Hello, good evening! Loronix received many new visitors today. Everything started at 10p.m. when we had on a single hour more than 300 visits, above the 120 average of a Monday evening. I had a lot of work to identify the reason, what was driving new people to Loronix late at night. The answer came from the analysis of the referral logs; everybody was using Google, mainly Google Image Search to find pictures of Maysa Matarazzo. TV Globo started today a novel based at Maysa career, directed by Maysa son’s Jayme Monjardim. Immediately, I started digging my collection after an album recorded by Maysa, but I could not make it today. In the other hand, I found this one sleeping on a very hard to reach part of my wardrobe and it was very nice to hear it after three years, since it was made available in the middle of 2006. Let’s see.

This is Zimbo Trio – Zimbo (1976), for RGE, featuring the special guests Hector Costita and Heraldo do Monte. Even if you already have the first Loronix issue you should take this one in consideration. The cover has now a hi-res scan, including the back cover and the music has a new transfer, including the alternative FLAC files. My favorite track is the opening 01 – Fe Cega, Faca Amolada (Milton Nascimento / Ronaldo Bastos), but as a 19Mb track, I could not make it available at Loronix Preview Center. 04 – Vai de Aracaju (Rubens Barssotti) is available there and it is also a really nice choice. Tracks include:

Personnel

Amilton Godoy
(piano)

Luiz Chaves
(bass)

Rubinho
(drums)

Hector Costita
(flute, sax)

Heraldo do Monte
(violao, guitar)

Track List

01 – Fé Cega Faca Amolada (Milton Nascimento / Ronaldo Bastos)
02 – Tudo Bem (Amilton Godoy)
03 – Brincando (Luis Chaves)
04 – Vai de Aracajú (Rubens Barsotti)
05 – Viola Violar (Milton Nascimento / Márcio Borges)
06 – Poliedro (Tito)
07 – Laurecy Até Já (Rubens Barsotti / Amilton Godoy)

Zimbo Trio - Zimbo Trio e Cordas Vol. 2 (1968)

It is always a pleasure to show friends a Zimbo Trio album and it is amazing to show a Zimbo Trio album never made available before at Loronix. It is also surprising to check Zimbo Trio records released in the 60’s and realize we have several ones never made available here, such like this one, the sequel of the already available Zimbo Trio + Cordas – E Tempo de Samba (1967). Let’s see.

This is Zimbo Trio – Zimbo Trio + Cordas Vol. 2 (1968), for RGE, featuring Zimbo Trio with strings accompaniment. Little I know about this album that brings six Chico Buarque compositions and has liner notes written by Chico Buarque. The back cover brings photos of Zimbo Trio in Paris, France, perhaps this album was recorded in Paris, but I could not Google a confirmation. Anyway, this is Zimbo Trio and every Zimbo Trio LP worth the attention. Tracks include:

Personnel

Amilton Godoy
(piano)
Luiz Chaves
(bass)
Rubens Barsotti
(drums)

Strings

Clemente Capella, Oswaldo Sbarro, Antonio F Ferrer, Lauda de Santi, Jorge Millas, Alexandre Ramirez, Joel Tavares, Antonio Torchia, Antonio Gianelli
(violin)
Bela Mori, Perez Dworeck
(viola)
Calixto Corazza, P. D. Taccetti
(cello)

Track List

01 – Roda Viva (Chico Buarque)
02 – Até Segunda-feira (Chico Buarque)

Elis Regina com Zimbo Trio - Zambi (1965)

selos

Hello, good evening! Loronix received today a large contribution from the great JOAO-SP, featuring LPs, singles, 10-inches and box sets, a truly awesome set of albums that I should start showing to our community in the forthcoming days, actually, in the forthcoming weeks, such big this great contribution was. Thanks a million JOAO-SP; Loronixers will get pleased as I got today when opening your package.

Since JOAO-SP contribution arrived today, I had to make the first in the 7-inch format, to make it fast. Let’s see.

