Hello, Good Evening! I was waiting for a friend today; he said he would bring a “wonderful thing” to Loronix. Unfortunately, I felt asleep in the middle of the day – sorry pal – but he left a pen drive at the lobby. This is what he meant as the wonderful thing. I would say it is a fantastic thing, Oscar Castro Neves playing Aguas de Marco (Waters of March). The first Oscar Castro Neves video at Loronix deserves to be our opening today. Truly amazing. Do not miss the increase lens to get the most from the widescreen format. I’m busy today and I will give additional information later.

Hope uEnjoy!

Baden Powell – Baden / O Som de Baden Powell (1968)

Link original: Baden Powell – Baden / O Som de Baden Powell (1968)
Publicado em: Thursday, May 24, 2007 by zecalouro

What else can we say more about Baden Powell, the great master of Brazilian guitar? Everything was said, shown and heard here at Loronix. Baden Powell legacy is fantastic, he recorded several albums, really above the average. Baden Powell appearances on film is also widely available at the Internet, VHS tapes of fans and even documentary made in Brazil, Germany, France, among other countries.

Additionally, Baden Powell is has the best musician website I have ever seen so far, Brazil-on-Guitar.de, which is an honor to have it listed at Loronix a friend website. Don’t miss Brazil-on-Guitar, which I ask for help on reviewing another fantastic Baden Powell album.

This is Baden Powell – Baden / O Som de Baden Powell (1968), for Elenco as ME-48. Brazil-on-Guitar says: Baden is an outtake album from the Tristeza on Guitar sessions in July 1966. They are alternative takes with slight variations e.g. in Das Rosas or Round Midnight and unused songs like Canto de Ossanha or Lamento, one title was named differently. They have a very different sound. The SABA recording sound have a stronger bass sound, probably according to the musical taste of producer Joachim E. Berendt. The sound of the Brazilian Elenco pressing sounds more intimate and personal, without the strong bass sound on all instruments.

Thus it is not a simple re-pressing of the famous SABA record, but shows a certain independence, reaching uniqueness. This is emphasised by using rare pictures, Baden Powell ether with Herbie Mann, who did not take part in the recording session, and a less typical PR picture showing Baden doing a chord spanning six frets.

Baden is a well-done outtake album, unfortunately the only in his discography. BOG recommends listening to both recordings, if possible the Japanese CD version of Tristeza on Guitar and the Baden-reissue from 2003 (whose tracklist is wrong, Sarava instead if Samba de Bencao, furthermore there is a graphical mistake in the front cover).

Mr. E. is always amazing us, thanks for this one Mr. E., one of the coolest challenges ever at Loronix and the first in a new category, the audio challenge. There are two Antonio Carlos Jobim songs on each video bellow, Eu Nao Existo sem Voce and Eu Sei que Eu Vou te Amar performed by two mysterious singers as they were a caipira or sertanejo duo.

The challenge is to identify the duo, who is singing Antonio Carlos Jobim on this funny way? I blend the music with Macaw videos just to entertain you while identifying the mysterious duo. Thanks once again Mr. E. this should be really amazing.

For Loronix friends outside of Brazil, they are singing Musica Caipira or Musica Sertaneja, which is a term from Brazilian country music.

Hope uEnjoy!

Publicado em: Thursday, May 17, 2007 by zecalouro

Hello, Good Evening! Everybody knows that Tania Maria is among the artists that I have limited knowledge about, but I know that Tania Maria puts her heart on top of everything she makes, mainly live concerts, which are the ones that I like most. This concert was first made available with the help of Jean-Yves, also known as Jean do Trombone, and now Caetano Rodrigues makes it again on a better quality, for mine and for Loronixers pleasure.

