Elza Soares - Elza Miltinho E Samba (1967)

Elza Miltinho E Samba (1967)Back

Hello, good evening! This is the reposting of an album made available three years ago when Loronix was just beginning, featuring Elza Soares and Miltinho in their first out of three albums titled “Elza Miltinho e Samba” with the duo performing together a repertoire of Sambas organized on medleys and individual tracks.

I remembered this album when I saw the streets of Rio de Janeiro with several posters announcing a concert with Elza Soares and her new experience with Seu Jorge’s Farofa Carioca group. It has been more than 40 years since Elza and Miltinho recorded this album and it is really fantastic to know they are alive and kicking today. Let’s see.

This is Elza Soares & Miltinho – Elza, Miltinho e Samba (1967), for Odeon, featuring arrangements by Maestro Orlando Silveira supported by Maestro Nelsinho and Lyrio Panicalli. Musicians in this session were not credited by Odeon, even when it was included on Elza Soares box set released by EMI Odeon in 2003. Tracks include:

01 – Com Que Roupa (Noel Rosa) Se Você Jurar (Ismael Silva / Nilton Bastos / Francisco Alves)
02 – Beijo na Boca (Ciro de Souza / Augusto Garcez) Requebre Que Eu Dou Um Doce (Dorival Caymmi) Tem Que Ter (Túlio Piva)
03 – Boogie-woogie na Favela (Denis Brean) Bonitão (Marino Pinto / Mário Rossi) Eu Quero Um Samba (Haroldo Barbosa / Janet de Almeida) Pourquoi (Essa Nega Sem Sandália) (Caco Velho / Jadir de Castro)
04 – Se Você Visse (Horondino Silva “Dino” / Del Loro) featuring MILTINHO
05 – Todo Dia É Dia (Zuzuca / Benedito Reis) featuring ELZA SOARES
06 – Enlouqueci (Luis Soberano / Waldomiro Pereira / João Sales) Fica Doido Varrido (Eratóstenes Frazão / Benedito Lacerda) Obsessão (Mirabeau / Milton de Oliveira) Só Eu Sei (Henrique de Almeida / Nelson Trigueiro / Milton de Oliveira) É Bom Parar (Rubens Soares) Calado Venci (Ataulfo Alves / Herivelto Martins) Vai Que Depois Eu Vou (Zé da Zilda / Airton Borges / Adolfo Macedo) Já Vai (Rubens Campos / Duba)

Elza Soares - Elza Soares (1974)

Hello, good evening! In the very first beginning of Loronix, someone credited Elza Soares albums as the perfect and natural heal to depression and day saver when you woke up in the morning with no energy for a day. I’ve been hearing this one at least once a day in the last week and now I understand our friend’s analogy. This album has a very good energy and it is the first time we are making available at Loronix. Let’s see.

This is Elza Soares – Elza Soares (1974), for Tapecar, Elza’s first album at the tiny Tapecar label, the first after the termination of her contract with Odeon, her record company since the beginning where Elza could record 17 albums across the whole 60’s decade and part of the 70s. Musicians in this session were not credited by Tapecar, with the exception of Ed Lincoln, delivering truly awesome samba arrangements throughout the whole session. Tracks include:

01 – Bom Dia Portela (David Correia / Bebeto di São João)
02 – Pranto Livre (Dida / Everaldo da Viola)
03 – Não É Hora de Tristeza (Lino Roberto / Wilson Medeiros / Walter da Imperatriz)
04 – Meia-noite Já É Dia (Norival Reis / David Correia)
05 – Desabafo (Tatu / Nezinho / Campo)
06 – Partido do Lê Lê Lê (Otilo Gomes)
07 – Deusa do Rio Niger (Walter Norambê / Motorzinho)
08 – Quem Há de Dizer (Lupicínio Rodrigues / Alcides Gonçalves)
09 – Louvei Maria (Elza Soares)
10 – Xamêgo de Crioula (Zé Di)
11 – Falso Papel (Dário Marciano)
12 – Giringonça (Josealdo Fraga)

.

Elza Soares - Elza Soares (1973)

Hello, good evening! One of my dreams is to access the Internet at a reasonable speed through a mobile phone. Just to support some quick decisions I have to make when I’m not home, such like this one I will tell you. I found this album today at Copacabana by one of those prices that nobody believes. All I had with me was this fantastic cover, very similar, actually, the same cover used by EMI Odeon on a Elza Soares box set released in 2003.

