Maysa - Maysa (1974)

Here we go with an extraordinary launch-time album, supposed to be released yesterday, but delayed by last minute technical problems. This is Maysa last career album, released by Evento, an Odeon subsidiary in charge of the mighty Aloysio de Oliveira. The label Evento – by the way very similar to the legendary “Elenco” – had a short life launching only 6 records, three compilations and three unpublished albums, this last Maysa Mattarazzo LP, Billy Blanco and his Paulistana – Um Retrato de uma Cidade symphony and the mega rare collaboration between Oscar Castro Neves and Lee Ritenour – Um Encontro. Let’s see.

This is Maysa – Maysa (1974), for Evento, courtesy of the great JOAO-SP. This is the third Evento album released at Loronix and they have the same cover artwork concept by Cesar G. Villela, which is great, but makes them looks the same each other. In the other hand, Aloysio de Oliveira delivers lots of information inside about the recording session, including the participation of Oscar Castro Neves as arranger (perhaps delivering piano and violao playing) and orchestra arrangements from Lindolpho Gaya. Unfortunately, Aloysio de Oliveira did not credit musicians in the session. The whole story is available in the panorama picture bellow, also included in a high-res scan inside the music. Thanks once again JOAO-SP for another great contribution.

Maysa - Ando So Numa Multidao de Amores (1970)

The first thing I want to say is THANKS JOAO-SP for providing us such great contributions. JOAO-SP sent us more than 30 LPs; they are all new to our community, such as this beauty recorded by Maysa, one of the greatest Brazilian divas, not released at Loronix since May 2007. I had also some difficulty to realize this album was not a book, a Maysa biography written by Lira Neto last year. I cannot remember this album being released on CD and I cannot understand why it was not released together with the book, since both shares the same title. Let’s see.

This is Maysa – Ando So Numa Multidao de Amores (1971), for Philips. Little I know about this album, except it is produced and directed by Roberto Menescal and arranged by Luiz Eca and Roberto Menescal. I think Luiz Eca also delivers piano playing to Maysa, perhaps our great friend Thiago Mello from Bossa Brasileira, who knows everything about Maysa, can add something on top of my text. I think we will be on great company with Maysa. I wish to send a great Carnaval Monday to friends from Brazil and a great week start to everybody. Tracks include:

01 – Molambo (Jaime Florence “Meira” / Augusto Mesquita)
02 – Yo Sin Ti (Arturo Castro)
03 – Me Deixe Só (Roberto Menescal / Maysa)
04 – Chuvas de Verão (Fernando Lobo)
05 – Três Lágrimas (Ary Barroso)
06 – Assim na Terra Como no Céu (Roberto Menescal / Nonato Buzar / Paulinho Tapajós)
07 – Eu (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
08 – Suas Mãos (Pernambuco / Antônio Maria)
09 – Bonita (Tom Jobim / Ray Gilbert)
10 – Resposta (Maysa)
11 – Que Eu Canse e Descanse (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
12 – As Praias Desertas (Tom Jobim)
13 – Quando Chegares (Carlos Lyra)

I never gave the deserved attention to this album and I decided to give it a spin tonight. The first track worth the admission price. Perhaps the last time I heard Maysa was months ago, when her voice spread over the house I started feeling great and the tracks with Maysa, Tito Madi, Maysa, Tito Madi, etc. makes it very nice to hear. I don’t have idea if these tracks were released before on regular albums, but I’m sure RCA made a great repertoire selection. Let’s see.

This is Maysa & Tito Madi – Dois Na Fossa (1975), for RCA Candem. There are some very good tracks on Dois na Fossa. Fantasia de Trombones and Fantasia de Cellos are performed by Maysa and each one brings three songs. They are great. Tito Madi performs some tunes of the almost impossible to find Tito Madi – Tito Madi em Nova Dimensao (1968), they are: Helena, Helena, Helena, Franqueza, A Mesma Historia Antiga, Sem Ter Que Chorar and others. Tracks include:

01 – “Fantasia de Trombones” Demais / Meu Mundo Caiu / Preciso Aprender a Ser Só – Maysa
02 – Helena Helena Helena – Tito Madi
03 – Ne Me Quitte Pas – Maysa
04 – A Mesma História Antiga – Tito Madi
05 – Canção Sem Título – Maysa
06 – Sem Ter Que Chorar – Tito Madi
07 – “Fantasia de Cellos” Primavera / Eurídice / Canção do Amanhecer – Maysa