This is Tania Maria – Tania Maria Live (1979), for Accord, live performance at the Azzhus Montmartre, Copenhagen, featuring Tania Maria (piano and vocal), Andre Ceccarelli (bass) and Marc Bertheaux (drums). I decided to make it with no track separation, delivering to Loronixers a single track for each side. Take also a time to watch the video with Tania Maria performing live. Tracks include:

01 – Mr. & Mrs.
02 – Cartomante
03 – Pingas da Vida
04 – Seu Dia Vai Chegar
05 – O Que e Amar
06 – Carona

Luiz Bonfa e Sylvia Telles – Luiz Bonfa e Sylvia Telles (1958) | EP

18 03 2012

Link na Internet Wayback Machine: Luiz Bonfa e Sylvia Telles – Luiz Bonfa e Sylvia Telles (1958) | EP
Publicado em: FRIDAY, MAY 04, 2007

You don’t need to scratch your eyes or check your glasses; it is true, Luiz Bonfa and Sylvia Telles together on recording. Mr. E. made history at Loronix with his last contribution, Copacabana Palace OST with Bonus Tracks, additions and videos. Copacabana Palace alone was enough to instantly admit Mr. E. to Loronix Honor Pantheon. However, the tireless Mr. E strikes again with this unique EP and does not save another jewel for a later time, making together a video with Sylvia Telles that I never saw before. Thanks once again Mr. E., your music is really exciting and you also know the stuff you have.

This is Luiz Bonfa e Sylvia Telles – Luiz Bonfa e Sylvia Telles (1958), for Odeon (EP, BWB 1040). As I said, Mr. E. knows the business, he said this is the outcome of a supposed LP with Sylvia Telles singing Luiz Bonfa repertoire, however, Odeon seems to have aborted the project, making only this EP commercially available. Luiz Bonfa guitar can be heard in all tunes and share vocals with Sylvia Telles on Perdido de Amor.

The video is another Mr. E. trick and is important and exciting as the EP, showing Sylvia Telles performing Demais (Antonio Carlos Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira) at the same Brazilian movie film Mr. E. sent to us, Assassinato em Copacabana. Sylvia Telles is Mr. E. favorite diva and he says she was in her peak. I agree 100% with Mr. E. Sylvinha is really great at this video that you should watch with a great attention as a rare piece. Thanks once again Mr. E. Tracks include:

Sylvia Telles – Demais
.01 – Tanto amor (Luiz Bonfá – Reynaldo Dias Leme)
02 – De braços lassos (Luiz Bonfá)
03 – Meu sonho (Luiz Bonfá)
04 – Perdido de amor (Luiz Bonfá)This is Luiz Bonfa e Sylvia Telles – Luiz Bonfa e Sylvia Telles (1958), at Loronix, by Mr. E.

.

9 – Cancao do vaqueiro
10 – Paz de espirito
11 – Tu bem querer
12 – Outro adeus

Espero que algum dia escutemos o LP na íntegra!

Quanto ao vídeo, ele foi conseguido graças ao nosso amigo AD (Brazilliance). Thanks, AD!

Caetano never stops to amaze Loronixers, now he goes on a sought after collectors item, Taiguara debut LP for Philips, 1965. Everybody knows that zecalouro is a newbie to Taiguara music and Caetano is providing us a great start with this album. Reviewers say this record is one of the best Taiguara albums. Thanks Caetano for providing this unique opportunity.

This is Taiguara – Taiguara (1965), for Philips, celebrated with comments of Luiz Eca, Edu Lobo and Alaide Costa throughout the artwork. Luiz Chavez, Zimbo Trio bassist, is in charge of arrangements and conduction. I did not have the chance to check how Taiguara music evolved in the forthcoming years until his passing in 1996 and I’m sure if he kept the pace, youth and swing he delivers at this debut, later releases would be all great. I’m making available a video sent by a Loronix friend with Taiguara performing Cavaleiro da Esperanca at Projeto Seis e Meia at Teatro Joao Caetano. Tracks include:

01 – Samba de Copo na Mão (Taiguara)
02 – Preciso Aprender a Ser Só (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
03 – Mulata É Pra Sambar (Taiguara)
04 – Graúna (Glaciliano Correia da Silva / Taiguara)
05 – Cecília (Taiguara)
06 – Flor da Manhã (Adilson Godoy)
07 – Formosa (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
08 – O Pesqueiro (Taiguara)
09 – Eu Não Sou do Morro (Geraldo Cunha / Alberto Helena Jr.)
10 – A Hora do Nego (Taiguara)
11 – Samba de Verão (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle) Garota de Ipanema (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)