A complimentary information was the release year, 1973. I had no choice besides taking R$ 3 Reais from my pocket and take it home, where I discovered this is an Elza Soares career album never released before at Loronix. I have this album, but never considered for Loronix because of this cover, showing Elza Soares a little frightening and dark, exactly the opposite of what we have right now with this Odeon Coronado reissue, where Elza is only joy and happiness. Let’s see.

This is Elza Soares – Aquarela Brasileira (1973), for Odeon, which is the last album recorded by Elza Soares at Odeon, her record company since the first album released in 1960. Musicians in this session were not credited by Odeon and I had little time to do a search and retrieve additional info. But who cares about that? This is Elza Soares, never released at Loronix. Tracks include:

01 – Aquarela Brasileira (Silas de Oliveira)
02 – Busto Calado (Rubens da Silva / Orlando Costa ”Maestro Cipó”)
03 – Pranto de Poeta (Nelson Cavaquinho / Guilherme de Brito)
04 – Dia de Graça (Candeia)
05 – Maria José (Fritz / Nereu Gargalo)
06 – Zelão (Sergio Ricardo)
07 – Canoa Furada (Gisa Nogueira)
08 – Solidão (Luis Roberto / Paulo Martini)
09 – Sete Linhas (Sidney da Conceição)
10 – Festa da Vinda (Cartola / Nuno Veloso)
11 – Lá Vou Eu (Delcio Carvalho)
12 – Eu Não Toco Berimbau (Serrinha / Mazola)

.

Este disco está disponível no Um que Tenha, fazendo parte do vol. 9 do Box Negra, em conjunto com o disco da Elza de 1974.

1985ElzaSoaresSomosTodosIguais

Hello, good evening! This is one of the most requested albums by Elza Soares since the beginning of Loronix. The reason is quite simple; approximately the whole Elza Soares discography was reissued on CD in 2002, covering all albums recorded by Elza Soares for Odeon between 1960 and 1988. Everything was released on a single box set featuring 12 CDs, containing 22 LPs. This stupid parrot did not get one, now out of print. Two albums were left outside this box set, Elza Negra Elza (1980), already available at Loronix and Somos Todos Iguais (1985), which is this one we will have the chance to know right now, a sought after album and perhaps the only Elza Soares career album never released on CD. Let’s see.

This is Elza Soares – Somos Todos Iguais (1985), for Som Livre. Little I know about this album, considered an above the average Elza Soares release. I read several things today about this record and several sources says that Caetano Veloso and Lobao are in charge of production, which is something that needs to be confirmed since they are not credited here, and Caetano Veloso only appears as special guest on track 09 – Sophisticated Lady (Duke Ellington). Musicians were not credited by Som Livre, except the arranger, Glaucus Xavier. Tracks include:

01 – Osso Pele e Pano (Jorge Aragão)
02 – Mais Uma Vez (Carlos Dafé / Lourenço)
03 – Da Fuga Fez Sua Verdade (Sombrinha / Sereno / Adilson)
04 – Cacatua (Ronaldo Barcellos)
05 – Daquele Amor Nem Me Fale (João Donato / Martinho da Vila)
06 – Heróis da Liberdade (Mano Décio da Viola / Silas de Oliveira)
07 – Somos Todos Iguais (Elza Soares)
08 – Antes do Sol (Ronaldo Barcellos / Pi)
09 – Sophisticated Lady (Duke Ellington / Vrs. Augusto de Campos) with Caetano Veloso
10 – Exagero (Elza Soares / Glaucus Xavier)
11 – Milagres (Cazuza / Roberto Frejat)

.

Elza Soares - Tapecar (1976)

Hello, good evening! This little record comes to announce that tomorrow we will have a full day devoted to the Samba in Loronix, which is the already legendary Samba Saturday with the first 2008 edition. If you were waiting anxiously for a Samba Saturday, you should say hello to zecalouro’s mother, who is now a frequent reader of Loronix posts through the new translation feature. She read something about the lack of Saturdays devoted to Samba and went on a successful mission to find albums in the style. I have to admit that I’m really surprised with her findings. You should not miss another Samba Saturday at Loronix. Meanwhile, Elza Soares should guide us to be in the mood for tomorrow. Let’s see.

