Hello, good evening! Brazil celebrates Carmen Miranda 100th Centennial today. She was born in 9 February 1909. I’m disappointed for not having any album with her unique music to make a tribute. However, it is essential that Loronix makes this tribute.

I like this picture with Carmen Miranda without all that tropical clothes and I hope you also like it. In addition, I’m making available two videos that are really worth checking out. The first video features Carmen Miranda hosted by Ed Wynn in 1949, United States. She has the accompaniment of the legendary O Bando da Lua, and you can notice the presence of Aloysio de Oliveira among O Bando da Lua members. Thanks to Doni Sacramento for this important document.

The second features the last known Carmen Miranda images and impressive scenes of her funeral in Rio de Janeiro, 1955. Thanks to In Memorian website for sharing this film.

I hope our tribute to Carmen Miranda is respectful and appropriate to the importance of this great artist.

Hope uEnjoy!

Hi again! Two posts in a single day and both have connections. Although we have music, this is all about a movement among Brazilian filmmakers in the 1950’s and 1960’s known as Cinema Novo. This is the original soundtrack of probably the most famous film from Cinema Novo, featuring Sergio Ricardo and the acclaimed filmmaker Glauber Rocha. There is a very interesting statement about Cinema Novo, “Uma camera na mao e uma ideia na cabeca” (“a camera in the hand and an idea in the had”), which is an adequate description of the movement, which main topics included Brazilian poverty using the Northeast region as setting for the productions. Let’s see.

This is Sergio Ricardo e Glauber Rocha – Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol (1964), for Forma, with music by Sergio Ricardo and Glauber Rocha, production by Roberto Quartin and speeches by the actors Othon Bastos and Geraldo Del Rey. Glauber Rocha also wrote the back cover liner notes and he mentions the legendary Grande Otelo singing a Ze Ketti’s Samba Magoa de Sambista at Nelson Pereira dos Santos film “Rio Zona Norte” from 1957. I found it on the excellent Bossa Brasileira, also available below. Don’t miss this video and have a nice Sunday and a very good first 2009 week. Tracks include:

back
01 – Abertura (Sergio Ricardo / Glauber Rocha)
02 – Manuel e Rosa (Sergio Ricardo / Glauber Rocha)
03 – Sebastião (Sergio Ricardo / Glauber Rocha)
04 – Discurso de Sebastião (Sergio Ricardo / Glauber Rocha)
05 – A Mãe (Sergio Ricardo / Glauber Rocha)
06 – Antônio das Mortes (Sergio Ricardo / Glauber Rocha)

This is an amazing collaboration from Loronix official correspondent in Italy, Mr. Gabrielli Brunini, presenting us the whole footage of legendary movie Copacabana Palace, filmed in Rio de Janeiro with the participation of Joao Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Luiz Bonfá and Os Cariocas.

Now we have much more than it was available before, including several bikini scenes, the whole beach action and Antonio Carlos Jobim acting, not just as a musician. I made four excerpts with their participation, as follows:

1) Open Credits, with beautiful aerial imagery of Rio de Janeiro and movie credits.

2) Beach Take ONE, with the already known beach images and complements (take a look at Luiz Bonfa with a fish at the post opening).

3) Beach Take TWO, with never seen images.

4) With The Family, showing the boys and their families watching a Samba School parade on TV.

The film is delicious and brings several 1962 images of Rio de Janeiro. Thank you Gabrielli, Loronixers will be pleased with your fantastic collaboration.

Hope uEnjoy!

Não sei se os trechos selecionados pelo Zeca são exatamente os mesmos que consegui no Youtube. Vários outros estão disponíveis lá. Além disto, a trilha sonora do filme foi publicada aqui.

.

I spent much of the last forty-eight hours thinking about on this post and this text, perhaps one of the most planned posts ever at Loronix. Different approaches were developed, but now I think it is better to forget all plans and write everything from scratch, instinctively on a single breath. I’m pleased to introduce to our community Jorge Mello, musician, composer, music researcher, teacher, book writer and a major reference of the works of Anibal Augusto Sardinha, also known as Garoto.

It is very easy to get along with Jorge Mello’s writing about Garoto and other Brazilian music subjects at the Internet. Sovaco de Cobra published a series of posts called O Cancioneiro de Garoto, with full Jorge Mello’s support. You can also reach Daniella Thompson’s Musica Brasiliensis website with several Jorge Mello’s contributions, such as this amazing writing about Trio Surdina.