Hello, Good Evening! Sometimes we need to be straightforward, this is the time. Mr. E., the mighty Mr. E. that sent to us Mary Goncalvez, Zeze Gonzaga among several other truly amazing contributions, sent this pearl. I would like to title this post as “All About Copacabana Palace Film”, Mr. E. made a real strike, sending Copacabana Palace OST and 2 excerpts of that movie with Brazilian artists performing Bossa Nova songs. We know this video is available at Loronix already, however, Mr. E. version has a much better quality and it is complete. I did not know that the previous one had some parts missing.

Publicado em: Monday, April 23, 2007 by zecalouro

Well. What can I add to what is shown on this cover picture? Not much. This is simply Zimbo Trio debut LP for RGE, one of the most fascinating instrumental trios from Brazil. Actually, I have something to say, Caetano strongly recommends Garota de Ipanema as the instrumental rendition that he likes most. I would like to please Loronixers with Garota de Ipanema by Zimbo Trio on a video (with official images of Rio de Janeiro from Prefeitura-RJ), produced by zecalouro. I’m sure that you will jump on it before watching the video with Zimbo Trio on background.

This is Zimbo Trio – Zimbo Trio (1964), for RGE, featuring Hamilton Godoy (piano), Luis Chaves (bass) and Rubens Barsotti (drums). Tracks include:

01 – Zimbo Samba (Adilson Godoy)

The Hi-Lo’s – The Hi-Lo’s Happen to Bossa Nova (1963)

Caetano sent this LP to us and now I cannot skip a day without listening to it with zecalouro. They are nice guys. I felt very sad when I read the collapsed early, in 1964. Anyway, some of their albums are available and this one is a great Caetano’s pick with the boys making a deep dive into the Bossa Nova hype.

This is The Hi-Lo’s – The Hi-Lo’s Happen to Bossa Nova (1963), for Reprise. Funny and really competent musicians making unique vocalizations on top of Bossa Nova. By the way, Laurindo Almeida is in charge of linear notes and says that all arrangements are from Clare Fischer. I don’t know who made the English lyrics to Brazilian tunes, but the one in charge did a great job. I’m asking for AMG help on The Hi-Lo’s bio. Caetano, this is a fantastic album, thanks for this nice pick. Tracks include:

AMG Bio:

The Hi-Lo’s were one of the more creative and influential male vocal quartets of the 1950s, matching intricate harmonies with standards that were given big band-pop arrangements. Forming in Los Angeles in the early 1950s, they began recording in 1953, just in time for the LP era — an important consideration since The Hi-Lo’s did not have huge success in the singles market. They were all over television in the 1950s, appearing on 39 episodes of The Rosemary Clooney Show alone, as well as the shows of Steve Allen, Nat “King” Cole, Pat Boone and others. In the studio, they worked with talented arrangers like Frank Comstock and Marty Paich, and hit their commercial peak with three Top 20 albums on Columbia in 1957 (one recorded with Clooney). Their inventive shadings and the wide range (particularly in the upper register) were, as is well-known, influences on Brian Wilson, and also, as is much less well-known, John Phillips. Wilson and Phillips would apply some of that harmonic influence to recordings with their groups, The Beach Boys and The Mamas And The Papas. Recent jazz-pop groups such as The Manhattan Transfer also have a significant debt to The Hi-Lo’s.

Publicado em: Sunday, April 22, 2007 by zecalouro

Hello! Good Evening! I was decided to describe how was the great day I had but I decided to be a little bit straightforward. However, I need to tell the day was great. Period. Great enough to decide on addressing this long time request by Loronixers, the debut LP of Emilio Santiago, considered one of the best Brazilian voices on the current scene. I will take also advantage to present a video and also answer an old challenge. Let’s see.