This is Elis Regina com Zimbo Trio – Zambi (1965), for Philips, featuring three cuts extracted from Elis Regina & Zimbo Trio – O Fino do Fino (1965), a really hard to find single including the title track Zambi on Side A and a Medley on Side B, as detailed bellow on track listing. Tracks include:

01 – Zambi (Edu Lobo / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 – Esse Mundo e Meu (Sergio Ricardo / Ruy Guerra) Resolucao (Edu Lobo / Luiz F. Freire)

Publicado em: Sunday, October 28, 2007 by zecalouro

Hello, good evening! Teatro Paramount in Sao Paulo is part of Bossa Nova history. In the early 60’s, Walter Silva – also known as Pica-Pau, produced a series of concerts featuring renowned Brazilian artists that were very successful. Most of these performances were recorded and later released by RGE on 30 Anos de Bossa Nova series, featuring ten albums with five of these concerts produced by Walter Silva. Os Grandes Sucessos do Paramount is not a live recording of a given day, but a compilation organized by Walter Silva featuring the best moments of those days. Let’s see.

This is Os Grandes Sucessos do Paramount (1965), for RGE, with recordings from Teatro Paramount Bossa Nova concerts from 1964 and 1965. Two of these five albums with Teatro Paramount sessions are already available at Loronix, O Fino da Bossa (1964) and A Bossa no Paramount (1965), being this one my favorite. Alayde Costa and Titulares do Ritmo opens the record with an “a capella” performance of Onde Esta Voce (Oscar Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini) that worth the entire album. The remaining performers are listed bellow, with highlights to Walter Santos, Oscar Castro Neves Noneto, Zimbo Trio, Bossa Jazz Trio… Better stop to do not revel complete performers listing. Tracks include:

Performers

Alayde Costa
Os Titulares do Ritmo

Zimbo Trio – Fianca (1981)

Publicado em: Wednesday, September 19, 2007 by zecalouro

There is a story behind this post. I received this album from a guy who lives in my building, by the way, a well-known musician. I did not take it from his hands; he puts on an envelope at the lobby. When I open the envelope I saw this enigmatic logo with the white background and no words. I just left behind, deciding to give a chance to understand what it was later.

However, the symbol had something strange, looking familiar, as I had the chance to see it many times before. The answer came this week when I was visiting the website of our good friend Justin. Take a look at Justin logo, here or as a thumbnail in the left. Very wise of Justin to turn it upside down making this “F” as a “J”.

After this whole story, it was the time to check the LP again to learn more about this symbol and it was a great surprise to understand that “F” belongs to a Brazilian company called Fianca and the album was Fianca Christmas gift recorded by Zimbo Trio.

This is Zimbo Trio – Fianca (1981), for Fianca. Little I know about this company and this album, but seems to me it is Zimbo Trio – FM Stereo, released in 1974 with some modifications, there are five tracks not listed on FM Stereo. I would like to have both albums to check if the common tracks are from the same 1974 session or different. Anyway, it is a Zimbo Trio LP that I did not know it was recorded. Thanks to my mysterious neighbor. Tracks include:

01 – Esse Cara
02 – Na Tonga da Mironga do Kabulete (*)
03 – Cotidiano Nr. 2 (*)
04 – Trem das Onze
05 – Se e Pecado Sambar
06 – Apesar de Voce (*)
07 – Que Maravilha – Chove Chuva – Mas que Nada
08 – Falei e Disse (*)
09 – Tristeza Pe no Chao
10 – Folhas Secas
11 – Retalho de Cetim (*)
12 – Orgulho de um Sambista
13 – Ana Luiza
14 – Carinhoso

(*) Not available at Zimbo Trio – FM Stereo (1974).

I hope the problems that happened yesterday with the last post of the day are over, since this one really deserves a flawless exhibition. If you were looking for this album, you should say thanks to Loronixer Marcos, he was the one that told me this LP was a Zimbo Trio career album.

Shame on zecalouro. He always thought this was a compilation with music taken from other records; perhaps this simple cover artwork was not inspiring enough to get my attention. Anyway, thanks Marcos, you made me understand that I had a Zimbo Trio career album that I never heard and also never released at Loronix.

This is Zimbo Trio – Zimbo Trio (1978), for Clam / Continental, featuring Zimbo Trio original formation and several special guest of not, such as Heraldo do Monte and the son of the clarinetist Domingos Pecci, Eduardo Pecci, also known as Lambari from Quarteto Lambari. Pretty self-explanatory. I will let you with personnel listing and tracks. Um bom final de semana prolongado aos amigos do Brasil. Tracks include:

Zimbo Trio – Zimbo Trio Vol. 2 (1965)

I took a time today to visit the beach facilities of Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. They made a great work on assembling an infrastructure down here; the place is clean, secure and really beautiful. However, there is an exception, the music. We should admit, in the past, the offer was really better. We did not have iPods, CDs, etc. but the music available was fantastic, take this album as an example: there was a time in Brazil that instrumental music, such as this one made by Zimbo Trio, was commercially successful.

