Zaccarias e Seu Conjunto de Boite - Uma Noite no Country Club (1958)

Hello, good evening! Here we go on a truly amazing album recorded in 1958 by Maestro Zaccarias. This great cover features Zaccarias e Seu Conjunto de Boite at The Country Club of Rio de Janeiro, the most sophisticated club in Rio that is very hard to be admitted and with a very long list of really famous people barred in the entrance.

thecountryclubThe Country Club already exists in Ipanema and I found today this awesome picture of Ipanema in the beginning of the last century, featuring the tennis courts of Country Club. Take a look how Ipanema was an empty place at the time; you can click the picture to get a larger version to see the courts and neighborhood details.

This is Zaccarias e Seu Conjunto de Boite – Uma Noite no Country Club (1958), for Columbia. If it is almost impossible to get inside the Country Club, at least we can check this picture with Cristo Redentor rising on the background and also listen to the music performed there in 1958 by Maestro Zaccarias and his group of top-notch musicians. Zaccarias had a contract with Country Club to perform every Sunday night with his Conjunto, featuring the legendary pianist Fats Elpidio, the bassist Bill and the drummer Romeu. In this session, they had also the participation of the special guests the pistonist Maurilio and Barao at the rhythm section. I think no one should skip this one. Tracks include:

I’m only bringing this album to the spotlight due relevant information sent by an anonymous contributir today. Maestro Zacarrias = Zaccarias e Sua Secao de Pahetas | Palhetas Espetaculares (1962), was release in December 14, with no information on personnel listing. I’m bringing it to the spotlight due a relevant information sent by an anonymous friend that could gather personnel listing from “Parada de LPs”, written by Silvio Tulio.

Silvio Tulio in May 03, 1962, wrote complete personnel listing on his article, which I’m making available bellow, updating the original post. Friends of Brazil-on-Guitar will be really excited discovering an unknown Baden Powell album as sideman. Thanks anonymous, I hope you come back to tell us how can you dig such old newspapers like this one.

This is the original post with personnel update. Do not miss original anonymous writing in comments section and download package with better cover artwork scans.

This record makes a nice explanation of the classification of musical instruments at back cover linear notes as families of musical instruments as they are organized in an orchestra. I will try to summarize to our friends.

Musical instruments are grouped into families based on how they make sounds. In an orchestra, musicians sit together in these family groupings. But this is not that simple, some instruments seem to be of a family and by the way sound is produced, they are categorized in another. For instance, I heard somewhere that sax and clarinets are from the same group of the acoustic guitar, since the concept is a wood that vibrates on both cases. In Brazil, this family is known as Familia das Palhetas.

Confusing… Anyway, this record is all about the Palhetas with sax and clarinets. This is Zaccarias e Sua Secao de Palhetas – Palhetas Espetaculares (1962), for RCA Victor, wonderful orchestra album, all about the Palhetas family. Zaccarias – by the way, a new Brazilian Maestro at Loronix – organizes his Secao de Palhetas as 5 saxophones and 4 clarinets, backed up by a rhythmic section as of bass, piano, drums, guitar and percussion. Another nice release that was kindly sent to zecalouro by our great friend Caetano Rodrigues. I invite you to check this wonderful album and share your comments with us. Tracks include:

Personnel
Paulo Moura, Jose Sergio, Josino, Botelho
(clarinet)
Jaime Araujo, Jorge Ferreira, Sandoval, Aurino, Joaquim Goncalves

Quarteto Excelsior – Coquetel Dancante Nr. 1 (1957)

This is the first out of a series of really unique LPs, mainly Brazilian instrumental music from the late 50’s and 60’s. The source of this series comes from another donation to Loronix, made by someone that lives in Rio de Janeiro and this is the only thing I know about. It was just a matter of exchanging three or four emails to receive a box of twelve LPs dropped by someone at my building Lobby.

I decided to start with this one, recorded in 1957 – which is before Bossa Nova – and with a lot of Bossa Nova on it. This album confirms that Bossa Nova creation was a jointly work forged by several Brazilian artists, such as Quarteto Excelsior, a very well arranged and wonderfully played album with a cool male singing, very similar to that one we know as Bossa Nova way of singing.