This is Emilio Santiago – Emilio Santiago (1975), for CID. I was astonished when I check the release date of Emilio Santiago first LP. Emilio took 10 years to release his fist album before he made the appearance on that early challenge at the gas station. I’m making that video available again in case you miss it. This is a very hard review, since it is a very different album from what we are used to expect from Emilio Santiago, a romantic singer with a commercial repertoire. This debut has wonderful Samba Soul renditions performed with soul. I will let the comments section for the specialist, Trix, Mr. G., Mr. B, Now, Donatinho and many others 70’s authorities. I’m making also a video by Luiz Harding showing Emilio Santiago and Cesar Camargo Mariano performing together. Tracks include:

01 – Bananeira (Gilberto Gil / João Donato)
02 – Quero Alegria (Nelson Cavaquinho / Guilherme de Brito)
03 – Porque Somos Iguais (Durval Ferreira / Pedro Camargo)
04 – Batendo a Porta (João Nogueira / Paulo César Pinheiro)
05 – Depois (Ivan Lins / Otávio Daher)
06 – Brother (Jorge Ben “Jorge Benjor”)
07 – La Mulata (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
08 – Nega Dina (Zé Keti)
09 – Doa a Quem Doer (Ivan Lins)
10 – Sessão das Dez (Tita / Édison Lobo / Renato Rocha)
.

Este disco pode ser buscado no Rio Groove FM.

Hello! Good Morning! Let’s make some earlier posts this Saturday!

Yesterday, Loronix engineers made some extra hours to record the Broadcast of top-notch instrumental music on Brazilian TV provided by Kiko Continentino and Paulo Russo. I’m making available an excerpt of the concert with some problems with audio synchronization. This is only a teaser, engineers will be back tonight to fix it and we will have on the forthcoming days several short clips of these magnificent musicians.

Kiko Continentino is a Brazilian pianist, friend of Loronix and one of the most active musicians in town, pretty connected with our community, being also official pianist of Milton Nascimento group. Paulo Russo is self-explanatory, watch the video, he is a very talented bassist that put his heart on his instrument showing passion on every note he plays.

Hello, Good Evening! This video announces the start of another Brazilian music night at Loronix. We had great nights this week and it will be very easy to keep the pace at day four of Caetano Rodrigues releases. Some friends reported to sleep badly in the last three nights, so I will try, I said try; to make everything happens earlier today.

Luiz Harding made it again selecting for us another video with the legendary Brazilian trombonist Raul de Souza, according with Maria Bethania, the best trombonist in the world. By the way, Maria Bethania delivers a truly beautiful singing. You can see by yourself, just click at the arrow bellow or use the increase lens for a bigger version.

I’m happy with this series of Joao Gilberto videos, started a couple of days ago with Joao performing Insensatez. Here we go now on another video from the same set with Joao performing a Bossa Nova classic, Wave (Antonio Carlos Jobim). This is just a teaser of what is waiting for us in the forthcoming days. Caetano has a special Joao Gilberto release to show us.

By the way, I heard today that Joao Gilberto has some sort of Guiness Book record from the longest applause ever, it was in Japan, 2003, Joao kept silent closing his eyes for 20 minutes listening to the Japanese audience’s endless applause. This is all about Joao Gilberto, a true legend that play with our extremes, some of us adore him while other does not stand or cannot understand his art.

Hope uEnjoy!

Let’s start with a video today, a special one showing a great artist and some important places in Rio, such as: Toca do Vinicius, Antonio Carlos Jobim place, anyway, thanks Luiz Harding for sending Toquinho performing Insensatez on a very beautiful video full of vintage scenes.

Walter Wanderley is one of the artists most connected to Loronix and a great part of the little Loronix popularity can be credited to Walter Wanderley albums, he is an artist that everybody likes, has an unique way of playing and an amazing popularity in Brazil and United States. We have been tracking out of print Walter Wanderley LPs that were not released at Loronix and once in a while some friend take us by surprise.

I would like to say thanks to Moos, for this contribution. Moos make a nice work in the background and I have several Moos contributions waiting for their time to appear here. Thanks Moos for remembering Walter Wanderley.