I think this is the main reason for the average of 3,000 daily visits Loronix receives everyday. The music available here is truly amazing and this fantastic Caetano Rodrigues contribution is the perfect example.

This is Zimbo Trio – Zimbo Trio Vol. 2 (1965), for RGE, which is the second LP released by Zimbo Trio. There is no much to say about this album, a solid listen from the start until the end. Some friends even say that this one is better then their first album, the “red” one, already released at Loronix. Once again, use comments section to give feedback and also say if you feel the need to get it in looseless format. Tracks include:

Personnel

Hamilton de Godoy
(piano)
Luiz Chaves
(bass)
Rubinho Barsotti
(drums)

Track List

01 – Arrastão (Edu Lobo / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 – Balanço Zona Sul (Tito Madi)
03 – Zomba (Maria Helena Toledo / Luis Bonfá)
04 – Insolação (Adilson Godoy)
05 – Zimba (Tito)
06 – Reza (Ruy Guerra / Edu Lobo)
07 – Samba 40 Graus (Adilson Godoy)
08 – Garota de Charme (Maria Helena Toledo / Luis Bonfá)
09 – Vai de Vez (Luis Fernando Freire / Roberto Menescal)

Zimbo Trio – Aquarela do Brasil (1993)

What more can we say about Zimbo Trio? These guys are flawless, they cannot make a bad album, even if they try to do that. No matter if it was released in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s or 90’s they keep the pace, delivering excellence on arrangements, performances and nice re-harmonizations of well known tunes. Aquarela do Brasil was first issued in 1993 and they perform with the same energy and happiness as their first 60’s LP.

This is Zimbo Trio – Aquarela do Brasil (1993), for Jazz Hour and issued in Brazil by Musiplay. Aquarela do Brasil is an album of the CD age, so we have noise free music and extended duration, approximately one hour of renditions to Bossa Nova standards, own Zimbo compositions and songs from modern Brazilian composers, such as Djavan, Joao Bosco, Aldir Blanc and others. What a day we had today with three really solid releases. Have a nice Sunday and stay tuned for the forthcoming Sunday night releases. Tracks include:

PersonnelAmilton Godoy
(piano)
Luiz Chaves
(bass)
Ruben Barsoti
(drums)

Track List

01 – Samba Dobrado (Djavan)
02 – Antiqua (Tom Jobim)
03 – Aquarela Do Brasil (Ary Barroso)
04 – Ao Piazzola (Luis Chaves)
05 – Coisa Feita (João Bosco / Paulo Emílio / Aldir Blanc)
06 – Beatriz (Chico Buarque / Edu Lobo)
07 – Asa (Zoo Blues) (Djavan)
08 – Canções E Momentos (Milton Nascimento / Fernando Brant) Caçador de Mim (Sergio Magrão / Luis Carlos Sá)
09 – Notas Que Falam (Amilton Godoy / Dulce Auriemo)
10 – Tema De Amor De Gabriela (Tom Jobim)

Well. What can I add to what is shown on this cover picture? Not much. This is simply Zimbo Trio debut LP for RGE, one of the most fascinating instrumental trios from Brazil. Actually, I have something to say, Caetano strongly recommends Garota de Ipanema as the instrumental rendition that he likes most. I would like to please Loronixers with Garota de Ipanema by Zimbo Trio on a video (with official images of Rio de Janeiro from Prefeitura-RJ), produced by zecalouro. I’m sure that you will jump on it before watching the video with Zimbo Trio on background.

