Sebastião Tapajós - Sebastião Tapajós E Sua Guitarra Cósmica

We are back with Jorge Mello’s contributions, which are amazing in quality and also in size. I did not reach nearly half of the albums made available by him. Thanks once again, Jorge. This record was one of the first I prepared, but decided not to publish, since it was released earlier by Quimsy in his great Quimsy Mumbo Jumbo. However, I realized today with a back cover reading that Maestro Mário Castro Neves delivers arrangements and I could not resist on making at Loronix. Let’s see.

This is Sebastiao Tapajos – Sebastiao Tapajos e Sua Guitarra Cosmica (1968), for Forma, the third Sebastiao Tapajos career LP, produced by Joao Mello and arranged by Maestro Mario Castro Neves. The album opens with The Door’s Light my Fire, but soon turns back to the safe Brazilian music terrain with compositions by Sebastião Tapajos, Rildo Hora, Jorge Ben, Nonato Buzar, Antonio Carlos Jobim and others. Mario Castro Neves delivers creative and unique arrangements, actually, orchestrations, changing everything we are used to hear on standards like Wave and Zazueira. Tracks include:

01 – Light My Fire (Morrison / Manzarek / Densmore / Krieger)
02 – Rio das Ostras (Silveira)
03 – A Estrela e o Astronauta (Rildo Hora / Mário Castro Neves)
04 – Call Me (T. Hatch)
05 – Luar Em Veropeso (Tito Madi)
06 – Eu Quase Sozinho (Sebastião Tapajós)
07 – Cantiga de Errante (Rildo Hora / Heitor Quintella)
08 – A 200 P/h (Sebastião Tapajós)
09 – Zazueira (Jorge Ben)
10 – Wave (Tom Jobim)
11 – Sinhazinha (Nonato Buzar / Paulinho Tapajós)
12 -La Mentira (Álvaro Carrillo)

Sebastiao Tapajos is a gifted musician. He has a classical background and started with his instrument at the age of nine, encouraged by his own father, being also his first teacher. His classical training and interest in popular music defined his style by a blend of the two schools, providing a transparent connection between the classical and popular. Sebastiao Tapajos has close to 50 albums recorded, in Brazil and outside. However, most of his discography is still unknown to me, his albums are hard to find, especially those recorded on vinyl and who never had a chance of a reprint on CD. Violao & Amigos is a great find. Let’s see.

This is Sebastiao Tapajos – Violao & Amigos (1979), for RCA Victor, with the participation of Hermeto Pascoal, Paulo Moura and Mauricio Einhorn. I found this one a week ago, being sold for a ridiculous price. Since then, he has been constantly spinned. I was not able to accomplish an acceptable back cover restoration; being offered in the state it was found. I think this is a rather unknown record and I’m confident that our community will receive it with enthusiasm. Tracks include:

Sebastiao Tapajos - O Violao e... Tapajos (1968)

This is probably the most complex album restoration made so far at Loronix, including cover artworks and especially the music. I had to use that equilibrium of noise reduction against loss of frequencies, and I stood in the middle of it. There are many pops, clicks, clacks and hiss across the music, but this album is so beautiful and so hard to find that I decided to show friends, in spite of these problems. Let’s see.

This is Sebastiao Tapajos – O Violao E… Tapajos (1968), for Forma, the second album released by Sebastiao Tapajos, one of the greatest Brazilian guitarists, featuring only Sebastiao Tapajos and his violao, produced by Joao Mello. I think I said what I want in the beginning and this is a self-explanatory release, my apologies for the quality of the transfer. Tracks include:

01 – Doublé (Da Bourrée) (Johann Sebastian Bach)
02 – Canção do Fogo-fátuo (Falla)
03 – Cadência (Do Concerto Para Violão e Orquestra) (Villa-Lobos)
04 – La Catedral (A. Barrios)
05 – Cantiga (Da Suíte Nº 2) (Nicanor Teixeira)
06 – Czardas (V. Monti)
07 – Vento Vadio (Baden Powell)
08 – Carimbó (Sebastião Tapajós / Valmiki)
09 – Crepúsculo (Sebastião Tapajós)
10 – Valsa de Um Sonho (Sebastião Tapajós)
11 – Marambiré (Sebastião Tapajós)
12 – Benzinho (Sebastião Tapajós / Lenora)
13 – Ave-maria (Gounod / Adpt. Sebastião Tapajós)

