It is always great to show an album recorded by this great Brazilian singer. It is also amazing how people get surprised when take Luiz Claudio for a first hearing. In spite of being an acclaimed singer in the 60’s, Luiz Claudio is almost unknown today, even some friends have a good knowledge of the music from Brazil — I’m talking about respectful people here — never had the chance to hear Luiz Claudio and they use to write enthusiastic emails with many thanks for revealing Luiz Claudio. Their albums are not easy to find and I think this one will take everybody by surprise, except the bossanovadreamer, I sent this one to him last year. Let’s see.

This is Luiz Claudio – O Romantico Luiz Claudio (1961), for RCA Victor. Little I know about this album and I could not find a single reference when searching e-bay, popsike and Gemm. The back cover brings only track listing with lyrics with no credits to arrangers and musicians in this set. Tracks include:

02 – Foi Num Trem (Luis Cláudio de Castro / Nazareno de Brito)

Publicado em: Saturday, August 04, 2007 by zecalouro

I’m in the mood today for showing this album that I have been saving for months, actually, there is something that I confirmed today that makes this post really necessary, the participation of Luiza, the same Luiza from the 1964 self titled album with arrangements by Moacir Santos. Let’s see what we have here, this album is really unique and shows another side of this great singer.

This is Luiz Claudio – Cantigas (1973), for Odeon. Luiz Claudio has strong connections with Minas Gerais, the state he was born. He started his professional career in 1949 with the group Trovadores do Luar, adopting Bossa Nova style in the 60’s and then getting back to his “roots” in the 70’s with a series of albums dedicated to Minas Gerais regional music. Cantigas is an example, bringing very old traditional songs from Minas Gerais adapted by Luiz Claudio among well-known Brazilian standards by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Luiz Bonfa, among others. Luiza sings track 01 – Amo Te Muito. Tracks include:

01 – Amo-te Muito (Joao Chaves) Featuring Luiza
02 – Mucama (Goncalves Crespo)
03 – Cantigas (Arranjo e Adaptacao Luiz Claudio)
04 – E a Ti Flor do Ceu (Arranjo e Adaptacao Luiz Claudio)
05 – Sereno da Madrugada (Adaptacao Ubirajara Cabral)
06 – Menina das Trancas (Luiz Claudio / William Prado)
07 – Estrada Branca (Antonio Carlos Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
08 – Elvira Escuta (Arranjo e Adaptacao Luiz Claudio)
09 – O Galo Cantou na Serra (Luiz Claudio / Guimaraes Rosa)
10 – Gaviao de Penacho (Arranjo e Adaptacao Luiz Claudio) Featuring Malu
11 – Correnteza (Antonio Carlos Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)

Here we go on an album that is filed since the very first beginning waiting for a chance to be presented to Loronixers. During all this time, it was sent as a contribution from Mr. X and now the legendary bossanovadreamer – by the way, a very big fan of this artist – sent it again to our appreciation. That’s why I cannot keep waiting longer, since bossanovadreamer dedicates this album with great enthusiasm to zecalouro, Caetano Rodrigues and worldwide community of Loronixers.

This is Luiz Claudio – Intimidade (1968), for Odeon. If you get the chance to listen to a earlier Luiz Claudio release – Luiz Claudio – Entre Nos (1966), for Musidisc – which is a post that makes me feel very proud with the comment wrote by Ed Motta, do not hesitate to give a chance to Intimidade, directed by Maestro Lyrio Panicalli and arranged by Antonio Adolfo, with two exceptions, as indicated on track list. Quinteto Villa-Lobos is special guest on tracks 01 = No Brilho da Faca and 12 – Asa Branca. Tracks include:

01 – No Brilho da Faca (Wagner Tiso / Paulo Sergio Valle)
02 – Pilão (Luis Cláudio de Castro) (PM)
03 – Alegria de Carnaval (Antônio Adolfo / Tibério Gaspar)
04 – Sá Marina (Antônio Adolfo / Tibério Gaspar)
05 – Aperto de Mão (Horondino Silva “Dino” / Jaime Florence “Meira” / Augusto Mesquita)
06 – Viola Enluarada (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
07 – Maria (Francis Hime / Vinicius de Moraes) (FH)
08 – Atire a Primeira Pedra (Ataulfo Alves / Mário Lago)
09 – Retrato Em Branco e Preto (Tom Jobim / Chico Buarque)
10 – Meu Lugar (Luis Fernando Werneck / Danilo Caymmi / Fernando Brant)
11 – Rosa Maria (Eden Silva / Aníbal Silva)
12 – Asa Branca (Humberto Teixeira / Luis Gonzaga)

(PM) Arrangements, Paulo Moura
(FH) Arrangements, Francis Hime

Luis Claudio – Entre Nos (1966)

Publicado em: SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2006

Luis Claudio is a Brazilian singer and composer with a solid contribution to Brazilian music since the late 50’s, a really controversial artist, identified with Bossa Nova in the 60’s. In the 70’s Luis Claudio changed his work approaching regional music, mainly from the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, which is the state where he was born.I have some Luis Claudio recordings from the 70’s and I can tell you that he made a big turn, recording albums with viola and lyrics based on Minas Gerais folklore. Among several Luis Claudio releases, this is the one I like most, Luis Claudio – Entre Nos (1966) for Musidisc. Unfortunately, I could not find linear notes for this LP, which is almost a Bossa Nova standard that you should not miss. Tracks include:

01 – Tenha Pena de Mim (Babaú / Ciro de Souza)
02 – Coisa Nº 10 (Moacir Santos) – Vocalise
03 – Razão (Alberto Arantes / Sergio Bittencourt)
04 – Ouro Preto (Luis Cláudio de Castro)
05 – Olê Olá (Chico Buarque)
06 – Simplesmente (Baden Powell / Luis Fernando Freire)
07 – Amélia (Ataulfo Alves / Mário Lago)
08 – Nós (Candinho / Luis Fernando Freire)
09 – Cidade do Interior (Marino Pinto / Mário Rossi)
10 – Poeira da Saudade (Luis Cláudio de Castro)
11 – Labareda (Durval Ferreira)

This 1956 LP is from Luiz Claudio solo career in Rio de Janeiro. Luiz Claudio came to Rio with a contract signed with Mayrink Veiga Radio and established a solid reputation as singer and also composer. Let’s see how Luiz Claudio performs at Loronix, after 50 years before this LP release. Tracks include:

01 – Como e Bom Dancar
02 – Fui num Trem
03 – Saudade Chegando
04 – Os Pobres de Paris
05 – Historia de um Amor
06 – Mademoiselle de Paris
07 – Joga a Rede no Mar
08 – Nao Morro sem Ver Paris

Another Loronix release with the help of Refer, which is becoming the ultimate authority of the forgotten music from the 50’s and 60’s. Thanks Refer, one more in a row and more to come.