This is Zimbo Trio – Zimbo Trio (1964), for RGE, featuring Hamilton Godoy (piano), Luis Chaves (bass) and Rubens Barsotti (drums). Tracks include:

01 – Zimbo Samba (Adilson Godoy)
02 – Menina Flor (Luis Bonfá / Maria Helena Toledo)
03 – Garota de Ipanema (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
04 – Inútil Paisagem (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
05 – Barquinho Diferente (Sergio Augusto)
06 – Berimbau (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
07 – Consolação (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
08 – Diz Que Fui Por Aí (Zé Keti / Hortêncio Rocha)
09 – Sou Sem Paz (Adilson Godoy)
10 – Vivo Sonhando (Tom Jobim)

Elizeth Cardoso & Zimbo Trio – E de Manha (1970)

I never heard about a second collaboration between Elizeth Cardoso and Zimbo Trio besides Elizeth Cardoso e Zimbo Trio – Elizeth e Zimbo Trio Balancam na Sucata (1969), already available at Loronix. I was “introduced” to this album on an old vinyl shop in Copacabana. If you appreciate the first, don’t miss this one, recorded at the same Sucata nightclub.

This is Elizeth Cardoso e Zimbo Trio – E de Manha (1970), for Copacabana, recorded live at Sucata Nightclub as part of a show directed by Herminio Bello de Carvalho. It is amazing how this record quality is so good taking in consideration the resources available in 1970. Elizeth and Zimbo Trio can be heard together in all tunes, except tracks 05 – Zazueira and 08 – Casa Forte, instrumental tracks featuring only Zimbo Trio.

Luiz Harding sent a video with excerpts of the Brazilian movie Noite Vazia (1964), directed by Walter Hugo Khuori with Zimbo Trio in charge of the soundtrack. I think this video fits very nice with this post, you can hear Zimbo Trio in the background while watching performances by the legendary Odette Lara and Norma Bengell. Tracks include:

01 – De Manhã (Caetano Veloso) Exaltação à Bahia (Vicente Paiva / Chianca de Garcia)
02 – Ilusão à Toa (Johnny Alf)
03 – Travessia (Milton Nascimento / Fernando Brant)
04 – Eu Disse Adeus (Roberto Carlos / Erasmo Carlos)
05 – Zazueira (Jorge Ben “Jorge Benjor”)
06 – O Conde (Evaldo Gouveia / Jair Amorim)
07 – De Onde Vens (Dori Caymmi / Nelson Motta)
08 – Casa Forte (Edu Lobo)
09 – Faixa de Cetim (Ary Barroso) Morro (Dunga / Mário Rossi) Sei Lá Mangueira (Paulinho da Viola / Hermínio Bello de Carvalho)

.

Thanks a lot Luiz, your effort on transforming your collection to Loronixers is of real value to us and to the Music from Brazil as a whole, your work makes such wonderful moments eternal, otherwise they would fall only on memories of a few privileged friends.

Publicado em: Sunday, March 04, 2007 by zecalouro

Hello, Good Night! It is nighttime by looking through my window to stare the sky with stars, however, I feel like in the morning. I slept very well this night taking also some naps during the day. Thanks for the great feedback given to Loronix Find It! I’m very happy to give an alternative to the Archives labyrinth.

That’s right! Being straightforward, we have here the first contribution from a Loronixer that does not want to be identified, let’s call him Mr. EB from now on. Mr. EB brings one of the instrumental groups we like most, supporting a great singer of the old times.

This is Claudya e Zimbo Trio – Entre Amigos (1994), for Movieplay, including 4 additional tracks only available at the CD version, which is the one sent by Mr. EB to Loronixers. It will be very nice to check a late work of Claudya, credited with the letter Y instead of U as we are used to read and Zimbo Trio. Mr. EB asks Loronixers to listen track one, Beatriz, very carefully as one of his favorite at this album. Tracks include:

01 – Beatriz (Edu Lobo / Chico Buarque)
02 – Tico-tico no Fubá (Zequinha de Abreu / Eurico Barreiros)
03 – Lamentos (Pixinguinha / Vinicius de Moraes)
04 – De Frente Pro Crime (João Bosco / Aldir Blanc)
05 – Upa Neguinho (Edu Lobo / Gianfrancesco Guarnieri)

08 – Cantiga Por Luciana (Edmundo Souto / Paulinho Tapajós)
09 – Fé Cega Faca Amolada (Milton Nascimento / Ronaldo Bastos)

Zimbo Trio – Opus Pop Nr. 2 (1973)

Some rule breaking with this last post. Sometimes it is good to break the rules. Loronixers seems to have organized a strategy to cry together for another Zimbo Trio. Who am I to run to the opposite side? Perhaps, Carnaval is coming, tomorrow is my birthday and Zimbo Trio is really great.