Mauricio Einhorn - Sebastiao Tapajos (1984)

postIt has been more than a year since we made the last Mauricio Einhorn album at Loronix. However, Mauricio Einhorn music is across several albums available at Loronix as composer or sideman. I had the chance to listen to this one for the first time this week and my first idea was to listen again the other ones, Mauricio Einhorn – ME (1980) and Mauricio Einhorn – Jugando en Buenos Aires (1985) and they are also fantastic. I urge Loronixers to feedback this release with Mauricio Einhorn with Sebastiao Tapajos and the special guest Arismar do Espirito Santo. Let’s see.

This is Mauricio Einhorn & Sebastiao Tapajos – Mauricio Einhorn & Sebastiao Tapajos (1984), for Barclay/Ariola, featuring the Brazilian bassist Arismar do Espirito Santo. We have a great session here with five Mauricio Einhorn and Sebastiao Tapajos compositions on Side A and a single track on Side B, the one that I like most 06 – Suite pra Detinha (Mauricio Einhorn / Sebastiao Tapajos). These are fantastic tunes and perhaps they were written across the recording session since Sebastiao Tapajos said they went to studio with no rehearsals. Tracks include:

Personnel

Mauricio Einhorn
(harmonica)
Sebastiao Tapajos
(violao)
Arismar do Espirito Santo
(bass)

While Loronix technicians are preparing the today’s main attractions – two new and breathtaking releases by Caetano Rodrigues (c) – zecalouro wants to show a LP with several things to discover. First, it was released by Trova label in Argentina and a TAP aircraft is shining on this beautiful cover. Second, The trio, Sebastiao Tapajos and the not known – at least as I could search – artists Maria Nazareth and Arnaldo Henriques, who are them?

I will let you with the questions, presenting Sebastiao Tapajos, Maria Nazareth e Arnaldo Henriques – “TAP” (1973), by Trova, the previously mentioned Argentinean recording label. The arrangements are from Oscar Cardoso Ocampo, Argentinean Maestro and accompaniment is provided by Mário Fernández (bass) e Enrique Roizner (drums). Maria Nazareth and Arnaldo Henriques sing a repertoire with Brazilian standards. Tracks include:

01 – Meddley: Água de Beber (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes) — Tudo de Você (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle) — A Metade de Um Beijo (Reis / Duarte) — Quem Sabe o Mar (B. do Silva / Paulinho) — Por Causa de Você Menina (Jorge Ben “Jorge Benjor”)

I have been punishing myself since I got recommendations of nice Loronix friends to focus on Sebastiao Tapajos, the Brazilian violonista (acoustic guitar) player with more than 50 recorded albums. I don’t know who blame for this fault (the fact zecalouro never took Sebastiao Tapajos for a try), but hearing Sebastiao Tapajos LPs for the first time is such like receiving a new bike from daddy.

Let’s start with Sebastiao Tapajos with style, this is Zimbo Trio & Sebastiao Tapajos – Zimbo Convida Sebastiao Tapajos (1981), for Clam, really nice release, I have been hearing this LP every day and on each new try there are new treasures to discover. Another self-explanatory release. Tracks include:

01 – Danca (Luiz Chaves)
02 – Voce Nao Pode Ouricar (Alexandre Dantas do Amaral)
03 – Marajo (Sebastiao Tapajos / Rubens Barsotti)
04 – Preludio para Karen (Sebastiao Tapajos / Mauricio Einhorn)
05 – Um Pro Zimbo (Sebastiao Tapajos / Mauricio Einhorn)
06 – Recado pro Tiao Tapajos (Luiz Chaves)
07 – Lua Joa (Sebastiao Tapajos)
08 – No Balanco do Vovo (Luiz Chaves)
09 – Igarapes (Sebastiao Tapajos / Mauricio Einhorn)