This is Elza Soares – EP CD.73 (1976), for Tapecar, featuring Elza Soares performing four tracks, including the blockbuster Malandro, which is the sample made available at Loronix Preview Center. Tracks include:

01 – Estou Com Raiva De Você (Miro Barbosa / Jorge Roberto)
02 – Nó Na Tristeza (Vicente Matos / Carlito Cavalcanti)
03 – Malandro (Jorge Aragão / Jotabê)
04 – Curumbandê (Beto Baiano)

.

Como não está disponível em nenhum local, estamos disponibilizando provisoriamente na forma de um magnet link. OBS: não se esqueça de deixar semeando  depois que você terminar de baixar (uma boa razão seria pelo menos 2 vezes o que você baixar!)

Elza Soares is all about Loronix and I was really missing her. It has been four months since the last Elza Soares release, which is almost a century in terms of Elza Soares popularity among Loronixers. I was really amazed by this album including the back cover featuring Elza Soares husband, Garrincha, one of the greatest soccer players in history. I spent a great time today browsing Ruy Castro’s book on Garrincha, very well done with lots of information about Elza Soares. This album was recorded just before they split, after 15 years of marriage and has much of Elza Soares personal feelings of that time. Let’s see.

This is Elza Soares – Licao de Vida (1976), for Tapecar, the third out of four albums recorded for Tapecar after the end of Elza Soares golden years at Odeon. Licao de Vida has is arranged by Ed Lincoln and Paulo Moura with musical direction by Ed Lincoln. Unfortunately, musicians in this session were not credited and could not be identified. I don’t want to keep you busy with my writing. Elza Soares is self-explanatory. And have a nice weekend with Licao de Vida. Tracks include:

01 – Malandro (Jorge Aragão / Jotabê)
02 – Cipriano (Sidney da Conceição / Romeo Nunes)
03 – Lição de Vida (Paulo de Capitólia)
04 – Pinta e Borda (Belizário / Di Ferraz)
05 – Rainha dos Sete Mares (Avarese / Lino Roberto / Alfredo Silva)
06 – A Rosa (Efson)
07 – Curumbandê (Beto Baiano)
08 – Nó na Tristeza (Vicente Matos / Carlito Cavalcanti)
09 – Deus e Viola (Neoci / Dida)
10 – Estou Com Raiva de Você (Miro Barbosa / Jorge Roberto)
11 – Samba Minha Raiz (Dona Ivone Lara / Delcio Carvalho)
12 – Sal e Pimenta (Nazareno de Brito / Newton Ramalho) Mulata Assanhada (Ataulfo Alves) Beija-me (Roberto Martins)

Elza Soares – O Samba e Elza Soares (1961)

Elza Soares is the guarantee of a great start of a new week. The albums she recorded in the early 60’s are all solid with no exception. Elza was backed by the best of breed in terms of arrangements and musicians (unfortunately, never credited by Odeon label), working in partnership with different Maestros, such as Nelsinho, Severino Araujo, Oswaldo Borba and others. This time, the legendary Astor Silva is in charge of the arrangements, which is a guarantee of very nice music.

This is Elza Soares – O Samba e Elza Soares (1961), for Odeon. Nice repertoire, very happy Elza Soares on cover artwork. No much to say about it, except the participation of Monsueto as special guest on three songs, Teleco Teco, Cantiga de Morro and Ziriguidum. Tracks include:

01 – Eu e o Rio (Luis Antônio)
02 – Vedete Certinha (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
03 – Teleco-teco (Marino Pinto / Murilo Caldas) with Monsueto
04 – Bom Mesmo É Estar de Bem (Silvio Silva / Romeo Nunes)
05 – Fez Bobagem (Assis Valente)
06 – Amor de Mentira (Hianto de Almeida / Édson Borges)
07 – Na Base do Bilhetinho (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
08 – Cantiga do Morro (Hianto de Almeida / Macedo Neto) with Monsueto
09 – Acho Que Sim (Tom Jobim / Billy Blanco)
10 – Ziriguidum (Monsueto) with Monsueto
11 – Vou Sonhar Pra Você Ver (Haroldo Lobo / Milton de Oliveira)
12 – Reconciliação (Waldemar Gomes / Marino Pinto)

.