Let me first thanks Carl Ole for keeping updated his excellent Balaio do Carl, one of the best websites devoted to pop culture and music from Brazil in the 70’s and 80’s. You can watch this video here and then make a never-ending tour at Balaio do Carl, which is the place where this video was taken. This is Maysa and Rildo Hora performing together in 1975, Rede Globo de Televisao. Thanks Carl, I hope Loronixers enjoy this video and I’m sure they will enjoy Balaio do Carl, here.

Hope uEnjoy!

Hello, Good Evening! The awaited confirmation codes were sent to Loronixers who made the Survey from the start to the end. Thanks everybody. Now it is time to wait for the Lottery date, which is next Saturday, 5. Once again I made a mistake on both texts, the English text says the Loterry date would be May 7, instead of 5. Sorry about that. The Lottery will run according with the rules already established. I will make reinforcement on that announcement later for everybody.

I’m tired of sending emails today and I want to start very easy with Maysa, a Brazilian diva of 10 among 10 Loronixers.

This is Maysa – Maysa e Maysa… E Maysa… E Maysa (1959), for RGE, the release date is correct, 1959 and this is the sixth Maysa album for RGE. Different from her first 10-inch released at 1956 only with Maysa compositions; this album does not bring a single song of her. Anyway, Maysa is a great interpreter that still fascinating many people in Brazil even after 30 years since she has unfortunately passed away. Personnel is not credited. Tracks include:

01 – Só Deus (Jair Amorim / Evaldo Gouveia)
02 – O Que É Que Falta (Daisy Amaral)
03 – A Felicidade (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
04 – Hino ao Amor (Hymne à L’amour) (Marguerite Monnot / Edith Piaf / Vrs. Odair Marsano)
05 – E Daí (Miguel Gustavo)
06 – Manhã de Carnaval (Luis Bonfá / Antônio Maria)
07 – Viver Em Paz (Dalton Vogeler)
08 – Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
09 – A Noite de Nós Dois (Fernando César / Otello Zuccolo)

Hello! Good Night! I want to make a nice start today, celebrating the sunny day we had today in Rio de Janeiro. Besides music and birds, I have another hobby that I could not give any attention in the last months, bike riding. Today I decided to change this situation; I took my old and solid recumbent bike (that crazy Zohrer 20 at the picture) and made a ride from Leme to Leblon, round trip.

In the past, it was pretty easy to ride until the top of Corcovado as piece of cake, but today, this tiny 25 Km ride was inside, I felt my heart going out of my body. I think that I need to make more exercises. Bike riding is pure fan and I hope to ride together with any Loronixer who challenges me when in Rio. Give me only two months for putting back my body at a good shape.

By the way, this is a nice photo with Carlos Drummond de Andrade statue in Copacabana holding my recumbent.

This is Maysa – O Barquinho (1961), for Columbia, featuring O Conjunto de Roberto Menescal, which is Bebeto, Luis Carlos e Helcio Milito, with arrangements by Luiz Eca and Roberto Menescal, a mandatory repost, since this album has gone out of print and it is a mandatory piece on any Bossa Nova collector shelf. Tracks include:

01 – Barquinho (Ronaldo Bôscoli / Roberto Menescal)
02 – Você e Eu (Carlos Lyra / Vinicius de Moraes)
03 – Dois Meninos (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
04 – Recado à Solidão (Chico Feitosa)
05 – Depois do Amor (Normando / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
06 – Só Você (Mais Nada) (Paulo Soledade)
07 – Maysa (Luis Eça / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
08 – Errinho à Toa (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
09 – Lágrima Primeira (Ronaldo Bôscoli / Roberto Menescal)
10 – Eu e o Meu Coração (Inaldo Vilarim / Antônio Botelho)
11 – Cala Meu Amor (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
12 – Melancolia (Luis Eça / Ronaldo Bôscoli)

Remember that video with zecalouro showing Caetano Rodrigues Bossa Nova e Outras Bossas book? Do not miss it. The Maysa friends who watch the video – probably many by the emails received – are asking for the LP used by zecalouro to illustrate the size of Caetano’s book. It was wise of them to pay a careful attention on that video. Anyway, here it is, the Maysa LP used on that amateur video.

