (MC Hugh / Heusen)
09 – All My Tomorrows (Sammy Cahn / Heusen)
10 – Over The Rainbow (Harold Harlen / E. Y. Harbourg)
11 – Exodus (Gold)
12 – Stellaby (Washington / Victor Young)

The bossanovadreamer, official Loronix sax consultant, will be very happy with this LP, perhaps The Jazzman, also. I’m only a little disappointed to do not have the original cover issued in 1962, only this one, reissued a couple of years before. Anyway it is a great record that you will hear several times. Don’t let the “Bolero” title cheats you if you do not appreciates the genre, this is just another awesome Moacyr Silva sax LP.

This is Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto – E Tempo de Bolero (1962), for Copacabana, a selection of twelve International standards renditions by Moacyr Silva e Seu Conjunto, featuring Moacyr Silva (sax), Chaim Lewak (piano), Edson (drums) and Luis Marinho (bass). As you read, Chaim Lewak, the pianist from Quarteto Nostalgia LP, is a member of Moacyr Silva’s Conjunto and also makes the difference here. I’m not sure about the drummer, credited as Edson. By the playing style, it is probably the legendary Edison Machado. Anyway, pretty self-explanatory, Moacyr Silva seems to be one of those artists that are unable of deliver a bad record. Tracks include:

Personnel

Moacyr Silva
(sax tenor)

Chaim Lewak
(piano)

Edson
(drums)

Luis Marinho
(bass)

Tracks

01 – Stella By Starlight (V. Young / N. Washington)
02 – Laura (D. Raksin / J. Mercer)
03 – Yesterdays (J. Kern / O. Harbach)

08 – Tenderly (W. Gross / J. Lawrence)

Woow! Sometimes even zecalouro gets surprised with the grabbing he does inside his bag. Thanks to Rapidshare outage, that made him dig the deepest bottom of his ark to find this lost gem.

We had the chance to hear Moacyr Silva on several posts before, especially those two great albums he made with Elizeth Cardoso, the Sax e Voz volume 1 and 2 series. This is the first Moacyr Silva solo LP and I confess that I amazed with it.
Moacyr Silva, Orquestra e Coro – E Tempo de Samba Nr. 2 (1965), it is a nice instrumental album with the swinging sax in the hands of Moacyr dueling with the orchestra accompaniment in the rhythm of Samba. I will save your precious time, this LP speaks by itself. There is nothing to add here, it is truly amazing. Tracks include:

01 – Tema Pra Dedé (Nelsinho) — Tamanco no Samba (Orlann Divo / Hélton Menezes)
02 – Esperando (Marconi Campos da Silva / Hilton Accioli) — Morreu Num Beijo (João Roberto Kelly / Osvaldo Morais)
03 – Chora Tua Tristeza (Oscar Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini) — Onde Estava Eu (Armando Cavalcanti / Victor Freire)
04 – Tudo de Mim (Evaldo Gouveia / Jair Amorim) — Quando Ela Se Foi (Moacyr Silva / Antônio Maria)
05 – Sambadinho (Orlann Divo / Roberto Jorge) — Zé da Conceição (João Roberto Kelly)
06 – Amor de Ilusão (Edu Lobo) — A Mesma Rosa Amarela (Capiba / Carlos Penna Filho)
07 – Fio de Canção (Luis Antônio) — Está Nascendo Um Samba (Tito Madi / Romeo Nunes)
08 – Um Pouco de Você (Moacyr Silva / Joluz) — Desenhei Corações (Collid Filho / Oldemar Magalhães)

More than a few weeks ago, Loronixers were introduced to a wonderful Jazz LP with Elizeth Cardoso and Moacyr Silva – Sax e Vox, Volume I, still available here.

Now it is time to meet the Volume II. Elizeth has many fans at Loronix and this LP is so good as Volume I.

Today is Saturday, 23pm here at zecalouro’s office, not late enough to spend the night with this LP that fits beautifully on a Saturday night. Maybe the Loronixers on the left side of the globe will get this earlier to make their Saturday Night.