At Loronix, I’m making a video with excerpts of ESPN Brasil Pontape Inicial show dedicated to Bossa Nova with the participation of Jorge Mello. It is a nice video, with ESPN friends talking a little bit about Loronix, thanks to Wilson Libutti for referencing Loronix to ESPN Pontape Inicial friends.

Well, thanks a lot Jorge. I’m sure your great sharing spirit will make a lot of difference to Loronix in the forthcoming days, actually forthcoming months. Maybe years?

Let’s watch the video, you can click on individual parts or watch the whole thing from the first one.

Copacabana M-908

Hello, good evening! I made consistent progress on creating the strategy of old post’s reconstruction. That was the reason of my absence yesterday. It is important to set up procedures to make the work easy and organized, with little errors, so that everyone can participate. I am doing what I can to document the procedures to engage the community, but I believe that one more day of refinement would be required. I will keep you posted.

The show must go on and this post is all about entertainment blending Brazilian music and soccer (futebol), very close associated. Let’s see.

This is Temas das Copas do Mundo 1958 e 1970 (1970), for Copacabana, a single, featuring the themes of 1958 and 1970 World Cup, won by Brazil in Sweden and Mexico respectively. I believe that all the friends of Brazil know how to sing these songs by heart, especially the second, released in commemoration of the third Brazilian championship. I’m making available a documentary of the 1970 World Cup final match with Brazil and Italy, a must for those who love soccer, featuring Pelé, Jairzinho, Tostão, Rivelino and other renowned soccer players. Tracks include:

Elizeth Cardoso - Feito em Casa (1974)

Hello, good evening! Today I decided to pick up one of my first vinyl transfers at Loronix and made it again, just to see if my skills were improved after making several others transfers across the last year. My choice was this fantastic and underrated Elizeth Cardoso LP, released in 1974 at Copacabana. I read that Joao Gilberto reaches his magnificent guitar playing and interpretation using repetitions and repetition really makes you perform better. This reposting is the outcome with improvements on music and also front and back cover scans. I’m gathering my first April 1 2007 writing. Let’s see.

Original writing

Let’s make a solid start today posting a album that is probably unknown to many friends, recorded by one of the most loved female singer at Loronix, Elizeth Cardoso.

This is Elizeth Cardoso – Feito em Casa (1974), for Copacabana, all about Samba from start to end with Elizeth Cardoso delivering all her vocal tricks, accompanied by a female chorus and arranged by top-notch Brazilian Maestros, such as Geraldo Vespar, Chiquinho de Moraes and Sergio Carvalho. Samba fans will be delighted with this album that reveals Elizeth Cardoso as a really nice Samba interpreter. The back cover has something never seen before, photos of all composers of the twelve tracks. Elizeth seems to be really in charge of each record she makes. Feito em Casa has also the mighty Moacyr Silva as production director.

I’m sending also a gorgeous video with voice and bass featuring Elizeth Cardoso and Luiz Chaves of Zimbo Trio performing Se Queres Saber (Peter Pan). It is not necessary to say, but I like to say if you forget, it is another Powered by Luiz Harding video. Tracks include:

Maria Odette (1966)

This single is very interesting for different reasons, first, by that cover artwork, more suitable for a film by Alfred Hitchcock. Second, the legendary label Mocambo and its first single at Loronix. Third, the opportunity to watch the video that probably gave the chance to make this little album, recorded during Festival da Musica Popular Brasileira Rede Record (1966). There are other interesting things to tell about this single, but it is better tell you in the next paragraph. Let’s see.

This is Maria Odette – Festival da Musica Popular Brasileira (1966), for Mocambo, featuring Um Dia (Caetano Veloso) on Side A, which is the song that received the prize of the best lyrics on that Festival and Levante (Geraldo Vandre) on Side B. The video features Maria Odette performing Um Dia with the participation of Caetano Veloso at the audience with the camera delivering a lot of time with Caetano images instead of Maria Odette. Tracks include:

01 – Um Dia (Caetano Veloso)
02 – Levante (Geraldo Vandre)

Paulinho Nogueira - O Fino do Violao Vol. 2 (1980)

Hello, good evening! I want to start today addressing a challenge made by our friend GR at the comment section of the last Paulinho Nogueira post. I cannot wait to see GR playing instrumental guitar on video, since Paulinho Nogueira – O Fino do Violao Vol. 2 (1980) is on GR waiting list. Let’s see.