This is Walter Wanderley – O Successo e Samba (1960), for Odeon. Moss said this is the original 1960 issue, it is amazing that he found this album in Europe, while I never saw it available on any fair or shop down here. Self-explanatory release, Walter Wanderley albums are always on top of any statistics at Loronix. Moos also remember something very important; we do not have any Walter Wanderley video at Loronix. Actually, I never saw Walter Wanderley performing. If someone can make a dream come true, this is the one we are looking for, a video with Walter Wanderley. Tracks include:

01 – O Amor e a Rosa (Pernambuco / Antônio Maria)
02 – Ninho do Nonô (Denis Brean)
03 – O Menino Desce o Morro (Vera Brasil / De Rosa)
04 – Chora Tua Tristeza (Oscar Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini)
05 – Dona Baratinha (Almeida Rego / Newton Ramalho)
06 – Mulata Assanhada (Ataulfo Alves)
07 – Teleco Teco Nº 2 (Nelsinho / Oldemar Magalhães)
08 – Samba de Uma Nota Só (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
09 – Saudade Querida (Tito Madi)
10 – O Pato (Jaime Silva / Neusa Teixeira)
11 – Meditação (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
12 – Cheiro de Saudade (Djalma Ferreira / Luis Antônio)

.

Não tinha esse disco. Porém, graças aos amigos Bili e Martoni, ele agora está disponível na Rádio Forma e Elenco.

Quanto a vídeos com Walter Wanderley, ao vivo, só encontrei 1:

I’m making a break to announce that Caetano’s posts are about to start. Phone call was made and now we have finally reached a conclusion, amazing to Loronixers.

The break today is a video. I think it is everything we need to relax. Ella Fritzgerald, in Brazil, 1971, selling energy, dancing and making me feel really convinced she is one of the greatest divas. Ella Fritzgerald performs The Girl from Ipananema and a Bossa Nova medley at the end.

I think you will enjoy this a lot. Thanks the YouTube users betofs for letting people share.

Hope uEnjoy!

zecalouro recommends that you cancel dinner, turn off TV and stay tuned at Loronix. After a long and never ending day, Caetano package has finally arrived at Loronix headquarters. We are now deciding today’s picks, which is a real treat since the records are solid and wonderful, as ever.

I declare Caetano Mode = ON, effective today and ending at Loronix 1st Anniversary day on May 12th. Posts will be a little bit delayed, but don’t zap around the other channels; we are running fast to make it ready as soon as possible.

Cheers, zeca

While waiting, stay with another Powered by Luiz Harding video with Baden Powell and his son, Louis-Marcel Baden Powell performing together.

Hope uEnjoy!

Além do vídeo acima, segue um programa (em duas partes) com o Marcel Powell, onde ele fala de sua carreira, de sua relação com o pai e toca um bocado:

Elizeth Cardoso & Zimbo Trio – E de Manha (1970)

I never heard about a second collaboration between Elizeth Cardoso and Zimbo Trio besides Elizeth Cardoso e Zimbo Trio – Elizeth e Zimbo Trio Balancam na Sucata (1969), already available at Loronix. I was “introduced” to this album on an old vinyl shop in Copacabana. If you appreciate the first, don’t miss this one, recorded at the same Sucata nightclub.

This is Elizeth Cardoso e Zimbo Trio – E de Manha (1970), for Copacabana, recorded live at Sucata Nightclub as part of a show directed by Herminio Bello de Carvalho. It is amazing how this record quality is so good taking in consideration the resources available in 1970. Elizeth and Zimbo Trio can be heard together in all tunes, except tracks 05 – Zazueira and 08 – Casa Forte, instrumental tracks featuring only Zimbo Trio.

Luiz Harding sent a video with excerpts of the Brazilian movie Noite Vazia (1964), directed by Walter Hugo Khuori with Zimbo Trio in charge of the soundtrack. I think this video fits very nice with this post, you can hear Zimbo Trio in the background while watching performances by the legendary Odette Lara and Norma Bengell. Tracks include:

01 – De Manhã (Caetano Veloso) Exaltação à Bahia (Vicente Paiva / Chianca de Garcia)
02 – Ilusão à Toa (Johnny Alf)
03 – Travessia (Milton Nascimento / Fernando Brant)
04 – Eu Disse Adeus (Roberto Carlos / Erasmo Carlos)
05 – Zazueira (Jorge Ben “Jorge Benjor”)
06 – O Conde (Evaldo Gouveia / Jair Amorim)
07 – De Onde Vens (Dori Caymmi / Nelson Motta)
08 – Casa Forte (Edu Lobo)