This is Quarteto Excelsior – Coquetel Dancante Nr. 1 (1957), for RCA Victor. I will be straightforward, personnel listing is enough to explain this release, but I want to highlight Maestro Zaccarias, delivering solid clarinet solos and singing on a surprising and smooth voice for that time and Fats Elpidio, a legendary Brazilian pianist with a few albums already available at Loronix. Tracks includes:

PersonnelMaestro Zaccarias
(clarinet, voice)
Fats Elpidio
(piano)
Bill
(bass)
Romeu
(drums, vocals)

Track List

01 – Baião do Lavrador (Valdrido Silva / Zaccarias)
02 – Abre a Janela (Roberto Roberti / Arlindo Marques Júnior)
03 – Lá no Norte (Gilvan Chaves)
04 – Tiradentes (Estanislau Silva / Penteado / Décio Carlos)
05 – Pau-de-arara (Luis Gonzaga / Guio de Morais)
06 – Batuque no Morro (Russo do Pandeiro / Sá Róris)
07 – The Very Thought Of You (R. Noble) Love Me Tender (Elvis Presley / V. Matsen) Anastasia (Paul Francis Webster / A. Newman)
08 – Petticoats Of Portugal (Durso / Mitabel) Angustia (Orlando de Brito) Esperame En El Cielo (Francisco Lopez Vidal “Paquito”) Que Murmuren (R. Fuentes / R. Cardenas)
09 – You’re Sensational (Cole Porter) I Love You Samantha (Cole Porter) True Love (Cole Porter)

Hello, good night! Precisely, 100 years ago, a newspaper based in Recife state, Brazil, published a note with the repertoire of the rehearsals from main Carnaval clubs of the city. Among several ones, a give tune had a special name, “O Frevo”, the first time in history that the name “Frevo” appeared written and this event celebrates the creation of this Carnaval genre that has the same name after 100 years, Frevo.

This is a small Loronix celebration for Frevo 100 year’s anniversary. The word Frevo has its origins from the word Ferver – free translated as boil, in English. If you never had the chance to see a Frevo performance, take a look at YouTube, there are several ones. A Frevo performance is very difficult and seems to me that you need to be an athlete to make such complex movements. Frevo is still very popular in Brazilian Northeast region, if you are planning to spend your Carnaval there, you should probably see several performances.

This is Zacarrias e Sua Orquestra – Frevo 40 Graus (1961), for RCA Victor. Maestro Zaccarias seems to be the master of mixing Brazilian rhythms with orchestra arrangements. He makes with Frevo this time on this nice set with single tracks on each side; Zaccarias connects all the tunes, ideal if you are planning to play Frevo on your Carnaval Party. Tracks include:

01 – Deixa de Xodó (David Vasconcelos)
02 – Homenagem à Folia (Edgard Morais)
03 – Lágrimas de Clarinete (Lourival Oliveira)
04 – Sempre Atrapalhado (Jorge Gomes)
05 – Sai Dessa (José Gonçalves “Zumba”)
06 – O Adeus de Lia (José Felipe / João Santiago)
07 – Recordação de Merabeau (José Ferreira)
08 – Pra Você (Fernando Borges)
09 – Bueno no Frevo (Levino Ferreira)
10 – Segura Esse Bode (Irmãos Valença)
11 – Adeus dos Foliões (Francisquinho)
12 – Recordando a Mocidade (Edgard Morais)
.

Maestro Zaccarias e Sua Orquestra – Sambas em Desfile (1955)

I’m now a big fan of the 10-inch records released in the mid 50’s. The thing that I like most about these 10-inch is that you never know what you will have before hearing. Some of them are simple and beautiful and some others – such like the last Turma da Gafieira – are complex and seem to be ahead of the time they were recorded. Another fact is the size of the record, fitting an average of 20 minutes of music in eight tracks, not so short as the single or EP and not so long as the LP. I’m sad that 10-inch had disappeared very soon.

Let’s make another 10-inch, another contribution from the legendary Mr. X., one of the first Loronix contributors and one of the most patient ones since I have several albums sent by him waiting and he does not mind it. Thanks Mr. X. This is Maestro Zaccarias e Sua Orquestra – Sambas em Desfile (1955), for RCA Victor, one of the earliest Maestros Zaccarias LPs. This record is a truly amazing orchestra album with Samba rhythms, played such like the old Escolas de Samba from Rio de Janeiro and Gafieiras use to make. A nice piece of a very old record provided for Mr. X. that Loronixers should not miss. Tracks include:

01 – Está Chegando a Hora (Henricão / Rubens Campos)
02 – Madalena (Ari Macedo / Airton Amorim)
03 – Pra Seu Governo (Haroldo Lobo / Milton de Oliveira)
04 – Meu Consolo É Você (Antônio Nássara / Roberto Martins)
05 – Não Tenho Lágrimas (Max Bulhões / Milton de Oliveira)
06 – Palpite Infeliz (Noel Rosa)
07 – Maria Boa (Assis Valente)
08 – É Bom Parar (Rubens Soares)