I like Paulinho Nogueira violao only albums, please check the end of this post for three music videos with Paulinho Nogueira playing Bachianinha Nr. 1 alone and with Toquinho and a wonderful rendition of Air on the G string by J. Miltinho - Poema do Adeus (1962)

There was a time at Loronix where every month we had a new album recorded by one of the Samba interpreters that I like most, Milton Santos de Almeida or just Miltinho. I could not believe when Loronix Find It returned the last Miltinho album as of August 2007, it is almost a year and Miltinho needs to be back to Loronix first page immediately. Let’s see.

This is Miltinho – Poema do Adeus (1962), for RGE, featuring Orquestra RGE with not credited maestro and musicians. Poema do Adeus is a very early Miltinho record, but is not an album recorded by a beginner. Since the 40’s, Miltinho was an active artist, being member of renowned vocal groups, such like: Cancioneiros do Luar, Namorados da Lua, Anjos do Inferno and Quatro Ases e um Coringa. I’m taking advantage of the opportunity to replay a fantastic music video featuring Miltinho and Ed Motta, performing Meu Nome e Ninguem in the year of 2003. I forgot to say that Rildo Hora is the harmonica player. Tracks include:

01 – Poema do Adeus (Luis Antônio)
02 – Palhaçada (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
03 – Estou Só (Raul Sampaio / Benil Santos)
04 – Fim de Parceria (Fernando César / Dalton Vogeler)
05 – A Canção Que Virou Você (Luis Antônio)
06 – Maldade (Jair Amorim / Evaldo Gouveia)
07 – Mulata Assanhada (Ataulfo Alves)
08 – Estrada do Amor (Luis Antônio)
09 – Solução (Raul Sampaio / Ivo Santos)
10 – E o Tempo Parou (Édson Borges)
11 – Perdoa Coração (Marino Pinto / Aloísio de Barros)

Orlando Silva - 25 Anos Cantando para as Multidoes (1959)

This is one of those wise contributions made by my mother. I had with me that Orlando Silva was one of the greatest Brazilian singers of the radio years and this album shows that Orlando Silva is the greatest Brazilian singer of all time. Ruy Castro says that Orlando Silva was the best singer in the world on his peak. My apologies to my mother and to every Orlando Silva fan for keeping this album on wait for several months. Let’s see.

This is Orlando Silva – 25 Anos Cantando para as Multidoes (1959), for Odeon, presented here with Imperial (1968) reissue, a tribute to Orlando Silva 25 years of recording career, featuring a compilation with tunes that I could not identify the first release date. Ruy Castro says Orlando Silva golden years were from the late 30’s to the early 40’s, and I would like very much if someone make additional work to identify each track release year. Loronix is all about Orlando Silva tonight, I’m making available a full documentary taken from Arquivo da Cinemateca do Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro, O Cantor das Multidoes, available on three chapters via Loronix streaming video. Tracks include:

01 – Errei Erramos (Ataulpho Alves)
02 – Ciúme Sem Razão (Joao de Barro / Alberto Ribeiro)
03 – Boêmio (Ataulpho Alves / W. Falcao)
04 – Uma Saudade a Mais Uma Esperança a Menos (Silvino Neto / Carlos Moraes)
05 – Fuga (Lupscinio Rodrigues)

07 – A Última Canção (Guilherme A. Pereira)

Hello, good evening! Carnaval is not over, but the end is approaching. I want to admit that our Carnaval album coverage was really bellow my worst estimates, so I decided to make something different to close Carnaval time sending zecalouro with his digital camera to the eye of the hurricane. The results are available bellow with a Copacabana panorama showing clusters of human beings across the beach and a movie featuring Carnaval images (real Carnaval footage!!) taken from the top of the building and the most difficult part, in the ground together with the mass.

My apologies for the quality of the movie, it was taken today at 6:30 p.m. during Bloco Carnavalesco Meu Bem Volto Ja parade. This should be boring for the friends in Brazil, but a real treat for friends who never had the chance to come to Rio de Janeiro during Carnaval time.