Hello, Good Evening! I will not talk about the weather again, but it seems summer will overlap the following seasons, ending at the beginning of next summer, at least in Brazil. Everything is all right with the folks from Bahia, the Brazilian state with sun 365 days a year. That’s the connection I’m trying to make: sub, Bahia and the legendary Dorival Caymmi, his first time on video at Loronix. Just to start this, how can I say, hot Sunday.

Hope uEnjoy!

Music Video | Two Baden Powell Videos

Luiz Harding sent some nice videos this week to Loronixers, nice and big videos. This is an example, the genius of Baden Powell on two videos. The first take Baden Powell performing chorinho with friends, perhaps some party or celebration, but the video is not home-made, very well produced. I like it a lot.

The second one was also sent by Luiz Harding and shows Baden Powell performing with Dulce Nunes, produced by bossa-brasileira.blogspot.com.

I hope uEnjoy!

.

Acabei postando 3 vídeos, pois não sei qual dos dois iniciais era o do “Baden no Chorinho”.

You are probably asking yourself “when this parrot will get tired showing Joao Gilberto videos?” I would answer, never, but this one is really fascinating, simply the best interpretation of Insensatez (Antonio Carlos Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes), taken from a concert in Rome, 1983. Please use the increase lens to watch the original and big version.

Hope uEnjoy!

Music Video | George Shearing – O Morro nao Tem Vez with Lilian Carmona

Hello, Good Evening! It has been a month or two since we made available a set of videos with Luiz Eca, Luiz Alves and a wonderful female drummer called Lilian Carmona. By that time, I received some emails asking for more information about Lilian Carmona and I could not help that much, little is known about her.

Luiz Harding sent today a video with the legendary George Shearing and – guess who? – Lilian Carmona. I’m feeling confused to pick up the main performer on this video. Anyway, let’s say this is George Shearing and Lilian Carmona performing O Morro Nao Tem Vez (Antonio Carlos Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes) in another fantastic video powered by Luiz Harding.

Hope uEnjoy!

Publicado em: Friday, April 13, 2007 by zecalouro

Tomorrow is Friday and for those who are reading this post before going to work don’t skip it, this album will make you drive until work alive and kicking. If you miss it, don’t worry and make it on Monday. This is the kind of music that saves a day and Loronix has been in fault with Elza Soares, the last time she had an album at Loronix was last year, December 1st.

This is Elza Soares – Elza Pede Passagem (1972), for Odeon. I could not check the reason why this album was not a commercial success by its release time, Elza Pede Passagem is very representative and one of the best albums recorded by Elza Soares in the 70’s, being also considered a classic samba-soul record. A big orchestra having the legendary Dom Salvador in charge of arrangements in all tracks accompanies Elza. Personnel is not listed. I’m also making available a video with Elza Soares performing Rio, Carnaval dos Carnavais in a Brazilian movie from the same year. Tracks include:

01 – Cheguendengo (Antônio Carlos Marques / Jocafi / Renato Luis Lobo)
02 – Saltei de Banda (Zé Rodrix / Luis Carlos Sá)
03 – Maria Vai Com as Outras (Toquinho / Vinicius de Moraes)
04 – Samba da Pá (João Só)
05 – Abc da Vida (Luis Reis / Haroldo Barbosa)
06 – Barão Beleza (Tuzé de Abreu)
07 – Rio Carnaval dos Carnavais (Padeirinho / Nilton Russo / Moacir)
08 – O Gato (Gonzaguinha)
09 – Pulo Pulo (Jorge Ben “Jorge Benjor”)
10 – Amor Perfeito (Billy Blanco)
11 – Mais do Que Eu (João Nogueira)

Este disco pode ser buscado no Um que Tenha. Lá ele está incluído no volume 8 da caixa Negra. Na Rádio Forma & Elenco, o disco só com as músicas originais pode ser buscado.