This is Zimbo Trio – Opus Pop Nr. 2 (1973), for Philips, the second volume for the acclaimed Opus Pop Nr. 1 for the same Philips, already available at Loronix. You will find the same successful receipe on Nr. 1, instrumental Bossa Nova blended with Classical music. I received today a comment on Opus Pop Nr. 1 from the Brazilian musician Budi Garcia remembering that both volumes were arranged by Maestro Cyro Pereira, a very underrated Brazilian artist that I’m celebrating with this post. Maestro Cyro Pereira is still active, leading the Orquestra Jazz Sinfonica de Sao Paulo. Tracks include:

01 – Sevilla (I. Albeniz)
02 – Festa no Sertão (Villa-Lobos)
03 – Wachet Auf Ruff Uns Die Stimme (Johann Sebastian Bach)
04 – Prelúdio (Frederic Chopin)
05 – La Danse D’anitra (Grieg)
06 – Playera (E. Granados)
07 – Sicilienne (G. Fauré)
08 – Largo (Johann Sebastian Bach)
09 – Narcisos (E. Nevin)

Zimbo Trio – Strings and Brass Plays The Hits (1971)

Publicado em: Wednesday, February 14, 2007 by zecalouro

I cannot say how many times I had to answer a very common question: “When you will run out of records at Loronix”? The answer is an estimate of mine that is always being moved away. Brazilian music from the years we like and we use to see at Loronix seems to be really huge. There is a lot to be explored and the big surprises are the LPs I find and never saw before from the great giants, such as Zimbo Trio.

This is Zimbo Trio – Strings and Brass Plays the Hits (1971), for Philips. Everything went as planned with this post. The cover artwork is one of the best I could make using my resources and the music was created using some upgrades installed today. It will be very nice to receive feedbacks on these files quality, I need to realize some do’s and dont’s, Loronixers feedback is essential in the process. No comments on this release, except that there are no Brass and Strings as the title suggest, but only piano, bass, drums and Zimbo Trio playing the hits, at Loronix.

Perhaps this should be the first day that Loronix finishes with a video, zecalouro is sick and tired today, if I get extra strengths I can make another close, but I think it is better let you with this nice video featuring Elizeth Cardoso and Zimbo Trio, recorded for TVE (1970), they are performing Sei La Mangueira. I hope you have enjoyed the day, different day with Tom Ze and the hard to find Dorival Caymmi. Bye.

This is Elizeth Cardoso and Zimbo Trio – Sei La Mangueira (1970).

Ze Carioca good feelings are making me feel better, so better that I could remember to release the second part of this concert, pending for several months. I decided to make it all together with important quality improvement on the music.

This is an anthological show featuring, Elizeth Cardoso, Zimbo Trio, Jacob do Bandolim with Epoca de Ouro with a story behind. In 1968, upon encountering economical difficulties, the Museu da Imagem e do Som of Rio de Janeiro (MIS) conceptualized a show with Elizeth Cardoso backed by Jacob do Bandolim, his regional Época de Ouro, and Zimbo Trio, directed by Hermínio Bello de Carvalho, to raise funds for their important work preserving culture.

The historic show was recorded and released on two LPs, both presented here. This recording was made with used tapes – that weren’t new, blank ones – by two MIS engineers in seven and a half IPS (instead of the professional 15 IPS) with modest two-channel equipment. The albums sold 80,000 copies and contributed notably to save the museum. In 1977 a third volume was released with the subtitle “Fragmentos Inéditos do Histórico Recital”, but this is for another occasion. What really matters is right here on this really important moment on Brazilian Music history. Tracks include:

This is Elizeth Cardoso, Zimbo Trio e Jacob do Bandolim – Ao Vivo no Teatro Joao Caetano 1 e 2 (1968), for MIS. Really self-explanatory, stay with tracks and personnel. Tracks include:

This is a really nice posts and the first one out of some requests made on Loronix Forum that zecalouro will be addressing. This release was recommended by the mighty JimR and made available through the help of Mr. Magoo, another mysterious contributor that was recently joined us.