This is Maysa – Os Grandes Sucessos de Maysa (1959), for RGE, a compilation with songs selected from four records released by Maysa, Convite para Ouvir Maysa (1956), Maysa (1957), Convite para Ouvir Maysa Nr. 2 (1958) and Convite para Ouvir Maysa Nr. 3 (1958). These LPs are the four initial Maysa records, an amazing selection that should please Maysa fans and those ones who want to get along with Maysa first years. Tracks include:

03 – Por Causa de Você (3)
04 – Adeus (1)
05 – No Meio da Noite (3)

I’m very proud of the great community that was created around Loronix, it is fantastic to see the information and knowledge being exchanged on every part of our website, comments, Forum, CBox, etc. I’m sure that I could not make it without the help and contributions of everybody; Loronixers are great and I take seriously the responsibilities I have to keep it running, making the best with my personal effort and resources available. Thanks a lot for being here daily with us.Unfortunately, there are some limitations; I have a problem with special dates. Without the help of Loronixers we would never had the chance to celebrate several events in January, such as Elis Regina and now, Maysa. This post is a tribute to 30 years of Maysa’s passing. Thanks Caetano Rodrigues, actually, thanks Caetano’s wife, Lieze. She told us about this date, all credits should be given to Caetano and Lieze. This is Maysa – Canecao Apresenta Maysa (1969), for Copacabana, selected by Caetano Rodrigues for Loronix tribute to Maysa, a live performance at the legendary Canecao nightclub in Rio de Janeiro. I’m also making available a Maysa’s documentary produced by Globonews with several images of Maysa, probably unknown to many Loronixers. Tracks include:01 – Demais (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira) — Meu Mundo Caiu (Maysa) — Preciso Aprender a Ser Só (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
02 – Pra Quem Não Quizer Ouvir Meu Canto (César Roldão Vieira)
03 – Por Causa de Você (Tom Jobim / Dolores Duran) — Dindi (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)

05 – Ne Me Quitte Pas (J. Brel)
06 – Light My Fire (Morrison / Manzarek / Krieger / Densmore)

The last post with the French singer Sacha was wonderful, and also useful bringing to us a wonderful blog by the Loronixer PELEON with some interesting records, such as Sacha Distel singing in Spanish and a never seen Maysa EP. I invite you to make a try at PELEON website (http://rincon45.blogspot.com).

It was there that I could remember a Brazilian diva not released at Loronix for a long time. This Diva is Maysa with Maysa – Maysa Canta Sucessos (1960), for RGE. Very nice early Maysa LP with Orquestra RGE conduced by Maestro Simonetti, also in charge of arrangements. Pretty self-explanatory, we cannot go wrong with Maysa, Orquestra RGE and Maestro Simonetti together. Tracks include:

01 – Ri (Luis Antônio)
02 – Noite Chuvosa (João Leal Brito “britinho” / Fernando César)
03 – O Amor e a Rosa (Pernambuco / Antônio Maria)

Welcome back to Loronix, Maysa, now with her 1964 Self titled Elenco LP. The set is a live one, probably on a very small nightclub – you can hear no more than a dozen pair of hands clapping – with a nice recording quality for the time.

Eumir Deodato backs up Maysa with wonderful Bossa arrangements that make an interesting blend with Maysa interpretation.Straight to the point, zecalouro invites you to this live Maysa performance with Eumir Deodato combo.

Maysa – Maysa Sings Songs Before Dawn (1960)

Publicado em: Saturday, July 08, 2006 by zecalouro

Maysa, singer, a great Brazilian Diva from the 60’s and 70’s, makes a Loronix Debut with the album Maysa Sings Songs Before Dawn (1960).

This LP was released in US and Argentina only, being almost unknown in Brazil, this is a piece soared by collectors and fans. Maysa had a great success and recognition just before the Bossa Nova period. She is also a composer and developed her artistic career using a sentimental singing known as Fossa, a sort of style very influenced by boleros with sad lyrics and interpretations.

Unfortunately, in 1977, Maysa died in a car crash on a bridge that connects Rio de Janeiro and Niterio cities.