Hope uEnjoy!

PS. Meu Bem Volto Ja is the second from the left to right.

Sylvia Telles - Amor Em HI-FI

Let’s close tonight with the update of an album released in the very first beginning of Loronix. I think the update of old and essential posts are very useful to friends who are new to Loronix. There is much to explore in the archives and the updates give better exposition to the best we have available, such like this one, featuring one of the most popular artists in our community. Let’s see.

This is Sylvia Telles – Amor em HI-FI (1960), for Philips, the first album released by Sylvia Telles at Philips, just before the acclaimed Amor de Gente Moca, with Antonio Carlos Jobim repertoire. I like this album, but I think I would like much better if Philips credited more info about. Personnel is totally unknown, including arrangers and musicians in this session with Sylvia Telles performing a repertoire of Bossa Nova standards, a medley with international songs and a Frech version of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Dolores Duran Por Causa de Voce, here as Gardez Moi Pour Toujours. Hello, good evening! This challenge came from our very good friend Jose Matos that asks our community to identify the musicians performing Chega de Saudade with Chico Buarque and Edu Lobo. I have identified the drummer and bassist, being the pianist and the flutist to be confirmed. Who knows who are they?

Hello, good evening! Rapidshare.com was down in the last 6 hours, the first long-term Rapidshare outage since the beginning of Loronix. I’m now happy that we are back to business and I want to thanks everybody who sent reports across these six anxious hours.

I’m so happy that I want to start this Saturday with something never tried before at Loronix. We are really close to Carnaval and for the first time a Carnaval Parade is being released with a video. This is Mangueira Samba Scholl 1986 parade featuring Dorival Caymmi and one of the best Samba Enredos I have ever heard. I think this should be a real treat to everybody who lives outside of Brazil and never had an opportunity to watch a Carnaval Parade. Mangueira Official Samba interpreter, Jamelao, performs the song. Thanks to Carl Ole from O Balaio do Carl for making this fantastic video available.

Hope uEnjoy!

CAYMMI MOSTRA AO MUNDO O QUE A BAHIA E A MANGUEIRA TEM
(Ivo, Paulinho, Lula)

Mangueira vê no céu dos orixás
O horizonte rosa no verde do mar
A alvorada veste a fantasia
Pra exaltar Caymmi e a velha Bahia ô, ô, ô
Quanto esplendor
Nas igrejas soam hinos de louvor
E pelos terreiros de magia
O ecoar anuncia um novo dia
Nesta terra fascinante
A capoeira foi morar

O mundo se encanta
Com as cantigas que fazem sonhar

Lua cheia
Leva a jangada pro mar
Oh! Sereia
Como é belo o teu cantar
Das estrelas
A mais linda tá no Gantois
Mangueira berço do samba
Caymmi a inspiração
Que mora no meu coração
Bahia terra sagrada
Iemanjá, Iansã
Mangueira supercampeã

Tem xinxim e acarajé
Tamborim e samba no pé

Our new player is really great! Now we can create playlists with several videos on a single post. I’m making available a medley with a new Luiz Bonfa video with Julie Andrews and Steve Lawrence and reposts of Ana Mazzoti, Os Cariocas, Flora Purim, Oscar Castro Neves and Walter Wanderley. Important, if you need to go back to the first screen to select a new video, click at the icon in the lower right corner, close to player time indicator.

Hope uEnjoy!

Pelo texto do Zeca, o único vídeo que consegui identificar foi o do Luiz Bonfá com a Julie Andrews e Steve Lawrence. Os demais parecem ser reposts, não sei exatamente quais são …

Dickauditorio

This is a moving documentary with 17 minutes running time with a tribute to Dick Farney broadcasted on Brazilian TV by the time of his passing. There are available excerpts of old movies, Dick Farney performances that I never saw before, interviews with Lucio Alves, Braguinha, Billy Blanco and a beautiful closing with Dick Farney’s wife interview at the couple place. Fascinating, even if you don’t understand Portuguese it is really worth checking.

Hope uEnjoy!