Elza Soares – Um Show de Elza (1965)

14 05 2012

Link original: Elza Soares – Um Show de Elza (1965)
Publicado em: Tuesday, July 03, 2007 by zecalouro

Elza Soares released several albums in the 60’s, all for Odeon, starting in 1960 with her debut LP, Se Acaso Voce Chegasse, until her last Odeon release in 1973, a self-titled album with a picture of Elza Soares making a bored face, not so nice as this one. I think we have covered most of this glorious “Odeon phase”, but this one, Um Show de Elza, is perhaps one of the best albums of her Odeon phase, such like the acclaimed Com a Bola Branca that follows this release. Both albums have something in common, Maestro Nelsinho in charge of arrangements.

This is Elza Soares – Um Show de Elza (1965), for Odeon. Elza Soares and Nelsinho partnership delivers flawless results. Nelsinho understands Elza Soares, his arrangements blends with Elza rough voice, making a trombone and voice dual really unique. The repertoire selected needs also to be highlighted with Elza Soares mixing old songs from Lupscinio Rodrigues and Ary Barroso with fresh material delivered by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao Donato, including also a song written by the legendary Garrincha 06 – Pe Redondo, Elza’s husband at that time. Tracks include:

01 – Ocultei (Ary Barroso)
02 – Verão no Meu Rio (Carla Baroni / Carlito)
03 – Dindi (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
04 – Samba da Minha Terra (Dorival Caymmi)
05 – Ombro a Ombro (Lourenço Quintanilha / Izidro Quintanilha)
06 – Pé Redondo (Garrincha)
07 – Vingança (Lupicínio Rodrigues)
08 – Sambou Sambou (João Mello / João Donato)
09 – Porque e Para Que (Jaime Florence “Meira” / Fernando César)
10 – Neném (Luis Bandeira / Anselmo Mazzoni)
11 – Cais do Porto (Capiba)
12 – Se Acaso Você Chegasse (Lupicínio Rodrigues / Felisberto Martins)

.

If you close a day with Elza Soares you have a perfect day. It has been more than a year this album was first released at Loronix. It was a shame that he was not upgraded since than, now we have better cover scans, nice ripping and the missing track 07 – O Que Vem de Baixo nao me Atinge is now included. Actually, this album got much better with the correct track 07, it is the best album track. Let’s see.

This is Elza Soares e Roberto Ribeiro – Sangue, Suor e Raca (1972), for Odeon. This album immediately follows the acclaimed O Samba pede Passagem, released earlier in the same year of 1972. Sangue, Suor e Raca, upgrades the previous one, Elza is funkier and the great Roberto Ribeiro really adds something special to the album with soul vocals and nice duets with Elza. Dom Salvador and Maestro Nelsinho are in charge of arrangements, but personnel listing is not available this time. Tracks include:

01 – Swing Negrão (Elza Soares) Brasil Pandeiro (Assis Valente) O Samba Agora Vai (Pedro Caetano) É Com Esse Que Eu Vou (Pedro Caetano)
02 – Aurora de Um Sambista (Toco)
03 – Domingos Domingueira (Eduardo Marques (1))
04 – Cicatrizes (Miltinho / Paulo César Pinheiro)
05 – Isto É Papel João (Paulo Ruschell) Cocorocó (Paulo da Portela) Decadência (Cartola)
06 – Recordação de Um Batuqueiro (Xangô da Mangueira / J. Gomes) O Que Vem de Baixo Não Me Atinge (Johnny Alf)
08 – Lenço Cor de Rosa (Eduardo Marques (1))
09 – Sacrifício (Mauro Duarte / Maurício Tapajós)
10 – Coisa Louca (Ismael Silva) A Razão Dá-se a Quem Tem (Noel Rosa / Francisco Alves / Ismael Silva) O Que Se Leva Desta Vida (Pedro Caetano)

.

Este disco pode ser buscado no Um que tenha, onde ele aparece como parte do volume 8 da caixa Negra. O outro disco do volume é  “Pede Passagem“,  que foi publicado anteriormente aqui nos Órfãos. Hello, Good Evening! Loronix Music from All Countries was very good. I hope there is someone to read this lines. It seems that everybody is locked at home hearing the great music we had in this four-day celebration. We are always open to ideas and any kind of feedback to adjustments and new improvements. Tell us if you have a new event idea or any existent feature that you see an opportunity to improve. I can’t stop thinking about our next event.

