Hello! I’m very happy to announce a major upgrade on Find It, Loronix albums search application. You will not believe on what you will see there. Find It is now multi language and brings three different search sections.

You can use this tab to search only for artists

This one to search for albums

and the new Visual Find It to search on everything with cover artwork results.

Here is a brief explanation of the new system.

This is the opening screen with the three choices described before, pick up one to gain access to the search engine.

The Artist search is very simple, featuring only a list of artists available at our discography. Attention to the first column, it is the place you will need to click to see the albums available for a given artist or group. For a quick examination, you can use the preview, receiving a sample of the albums available for an artist (up to ten albums).

The Albums search is very similar to the old version. You can search for an artist name, an album name, a release year, etc. The word Loronix is the link you should click to reach the album of your choice.

The Visual Find It the great new feature. You can search for everything to receive an output with Loronix albums covers, this is really great. The word Loronix is also a link to reach an album at Loronix.

Additionally, Find It is now speaking several languages and you can easily switch to your language using this selector.

You can also adjust the amount of results received using this control to select the number of records per page.

I hope Find It makes Loronix experience much easier to everybody. Please inform bugs and translation mistakes using the comment section of this post.

Hello, good evening! Here we go on another very easy challenge game, this time with only one artist to be identified since I’m sure that everybody should easily confirm who is backing the singer with a guitar! Baden Powell, which I never saw playing guitar before. Piece of cake, who is singing?

Sorry, I could not resist extending today’s challenge a little bit showing Baden Powell again. Both photos were taken at the anthological Bossa Nova concert at Faculdade de Arquitetura, Rio de Janeiro, 1959. This second challenge has also only one artist to be identified. Just tell me how is playing trumpet behind Baden Powell. Not so easy, but I think people should make it very fast this time.

Hello, good evening! We have today a celebration to a very special day, the anniversary of Garoto, Anibal Augusto Sardinha, which would complete 93 years today if had not passed so prematurely with the age of 39. This is an important date that may have been noticed by a very small number of Brazilians, among them Jorge Mello, who kindly makes available to us an important album featuring Garoto recordings retrieved from Radio Nacional acetates.

Additionally, Jorge Mello sent us a article written for the occasion, describing this album, the importance of Garoto to Brazilian music and a very important item taken from his personal collection, a page of Garoto diary, written by Garoto on the day of his 39th anniversary, the last birthday he had the chance to celebrate.

Thanks Jorge Mello for your kind words for Garoto. A translation to English is being provided as soon as possible.

Jorge Mello

Anibal Augusto Sardinha nasceu na cidade de São Paulo em 29/06/1915. Nos seus quase quarenta anos de vida deixou uma obra de tirar o fôlego, tanto em quantidade como em qualidade (compôs pelo menos 220 músicas).

Destacou-se como multi-instrumentista, tocando com maestria o violão, bandolim, cavaquinho, violão tenor, guitarra havaiana, guitarra portuguesa e banjo. Tocava também violino, contrabaixo, violoncelo, piano e harpa, mas não se apresentava com os mesmos.

Escreveu inúmeras orquestrações e arranjos para os programas que fazia nas rádios. Uma parte significativa de sua vida artística foi passada na Rádio Nacional, atuando em programas como Um Milhão de Melodias, Música em Surdina, Nada além de Dois Minutos, Orquestra Melódica de Lyrio Panicali, Gente que Brilha, Canção Romântica, Quando Canta o Brasil e Noite de Estrelas, dentre outros.

Um Milhão de Melodias, cuja estréia se deu 6/01/1943, promoveu muitas inovações na parte técnica. A gravação dos ensaios, por exemplo, era feita em grandes discos de acetato com base de alumínio. Após estas gravações, as direções técnicas e artísticas do programa se reuniam para corrigir eventuais falhas como, por exemplo, o posicionamento dos microfones para a orquestra.

Estes discos possuíam características singulares: Eles giravam no sentido anti-horário e o braço da agulha (para a reprodução) ia do centro para a borda do disco. Eles são muito mais frágeis que um disco 78 RPM…

Outros programas da Rádio Nacional, como os citados linhas acima, passaram a usar este recurso. Estes discos vieram a ser a memória dos programas daquela emissora por um longo período.