This is Zimbo Trio – E Tempo de Samba, Zimbo Trio + Cordas Volume 1 (1967), for RGE, a very early Zimbo Trio LP, produced by Zimbo Trio and released three years before their debut LP in 1964. The “Cordas” at album title stands for a small string ensemble with violins, violas and cellos at the set. Thanks JimR for recommending and thanks Mr. Magoo for sharing. Tracks include:

I have been punishing myself since I got recommendations of nice Loronix friends to focus on Sebastiao Tapajos, the Brazilian violonista (acoustic guitar) player with more than 50 recorded albums. I don’t know who blame for this fault (the fact zecalouro never took Sebastiao Tapajos for a try), but hearing Sebastiao Tapajos LPs for the first time is such like receiving a new bike from daddy.

Let’s start with Sebastiao Tapajos with style, this is Zimbo Trio & Sebastiao Tapajos – Zimbo Convida Sebastiao Tapajos (1981), for Clam, really nice release, I have been hearing this LP every day and on each new try there are new treasures to discover. Another self-explanatory release. Tracks include:

01 – Danca (Luiz Chaves)
02 – Voce Nao Pode Ouricar (Alexandre Dantas do Amaral)

I had to make a very difficult decision between two choices for this post; so difficult that Google Talk was opened to find an on-line Loronixer to ask for help. The choices: A) Elizeth Cardoso e Zimbo Trio – Balancam na Sucata (1969), B) Pery Ribeiro – Pery e Todo Bossa (1963). If you were desperately waiting for B), blame it on Ticiana, she was the on-line friend that took the decision, but don’t worry, Pery Ribeiro will be released tomorrow.

Thanks for the pick, Ticiana, this is Elizeth Cardoso e Zimbo Trio – Balancam na Sucata (1969), for Copacabana, recorded live at Boate Sucata, Rio de Janeiro, an anthological show from the 60’s and another partnership between Elizeth Cardoso and Zimbo Trio. This album speaks for itself; Elizeth Cardoso singing with the Jazzy accompaniment of Zimbo Trio makes it a flawless release. Tracks include:

01 – Samba do Perdão (Baden Powell / Paulo César Pinheiro)
02 – Pra Você (Silvio César)
03 – Pressentimento (Élton Medeiros / Hermínio Bello de Carvalho)
04 – Ela Desatinou (Chico Buarque)
05 – Sentinela (Milton Nascimento / Fernando Brant)
06 – Sabiá (Tom Jobim / Chico Buarque)
07 – Exaltação à Mangueira (Enéas Brites da Silva / Aloísio Augusto da Costa) — Sei Lá Mangueira (Paulinho da Viola / Hermínio Bello de Carvalho)
08 – Canção de Marta Saré (Edu Lobo / Gianfrancesco Guarnieri)
09 – Ponteio (Edu Lobo / Capinan)
10 – Pra Dizer Adeus (Edu Lobo / Torquato Neto) — Adeus (Ismael Silva / Noel Rosa / Francisco Alves) — Vou Partir (Nelson Cavaquinho / Jair do Cavaquinho) — Sonho de Um Carnaval (Chico Buarque) — Marcha da Quarta-feira de Cinzas (Carlos Lyra / Vinicius de Moraes) — Avenida Iluminada (Newton Teixeira / Brasinha) — Mal-me-quer (Cristóvão de Alencar / Newton Teixeira) — Barracão (Luis Antônio / Oldemar Magalhães) — Canção de Amor (Chocolate / Elano de Paula)

I was getting used to the idea of never see, hear or touch this LP, since it is so hard to find and it is rarely available at old vinyl stores and auction sites. But zecalouro needs to understand that Loronix is getting new friends everyday and some last minutes new gems can appear by surprise.

This is exactly what happened with this record when a single email message from Ticiana was sleeping at my mailbox this morning with instructions to this LP. Thanks Ticiana, you made my day and the day of several Loronixers. How did you guess that I was tracking this LP down?