I’m bored today. An essential piece of hardware at Loronix has broken today and I cannot replace it with an equivalent. My Honeywell Super Turbo High Performance Fan – HWL-HT800 stopped working after 7 years cooling my office and IT equipment. Honeywell is not in Brazil, so I cannot replace with another and even fix the existent since the plastic cabinet is sealed. I will ask a special favor to Loronixers, this Turbo High Performance Fan is sold by US$ 15,00 in average on every good on-line store I could check today. I pay the cost and transportation expenses if someone can make it. I will be truly grateful for the forthcoming 7 years.

This is Elza Soares & Miltinho – Elza, Miltinho e Samba Vol. 3(1969), for Odeon. You know that Saturday we start the day with Samba and we can’t go wrong with Samba performed by this legendary duo, Elza Soares and Miltinho. This is the third out of three albums they made together for Odeon and we are closing this series, Volumes 1 and 2 are already available at Loronix. Tracks include:

01 – Medlley 1 | Juntinhos de Novo (Nelsinho) Não Manche o Meu Panamá (Alcebíades Nogueira) O Sorriso do Paulinho (Gastão Viana / Mário Rossi) Oito Mulheres (José Batista) Embrulho Que Eu Carrego (Djalma Mafra / Alvaiade) Despacho (Ary Barroso)
02 – Medlley 2 | Saia do Meu Caminho (Custódio Mesquita / Evaldo Ruy) Nervos de Aço (Lupicínio Rodrigues) Por Causa de Você (Tom Jobim / Dolores Duran)

I’m in the mood of Samba with the end of our Survey. I’m now addicted to surveys and promotions and it is now time to start thinking about the next one, if you have an idea, just write me, we need good ideas. Let’s celebrate the possible winner with Samba and Samba = Elza Soares.

This is Elza Soares – Nos Bracos do Samba (1975), for Tapecar, a mid-70’s Elza Soares album featuring Ed Lincoln playing several roles, arranger in all tracks, production and musical direction. I learned with this album that Ed Lincoln has also collaborated with Elza Soares on other two mid 70’s releases. There is no need to write much, it is Saturday a traditional Samba day at Loronix and Elza is always self-explanatory. Take a special attention on a very beautiful insert at the size of a LP with lyrics. Tracks include:

01 – Primeiro Eu (Toninho Nascimento / Romildo)
02 – Nem Vem (Noel Rosa de Oliveira / Duduca / José Alves)
03 – Viagem de Jangada (Tião da Roça / Antônio Andrade)
04 – Quem É Bom Já Nasce Feito (Lino Roberto / Wilson Medeiros)
05 – Debruçado Em Meu Olhar (Toninho Nascimento / Romildo)
06 – Confesso Que Chorei (João Fonseca / Albano Silva)
07 – Lendas e Festas das Yabás (Aroldo Melodia / Leôncio da Silva)
08 – Nos Braços do Samba (Neoci / Dida)
09 – Auera (Marcos Moran / E. Carlos)
10 – Saudade Minha Inimiga (Nelson Cavaquinho / Guilherme de Brito)
11 – Deixa Pra Deus Resolver (Gilson de Souza)
12 – Cansada de Esperar (Ciro Vagareza / Sidney da Conceição)

Elza Soares – Elza Pede Passagem (1972)

Publicado em: Friday, April 13, 2007 by zecalouro

Tomorrow is Friday and for those who are reading this post before going to work don’t skip it, this album will make you drive until work alive and kicking. If you miss it, don’t worry and make it on Monday. This is the kind of music that saves a day and Loronix has been in fault with Elza Soares, the last time she had an album at Loronix was last year, December 1st.

This is Elza Soares – Elza Pede Passagem (1972), for Odeon. I could not check the reason why this album was not a commercial success by its release time, Elza Pede Passagem is very representative and one of the best albums recorded by Elza Soares in the 70’s, being also considered a classic samba-soul record. A big orchestra having the legendary Dom Salvador in charge of arrangements in all tracks accompanies Elza. Personnel is not listed. Friends, what a wonderful record. I was decided to keep Flicts as the last post for several reasons, but when I was just getting ready to rest, hear some music and plan tomorrows posts, I took this LP for a listen and I could not resist to be back and present Elza Soares – Com a Bola Branca (1966), for Odeon.