Music Video – Manha de Carnaval | from Orfeu Negro (1959)

Hello, good evening! And Happy New Year! I made today an important achievement on my Bossa Nova education, watching for the first time the original 1959 Marcel Camus Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus) movie. Now I understand why this movie had a major role on leverage Bossa Nova popularity outside of Brazil, it is a nice movie 50 years later; I can’t realize how good it would be watching for the first time in 1959. I decided to start 2008 with this excerpt of Orfeu Negro, when Orfeu shows his new song for the first time to two kids with Eurydice dancing around the place. The song is Manha de Carnaval.

Hope uEnjoy!

Maria Lucia Godoy - Interpreta Villa Lobos (1977)

I’m sure that Maria Lucia Godoy has several admirers at Loronix, and I feel really glad about it, from a rather unknown to a very requested artist by many friends. It is not easy to find her albums and I was even satisfied with the two previous we made at Loronix. This third one, with Maria Lucia Godoy performing Villa Lobos at his 90th anniversary is a real find, she is truly gorgeous in this session and is backed by Sergio Abreu, a Brazilian guitarist, brother of Eduardo Abreu from the legendary and acclaimed Duo Abreu. Let’s see.

This is Maria Lucia Godoy – Maria Lucia Godoy Interpreta Villa Lobos (1977), for Philips, featuring an orchestra of cellos on tracks 01 to 05 conducted by Alceo Bocchino and the guitar and arrangements of Sergio Abreu on tracks 06 to 11. I’m making available a music video with Duo Abreu performing a Domenico Scarlatti Sonata, K.141 in 1974. Duo Abreu was internationally acclaimed, but had a short career. Sergio Abreu is now an international highly praised luthier since he left his career as musician in the beginning of the 80’s. Stay with Maria Lucia Godoy and do not miss Dou Abreu music video, perhaps their only known video performance. Tracks include:

01 – ”Bachianas Brasileiras Nº 5” Ária (Cantilena) (Villa-Lobos / Ruth Valadares Correia) Dança (Martelo) (Villa-Lobos / Manuel Bandeira)
02 – Na Paz do Outono (Villa-Lobos / Ronald de Carvalho)
03 – Lundu da Marquesa de Santos (Villa-Lobos / Viriato Correia)
04 – Desejo (Villa-Lobos / Guilherme de Almeida)
05 – Cantiga do Viúvo (Villa-Lobos / Carlos Drummond de Andrade)
06 – Canção do Amor (De ”Floresta do Amazonas”) (Villa-Lobos / Dora Vasconcelos)
07 – Cantilena (O Rei Mandou Me Chamar) (Villa-Lobos)
08 – Modinha (Villa-Lobos)
09 – Remeiro de São Francisco (Villa-Lobos)
10 – Canção do Poeta do Século XVIII (Villa-Lobos / Alfredo Ferreira)
11 – ”Suíte” A Menina e a Canção (Villa-Lobos) Quero Ser Alegre (Villa-Lobos) Sertaneja (Villa-Lobos)

Não tinha esse disco. Porém, graças ao amigo Martoni, ele pode ser buscado aqui.

Acredito que o vídeo é o que segue:

This is a nice music video taken from a 1958 Brazilian movie, featuring Nelson Goncalves and another singer that I don’t know who is. Get the chance and try to figure out who is he.

Hope uEnjoy!

Pelos comentários e pela foto do post, acredito que o vídeo é o abaixo. Porém, como não aparece o Nelson Gonçalves nele, fico em dúvida se é ele mesmo e por isso fica na categoria “Vídeos com defeito”.

Hello, good evening! Let’s start today with a music video sent by a friend of us as a YouTube link. By the way, I receive a lot of video recommendations to Loronix, but I don’t have space to address the majority, that’s why it is necessary to release the ones that I consider of great interest and with some kind of uniqueness. Such like this one, featuring Armandinho and Conjunto Epoca de Ouro, performing Assanhado (Jacob do Bandolim) on Brazilian TV.

Hope uEnjoy!

Hello, good evening! Let’s make such like yesterday, starting this Saturday with a video challenge game. The mission seems to be quite impossible this time. You will have to identify the mysterious singer, the band name and also the drums player. I hope I’m not wrong, but there is a nice surprise with this challenge.

Hope uEnjoy!

Não consegui o vídeo, mas pelas respostas a cantora é a Julie Joy, a banda é o Conjunto Penumbra e o baterista é o Helcio Milito, do Tamba Trio. Alguém teria o vídeo para nos enviar?