Anyway, Zimbo Trio – Opus-Pop – Zimbo e Orquestra – Clássicos com Bossa (1972) is the first LP out of a series of two where Zimbo Trio accompanied by an orchestra make his reading of classical repertoire with Zimbo versions of Bach, Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi, Villa-Lobos, Brahms and others. Unfortunately, the linear notes do not bring additional information on the orchestra arrangements and musicians. There is more to come from this Zimbo on Classics, the Volume 2 from 1973 is on the way. Stay tuned. Tracks include:

01 – Scheherazade (Rimsky / Korsakov)
02 – 9ª Sinfonia (Ludwig Van Beethoven)
03 – Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte (Maurice Ravel)
04 – Ária Para Corda Sol (Johann Sebastian Bach)
05 – “Primavera” das 4 Estações (Vivaldi)
06 – Prelúdio Nº 2 (Johann Sebastian Bach)
07 – Lago dos Cisnes (Tchaikovsky)
08 – Bachianas Brasileiras Nº 5 “Cantilenas” (Villa-Lobos)
09 – Pavane (Fauré)
10 – Sinfonia Nº 40 (W. A. Mozart)

Zimbo Trio e o Tom – Tributo a Tom Jobim, Volume 1 (1986)

zecalouro invites you to pick up each LP posted at Loronix to check if there is a Antonio Carlos Jobim composition. I do not know exactly how many, but easily more than 50% has at least a single song from Jobim. The Maestro is all around Brazilian music.

That’s why we should never go wrong with a LP from the most exciting Brazilian ensembles ever, the mighty Zimbo Trio, with an album full dedicated to Antonio Carlos Jobim. This is a 1986 LP with Bossa Nova style, a record that is good from start to finish, a superb set, very well played by Zimbo Trio. I got the cover reissued by Victor, which is the best one among the several reissues available. Tracks include:

01 – Felicidade (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 – Chega de Saudade (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
03 – Wave (Tom Jobim)
04 – Garota de Ipanema (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
05 – Só Danço Samba (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
06 – Desafinado (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
07 – Triste (Tom Jobim)
08 – Samba de Uma Nota Só (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)

zecalouro is surprised with the excitement around the last Zimbo Trio LP with the US Jazzman Sonny Stitt. Many new Loronixers have been dragged by that LP and being here since then as very loyal friends. Thanks to Jazzseen friends.

I’m curious to see what happens now with Zimbo Trio – Trocando em Miudos A Tristeza do Jeca (1983). On this LP, Zimbo Trio performs nice Jazzy versions of very popular songs of the Brazilian regional music – Tristeza do Jeca – and nice others Brazilian classics such like: Trocando em Miudos (Chico Buarque de Hollanda / Francis Hime ), Egberto Gismonti’s Loro (obviously, a zecalouro’s favorite), Chovendo na Roseira and Aguas de Março (Antonio Carlos Jobim).

The back cover has a cool handwriting message from Egberto Gismonti saying wonders about this LP. You can see the full version of this back cover here. Tracks include:

01 – Lôro (Egberto Gismonti)
02 – Serra da Boa Esperança (Lamartine Babo)
03 – Chovendo na Roseira (Tom Jobim)
04 – Luz (Djavan)
05 – Tristeza do Jeca (Angelino de Oliveira)
06 – Natureza Bela (Felisberto Martins / Henrique Mesquita)
07 – Águas de Março (Tom Jobim)
08 – Trocando Em Miúdos (Chico Buarque / Francis Hime)
09 – Aquele Um (Djavan)
10 – Atrás da Porta (Chico Buarque / Francis Hime)

Zimbo Trio e Sonny Stitt – Sonny Stitt in Brazil with the Zimbo Trio (1979)

There is something interesting about Zimbo Trio, they have recorded more than 40 albums on their long career, always playing Brazilian music exclusively. The only exception to this, is this record with the American Jazz musician Sonny Stitt, recorded in Brazil when Zimbo Trio was backing Sonny Stitt on a South America tour.

Sonny Stitt in Brazil with the Zimbo Trio LP was for years a collectors item, since it was released only in Brazil. A CD reissue was released several years ago on CD, going out of print. Tracks include:

01 – Hope’s Blues (Stitt)
02 – Corcovado (Tom Jobim)
03 – There you will never be another you (Warren – Gordon)
04 – Little Sued Shoes (C Parker)
05 – Autumm Leaves (Parsons – J.Prever – J.Kosma – Mercer)
06 – Samba do Orfeu (Antonio Maria – Luis Bonfa)
07 – Blues for Gaby (Stitt)

This record was sent to zecalouro by Jonh Lester, a Loronix friend that runs an wonderful Jazz Blog that you should not miss for nothing, Jazzseen.