It has been a very long time since the last Elza Soares release at Loronix, but now she is back to the spotlight on a great style. This LP is arranged by Nelsinho do Trombone that makes a nice brass duel with Elza’s harsh voice in all tracks. Since I could not make any research on this LP, I will be straightforward. Tracks include:

01 – Quizumba (Serrinha)
02 – Estatuto de Gafieira (Billy Blanco)
03 – Nem Vem Nem Vai (Sinval Silva)
04 – No Carnaval (Mendes)
05 – Jogado Fora (João Mello)
06 – A Vida Como Ela É (Julio Dias de Castro)
07 – A Infelicidade (Mauro Duarte / Niltinho)
08 – Deixa a Nega Gingar (Luis Cláudio)
09 – Brincadeira Tem Hora (Mário Castro Neves / Chico Feitosa)
10 – Volta Pro Morro (Manoel Ferreira / Célio Cyrino)
11 – Meu Tudo e Porque (Carlito / Romeo Nunes)
12 – Tudo É Balanço (Niquinho / Nilton Pereira)

Elza Soares – A Bossa Negra (1961)

Publicado em: SATURDAY, JUNE 24, 2006

zecalouro apologizes for posting two Elza Soares very close of each other in a row. The last Elza with Wilson das Neves were so celebrated that zecalouro could not resist to post his Elza favorite.

This is Elza Soares second caeer album, Bossa Negra 1961. Elza gives here a good combination of Samba with American music. The repetoire is composed by songs from the 40’s and 50’s, Astor Silva is in charge of the arrangements, giving the album an orchestration atmosphere from the 50’s that matches very properly with the unique Elza’s voice.

Five out of Five stars record, presented by zecalouro.

What we have here? Swing, Groovy, Balanço, Samba… all these words fits on an album that will make you dance around the house. Amazing drummer Wilson Das Neves is backing up Elza on her 1968 Elza Soares e o Baterista Wilson das Neves.

The cover is also very beautiful. You will find some Bossa Nova standards here; all sung by the distinctive, harsh voice that is Elza trademark. She is surely one of the most swing samba singer Brazil has ever made.

Friday is coming. Get the chance. Stay with light Bossa of Astrud Gilberto – just a post below – or hit the ceiling with the swinging Elza…

Elza Soares – Sambossa (1963)

Publicado em: Wednesday, August 02, 2006 by zecalouro

It is time to Elza Soares and her 3rd career LP, Sambossa, Odeon (1963). Sambossa is one of Elza Soares essentials, recorded just before Elza left Europe and got married with the legendary soccer player Garrincha. During this time, Elza also presented together with Louis Armstrong, which was a landmark on her career.

Sambossa is Elza’s transitioning from Samba to Bossa Nova. A nice performance of Dorival Caymmi Rosa Morena opens the LP, Billy Blanco gives to others compositions and there is also another classic, So Danco Samba, Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes. Ribamar is in charge of the arrangements, making a set that fits nicely with Elza harsh voice and scats.

Elza Soares – Se Acaso Você Chegasse (1960)

Se Acaso Você Chegasse (If All of a Sudden You Arrive), 1960 is Elza Soares debut LP, nationwide acclaimed at that time with the song that gives the LP title playing all around the country.

The early 60’s was a challenge for many artists, since Brazilian popular music was transitioning between the old radio singer style and the brand new and modern Bossa Nova. Elza Soares was clever, she make her singing with both elements, capturing both audiences.