Com a decadência da Nacional, o acervo desta emissora (incluindo estes discos de acetato, partituras para orquestras, catálogos, etc..) foi guardado em péssimas acomodações. “Paulo Tapajós encontrou os discos dos programas da Rádio Nacional jogados num dos banheiros da emissora e empilhados no corredor como coisa imprestável” (Trecho extraido do livro Rádio Nacional, o Brasil em Sintonia- Luiz Carlos Saroldi e Sonia Virginia Moreira). Não é difícil imaginar que muitos destes discos não tenham resistido a tanto descaso!

Em 1972 o que restou do acervo da Rádio Nacional foi transferido para o Museu da Imagem e do Som (MIS). Saroldi, em seu livro, diz que eram 40 mil discos, que ficaram inicialmente empilhados na sala mais tarde ocupada pelo acervo Jacob do Bandolim.

Em 1981 uma catástrofe! Um incêndio destruiu a sede do MIS. Mais uma remoção de todo acervo…

Paulo Tapajós, em 1979, extraiu daquele acervo as músicas que compõem este importante LP Garoto, lançado pelo MIS.

Conseguimos encontrar as datas em que algumas destas gravações,feitas no programa Um Milhão de Melodias, foram realizadas:

05 – Tico-tico no fubá, gravado em 29/11/1944 por Garoto (violão tenor) no centenário de apresentações daquele programa.
11 – Chinatown, my Chinatown, gravado em 12/07/1944.
12 – Chorinho do Ahú, gravado em 23/05/1945.
08 – Cavaquinho Boogie, gravado em 04/09/1952.

A música Duas Contas foi gravada no programa Música em Surdina em 11/06/1951.

Não saberia dizer a quantidade de discos de acetato que atualmente estão no MIS, assim como não sei em quantos destes, em bom estado de conservação, Garoto gravou como solista. Se soubesse quantos, poderia responder a pergunta: Quantos discos, tendo Garoto como solista, poderiam ser gravados?

I spent much of the last forty-eight hours thinking about on this post and this text, perhaps one of the most planned posts ever at Loronix. Different approaches were developed, but now I think it is better to forget all plans and write everything from scratch, instinctively on a single breath. I’m pleased to introduce to our community Jorge Mello, musician, composer, music researcher, teacher, book writer and a major reference of the works of Anibal Augusto Sardinha, also known as Garoto.

It is very easy to get along with Jorge Mello’s writing about Garoto and other Brazilian music subjects at the Internet. Sovaco de Cobra published a series of posts called O Cancioneiro de Garoto, with full Jorge Mello’s support. You can also reach Daniella Thompson’s Musica Brasiliensis website with several Jorge Mello’s contributions, such as this amazing writing about Trio Surdina.

At Loronix, I’m making a video with excerpts of ESPN Brasil Pontape Inicial show dedicated to Bossa Nova with the participation of Jorge Mello. It is a nice video, with ESPN friends talking a little bit about Loronix, thanks to Wilson Libutti for referencing Loronix to ESPN Pontape Inicial friends.

Well, thanks a lot Jorge. I’m sure your great sharing spirit will make a lot of difference to Loronix in the forthcoming days, actually forthcoming months. Maybe years?

Hello, good evening! Better start today with a challenge sent by a very good friend of mine showing a constellation of Brazilian musicians performing on a Jam Session in Copacabana in the year of 1955. Your mission is to identify who are the six musicians and also the last one, only having fun with the trombone, but an important character to Brazilian music in the 50’s. In spite of being well known musicians for Loronixers, this is a very difficult challenge.

I’m using this space just to let you know about the latest availability issues of Loronix complimentary applications and services. All my sites are down in the last 24 hours, which includes the ones that support Loronix and my customers’ websites and databases. I don’t have estimates of when they will be set to go again. In order to get things back at Loronix, I made a painful migration to a new server to restore some key applications to our community, they are: Loronix Find It, the new super deluxe impressive image covers and translation services.

In the other hand, Loronix Preview Center is no longer available; the migration is complex and involves major configuration changes and large amount of data to be transferred to the temporary server. Not affected or little affected by the downtime are downloads, CBox, blogrolling, Loronix Community Search, etc.

My apologies for this unplanned outage, I’m considering moving to a new hosting system that I can afford with the features I have on the current one, which is already contracted until December 31 2008.

Infelizmente não consegui a imagem deste desafio. O que aconteceu é que o Zeca mudou a sistemática de inclusão de imagens no Loronix justamente nessa semana de março de 2008 e, assim, as imagens não ficaram disponíveis nos feeds RSS, que era onde eu as buscava. Alguém teria a imagem para nos fornecer?