Owner of a distinctive, harsh voice (even if considering the conspicuous Armstrong mannerisms), Elza Soares is one of the most swinging samba singers. Having appeared in 1959 with the samba “Se Acaso Você Chegasse,” Soares always had her artistic career complicated by her personal life, which certainly impeded her of enjoying a more widespread popularity. Having gotten married at 12 and having lost three children who died of hunger, she later became the wife of Garrincha, one of the most genial soccer players ever, and also a chronic alcoholic. The peak of her career was in the ’60s, with albums like O Máximo em Samba (1967), Elza Soares & Wilson das Neves (1968), Elza, Miltinho e Samba (a three-album series shared with Miltinho). In that decade she had several hits like “Boato,” “Edmundo” (a version of “In the Mood”), “Beija-me,” “Devagar Com a Louça,” “Mulata Assanhada,” “O Mundo Encantado de Monteiro Lobato,” “Bahia de Todos os Deuses,” “Palmas no Portão,” and “Palhaçada.” In the ’70s, she still had success with “Salve a Mocidade” (1974), and “Malandro” (1977, this song launched Jorge Aragão as a composer). But it wasn’t enough to prevent her from facing huge economical adversities and at the same time, she was being systematically turned away by recording companies. With Garrincha, Soares had a very troubled marriage and the untimely demise of their son Garrinchinha in 1986 in a car accident didn’t help her in any way.

Trying unsuccessfully to develop a career abroad, she returned to Brazil in 1994, poor and depressed. Finally, she was rediscovered in the ’80s by the younger generations of Brazilian rockers (Os Titãs, Lobão) and MPB artists like Caetano Veloso, having been awarded with a Sharp Prize award as the Best Samba Singer of 1997. Her life was depicted in the musical Crioula, which had several songs written specially for her by Chico Buarque, Chico César, Nei Lopes, and others. In 2000, she was appointed Singer of the Millennium by London’s BBC. Soares continues to challenge her destiny, performing shows in every venue available. Living in extreme poverty throughout her childhood and teens, Elza Soares had her first audition in radio at Ary Barroso’s novice show when she was 16, winning first place. She was then hired as a crooner by the Orquestra Garam de Bailes (led by conductor Joaquim Naegli). She worked in the orchestra until 1954, when she became pregnant. In 1955, she was invited to star together with Grande Otelo in the play Jour-Jou-Fru-Fru, which was a smash. Three years later, Soares toured Argentina, returning in the next year when she was hired by Rádio Vera Cruz. Also in 1959, she recorded a 78 rpm with “Se Acaso Você Chegasse” (Lupício Rodrigues/Felisberto Martins), one of her biggest hits. In 1960, she went to São Paulo where she performed regularly in the show I Festival Nacional de Bossa Nova and recorded her first LP, Se Acaso Você Chegasse. In 1962, she represented Brazil in Chile during the World Soccer Cup, where she met Garrincha. Having recorded several albums with the hits “Só Danço Samba” (Tom Jobim/Vinícius de Moraes), “A Banca do Distinto” (Billy Blanco), “Pressentimento” (Elton Medeiros/Hermínio Bello de Carvalho), and “Princesa Isabel” (Sérgio Ricardo), she moved to Italy in 1969, where she performed at the Sistina theater (Rome), returning to Brazil in 1972. In the same year, she opened the show Elza Em Dia de Graça at the Opinião theater (Rio) and participated in the Brasil Export Show (Canecão). Rediscovered in the ’80s as a cult heroine by the Os Titãs, she performed with the band in a regular show at the Madame Satã nightclub. Soares also recorded in duet with Caetano Veloso on his album Velô and with Lobão on Casa de Samba. With her Trajetória (1997), in which she was paid tribute by Zeca Pagodinho, she won the Prêmio Sharp Award as Best Samba Singer. In November 1999, Soares participated in the show Desde Que o Samba é Samba (at Royal Albert Hall, London, England), together with Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, and Virgínia Rodrigues. In 2000, her life was depicted in the musical Crioula (Stella Miranda). ~ Alvaro Neder, All Music Guide

Elza Soares – Carnaval & Samba (1969)

Elza Soares – Carnaval & Samba (1969) is an unique LP from Elenco, where Elza sings sambas enredos. Some clarification is needed here, Samba-Enredo is the music choosen by each Escola de Samba – Samba School – in Brazilian Carnaval to suport the Carnaval parade. Each Escola de Samba has a different song each year.

Carnaval & Samba is a collection of several Sambas-Enredos. zecalouro thinks he is delivering an unique experience for those who never came to Brazil at Carnaval time. Believe me. This is one of the best posts so far. zecalouro is right now listening to this album and his heart is beating at 140, at least. Beautiful LP.

Amazing cover. Elza is dressing a Bahiana costume, very common in Bahia.

Este disco é a segunda parte do volume 6 do box “Negra” da Elza Soares, publicado no Um que Tenha.
